  3. A Mexica legend talks about how the god Xólotl gave rise to the axolotl, one of the most representative animals of Mexican culture Mexican biodiversity has many faces, but few as iconic as that of the axolotl. This amphibian, endemic to the Valley of Mexico, has become a national symbol. Its representation is that of regeneration and survival in a habitat that has suffered from inclement weather for centuries. The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanu), which is also known as the "water monster", is an amphibian belonging to the salamander species. It is distinguished by conserving its larval features during its adult life, a condition called neoteny. In other words, this little animal keeps its tadpole-like dorsal fin throughout its life. It may interest you: They find a strange reptile swimming in the piers of Xochimilco This endemic amphibian also has a unique regeneration system. It has been seen that, beyond reconstructing parts of its body, the axolotl can heal wounds in its heart without leaving scars, thus achieving a completely healthy organ. The legend of Xolotl Legend has it that Xolotl, brother of Quetzalcoatl, wanted to avoid being sacrificed at any price. For this reason, this god, of fire and lightning, was transformed into corn and then into maguey to avoid being discovered. Despite this, these attempts were not enough to go unnoticed, so he decided to take refuge in the water and that's when he took the form of the axolotl. “WHEN QUETZALCÓATL FOUND XÓLOTL, HE RECALLED AND SAID TO HIM: SINCE YOU REFUSED TO DIE SACRIFICED TO GIVE LIFE TO ANOTHER ELEMENT, YOU WILL REMAIN HERE ALL YOUR LIFE, BUT THE DAY THAT YOUR ELEMENT, WATER, IS NO LONGER GOOD, YOU WILL DISAPPEAR FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH TOGETHER WITH THE HUMAN RACE,” DIONISIO ESLAVA SANDOVAL, PRESIDENT OF THE UMBRAL AXOCHIATL ORGANIZATION, TELLS MONGABAY LATAM a threatened habitat Axolotls once po[CENSORED]ted most of the lacustrine area of the Valley of Mexico. Today things are very different; their habitat is limited exclusively to the channels of Xochimilco, where, in addition, they only inhabit a space of 10 square kilometers. This notable reduction of its place is the product of multiple alterations to its ecosystem. “IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO KNOW THE EXACT NUMBER OF WHICH REMAIN BECAUSE IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO COUNT, ALTHOUGH THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT THEIR PO[CENSORED]TION DECREASES EVERY YEAR. AT THIS TIME THE SPECIES DOES NOT HAVE THE VITALITY OR THE NUMBER TO CONSIDER IT OUT OF DANGER,” QUINTERO, SUB-COORDINATOR OF PRIORITY SPECIES OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR THE KNOWLEDGE AND USE OF BIODIVERSITY (CONABIO) OF MEXICO, EXPLAINS TO MONGABAY LATAMESTHER. This problem has been translated into an extinction crisis for the species that is increasingly threatened. According to the red list of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this amphibian is in serious trouble of being able to disappear. The axolotl and the risks for its conservation One of the determining factors that have affected the preservation of the axolotl are invasive species. That is to say: animals that did not originally belong to this space but were introduced by human beings for specific purposes. An example of this is the case of the carp and tilapia that were brought to this place in order to develop aquaculture projects. ANOTHER THREAT IS REPRESENTED BY HUMAN ACTIVITY, WHICH HAS BEEN REFLECTED IN NOTORIOUS WATER POLLUTION. AS IF THAT WERE NOT LITTLE, THE NUMEROUS TOURISM THAT FREQUENTS THIS AREA OF THE CITY DOES NOT TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE CARE OF THE HABITAT OF THIS AMPHIBIAN. It may interest you: INAH finds 17 burials in Xochimilco that reveal the transition from pre-Hispanic to Christian funerals Fortunately, there are several projects in charge of preserving the axolotl. A notable action along these lines is that which scientists and farmers have taken to create chinampas that help filter contaminated water. On the other hand, there are tourist initiatives that seek to raise money for the conservation of this endemic species of the Xochimilco canals. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/ajolote-anfibio-endemico-valle-de-mexico/

