  3. 2021 has been a great year for smartphones, all things considered. We put out a list in the middle of this year recapping some of the best launches we've had in India, and now it's time for the final update as we close yet another year of stellar phone launches. Most of the phones in the previous list have remained, with the exception of some such as the Vivo X60 Pro, which has traded places with the Vivo X70 Pro+. We have some new additions such as the Realme GT and of course, the iPhone 13 series. The Google Pixel 6 series probably would have made this list too, had Google launched it in India. How we picked the best phones of 2021 In the previous list, one of the criteria for a smartphone to qualify as one of the best of the year was that it had to have earned an overall rating of at least ‘8' in its review. However, we're tweaking that qualifier a bit for this list, which helps us narrow it down to only the best of the best. We've sorted all the phones that have earned an overall score of ‘9' for this final list, and then only picked the ones that we felt deserved a spot based on their sub-scores in different criteria. We also considered any unique features and performance advantages each smartphone offers compared to its peers in the same segment. Lastly, these models are the ones that we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. With that out of the way, let's meet the chosen ones. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini The Apple iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini aren't huge updates over their predecessors but we feel that Apple has made enough notable changes to keep things fresh and provide a better usage experience. Both new iPhones get some big improvements under the hood such as a faster SoC, sensor-shift stabilisation for the main camera, and larger batteries. They also get some of the same camera features as the iPhone 13 Pro models such as Cinematic Mode and Photographic Styles. All this adds up to a very good user experience, at the same starting prices as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The iPhone 13 mini has everything the iPhone 13 has, only with a smaller battery and display. However, that doesn't mean it's a weaker iPhone. In fact, the iPhone 13 mini delivers better battery life compared to the iPhone 12 mini, and as a compact flagship, is a much better deal than something like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/guide/best-phones-2021-2495738
  4. Introduction The Galaxy A34 is here and is doing its best to continue building on top of a successful value formula. The A34 is not unlike the A33 5G before it, but there are a few noteworthy differences. The A34 has grown noticeably. It now has a 6.6-inch diagonal, up from 6.4 inches in last year's model, and it's now got a larger and heavier body. This means the A34 is now bigger even than the current Galaxy A54. The display on the new A34 is not only bigger but is now also faster at a 120Hz refresh rate. It is also shorter and wider at a 19.5:9 aspect ratio with smaller bezels. Another notable change is the chipset. Instead of relying on an in-house Exynos chipset like last year, Samsung went for a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chip this time. That's one interesting development, given that the Galaxy A54 did get a new Samsung Exynos 1380 chip. Samsung Galaxy A34 specs at a glance: Body: 161.3x78.1x8.2mm, 199g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass 5), plastic frame, plastic back; IP67 dust/water resistant (up to 1m for 30 min). Display: 6.60" Super AMOLED, 120Hz, 1080x2340px resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 390ppi. Chipset: Mediatek MT6877V Dimensity 1080 (6 nm): Octa-core (2x2.6 GHz Cortex-A78 & 6x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55); Mali-G68 MC4. Memory: 128GB 6GB RAM, 128GB 8GB RAM, 256GB 8GB RAM; microSDXC (uses shared SIM slot). OS/Software: Android 13, One UI 5.1. Rear camera: Wide (main): 48 MP, f/1.8, 26mm, 1/2.0", 0.8µm, PDAF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 8 MP, f/2.2, 123-degree, 1/4.0", 1.12µm; Macro: 5 MP, f/2.4. Front camera: 13 MP, f/2.2, (wide), 1/3.1", 1.12µm. Video capture: Rear camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps, 720p@480fps; Front camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps. Battery: 5000mAh; 25W wired. Misc: Fingerprint reader (under display, optical); stereo speakers; Virtual proximity sensing. Aside from these changes, the Galaxy A54 makes sure to stick closely to an already-established formula without major deviations. Some important specs highlights still include an IP67 ingress protection rating and a stereo speaker setup. The Galaxy A54 also retains its large 5,000 mAh battery with 25W fast charging. Its camera looks mostly unchanged from last year, with a 48MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, a 5MP macro cam and a 13MP selfie. No depth sensor this time around, though. So, that's the Galaxy A34 in a nutshell. The question now is whether it is as good as its predecessor and good value in general. Join us on the following pages as we try to find that out. Unboxing The Galaxy A34 comes in a thin two-piece cardboard box like its predecessor. Samsung does not include a charger with the A34. That's not exactly a new development, but one that still deserves mention, especially in the midrange. You do still get a USB Type-C to Type-C cable in the box inside the thin paper compartment. The cable is compatible with Samsung's 25W fast charging, so that bit is covered. https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_a34-review-2554.php

