https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-shoots-down-reports-of-a-cpu-price-increase Recent rumors of increases to Intel's CPUs are overblown. Yesterday, German media outlet PCGamesHardware posted a story claiming that Intel had told several German wholesalers that the company would soon raise the pricing of its "Core" processors for a number of reasons, including to build new semiconductor fabs. Several US media outlets soon picked up the report, fueling the rumor. When we reached out to Intel for more details, the company threw cold water on the rumors: "Generally, Intel does not comment on speculation regarding price changes to its portfolio. However, we can confirm that Intel has not sent the letter described to customers or partners and has not initiated a price change to its CPU portfolio at this time. We have no further comment to share on the matter." The original report was more than a bit flimsy; a forum member at PCGHX claimed they had been told by wholesalers that Intel would hike the pricing of all of its shipping CPUs within a few weeks, and that letters had been issued to wholesalers to that effect. The PCGamesHardware report further expanded on the forum post, saying the individual noted the letters to the wholesalers said that all of Intel's existing Core processors, like Alder Lake, Raptor Lake, and Raptor Lake Refresh, would be impacted, as well as the upcoming Core and Core Ultra chips. That's at least somewhat believable, but the report then takes a serious left turn, going on to claim Intel expanded on the reasoning behind the price cuts in the letters, saying it needed to increase pricing to fund its restructuring, along with 'refinancing' for existing and upcoming fab construction projects. Surely Intel wouldn't need to justify its price hikes to wholesalers, nor include language to that effect in its communications, making this a thoroughly unbelievable report that should have raised some red flags. That didn't stop a few publications from picking up the story today, and given the natural order of things, the story would have surely gathered more steam over the coming days. Intel's statement shuts down the speculation firmly, and while it doesn't rule out any future price hikes, the company assures us not to expect them to occur imminently. That makes sense — even though we are seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, the CPU market continues to slog through the worst market conditions it's seen in 30 years, so now probably wouldn't be a good time to raise CPU pricing.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-4-season-1-how-to-farm-guaranteed-wrathful-malignant-hearts/1100-6516333/ In order to take advantage of this farming method, players will need to have progressed to the final seasonal quest, "The Cold Hard Truth." The quest will task players with entering the Velkhova Church Undercroft in the Fractured Peaks zone. Once inside, players will meet up with Season 1's main character, Cormond. He will task players with helping him to perform a ritual to summon Varshan the Consumed. Killing the boss always rewards a Wrathful Heart, with Cormond even telling players to pick it up off the ground. The key is to defeat the final boss of this dungeon quest, but do not turn in the quest and complete it. This will allow you to grab the loot from the boss, leave the dungeon, reset it, and then repeat the dungeon whenever you want. You can reset dungeons by either clicking the "Reset Dungeon" button at the bottom of your quest tab or by simply logging out and logging back into the game. Though players will always get a guaranteed Wrathful Heart from the boss, there is also a chance to grab Wrathful Hearts from other Malignant enemies within the dungeon. One rare Malignant enemy spawns just before the boss encounter and has a chance of being a Wrathful Malignant enemy, so keep an eye out in order to increase the number of Wrathful Malignant Hearts you can earn per run. If your character is powerful enough, you can run through the entire dungeon and defeat the boss in a matter of minutes, making this an incredibly lucrative farm. The only downside to this method is if you complete the quest by accident or already completed it prior to knowing about this farming strategy, you are essentially locked out of the dungeon if you're playing solo. However, all hope isn't lost. You'll simply need to team up with a friend or another player on the quest and join their party. Even if you've already completed it, defeating the boss as a member of a party that has not completed the quest will still grant you the Wrathful Heart as a reward.