  5. A huge explosion has ripped through a mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul, police say. The blast is thought to have occurred during evening prayers, killing at least three people and injuring dozens more, according to the NGO Emergency. Khalid Zadran, the Taliban's Kabul police spokesman, was quoted by local media as saying there had been an explosion in the city's north-west. Reports say the Siddiqi mosque's imam was among the dead. It is unclear who was behind the attack, which comes the week after a prominent pro-Taliban cleric was killed in a suicide bomb blast, also in Kabul. The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the earlier attack. Security forces have arrived at the scene, in a northern Kabul neighbourhood, the spokesman added. Italian NGO Emergency - which operates in Kabul - said three deaths have been recorded so far. The NGO also tweeted to say it had received 27 people wounded in the blast, including children. "Five children [were] among them, including a seven-year-old," it said. A Taliban intelligence official told news agency Reuters that as many as 35 people may have been wounded or killed, and the toll could rise further. Witnesses described hearing a powerful explosion which shattered windows in nearby buildings. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the explosion took place at a mosque among worshippers in the Khair Khana area of Kabul. Intelligence teams were at the blast site and investigations are ongoing, they added. A spokesman for the Taliban said it strongly condemned the attack. The mosque was crowded, the bomb powerful, and another cleric seems to have been in the sights of IS (Islamic State), the group which has emerged as the Taliban's most potent enemy. In the past month, three prominent religious leaders were targeted in Kabul and there were assassinations in other cities. Last week it was Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani, known to be close to the Taliban. This time it's Amir Muhammad Kabuli, said to be an adherent of the more moderate Sufi faith. Video posted on social media showed a scene of carnage. One religious student who was just outside the mosque told the BBC he saw the bodies of the dead and injured sprawled inside, including children attending evening prayers. IS's signature has been its devastating attacks on the minority Shia Hazara community. But their focus now seems to be widening just as the Taliban celebrate their one year in power - a takeover which ended one chapter of a long bloody war but only ushered in yet another. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-62581102

  12. What is the best work from home laptop? As much of the world transitions to working and learning from home, the kind of technology we use has become extraordinarily important. We don't have the support of a trained IT staff, or corporate office infrastructure, so reliability is paramount. Many of us have had to provide for ourselves and upgrade our own laptops, smartphones, cameras, and multiple accessories. Tools such as video conferencing have become indispensable, but we still have to address core requirements such as staying in touch and managing multiple tasks, all while meeting deadlines. Multiple people in a household often have to share computers or work across different devices. If you find yourself wondering how best to adapt to this new world, we have some tips. This is a good time to invest in exactly the kind of equipment you need. We've put together a short guide to buying a new laptop, focusing on features that will be important for people working and learning from home. What to look for in a laptop for working from home Most manufacturers have been pushing extremely thin and light 13-inch and 14-inch models for the past few years, but portability isn't our biggest concern when we're sitting at home. If you have to deal with long commutes and rushing from place to place for meetings and presentations, you'd choose something as light as possible, but that isn't a priority right now. Instead, we can look at the 15-inch segment which has plenty of affordable options. Larger screens are great for multi-tasking, working with lots of content, creative workflows, and of course video conferencing, which is the new normal. Even though screen resolution is usually common at 1920x1080 across sizes, you can take advantage of scaling options in Windows 10 and various applications. Larger laptops also often benefit from better keyboard layouts and more generous trackpads. You're likely to find keyboards with number pads in the 15-inch segment, although these are sometimes cramped. We will be paying close attention to keyboard layout, since productivity depends on being able to type quickly and efficiently without having to adjust to awkward key positioning and constantly check what you're doing. Ports and connectivity matter a lot, especially if you're juggling external hard drives, printers, webcams, headsets, SD