  7. The boss of one of the UK's largest business groups has been fired over complaints about his behaviour at work. Tony Danker, who will leave the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) following an investigation over his conduct towards several employees, said he was "shocked" by the sacking. Three other CBI employees have also been suspended pending a probe into other allegations, the group said. It is also liaising with the police who are looking into the claims. Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Waight of the City of London Police said: "We approached the CBI following media reports and our investigations are at a very early stage. It would not be appropriate to comment any further at this time." Mr Danker stepped aside in March after the CBI hired law firm Fox Williams to investigate several complaints about him. These included a complaint from a female employee in January and complaints from other members of staff which surfaced in March. The 51-year-old, who was paid £376,000 by the CBI in 2021, has now been dismissed with immediate effect with no severance pay. He is being replaced by Rain Newton-Smith, the CBI's former chief economist. Mr Danker tweeted on Tuesday: "I recognise the intense publicity the CBI has suffered following the revelations of awful events that occurred before my time in office. I was appalled to learn about them for the first time last week. "I was nevertheless shocked to learn this morning that I had been dismissed from the CBI, instead of being invited to put my position forward as was originally confirmed. Many of the allegations against me have been distorted, but I recognise that I unintentionally made a number of colleagues feel uncomfortable and I am truly sorry about that. I want to wish my former CBI colleagues every success." The findings of the investigation into him for now remain unpublished. Business group postpones events after new claims Business group boss steps aside after misconduct claims Last week, the Guardian newspaper reported sexual misconduct claims against CBI employees, including an allegation of rape at a summer boat party in 2019. Many of the most serious allegations predate Mr Danker's time as director-general. Belfast-born Mr Danker took over as head of the CBI in November 2020. He had previously spent 10 years as a consultant with McKinsey, and worked as a special adviser to the Treasury under Gordon Brown's government. He has also been international director then chief strategy officer at Guardian News and Media. In its statement on Tuesday, the CBI said: "Tony Danker is dismissed with immediate effect following the independent investigation into specific complaints of workplace misconduct against him. "The board wishes to make clear he is not the subject of any of the more recent allegations in The Guardian but has determined that his own conduct fell short of that expected of the director-general." The scandals have left the CBI facing its biggest crisis since it was founded in 1965. Some company executives who are members of the group have described it as an existential crisis for an organisation that represents the interests of some 190,000 businesses across the UK. The lobby group has already postponed its public events and asked Fox Williams to conduct a separate investigation to the one into Mr Danker. 'Serious failings' A Downing Street spokesman said the government would keep its engagement with the CBI on hold while the group continued its investigation, adding: "We continue to expect any allegations to be taken seriously and for appropriate action to be taken in response." Labour's shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said Labour had also cut ties with the CBI for now, calling the allegations "incredibly concerning". In its statement, the lobby group said the allegations made in recent weeks had been "devastating" and that there had been "serious failings" in how it had handled sexual misconduct complaints. It said it would now begin a "root-and-branch review" of its culture and governance. This will look at issues such as how employees raise concerns and processes for escalating complaints. "It is already clear to all of us that there have been serious failings in how we have acted as an organisation. We must do better, and we must be better," it said. Mr Danker's replacement, Rain Newton-Smith, becomes the second woman to lead the group in its history. Ms Newton-Smith, who spent her early career as an economist at the Bank of England, left the CBI in March to join Barclays bank as managing director for strategy and policy, sustainability and ESG (environmental, social and governance). She is well known to CBI staff and members but will face a tough job in reassuring members that the lobby group can effectively represent their interests. Jürgen Maier, the former UK boss of engineering giant Siemens, said Mr Danker's sacking should be a "wake up moment" for all business