https://www.pocketgamer.com/best-games/mobile-games-of-2023/ Here it is: the list of the best mobile games of 2023 so far! We'll be adding more reviews as the games get released, so make sure to bookmark this page and check it every now and then. You can also have a look at the best mobile games of 2022 if you're feeling a little nostalgic! ALL THE MOBILE GAMES WE'VE REVIEWED IN 2023 Every year, we review hundreds of new mobile games, picking out the cream of the crop for you to play. It's not as easy a process as you might think. For a start, there's definitely no time to review everything - our editors and reviewers look through the stacks of titles released each month and pick out those which we think have the most promise. There are tens of thousands of mobile games released every year, and we only have so much time. So, even before games are reviewed, they're filtered through on multiple levels before that selection. But, with us doing so many reviews each year, we thought it was sensible to create this resource, so that you can, at a quick glance, see the best mobile games of 2023 by review ranking. We'll let you in on what might be quite a well-known secret: the teams at Steel Media (that's Pocket Gamer, Pocket Gamer France, 148Apps, App Spy, and more) really love mobile games - as well we should, because we've been reviewing them for over 15 years now, or, if you want to do that weird thing people do where they add up the collective years to get an obscene number, the sites have been reviewing mobile games for over fifty years collectively... That means that there's a lot of knowledge in these halls, and it also means that we are quite precise when it comes to picking which ones we do decide to review. Below you will find - by awarded score and within that, alphabetical order - each of the games we've chosen to review this year so far. Decide for yourself which of them are the best mobile games of 2023! 5 Star - 10/10 - Pocket Gamer Platinum Award Lost in Play review - July 18th, 2023 - Pocket Gamer Omega Strikers review - May 5th, 2023 - https://www.pcgamesn.com/dreamworks-all-star-kart-racing/shrek Shrek has left his swamp and is making a return to gaming in a new racing game called DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing. Say that title three times fast, it might be a bit ogre-whelming. The iconic green machine will be joining a cast of other childhood favorite characters in what looks to be a Mario Kart-like experience. DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing is set to be developed by Bamtang Games, the same team responsible for the Nickelodeon Kart Racer series, another child-friendly group of racing games. Shrek will be just one of the racers you can choose from, joining a total selection of 20 playable characters. Many of these have been picked straight out of our favorite childhood films, such as Astrid and Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon, or Po from Kung Fu Panda. Maps will also likely be familiar to those of us who grew up obsessed with animated movies, with possibilities such as the New York City Zoo from Madagascar or The Kingdom of Far Far Away from Shrek. DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing is set to release later this year and will be available for purchase on Steam for $39.99 /£34.99, with an optional Digital Deluxe version costing slightly more at $49.99 / £44.99 which comes with two exclusive characters and vehicles. While no specific date within 2023 has been announced just yet, the racing game is likely to drop within the next few months as we are more than halfway through the year now. If you want some other fun games to play with your friends while you wait to get Shrek’d later this year, be sure to look through a few of these great multiplayer games. Alternatively, browse our round-up of the best upcoming PC games to be excited about that aren’t the nostalgic racing game.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-66291090 Controversial guidance used to vet potential speakers for government-organised events will be changed, a Cabinet Office minister has said. The advice saw weapons expert Dan Kaszeta banned from addressing the Ministry of Defence due to criticisms he made of the government on Twitter. Mr Kaszeta called the decision an "outrage against free speech". He has since received an apology and the government has said it is now reviewing the advice. In a written statement, published on Thursday, Cabinet Office Minister Jeremy Quin said the guidance had originally been developed to help civil servants avoid issuing speaking invitations to "individuals or organisations who have expressed