cards, and other tools. In fact, we would recommend using a full-sized desktop keyboard and mouse, and elevating your laptop on a table, for a more comfortable posture. Ultraportable laptops might feature only one or two USB Type-C ports but we're looking for plenty of legacy USB ports as well as audio and video outputs, networking, and expansion. Your work might involve simple office tasks such as typing emails, or it might scale to intense workflows involving video editing and production, graphics and animation, software development, or heavy database access. As the situation evolves, you might also find yourself taking on new tasks and learning new skills. Not everyone needs top-tier hardware but it's always good to have more power plus the ability to upgrade down the line. We'll be looking for premium processors, discrete GPUs, fast SSDs, and of course upgradeable RAM and storage. Internet connectivity will be the lifeblood of every stay-at-home worker. You can't be interrupted in the middle of a lecture or video call. Wi-Fi and webcam hardware quality is hard to determine from product listings, so companies that pay attention to such details will also be noticed. Of course we expect our machines to multitask as much as we do. It would be great to have high-quality screens and speakers to watch movies with, and some power under the hood to run modern games. Beyond that, there are things that don't matter quite as much, but are still important in the bigger picture for now as well as the future. These include battery life, ruggedness, cooling efficiency, weight, and aesthetic style. Which laptops to buy for working from home? We have shortlisted several models, sorted by price and segment, that would be suitable for working as well as learning while based at home, plus general-purpose use. These are all available in retail to end users and can be ordered online, which many buyers will prefer. Prices do tend to vary, especially around the upcoming shopping and holiday season, so do check for variants with slightly different specifications. We are not considering refurbished models, although interested buyers should also check for deals on suitable products. While we have not reviewed all the laptops named below, we have compiled detailed information directly from manufacturers as well as from multiple third-party sources. We have considered all aspects of their design, configuration, features, ergonomics, and value for money. We selected only laptops with Windows 10 preloaded. Work from home laptops under Rs. 20,000 While cost is undoubtedly the biggest factor in most people's buying decisions, recent economic factors have led to a general increase in prices across the industry and bargains are hard to find. There are very few laptops available for under Rs. 20,000 and these have extremely basic specifications. Still, they might be suitable for light tasks, general productivity and staying in touch. iBall and Avita are two companies to look out for. iBall's Compbook models are traditional clamshell laptops and we have been satisfied with the performance on offer considering the price. The Avita Magus Lite is a 2-in-1 tablet with a touchscreen and fold-out keyboard cover which could also work for basic tasks. At this price level you'll get a simple Intel Celeron or Pentium processor, 32GB or 64GB of storage, and very basic connectivity. Work from home laptops under Rs. 30,000 The Asus VivoBook 15 M509DA is an interesting option, slipping in right within our budget with a variant priced at Rs. 29,985. It features a modern AMD Athlon Silver CPU with basic integrated Radeon Vega graphics. You get 4GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, 15.6-inch full-HD screen, a USB Type-C port, and a keyboard with number pad. Lenovo's Ideapad S145 features a relatively powerful Ryzen 3 3200U CPU with integrated Radeon Vega graphics, 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. You get a 15.6-inch full-HD screen and a full-sized keyboard. This laptop is listed with Windows 10 Home for Rs. 28,990. The Acer One Z2-485 is priced at Rs. 26,980 and features an Intel Pentium Gold 4415U processor with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. Windows 10 is preinstalled. The screen is a 14-inch 1366x768 panel, which isn't ideal, but otherwise the basics are all in place and the weight is under 2kg. The ASUS E410MA is a rather different option, weighing only 1.3kg and featuring colourful, patterned lid designs. Priced at Rs. 29,999, you get a 14-inch full-HD screen, virtual number pad on the trackpad, Intel Pentium Silver N5030 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD. HP offers its 250 G7 