leaders. Mr Maier, who served on the CBI's president's committee until 2019, told Radio 4's World at One programme: "For any leader this is a wake up moment to make sure that we do root and branch reviews of our organisation and make sure that we've got the cultures in place that don't allow these sorts of behaviours to happen." Last week the boss of brewing company Adnams said his firm had considered leaving the CBI following the scandals. On Tuesday, chief executive Andy Wood said a decision would not be made until the full investigation was complete, but added he was encouraged by the action taken. "The allegations were very serious and there's clearly no room for that type of behaviour in any workplace," he told the BBC. "So it was right that we reviewed [our membership], but it's also right we give the organisation a chance to put its house back in order." The CBI lobbies politicians on firms' behalf to make policies that benefit UK businesses. It also hosts regular networking events for business leaders, with the UK chancellor typically giving the keynote speech at its annual dinner. According its most recently published accounts, £22m of its £25m income in 2021 came from membership fees. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-65238672
  8. Scientists have spent five years classifying the size, mass and po[CENSORED]tion of all living organisms, and at the end they made a surprising discovery — that the tiniest and largest living entities on Earth dominate by sheer mass. To tackle this gargantuan task, the team, led by biologists from Rutgers University in New Jersey, and the University of British Columbia, divided life into 36 categories across terrestrial, marine and subterranean environments. Within each group, they identified the biggest, smallest and most common body size. Then, combining that information with pre-existing data on each group's biomass, they estimated how much of the Earth's biomass each category comprised. Forest plants had the highest biomass and amphibians had the lowest, according to their findings, which were published on March 29 in the journal PLOS One(opens in new tab). Study co-author Malin Pinsky(opens in new tab), an associate professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers University, told Live Science that this sort of survey is "the first time this has ever been done." Related: How big can animals get? In the 1960s(opens in new tab), aquatic ecologists found total biomass concentration remained constant across wildly different scales, indicating that size was evenly distributed among various species. Pinsky said his team had expected to find "roughly the same amount of life at every body size" as previous studies also predicted. Instead, the results revealed that nature favors size at its extremes. "The world we see often seems like it's full of lots of small insects and butterflies," Pinksky said. "And yet, what we've discovered is actually those are sort of intermediate body sizes that aren't necessarily all that common." Rather, marine and soil bacteria, which are considered small, have more biomass than intermediately sized insects. The investigation also yielded that this pattern held across different types of species, and was even more evident in terrestrial creatures than marine dwellers. As for humans, Homo sapiens' size may be large relative to that of another species, but human biomass can't compete with other biological groups. Setting this survey apart from other similar projects is its incorporation of groups like undersea microbes and producers like kelp and sea grasses, which previous studies excluded, though they account for nearly half of ocean biomass. Among the 36 categories, which included lifeforms such as reptiles and mollusks, the most massive po[CENSORED]tions belonged to plants and bacteria. Of these, the smallest were microscopic bacteria while the largest included vast underground networks of fungi and tree roots. These groups collectively dwarf the biomass of animals such as humans, livestock and wild terrestrial animals. And while humans are relatively large and fit into the bigger end of the size spectrum, our biomass can't compete with that of soil and marine protists that are invisible to the eye. "Besides whales, there are no other organisms bigger than corals and mangroves," lead author Eden Tekwa(opens in new tab), a quantitative ecologist who began the research as a postdoctoral fellow at Rutgers, finished it at the University of British Columbia, and currently studies biodiversity as a research associate at McGill University in Canada, told Live Science. The study not only reveals how Earth's biomass is currently distributed , but also what the future may look like. Tekwa said the team quantified the amount of carbon in each group, and found smaller life forms generally have shorter lifespans, so their carbon is released into the atmosphere at a faster clip, potentially contributing to climate change. "It also gives us a way to understand how the biosphere changes within environments," Tekwa said. Fish are decreasing in size because of fishing and the warming climate. Studying how organism size trends with a changing environment offers insight on what kind of food sources will be available in the future. "Body size is one of the most basic characteristics of life on Earth," Pinsky said. "Understanding how life is distributed across different body sizes is fundamental to understanding life on Earth." https://www.livescience.com/the-smallest-and-largest-creatures-make-up-most-of-earths-biomass-surprising-study-finds
