  1. A spiky worm with legs like noodles. A giant predator that looks like a cross between a walrus and a housefly. Many animals that evolved during the Cambrian period, 541 million to 485 million years ago, seem bizarre compared with modern life-forms. Even paleontologists sometimes wonder: Why do Cambrian creatures look so strange? Animals from this ancient time are certainly distinctive. One of the better-known is Hallucigenia, a worm named for its resemblance to the product of a fever dream. Fossils of the spine-covered creature were first discovered in the 1900s in the Burgess Shale, a famed fossil deposit in the Canadian Rockies. Scientists found Hallucigenia's body shape so confusing that it took years to confirm which end of it was the head. Another standout is Opabinia, a five-eyed Cambrian invertebrate with a claw dangling from the end of a long, flexible face-nozzle. A group of paleontologists burst out laughing when their colleague, Harry Whittington, first showed them his reconstruction of the fossil at a conference in the 1970s. Whittington took the reaction as "a tribute to the strangeness of this animal" when he recounted it later in his detailed study of Opabinia. He concluded that the animal probably used its awkward facial appendage to dig for food All of these odd-looking animals evolved at a special time in Earth's history, said Javier Ortega-Hernández, an invertebrate paleontologist and assistant professor of organismic and evolutionary biology at Harvard University. For billions of years before the Cambrian period, simple underwater microorganisms were the only living things on Earth. By the beginning of the Cambrian, tiny animals had appeared to eat these microbes. But they stayed on the flat surface of the seafloor, unable to move above or below it. Then, 541 million years ago, worm-like animals developed the first simple muscles. "That is what really changed the whole game," Ortega-Hernández told Live Science. The power to move helped the worms burrow down into the seafloor, bringing oxygen with them. "And all of a sudden, bam," Ortega-Hernández said. "We have these marine sediments which are just teeming with activity and life." Moving above and below the seafloor's surface opened up new opportunities for animals to make a living. The early Cambrian period brought a rapid expansion of new life-forms as animals adapted to new habitats, food sources, predators and prey. This time — often referred to as the Cambrian explosion — gave rise to many lineages of animals that are still with us, including some of the first mollusks and arthropods. "Many of these arthropods had almost teeth-like structures in the legs that they used for chewing [on] each other, and that started to become a real issue" for their victims, said Ortega-Hernández. In response, animals such as Wiwaxia evolved defensive armor, like spines and plates. Over millennia, this adaptive arms race only intensified. Animals became increasingly diverse, complex and extraordinarily weird-looking as they battled each other to survive. Many Cambrian animals became extinct during the transition to the next geological period, the Ordovician. But some Cambrian curiosities are still with us today. Animals such as sponges, jellyfish and anemones look relatively similar to their Cambrian ancestors. And in 2014, Ortega-Hernández co-authored a study in the journal Nature(opens in new tab) providing evidence that Hallucigenia are related to modern-day velvet worms. In some ways, finding Cambrian creatures weird is just a reflection of our contemporary bias, said Ortega-Hernández. The older an organism is, he explained, the more changes life on Earth has had to adapt to since the organism appeared. That means that the species we see today are naturally very different from those that lived 500 million years ago. In other words, Hallucigenia and Opabinia would probably think you look ridiculous, too. link: https://www.livescience.com/65006-why-cambrian-creatures-look-weird.html
  2. Launched in 2020 as Mazda's first 100% electric model, the MX-30 adopts a new variant, this time plug-in hybrid thanks to a rotary engine serving as an energy generator. In 2020, Mazda launched its very first 100% electric model, the MX-30. Despite its original coupe SUV look and refined interior presentation, the model did not meet with the expected success (5,726 units sold in Europe between January and November 2022). In question, technical choices which offer it a meager range, with only 200 km of electric autonomy on paper thanks to a 35.5 kWh battery. To respond to this major criticism and offer more versatility to customers who have already fallen for its look, the Mazda MX-30 is adorned with a new plug-in hybrid version. Called the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, it stands out from the others with its astonishing architecture, using a technology well known at Mazda: the rotary engine. Invented by the German Felix Wankel, the rotary piston engine was inaugurated at Mazda by the Cosmo Sport 110S in 1967. After more than 2 million rotary engines produced in 45 years, this engine had disappeared at the same time as the RX coupé -8, ten years ago. This returns in the form of a thermal generator to accompany the electric motorization of the MX-30. 85 km of electric range supplemented by a 50-litre petrol tank link: https://www.auto-moto.com/nouveautes/mazda-mx-30-e-skyactiv-r-ev-version-hybride-rechargeable-corriger-gros-defaut-395705.html#item=1