or supported extremist views". The aim, he said, was to prevent events from taking place which "might lead to the impartiality of the civil service being called into question or its reputation otherwise brought into disrepute". However, Mr Quin said the guidance was not being used in the way it was originally intended and that there was a risk of it being misinterpreted. "It is important that we protect civil service impartiality but not in a way that could result in adverse unintended consequences," he added. Weapons expert cut from event due to Twitter posts Government apologises to weapons expert it barred The minister said he had decided to withdraw the current guidance, review it and reissue it in the early autumn "having ensured that the guidance strikes the right balance". In a letter sent to Mr Kaszeta's lawyers, seen by BBC Newsnight, the government says it does not accept that the guidance is "unlawful" but adds - as set out in the written statement - that the Cabinet Office Guidance and the Diversity Network Guidance are being reviewed. The letter adds that both documents are "likely to be revised" following the review. The decision comes three months after Mr Kaszeta - a global expert on nerve agents - was told he could not attend a Ministry of Defence conference because civil servants had "identified material that criticises government officials and policy" on his social media platforms. In April, Mr Kaszeta, told BBC Two's Newsnight he was "outraged" that the government's trawl through his Twitter account - on which he had criticised Brexit and the government's asylum policy - meant he was no longer able to attend the conference on chemical weapons demilitarisation (CWD). In an email from the Ministry of Defence, Mr Kaszeta was told: "The check on your social media has identified material that criticises government officials and policy. It is for this reason and not because we do not value your technical insight, that I'm afraid that we have no choice and must cancel your invitation to the CWD conference." In another example of a speaker being banned for criticising the government, Prof Kate Devlin saw herself disinvited from an event about women in tech. The artificial intelligence expert told the Independent she was blocked from attending due to her criticisms of the government's Online Safety Bill. A Cabinet Office spokesperson said: "The government is committed to protecting free speech whilst maintaining civil service impartiality. We are reviewing the guidance and have temporarily withdrawn it to prevent any misinterpretation of the rules."

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/woman-found-dead-grizzly-bear-encounter-yellowstone-national-park-rcna95872 Woman was found dead in Montana on Saturday after coming into contact with a grizzly bear on a trail west of Yellowstone National Park. The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks said in a statement on Sunday that the woman was found deceased on a trail near West Yellowstone, a Montana town nestled in the Custer Gallatin National Forest just west of Yellowstone National Park. They said the woman was found deceased “following an apparent bear encounter” based on what investigators determined were grizzly bear tracks at the scene. The department said the investigation into the grizzly attack was ongoing. Rangers issued an emergency closure of the area where the woman was found, which is po[CENSORED]r with hikers. Though the department’s statement said the death appeared to have followed the woman’s interaction with the bear, it did not confirm her cause of death. The attack comes amid a rise in Montana’s grizzly bear po[CENSORED]tion and an increase in sightings. The department put out a news release last week warning visitors that staff had confirmed grizzly bear sightings throughout the state, “particularly in areas between the Northern Continental Divide and the Great Yellowstone ecosystems.” They implored those camping and visiting parks to carry bear spray, store their food while outside and tend to their garbage. At Glacier National Park, about 670 miles north of Yellowstone, a "food-conditioned" grizzly bear was euthanized on Thursday after the creature began to exhibit "increasingly aggressive behavior, the National Park Service said. Bison leaves woman with spinal fractures during trip to Yellowstone The park service warned that once a bear receives a "human food reward," it can become food-conditioned, which can lead to aggressive behavior in pursuit of a meal. "This behavior posed a threat to human safety making it necessary to remove it from the po[CENSORED]tion," the National Park Service said.