2A9A5PA business laptop at Rs. 28,999. It features an Intel Celeron N4020 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive, and a 15.6-inch 1366x768-pixel screen. There's a 720p webcam and keyboard with number pad, and HP touts its durable, business-grade chassis. Work from home laptops under Rs. 50,000 HP lists its 15s-eq0024au laptop for Rs. 43,499 with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor, 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. There's a 15.6-inch full-HD screen and HD webcam, plus full-sized keyboard. Windows 10 as well as Office Home & Student 2019. The Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i features an Intel Core i5-1035G1 CPU, 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. Windows 10 and Office Home & Student 2019 are preloaded. You get a 14-inch full-HD screen and there's no number pad, but this model weighs 1.6kg. The list price is Rs. 49,990. Xiaomi's Mi Notebook 14 is available in three configurations below Rs. 50,000. Pushing right up against that at Rs. 49,999, you can get an Intel Core i5-10210 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, a 14-inch full-HD screen, and even a basic Nvidia GeForce MX250 discrete GPU. Windows 10 Home is included and the company promises 10 hours of battery life, in a 1.5kg body with slim screen borders. An external 720p webcam is included. https://gadgets360.com/laptops/guide/laptop-30000-40000-50000-work-learn-from-home-price-india-dell-hp-lenovo-acer-asus-mi-flipkart-amazon-2310779

  13. Introduction Xiaomi's budget Poco line hardly needs an introduction. Many models in the family have been enjoying enormous po[CENSORED]rity due to their great value proposition. The Poco M line is now up to its fourth generation, and today we have the vanilla Poco M4 5G for review. Since Poco's naming scheme is kind of a mess right now, a bit of clarification is in order. The Poco M4 5G appears to be positioned as the cheapest offer in the current Poco M4 lineup. It is arguably more related to the Poco M4 Pro 5G than the Poco M4 Pro, by rocking a similar size 6.58-inch 90Hz LCD display as that model. In most other aspects, the Poco M4 5G is a downgrade compared to the M4 Pro 5G, though. One more point of clarification which is really crucial - the phone we have for review today is the global version of the Poco M4 5G. Compared to the older Indian variant, it has a lesser camera setup with a 13MP main camera, instead of 50MP and a 5MP selfie, instead of 8MP. Xiaomi Poco M4 5G specs at a glance: Body: 164.0x76.1x8.9mm, 200g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass 3), plastic frame, plastic back; Splash resistant. Display: 6.58" IPS LCD, 90Hz, 1080x2400px resolution, 20:9 aspect ratio, 400ppi. Chipset: MediaTek MT6833 Dimensity 700 (7 nm): Octa-core (2x2.2 GHz Cortex-A76 & 6x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55); Mali-G57 MC2. Memory: 64GB 4GB RAM, 128GB 6GB RAM; UFS 2.2; microSDXC (dedicated slot). OS/Software: Android 12, MIUI 13. Rear camera: Wide (main): 13 MP, PDAF; Depth: 2 MP, f/2.4. Front camera: 5 MP, f/2.2, (wide), 1.0µm. Video capture: Rear camera: 1080p@30fps; Front camera: 1080p@30fps. Battery: 5000mAh; Fast charging 18W. Misc: Fingerprint reader (side-mounted); NFC; Infrared port; 3.5mm jack. Both of the M4 5G variants are rocking a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset instead of the Dimensity 810 inside the Poco M4 Pro 5G. It only has a single speaker instead of a stereo setup, only supports 18W charging instead of 33W, has lower resolution main and selfie cameras and is just IP52 rated instead of IP53. It also omits the ultrawide snapper. Unquestionably, the M4 5G is noticeably downgraded. These downgrades should naturally be reflected in the price delta between the two, right? Well, kind of. On the Indian market, a vanilla Poco M4 5G starts at around INR 13,000 for a 64GB, 4GB unit at the time of writing, and a Poco M4 Pro 5G goes for about INR 13,500. That's hardly a substantial difference, and pricing between the two is even closer on Amazon UK and pricing for the further downgraded European version isn't much different. That puts the Poco M4 5G in a pretty tight spot right from the get-go. Still, prices change, and promos are a thing, so without further ado, let's see if the Poco M4 5G is a decent smartphone worthy of your attention, to begin with. Unboxing As usual, let's start with the box and retail package. The Poco M4 5G ships in a two-piece bright yellow, thick cardboard box. Perfect for protecting the phone during shipping and also quite attention-grabbing. In typical Poco fashion, the accessory package is relatively rich. The basics are well covered with a 22.5W Xiaomi charger. It is rated for outputs of 5V@3A, 9V@2.23A, 12V@1.67A and 10V@2.25A. It is a bit overspecked for the 18W charging cap of the Poco M4 5G itself. Alongside it, you get a USB Type-A to Type-C cable. Nothing fancy, just a short white cable. As is usually the case with Poco, a thick transparent TPU case is in the box, and the phone also ships with a pre-applied thin screen protector. Basically, everything you need to start using it confidently straight away. https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_poco_m4_5g-review-2464.php