  3. TEL AVIV: Tens of thousands of people protested in central Tel Aviv Saturday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's new hard-right government, which critics say threatens Israeli democracy. Israeli media reported 80,000 people joined the rally, citing police sources. Police gave no official estimate after reporting 20,000 protesters earlier in the evening. The demonstration is the biggest since Netanyahu's new government took power in late December in Israel, a country of just over nine million. "The situation is worrying and scary," said 22-year-old protester Aya Tal, who works in the high-tech industry. "They want to take away our rights... We must unite." Other rallies were held in Jerusalem, outside the prime minister's and the president's residences, and in the northern city of Haifa, local media reported. Already Israel's longest-serving premier, Netanyahu returned to power at the head of a coalition with extreme-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties, some of whose officials now head key ministries. Protesters called for Netanyahu, who is fighting corruption charges in court, to resign. "Bibi (Netanyahu) doesn´t want a democracy, we don't need fascists in the Knesset," read one sign at the Tel Aviv protest, referring to the Israeli parliament. 'Save democracy' The crowd filled the streets surrounding Tel Aviv's Habima Square and chanted "democracy, democracy", according to an AFP correspondent. Opposition parties had called on Israelis to join the demonstration — organised by an anti-corruption group — to "save democracy" and in protest at a planned judicial overhaul. Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced on January 4 a controversial plan to hand more powers to lawmakers in appointing judges and overriding Supreme Court decisions. In Israel, which does not have a constitution, the Supreme Court currently has the authority to repeal laws it considers discriminatory. Former Supreme Court judge Ayala Procaccia told the crowd the Israeli public "will not accept... the destruction of the basic values of our system." "We are at a fateful moment for the future of Israel," she said. The new government has also announced intentions to pursue a policy of settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank and carry out social reforms that have worried many. The rally included messages against the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. link: https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1030904-israelis-rally-against-netanyahu-government-of-shame
  4. This classic bistro offers a masterclass in French cooking – and that’s a totally unbiased opinion Jay Rayner Jay Rayner Sun 15 Jan 2023 06.00 GMT 508 Bouchon Racine, 66 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6BP (020 7253 3368). Starters £8.50-£16.50, mains £17.50-£48, desserts £6.50-£9, wines from £25.50 There are film critics who, presented with a Martin Scorsese movie, can be guaranteed to rave. There are theatre critics who will be bucket-full of puppyish love when writing about any musical by Stephen Sondheim. This is the restaurant review equivalent. The only argument for me not reviewing the newly opened Bouchon Racine is that I am a huge, dribbling admirer of all the people involved and all the food they serve. In other words, because I was stone cold certain in advance that the restaurant would be very good indeed and because I was proved absolutely right, I shouldn’t say so as I have already shown myself to be compromised, courtesy of my deep experience and overwhelming, impeccable good taste. Yeah, right. So here it is: Bouchon Racine is everything. It is the joyful rebirth of chef Henry Harris’s restaurant Racine, a once greatly adored bistro on London’s Brompton Road, which opened in 2002. Harris, who was part of Simon Hopkinson’s first brigade at Bibendum, wanted, after a less happy journey around kitchens in thrall to fashion, to open a restaurant serving the kind of classic French dishes he loved. He wanted to do indecently good things with butter and cream and the inner bits of the animal from which too many people recoil. His menu there was an unashamed celebration of the bourgeois, marinated in the very best of Bordeaux, fair doused in Armagnac. Racine, which means root, was meant to be a neighbourhood restaurant, but by 2015 there was not much of a neighbourhood left. Too many people had treated property less as a home than an investment. Harris moved on. He brought a little of his Francophile magic to a bunch of pubs and, along the way, for the sake of full disclosure, cooked the last supper for the end of my book of that name, in a room above one of them. We ate very well that night. Now he has teamed up with Dave Strauss, another industry veteran, with a gift for service and a beard that Zeus himself must envy. I have many reasons to adore Strauss, beyond the fact that he makes good service look effortless. He was general manager of the hilarious Beast in 2014 when I wrote an excoriating review. I argued that the steaks were so expensive, “they should lead the damn animal into the restaurant and install it under the table so it can pleasure me while I eat.” Strauss