  3. With more than a century of lifespan, the coelacanth is in no hurry to live. Rather, they grow, eat, reproduce, and swim slowly. It has been described as a "living fossil". Among the sea currents of Africa, near the coast of Madagascar, this is the oldest fish recorded in the world's oceans. With an impressive ability to modify its genetics almost nothing over the millennia, the coelacanth has proven to be a survivor of the last mass extinction. Today we know that, in addition to everything, it is a very long-lived animal. Coelacanth: an ancient marine species Not even the most fearsome dinosaurs could withstand the radical changes that the Earth underwent after the asteroid impact. After that, most of the prehistoric biological diversity disappeared, leaving the ecosystems of the available species in a precarious condition. Despite the obstacles that this climatic impact represented at a planetary level, the coelacanth continued its evolutionary path β€”almost unchanged. How long do coelacanths live? A recent study revealed that, in addition to being incredibly adaptable to changes in the environment, the coelacanth is one of the longest-living fish on record. Originally, it was believed that he could live up to 20 years. However, the figure multiplied by five. This new estimate was made in France, based on the scales of these animals. Like the rings on tree trunks, it seems that this coating is the key to finding out how long a specific specimen has lived. It turned out that some of the specimens found were over 100 years old. Not only that: females could carry pregnancies for up to 5 years. With more than a century of life, the coelacanth is in no hurry to live. On the contrary, in addition to the fact that females can carry very long gestation processes, there is a record that this species does not reproduce until it is 50 years old. They grow at incredibly slow rates, making hatchlings particularly vulnerable to industrial fishing. Knowing more about their ways of life and behavior patterns, according to the main author of the study, Dr. Bruno Ernande from the University of Montpellier, will be able to provide guidelines to ensure their conservation. The fact that they are particularly scarce increases the pressure to prevent them from becoming extinct. Changes in the seas driven by the climate crisis and overfishing are some of the obstacles that this species is currently facing. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/celacanto-pez-prehistorico-gigante-puede-vivir-mas-de-100-anos/

  5. Ukrainian officials have ridiculed Russia's accusation that its special services were behind the killing of Darya Dugina, the daughter of an ultra-nationalist, in a car-bomb attack. "We don't work in this way," said National Security and Defence Council secretary Oleksiy Danilov. A memorial service for Ms Dugina, 29, took place in Moscow on Tuesday. Ms Dugina, a commentator on a Russian nationalist TV channel, died when her car blew up on the outskirts of Moscow. Her influential father, Alexander Dugin, may have been the intended target of the attack. His expansionist ideas of a New Russia or "Novorossiya" on Ukrainian territory are said to have influenced President Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014. President Putin condemned the "vile, cruel crime" and posthumously awarded Ms Dugina the Order of Courage. Her 60-year-old father paid tribute to her as a "rising star at the start of her journey". She was brutally murdered in front of him by Russia's enemies, he said, and he went on to call for victory over Ukraine. In Kyiv, the security and defence council secretary said Ukraine had nothing to do with the bombing: "We have more important tasks for our boys and girls... The FSB did this and is now suggesting that one of our people did it," he told Ukrainian TV. Mr Danilov also claimed Russia was planning a series of attacks inside Russia an attempt to mobilise a po[CENSORED]tion whose support for the war was waning. Ukrainian presidential office adviser Mykhailo Podolyak, said Russian "propaganda lives in a fictional world", adding that the car bombing was part of a struggle within Russia's special services. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it had solved the case and blamed Ukraine directly. Its claims were widely reported by state TV, and pro-Kremlin commentators called for immediate revenge. Russia says farewell to 'warrior' Dugina By Will Vernon in Moscow Russian state TV broadcast live pictures of the memorial service at Ostankino TV centre in Moscow. Ultra-nationalist thinker Alexander Dugin paid tribute to his daughter, saying "she died for Russia, for the people". Russian MPs called her a "warrior for the sovereignty of Russia". One controversial MP, Leonid Slutsky, called for a square in Kyiv to be renamed in Darya's honour once "denazification" - code for Russia annexing Ukraine - had been "completed". The killing remains a top story for Russian state-controlled television. All the TV channels have been reporting as fact the FSB Security Service's claims that the culprit was a Ukrainian secret agent in a Mini Cooper. But some are questioning how the Russian authorities allegedly cracked this case, and the speed with which they did so. It took the FSB less than two days to "solve" the murder - releasing a detailed statement as well as video materials. Many opposition