  9. Five people have received life-saving transplants from organs of a British-Israeli woman killed in a suspected Palestinian gun attack on Friday. The surgeries were carried out at two hospitals in Israel shortly before the funeral of Lucy Dee, 45, who died from her injuries on Monday. Two of her daughters were also killed in the attack as the family were driving in the occupied West Bank. The family moved to Israel from the UK nine years ago. Israel's National Transplant Center said a 51-year-old woman received Lucy Dee's heart; a 58-year-old woman one of her lungs; a 25-year-old man her liver; and a 58-year-old man and a 39-year-old man her kidneys. Her corneas have been preserved for future use. Lucy's husband, Rabbi Leo Dee, told the Times of Israel that the family made the decision to donate her organs because "everything... that is lifesaving should be given". Thousands of mourners attended Lucy Dee's funeral in the West Bank Jewish settlement of Kfar Etzion, where two days earlier her two daughters - Rina, 15, and Maia, 20 - were buried in similar emotionally charged scenes. Government ministers attended both funerals. On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to "get all the evil terrorists who killed our citizens and they will be held accountable with no exception". Lucy, Rina and Maia were shot at as they were driving in the Jordan Valley on their way to a family holiday. Their vehicle crashed and the gunmen went up to the car and opened fire on the women at close range, Israeli media quoted investigators as saying. Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported that 22 bullet casings were found, apparently from a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a hunt for the perpetrators following the attack, which came at a time of spiralling tensions between Israel and the Palestinians. On Monday, a 15-year-old Palestinian boy, Mohammad Balhan, was shot dead by Israeli troops in Aqabat Jabr refugee camp near Jericho in the West Bank, Palestinian officials said. The Israeli military said its forces were carrying out an operation to arrest militants in the camp at the time, and that they had returned fire after being shot at and attacked with explosives. Since the start of this year, more than 90 Palestinians - militants and civilians - have been killed by Israeli forces. Eighteen Israelis, a Ukrainian and an Italian - all civilians, except for an Israeli paramilitary police officer - have been also killed in attacks by (or suspected to have been carried out by) Palestinians and, in one case, an Israeli Arab. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-65234553
  10. Leaked filings made with the Chinese government have revealed the design of the new MG Cyberster, long before the electric sports car was due to be unveiled. Appearing in a set of images revealing its front and rear, the Cyberster is a sleek soft-top with two seats. The filings suggest it will measure 4535mm long, 1913mm wide and 1329mm high - slightly larger than the Porsche 718 Boxster and significantly bigger than the Mazda MX-5. Details of the Cyberster’s powertrain line-up were also detailed, revealing the Cyberster would be offered in both single- and dual-motor specifications. Entry-level, single-motor models offer 309bhp, while dual-motor models offer up to 536bhp. Weight varies depending on the specification, with single-motor variants tipping the scales at 1850kg. In its heaviest form, the Cyberster weighs 1985kg. Several wheel designs and badge styles were also revealed. Inside, meanwhile, the Cyberster makes use of a Tesla-style yoke steering wheel and several digital screens for infotainment and driving data. The Cyberster will be launched in 2024 with the aim of attracting new buyers in new segments. Autocar understands it won't be officially revealed at this month’s Shanghai motor show. Set to help MG continue its steep growth trajectory, the Cyberster will also significantly expand the brand's product portfolio as it approaches its centenary in 2024. In the 16 years since being acquired by the Chinese state-owned SAIC, MG has established itself as a leading maker of value-oriented yet well-equipped and safe family cars, selling more than 100,000 across Europe last year. Crucial to this goal will be the introduction of new cars. The MG 5 SW EV estate and ZS EV crossover are already among the most po[CENSORED]r EVs in Europe, and MG will look to build on this success by appealing to younger drivers and enthusiasts with an all-new product line, designated Cyber in reference to its five primary priorities: co-creating, young, beyond, evolution and recreation. The initiative was first outlined last year with the unveiling of the Cyberster concept – an electric roadster that at once nodded to MG’s heritage as a British sports car manufacturer and previewed the technical capabilities and functionality of its future cars. Cyberster production was approved after the Shanghai motor show as a result of a successful crowdfunding campaign in