  14. Every time someone has opened a fresh Google Search page today, Florida high school student Sophie Araque-Liu has, via her artwork, has reminded them of the importance of mental health and of caring for yourself. Hers was the winning artwork chosen as part of the Doodle for Google 2022 contest. Her simple yet profound entry depicts a daughter in an emotional embrace with her mother. And all day, it’s greeting visitors to Google’s main search page. As you can see above, her image takes over the part of the logo where the two O’s would otherwise be. High schooler’s artwork on the Google Search homepage Her winning entry fulfilled a specific prompt from Google as part of this year’s Doodle for Google contest. Students were asked to design their artwork around the theme of “I care for myself by …” The search giant announced the finalists in July. And then, today, Google unveiled Sophie’s as the winner for the “thoughtfulness, heart, and artistry” her entry presented. Moreover, Google added that Sophie’s Doodle — titled Not Alone — speaks to the importance of leaning on a support system. And of asking for help in tough times. “I care for myself by accepting others’ care for me,” Sophie said, in a statement attached to her winning Google Doodle that adorns the Google Search page. “Often I struggle to shoulder a burden on my own, and forget that I have so many people, like my mom, who care about me and want to help me. Opening up and letting others support me not only relieves my stress. It lets me tackle things I could never do on my own.” In truth, we spend so much time in a kind of rapid-fire, transactional relationship with the Google Search page — query entered, results attained — that it’s nice to take a brief moment and see something like this to accompany that digital interaction. “Asking for help” “I chose to focus on the theme of asking for help based on my own experiences,” Sophie continued, in an interview with Google. “A couple years ago, I was struggling a lot mentally and I was honestly pretty embarrassed and scared to tell my friends and family. But when I did open up to them, I was met with so much love and support. So I really wanted to encourage others to not be afraid to look for help if they need it!” https://bgr.com/tech/the-story-behind-that-heartwarming-image-youre-seeing-on-googles-homepage-today/

  15. A study carried out by BirdLife International, on extinct birds around the world, revealed the following results. In addition to the birds that have already become extinct, the study carried out by BirdLife International, on extinct birds around the world, recommended adding eight more species to this gloomy list where the extinction of these species is confirmed. extinct birds glaucous macaw The Glaucous Macaw (Anodorhynchus glaucus), a species now considered critically endangered (possibly extinct). Pernambuco Owl The Pernambuco owlet is critically endangered (Glaucidium mooreorum), no more than 15 centimeters tall. Po'o-uli The po'o-uli (Melamprosops phaeosoma), an extinct bird endemic to the Hawaiian archipelago. Approximate extinction in 2004. Alagoas ticotico El ticotico de Alagoas (Philydor novaesi), extinct in 2011 approximately. The Spix's Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) should be considered extinct in the wild. However, it still exists in various captive po[CENSORED]tions, the last known individual in the wild disappearing in the late 2000s. These are some of the extinct or practically extinct bird species. Historically, bird extinctions have been caused primarily by the impact of invasive alien species (46%) and by hunting or trapping on islands (26%). However, the loss of habitats as a result of deforestation on the continents has been decisive in these latest extinctions. Read on: Why don't birds get electrocuted when perching on wires? FIVE OF THE EIGHT RECENTLY DETECTED EXTINCTIONS HAVE OCCURRED IN SOUTH AMERICA, FOUR OF THEM IN BRAZIL. "THIS SITUATION REFLECTS THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF THE HIGH DEGREE OF DEFORESTATION IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD," BIRDLIFE INTERNATIONAL EMPHASIZES IN A COMMUNICATION. The study authors have assessed 51 critically endangered species for eight consecutive years. On the other hand, the researchers also recommend that four species (the Glaucous Macaw, the Pernambuco Owl, the Javan Lapwing, and the Diademed Lory) previously considered critically endangered be considered possibly extinct. However, future studies are required to confirm its extinction. 