politicians, most of whom are now living abroad due to persecution in Russia, have been asking why other political assassinations in Russia remain unsolved - often for many years. There are other concerns, too - that Darya's murder may become a pretext for increased repression in Russia or for further attacks against Ukraine. We still don't really know who was behind the killing, why Daria Dugina was killed and whether she was the intended target. Russian demands for retribution came as Ukraine prepared to mark 31 years of independence on Wednesday, which coincides with six months since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began. The US state department has warned that Russia is stepping up efforts to attack Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and government facilities. Fears of an escalated Russian attack have prompted Kyiv to ban public events while the city of Kharkiv has brought forward an overnight curfew to start at 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT). According to the FSB's account of Darya Dugina's death, a Ukrainian woman linked to security services in Kyiv had moved to Russia in July alongside her young daughter. The woman had rented an apartment in the same building as Ms Dugina for a month, preparing for the attack, it alleged. In that time, she allegedly followed her target through Moscow in a Mini Cooper - for which she used three different licence plates. The FSB later released video purporting to show the suspect's car entering Russia, then of her entering Ms Dugina's building and finally leaving Russia for Estonia. Ms Dugina and her father were attending a festival near Moscow on Saturday evening where he was giving a lecture. They had reportedly intended to leave in the same car, but changed their plans at the last minute. Investigators said explosives had been planted underneath the Toyota Land Cruiser she was driving. Video appeared to show him looking on in shock as her car burned. Ms Dugina was a vocal supporter of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a political commentator for her father's International Eurasian Movement organisation. She wrote regularly for pro-Kremlin media outlets and had been placed under sanctions by the UK in July as "a frequent and high-profile contributor of disinformation in relation to Ukraine". "My daughter Darya Dugina was brutally murdered in front of me," his statement on Telegram read. "She was a beautiful Orthodox woman, patriot, war reporter, an expert for central TV and philosopher." Russian media linked the suspect identified by the FSB to Ukraine's Azov regiment, which Moscow says is a terrorist group. The Azov regiment flatly denied the allegation. Estonia rejected the Russian claim that Ms Dugina's alleged killer had fled across the border as a "provocation in a very long line of provocations by the Russian Federation". Independent Russian outlet Agentstvo raised several questions about the FSB version of events, surrounding the woman identified as the killer and the Mini Cooper car. It wondered why she would take a child with her on such a dangerous mission and said video of the car had been posted in the Kyiv region three days before the blast. Exiled former Russian MP Ilya Ponomarev argued it was the work of a little-known Russian resistance group called the National Republican Army. The former MP who moved to Ukraine said the group had carried out several actions already, although there was no public reference to the group before Sunday. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62643274

  8. The megalodon had such a wide diet that it acted as a regulator of large predators in prehistoric oceans. The megalodon's jaws were packed with sharp fangs. The largest pieces of the species that have been found reach 19 centimeters. As one of the most voracious animals of Prehistory, they dominated the seas 5 million years ago. Even the fiercest predators of that remote past fled from them, according to a study recently published in Science Advances. For the investigation, scientists calculated the approximate dimensions of the megalodon using a 3D model. With them, they determined that these prehistoric animals may have had no problem devouring entire killer whalesβ€”or animals that resembled them in size and mass. For this reason, they have been classified as 'super predators' for decades. We suggest: The great white shark drove the fearsome megalodon to extinction millions of years ago, a study suggests Orcas and other predators for breakfast The researchers acknowledge that it is difficult to infer the actual dimensions of the megalodon. They even qualify the current estimates as "rudimentary." More than anything, because only remains of fangs are preserved. Other parts of their bodies have rarely been found. Even with these limitations, scientists discovered that this prehistoric titan was larger than originally thought. However, the teeth are enough to calculate the speed with which these apex predators swam, as well as the type of food they had in the past. With these fossil remains, they obtained the first full-body three-dimensional model of this giant shark: β€œWE ESTIMATE THAT AN ADULT O. MEGALODON COULD NAVIGATE AT ABSOLUTE SPEEDS FASTER THAN ANY CURRENT SHARK SPECIES AND COMPLETELY CONSUME PREY THE SIZE OF MODERN APEX PREDATORS,” THE AUTHORS WRITE FOR SCIENCE. With this, the