which more than 5000 prospective buyers signed up to MG’s interactive Cybercube platform, allowing them to inform development of the production car. It’s now set to be launched as part of MG’s centenary celebrations. A brand spokesman said: “We are working on a surprise for you guys. Of course we know we were the affordable sports car brand in the past, and now we are the new electric vehicle brand, and we will surprise you. We will be in markets that nobody has been in before.” Indeed, no mainstream brand has yet launched an affordable, convertible electric sports car. While some of the concept’s more outlandish features will be lost, MG’s UK design boss, Carl Gotham, hinted that a toned-down version will make it to dealerships, calling it “a bold statement that looks strongly into MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting-edge technology and advanced design”. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/official-mg-cyberster-design-revealed-chinese-government-filings

  14. When it comes to entry-level smartphones, the main focus has always remained similar over the years. These smartphones have always been about big displays and battery life but not much else. But with better hardware, this focus has deviated a bit over time. Apart from delivering the basics, bigger displays and batteries also mean that the focus is now on entertainment. A quality speaker or stereo speakers are a welcomed addition at this price. HD displays are common, but full-HD displays are still rare. Basic gaming is also possible in this segment and surprisingly, you can find high refresh rate displays as well. Our newest addition to the sub-Rs. 10,000 smartphone guide is the Infinix Hot 11S. Launched at Rs. 10,999, it recently received a price cut and is now available online at around Rs. 9,499. Here are the best smartphones in India under Rs. 10,000, in no particular order. Phones under Rs. 10,000Gadgets 360 rating (out of 10)Price in India (as recommended) Realme C317Rs. 9,999 Moto E407Rs. 9,999 Infinix Hot 11S8Rs. 9,499 Micromax In 2b8Rs. 8,999 Realme Narzo 30A8Rs. 8,999 Realme C31 The Realme C31 performs well as a daily driver for casual use. The phone looks modern and stylish and at first glance, it's tough to tell that it's actually a budget device. The 5,000mAh battery is also sufficient to deliver good battery life. While the SoC can handle basic multitasking and social apps, gaming isn't exactly its forte, which means you'll need to stick to casual games at best on this one. The cameras on the C31 could've been better and we didn't like the fact that Portrait mode only works with human subjects. We think it's best if you get the higher RAM and storage variant of the Realme C31, instead of the base model, since that price difference is not much and it should offer better performance in the long run. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/guide/best-phone-under-10000-in-2022-india-3507441
  15. Introduction The Nothing Phone (1) was definitely one of last year's hype beasts, but was that hype warranted, or is it, in the end, just a Nothingburger? Is there something to it, or is it simply Nothing to write home about? We'll stop now, but these puns really do write themselves. And that might be part of the reason why Nothing chose to call itself that. It makes no sense, everyone cries. And yet, it's instantly memorable, and if you're a startup, you definitely want to go for memorable over "that makes perfect sense" any day of the week. So that's how we ended up with a company that's definitely making something(s), despite calling itself Nothing. Its first smartphone was always inevitable, and it's also intriguing in its own right. It's a mid-ranger like many others, but it's also a mid-ranger unlike any other on the market still, with its huge focus on design - be that in the iPhone inspiration to it, or the unique rear look it brings to the table, along with the associated Glyph LEDs. It's not just the back, though - it's the only Android mid-ranger with truly symmetrical screen bezels still. What we have here, then, is a device hyped to the moon and back, with specs that are Nothing out of the ordinary (sorry, couldn't help it), and with a design that's at the same time heavily inspired by something and unique, which seems like the grandest possible contradiction, and yet it's not. It's been a long time since we went into a long-term review being this curious about the cliche-sounding 'what it's actually like to live with', considering all these factors. If you're also curious to find out how much of the hype is fluff-based, and how much is actually based on real qualities that this phone possesses; if you want to learn all about what it's like to use in early 2023, we have a few upcoming pages for you to consider. Without spoiling anything, we'll say one thing: this was definitely not a boring experience, as the Nothing Phone (1) is not a device to just slide into the background and sit there unnoticed, unremarkable. https://www.gsmarena.com/nothing_phone_1_long_term-review-2553.php