17. A week after an apparent Ukrainian attack on a Russian military base in occupied Crimea, an arms store at another military facility has been hit by a series of explosions. Blaming "sabotage", Russian officials said a fire triggered the blasts in the Dzhankoi area, another fire hit a power station and a railway was damaged. A string of blasts last week destroyed Russian warplanes at a Black Sea base on the Crimean coast. Ukraine has not admitted that attack. However, presidential office adviser Mykhailo Podolyak has described the latest incident as "demilitarisation in action", indicating that the explosions were not accidental. Crimea was seized from Ukraine and then annexed by Russia in early 2014. Russia gave no indication of the kind of sabotage involved in Tuesday's attack. The FSB security service said Ukrainian saboteurs had also blown up six electricity pylons this month inside Russia itself. The attacks in the Kurchatov area, about 100km (60 miles) from Ukraine's north-east border, had affected the "technological process of functioning" of the Kursk nuclear plant, it added. However, Rosenergoatom, the operator of the plant, has disputed the FSB account and attributed the lowered output "to a fault at a sub-station outside the territory of the nuclear power plant". Russia's defence ministry said Tuesday's explosions in northern Crimea took place at a temporary ammunition storage site on a base near the village of Maiske at about 06:15 Moscow time (03:15 GMT). A Crimean Tatar leader, Refat Chubarov, called the explosions a "hit" that could be heard "far across the steppe". The defence ministry in Moscow said there had been no "serious" casualties, but Russian-appointed regional head Sergei Aksyonov visited the site and said 2,000 people had been moved from a nearby village and two people had been wounded. "One man has a shrapnel wound and one was crushed by a wall. Their lives are not in danger, fortunately," he said. The spokesman for Ukraine's Air Force Command, Yuriy Ignat, said the explosions were caused by Russia "not observing fire precautions". "We are of course satisfied by the fact, because Dzhankoi [where the explosions took place] was one of the locations where the enemy kept their helicopters and other equipment," Mr Ignat told a news conference. When Russian forces unleashed the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February, they used their bases on the annexed Crimean peninsula to capture large swathes of southern Ukraine. Russian occupation has stretched across two southern regions in particular, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and Ukraine has vowed to launch a counter-offensive to recapture areas under Russian control. After the Russian air base at Saky was hit last Tuesday, satellite images revealed significant damage, with at least eight warplanes destroyed. Although Russia said that incident was also accidental, there was little doubt the base had come under Ukrainian attack, because of the precise nature of the destruction. The UK ministry of defence said the blasts had "significantly degraded" the aviation capability of the Russian navy's Black Sea fleet. The latest blasts in northern Crimea are reminiscent of a string of recent attacks behind Russian lines in eastern Ukraine. Since June, Ukrainian forces have used US Himars multiple rocket launchers to hit as many as 50 arms stores, according to the defence minister. Bridges in the south have also been hit, jeopardising vital supply lines from Crimea to Kherson. However, Russian media have suggested that drones are more likely to have been used in Crimea than missiles. The Kommersant website reported that a Russian military airbase also came under attack further south in Crimea on Tuesday, at Hvardiiske near Simferopol, possibly from a small drone. The apparent ability of Ukraine's military to reach so far behind enemy lines is of significant embarrassment to the Russians. The explosions at Saky were visible from nearby beaches, while videos posted afterwards on social media showed streams of tourists leaving Crimea, across a bridge built across the Kerch Strait after the Russian annexation. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62560041