https://www.cycleworld.com/motorcycle-reviews/triumph-speed-400-exclusive-first-test-review/ REVIEWS 2024 Triumph Speed 400 Exclusive First Test We get the keys to Triumph’s entry-level single early for a quick ride. By Adam Child July 19, 2023 The British motorcycle industry has a long history of collaboration with India and two-wheel needs of the subcontinent, so it’s no surprise that the emergence of the new single-cylinder Triumph Speed 400 and its sister model, the Scrambler 400 X, is the result of a partnership between Triumph UK and Indian manufacturing giant Bajaj Auto. These bikes represent the marque’s first steps into the true entry-level market since being resurrected more than 40 years ago, and are hugely important bikes for Triumph. The new Speed 400 was shown to the press at the end of June, and now we get to throw a leg over the new 398cc single to get a taste of what the world can expect when it goes on sale in 2024. 2024 Triumph Speed 400 parked on garage driveway Triumph’s all-new entry-level single-cylinder Speed 400 opens up the prestigious British brand to everyone.Chippy Wood When first shown the bike at its press unveiling back in June, I was immediately impressed. While we didn’t know its price (and still don’t), we could safely guess it will be competitive with the budget-focused competition, which Triumph see as BMW’s G 310 R, KTM’s 390 Duke, and Royal Enfield’s 350 range, yet it was hard to see where corners had been cut to make it a player in the $5,000 market. The new bike will be produced in Thailand and Brazil but matches a British Triumph’s quality. 2024 Triumph Speed 400 headlight details Looking at the details, it’s difficult to find cut corners on the Speed 400.Chippy Wood Another positive is that the Speed 400 has been designed from the ground up. Parts are not borrowed from existing models, and you won’t find its single-cylinder engine in any other bike in India, Thailand, or elsewhere. All its components have been specifically and newly designed, emphatically declaring the Speed 400 a fully fledged member of Triumph’s range of Modern Classics. Deep in the heart of the English Cotswolds and glistening in bright summer sunshine is Triumph’s new Speed 400, a small yet significant new machine for both Triumph and Bajaj Auto. Now, with key in hand and a leg thrown over a low, 31.1-inch seat, those good impressions from earlier in June continue. I’m greeted by clean, clear clocks featuring an old-fashioned analog speedo plus a digital rev counter and large gear position indicator. The detailing is typical Triumph—I’m a sucker for a nice twist-open gas tank cap—while the switch gear is neat and the one-piece seat as welcoming as it looks. 2024 Triumph Speed 400 riding on country road At speed, a bystander may mistake the Speed 400 for one of Triumph’s larger Modern Classics.Chippy Wood There’s a freshness and a familiarity too, one that lovers of Triumph’s larger-capacity classics will appreciate, while the specification sheet (ABS, traction control, 43mm inverted Big Piston fork, 17-inch cast alloy wheels, and Metzeler Sportec M9 RR tires) would catch the eye of any punter seeking a far larger, premium retro. Turn the key, press the starter button, and the 39.5 hp, 398cc single barks pleasingly into life. Given the Speed 400′s Euro 5 compliance, I was expecting its exhaust to sound about as lovely as a hair dryer, but there is a charisma and energy and its acoustic output. It’s not loud, but there is certainly charm. 2024 Triumph Speed 400 right side engine details Triumph claims 39.5 hp from the Speed 400’s 398cc DOHC liquid-cooled single.Chippy Wood The clutch lever is featherlight, and with a slight touch on the gear selector, we’re away into the countryside. The first few miles are slow and steady as we negotiate picturesque Cotswold villages and serve to highlight the 400′s sheer rider-friendliness. The fueling is accurate and smooth for a potentially lumpy single, and well suited to newer riders, and the bike, which tops the scales at 375 pounds with fuel, is effortless to ride at slow speeds. There’s a natural balance nervous newbies will love, along with comfortable widish bars and that low seat. For reference, I’m only 5-foot-6 and easily had both feet flat on the asphalt at a standstill. On more-open roads, there was an expectation to be dancing up and down on the gear selector, chasing revs for maximum power, but surprisingly this wasn’t necessary. OK, the Speed 400 is no power-spitting superbike, but between 4,000 rpm and 6,000 rpm, response is pleasingly crisp. There’s enough torque, too, to drive from 30 mph in fifth gear up to the UK’s 60 mph national speed limit and stay comfortably ahead of the traffic. 