  16. NVIDIA DLSS 2 has outclassed AMD FSR 2 across 26 games which shows the green team's superior upscaling implementation. It's a head-to-head fight between AMD FSR 2 & NVIDIA DLSS 2 to see which upscaler is the best for gamers In today's PC games, gamers can utilize AMD FSR 2 and NVIDIA DLSS 2 upscaling technologies for faster performance with minimal image quality sacrifice. These upscaling technologies come in a range of modes, allowing users to set what's best suited for them and the hardware they are using. Early Intel 14th Gen Meteor Lake-M Laptop CPU With 4+8 Core Configuration Spotted As of right now, there are 260 games/apps that support NVIDIA's DLSS 2 and 110 games/apps that support FSR 2. That is definitely a really huge list of games and applications to compare the 2 said technologies however, HardwareUnboxed did a test between 26 modern AAA titles to see which is the upscaler that stands out in terms of performance and quality. It should be noted that the staff at Wccftech did not tabulate these performance metrics and are connected to HardwareUnboxed. Any bias to any company by HardwareUnboxed in the following video does not reflect Wccftech. In the video, HardwareUnboxed compares the performance and Quality modes of both AMD FSR 2 & NVIDIA DLSS 2 in two resolutions — 1440p and 4K. Early in the video, it is stated that combining results for all settings and resolutions add to 104 individual results. Also, Hardware Unboxed looks at image quality will be above frame rates in the results as both upscaling technologies provide almost negligible performance. Another fact stated in the above video is how both companies' upscalers replace DLL libraries with their proprietary files. This grants each company an unfair advantage over the other, so Hardware Unboxed assured that no DLL modifications were made in the testing to offer a more accurate result from both AMD and NVIDIA. https://wccftech.com/nvidia-dlss-2-outshines-amd-fsr-2-across-26-game-test-by-hardwareunboxed/

  18. Nicola Sturgeon has said she wants to get on with her life and her job after a week that saw her husband arrested and her home searched by police. Scotland's former first minister was speaking for the first time since Peter Murrell was questioned over the SNP party's finances. The former SNP chief executive was arrested and released without charge pending further investigation. Ms Sturgeon told reporters recent days had been "obviously difficult". SNP facing 'biggest crisis in 50 years' - Mike Russell SNP auditors quit amid Peter Murrell police investigation Peter Murrell released without charge after arrest Outside her Glasgow home, which was the subject of a two-day search by Police Scotland, the former party leader said: "Well first off, there is obviously nothing I can say about the ongoing investigation. "As much as there are things I may want to say, I'm not able to do so, other than to say that, as has been the case, there will continue to be full co-operation. "The last few days have been obviously difficult, quite traumatic at times, but I understand that is part of a process." Asked if she had been questioned by officers, Ms Sturgeon replied: "I haven't, but I will fully co-operate with the police as and when they request that, if indeed they do." She declined to say whether detectives have indicated that they wish to speak to her. Police searched their home in Glasgow, with uniformed officers also searching the SNP's headquarters in Edinburgh. She asked for a "little bit of privacy in my own home" following the week's events. She added: "My neighbours, I think, are also entitled to a wee bit of privacy as well. "Over the years, as a result of living next door to me, they've been subjected to more than their fair share of disruption and inconvenience. "And that has obviously been particularly the case over the last couple of days." Read the latest headlines from Scotland Mr Murrell, who has been married to Ms Sturgeon since 2010, resigned as chief executive of the SNP after taking responsibility for misleading statements about a fall in party membership. Last year it emerged that he gave a loan of more than £100,000 to the SNP to help it out with a "cash flow" issue after the last election. The party had repaid about half of the money by October of that year. At the time an SNP spokesman said the loan was a "personal contribution made by the chief executive to assist with cash flow after the Holyrood election". He said it had been reported in the party's 2021 accounts. Ms Sturgeon told assembled media: "Peter's at home as you would expect it to be. Peter's not able to say anything. "Again, that's not necessarily a matter of choice. That's just the nature of this." Ms Sturgeon's comments follow a tumultuous week for the SNP. It emerged on Friday that the firm that audits the SNP's finances had resigned. Accountants Johnston Carmichael had worked with the party for more than a decade but said the decision was taken after a review of its clients. The BBC understands Johnston Carmichael resigned before Mr Murrell's arrest. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-65221865