megalodon had no problem adapting its diet to 'large prey', as the researchers describe them. On the contrary, in its long migrations, it was able to adapt to the species it encountered along the way. With this, also, the species contributed to the ecological balance of the prehistoric oceans. Above all, because it regulated the po[CENSORED]tions of other ancient predators. With all of the above, the authors think that "its extinction probably had a great impact on the global transfer of nutrients", as well as on the prehistoric food chain. Speculative measures Despite the euphoria generated by the megalodon tusk finds, the researchers at DePaul University in Chicago know that the measurements they made are only approximations. β€œTHE SIZE AND SHAPE OF OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE SKELETON, SUCH AS THE SKULL, THE JAWS AND ALL THE FINS, REMAIN SPECULATION,” KENSHU SHIMADA, PROFESSOR OF PALEOBIOLOGY AT DEPAUL UNIVERSITY IN CHICAGO, EXPLAINS TO THE NEW YORK TIMES. Still, it is certain that not even the largest predators of the Cretaceous period could cope with the ravenous hunger of this prehistoric giant. From this 3D model, rough as it is, it's clear that the megalodon could feast on killer whales, sharks, and other prehistoric beasts in the deep sea. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/el-megalodon-tenia-una-dieta-tan-amplia-que-regulo-a-otros-depredadores-prehistoricos/

  10. UK intelligence agencies are accused of tipping off Indian authorities about a British national before his abduction and alleged torture by Punjab police. Jagtar Singh Johal, from Dumbarton, was in India in 2017 when his family say he was forced into an unmarked car. He says he was then tortured over days, including with electrocution. He has remained in detention since then. Successive British prime ministers have raised his case but India's government denies he was tortured or mistreated. In May, Mr Johal was formally charged with conspiracy to commit murder and being a member of a terrorist gang. He will be presented with a full list of the charges against him next month and faces a possible death penalty. Now the human rights group Reprieve has shown the BBC documentation that it says is compelling evidence that his arrest followed a tip-off from British intelligence. The UK government says it will not comment on an ongoing legal case. Scot held in India faces murder conspiracy charge Reprieve says it has matched several details relating to his case to a specific claim of mistreatment documented in a report by the watchdog that oversees the intelligence agencies. "In the course of an investigation", says the Investigatory Powers Commissioner's Office (IPCO) report, "MI5 passed intelligence to a liaison partner via the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). "The subject of the intelligence was arrested by the liaison partner in their country. The individual told the British Consular Official that he had been tortured." Mr Johal is not named in the report, but Reprieve's investigators are adamant the facts match his case due to the dates concerned, the lobbying by British prime ministers and supporting evidence detailed in the Indian press. In 2017, the Hindustan Times reported that Mr Johal had "come under the scanner" after "a source in the UK" provided the Punjab police with "vague information" about a key man, "Johal". The Indian authorities accuse Mr Johal of involvement in murders they claim are related to Sikh nationalism, though he denies any wrongdoing. Mr Johal was an active blogger and campaigner for Sikh human rights, which are said to have brought him to the attention of the Indian authorities. But his brother Gurpreet told the BBC he was not aware of any activity that could be considered illegal. Mr Johal is currently being held in a Delhi prison. He has alleged that, following his arrest, he was held incommunicado, was brutally interrogated for hours on end, and was initially denied access to lawyers or British consular officials. He says he was made to sign blank sheets of paper that were later used against him as a false confession. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he raised Mr Johal's case with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, during a trip to India in April this year. His predecessor, Theresa May, also raised the case with the Indian government during her tenure. On 12 August, Mr Johal lodged a claim in the High Court against the Foreign Office, the Home Office and the attorney general, alleging that UK intelligence agencies unlawfully shared information with the Indian authorities when there was a risk he could be tortured. Reprieve says this case suggests the government has failed to fix longstanding shortcomings in its policy on torture and the death penalty, and has learned little from past failings such as the MI6 tip-off that led to the rendition and torture of Libyan dissident Abdulhakim Belhaj. Commenting on the allegations, MP Steve Baker said: "This appalling case, where UK intelligence sharing has been linked to brutal torture, illustrates vividly why the National Security Bill needs to be improved." Responding on behalf of all three accused government departments, the Foreign Office said: "It would be inappropriate to comment on an ongoing legal case." https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-62639233