responded on Twitter: “Fellating cows already en route to restaurant.” He ran Goodman and Zelman Meats before a stint in the West Country with the chef Mitch Tonks. Together, Harris and Strauss have now taken over the Three Compasses opposite London’s Farringdon station. Downstairs is the pub where they sell pints of Moretti. Upstairs is the dining room, with its glass-ceilinged conservatory area at the front. It used to be a Thai place. The red carpet has been replaced by dark varnished floorboards. The walls are the deepest shade of Jersey cream, and the menu is a scribbled blackboard of true loveliness, which changes depending on what’s available. Start with oysters from Carlingford or silken slices of nutty jambon noir de Bigorre from the Hautes-Pyrénées, with fat the colour of antique crockery. Drape that across chunks of baguette smeared with the best funky salted butter. Hold a bit of the bread back to swish through the hot brown butter with salty-sour capers bathing two lobes of calves’ brains, impeccably cooked so that the outside is crisp and the inside pearly white. Too rich for your blood? Too cerebral? Have the chicken liver pâté, coarse cut and earthy and reminiscent of the Jewish way with chopped livers. Or have dense, tensed pieces of herring with potato salad dressed with slivers of carrot and ribbons of acidulated onion and the best peppery olive oil. Swoon a little. Take a sip of your well-priced Côtes du Rhône. Centre yourself for what is to come. link: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/jan/15/bouchon-racine-london-i-am-a-huge-dribbling-admirer-restaurant-review
  5. SALINAS, UNITED STATES: The latest in a damaging succession of storm systems blew into California on Saturday, bringing heavy flooding to already waterlogged regions and threatening snowfalls of up to six feet (two meters) in areas. The latest system was expected to bring "heavy lower-elevation rain, significant mountain snow, and strong winds," with "another surge of Pacific moisture" expected Monday, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. It predicted "disastrous flooding" across the lower Salinas River valley, an important agricultural region south of San Francisco Bay. An AFP journalist saw the Salinas River overtopping its banks in many spots, at times covering farm fields for hundreds of yards, even as the rain continued under leaden skies. In Spreckels, a community a few hundred yards from the river, most residents had opted not to evacuate despite warnings from authorities. "It looks like we might have missed kind of the worst of it," said Robert Zagajeski, out walking his dog under a light rain. A few miles away, 30-year-old farm worker Erick Diaz watched the flooded fields from his home near the river. Despite evacuation orders, he too had remained. "I have nowhere to go and for the moment everything is fine," he said. Governor Gavin Newsom, however, warned Californians that they were not in the clear yet: "We're not done," he said Saturday after visiting residents impacted by the storms. Urging residents to remain vigilant, he said Californians should continue to exercise "common sense over the course of the next 24 to 48 hours." Nearly 26 million Californians remained under a flood watch Saturday evening, according to the NWS, with tens of thousands ordered to evacuate. The storms of recent weeks were originally welcomed — coming after years of drought — but by now have brought "disastrous" flooding, officials say. Around 2330 GMT, there were approximately 20,000 homes without power, according to poweroutage.us. At least 19 people are known to have died from storm-related causes. "This place was hit hard by the drought over the past years," 58-year-old farmworker Manuel Paris told AFP near Salinas. "We're not used to this much rain anymore." The NWS said an additional two to three inches of rain (5.0 to 7.5 centimeters) could cause new flooding and mudslides, with parts of the Sierra Nevada seeing three to six feet of snow, and heavy winds buffeting central and coastal California at up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour. Dangerous travel The most populous US state has been pummeled by near-record downpours over three weeks — an average of nine inches of rain has fallen — with the Salinas Valley among the hardest hit. On Friday, forecasters warned that the Monterey Peninsula could be cut off and the whole city of Salinas — home to 160,000 people — could be hit by flooding. But on Saturday, an AFP journalist said the city itself had so far been largely spared. Between storms, workers have rushed to clear some of the mess, shoveling mud from roads even in the heart of Los Angeles and using heavy machinery to remove fallen trees or clear rockslides. An AFP journalist saw tractors in fields near Salinas fighting to pump floodwaters back into the river. Newly falling rain was not helping the effort. And forecasters say the unsettled weather in the US West — associated with what is called an atmospheric river pattern — is not done. Over the mountains, heavy snow was making travel dangerous or impossible on a three-day holiday weekend honoring civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. link: https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1030879-new-storms-hitting-california-as-it-faces-already-disastrous-floods