  19. A ghostly white snailfish has unknowingly smashed the record for the deepest fish ever seen after it was filmed at more than 27,000 feet beneath the ocean surface. Scientists on board the research vessel DSSV Pressure Drop stumbled across the snailfish, which is likely a juvenile, in September 2022 while using a remotely operated submersible attached with a baited camera in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench in the western Pacific, near Japan. The snailfish species is unknown, but scientists believe it belongs to the genus Pseudoliparis. It was spotted at a record-breaking depth of 27,349 feet (8,336 meters). The previous record holder for the deepest fish ever filmed was a Mariana snailfish (Pseudoliparis swirei), which was seen lurking at a depth of 26,831 feet (8,178 m) in the Mariana Trench — the deepest known ocean trench on Earth, which is located to the south of the Izu-Ogasawara Trench. During the recent expedition near Japan, researchers also caught two snailfish from the species Pseudoliparis belyaevi in the Japan Trench, located to the north of the Izu-Ogasawara Trench, in baited traps set at a depth of 26,319 feet (8,022 m). This makes them the deepest fish ever caught by humans. There are more than 400 known species of snailfish, which all belong to the family Liparidae. They are found in shallow coastal waters all the way down to some of the deepest spots in Earth's oceans. Deep-dwelling snailfish, like the various record-breakers in the genus Pseudoliparis, can withstand pressure equivalent to more than 800 atmospheres, which is enough force to crush most living organisms. To do this, snailfish have evolved without swim bladders, which are air-filled sacs that provide buoyancy to most fish species. They have also replaced their scales with a gelatinous layer that protects them from the crushing depths, expedition lead scientist Alan Jamieson(opens in new tab), a marine biologist at the University of Western Australia, told The Guardian(opens in new tab). The snailfish also contain a fluid called osmolyte, which helps protect them on a cellular level, he said. It is not surprising that the record-breaking snailfish was a juvenile. Among most snailfish species, the young are specially adapted to live in deeper waters than adults. This protects the vulnerable youngsters from potential predators that can't venture deep enough to catch them, researchers wrote in a statement(opens in new tab). The new footage suggests that snailfish in the Japanese trenches may be much more abundant than similar species in other ocean trenches, such as the Mariana Trench. But it is unclear why this is the case, researchers wrote in the statement. The researchers hope to return to the two trenches near Japan — and the nearby Ryukyu Trench — to continue their research into the record-breaking snailfish and look for other bizarre deep sea creatures. "The Japanese trenches were incredible places to explore," Jamieson said in the statement. "They are so rich in life, even all the way at the bottom." Until now, nobody had ever seen or caught a fish in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench, so there is plenty more to find, he added. https://www.livescience.com/deepest-dwelling-fish-ever-seen-is-a-ghostly-snailfish-spotted-more-than-27000-feet-beneath-the-ocean-surface
  20. Nobody could dispute that BMW has got the bit firmly between its teeth concerning the business of brash, fast SUVs. How firmly is something that becomes apparent when you consider that the 523bhp, £109,000 BMW X7 M60i tested here isn’t even the fastest, brashest BMW SUV you can buy, or even the second-most – step forward the new M-bespoke 653bhp BMW XM and the recently upgraded 628bhp X5 M. But, of course, the X7 M60i’s remit is not simply to be as fleet-footed and dynamically able as it’s possible for BMW to achieve. It must also be endlessly practical and lavishly comfortable. There is an overlap with the BMW 7 Series limousine here, which is an element neither of the hottest X7’s uber-powerful stablemates need worry about. They need only be fast and brash. So who are the chief rivals of this wide-ranging SUV? Given this is such an expensive and niche recipe, there are a surprising number. Most notable is the latest Range Rover, the current class benchmark for both off-road marauding and rolling refinement back on terra firma. However, as a BMW and an M-lite one at that, the seven-seat X7 M60i needs to fight convincingly well on broader fronts. In dynamic terms, owners will expect it to be an alternative to the Porsche Cayenne, only with the all-round usability of Audi’s Q7 and the everyday opulence of the Mercedes GLS. In fact, there’s an argument to be made that, in V8-engined flagship M60i guise, the X7 has the toughest job in the segment. So can it rise to the occasion, or will it prove as divisive to drive as to look upon? Range at a glance A bespoke M derivative of the X7 is something BMW has never offered, meaning the V8-powered M60i that replaces the pre-facelift M50i is the flagship, above two straight-six options starting at around £85,000. Interestingly, BMW has dropped the 395bhp M50d, a quad-turbo version of the straight-six turbo diesel. All models use the same eight-speed torque-converter automatic, which is an enhanced version of the existing Steptronic gearbox. Most buyers will opt for one of the six-cylinder versions, and they will have a choice of entry-level Excellence trim or the po[CENSORED]r M Sport trim, which adds various dark and sporty design touches, an M Aerodynamics package and 21in M alloy wheels. The equipment seen on the M60i builds on this considerably. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/bmw/x7