2024 Triumph Speed 400 riding on country road A torquey character allows the Speed 400 to handle all the rigors of highway usage with ease.Chippy Wood At times you could easily forget you’re on a small-capacity machine as the midrange feels more comparable to a larger single. UK roads are reasonably quick, and overtaking faster cars safely requires good acceleration between 50 mph and 70 mph, which is exactly where the Speed 400 excels. It’s perky rather than punchy but has enough to make efficient and entertaining progress. You can rev on from its natural habitat of 5,000 rpm to 8,000 rpm but power drops off after that. There’s power for an indicated 100 mph top speed and enough torque for making safe overtakes—a solid achievement for a small single. Even on a UK motorway the 400 held its own and remained comfortable cruising at the legal limit of 70 mph. At 80 mph the single becomes a little vibey, and once above 90 mph hills and headwinds become your enemies. But out there in the real world it’s rarely outrun by traffic. That motor should prove frugal on gasoline too; but we will gather the numbers on a future and longer test. 2024 Triumph Speed 400 accelerating on country road Triumph fitted the Triumph Speed 400 with Metzeler Sportec M9 RR tires.Chippy Wood As mentioned, we only got a flavor of what the Speed 400 can do (there’s a more extensive press test later in the year), but the mixture of A and B roads did offer some challenging and enjoyable riding. Suspension setup is relatively simple, with a 43mm nonadjustable Big Piston inverted fork carrying 5.5 inches of travel and a single rear shock with preload adjustment and 5.1 inches of travel. Surprisingly, perhaps, Triumph has opted for a single shock rather than the retro twin-shock seen on the larger Speed Twin range. The ride is focused on comfort, and while the 400 is agile and has relatively light steering, it remains stable under most conditions despite a short wheelbase of 54.2 inches. The Speed 400 is there to be enjoyed, and you can have a spirited ride when the roads get a bit more serious. Even when you up the pace, the chassis remains composed and predictable.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66291108 Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal have permission to speak to Kylian Mbappe after making a world record £259m bid for the Paris St-Germain forward. The 24-year-old France captain, who has a year left on his contract, has refused to sign an extension at the French champions and was not selected for their pre-season tour to Japan. PSG want to sell Mbappe now rather than see him leave for free next summer. Neymar's £200m move from Barcelona to PSG in 2017 is the current record. Which players have joined Saudi teams this summer? PSG activated Brazil forward Neymar's release clause to make him the most expensive player in the world. Should he move, Mbappe will have commanded two of the three highest fees paid for a player after joining PSG from Monaco for £166m in 2017. Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Barcelona have all expressed an interest in Mbappe, who has previously said he intends to leave PSG for free at the end of next season and is believed to prefer a move to Real Madrid. PSG are open to the idea of Mbappe leaving on loan this summer to see out the final year of his contract elsewhere. This would allow him to join Real Madrid for nothing in 12 months' time, keep playing this season and generate a loan fee for PSG. Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi has made clear his determination to take a tough stance and there have been suggestions Mbappe would not be selected for an entire year if he refused to break the present impasse. That eventuality would clearly have a negative impact on his hopes of playing for France at Euro 2024. Al-Hilal are one of the clubs owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. They have already signed Ruben Neves from Wolves and Kalidou Koulibaly from Chelsea this summer. Timeline of events May 2022: Mbappe signs lucrative two-year deal with the option of a further year to stay at PSG, turning down a move to Real Madrid. December 2022: Scores hat-trick but France beaten on penalties in World Cup final by Argentina. March 2023: Named captain of France, replacing the retired Hugo Lloris. April 2023: Wins sixth Ligue 1 title of career and fifth with PSG. 13 June 2023: Mbappe tweets he wants to stay at PSG for now but will not extend his contract beyond 2024. 5 July 2023: Told by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi he must sign a new contract if he wants to stay. 9 July 2023: Calls PSG a "divisive" club in comments made to France Football magazine. 21 July 2023: Left out of PSG squad for pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea. 22 July 2023: French footballers' union says it could take legal action after accusing PSG of "moral harassment" for leaving Mbappe out of pre-season tour squad. 24 July 2023: Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal make world record £259m bid for Mbappe.

https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/barbie-movie-debut-shines-even-brighter-final-tally-rises-2023-07-24/ LOS ANGELES, July 24 (Reuters) - Barbie's record-breaking debut at cinemas over the weekend landed higher than initial estimates with $162 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada, distributor Warner Bros said (WBD.O) on Monday. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-66258416 Israeli MPs have passed into law a highly controversial bill despite mass protests which aimed to thwart it. The law removes the power of the Supreme Court to overrule government actions it considers unreasonable. It is the first to be approved in a series of bitterly contested reforms aimed at curbing the power of courts. The planned reforms have triggered some of the biggest protests in Israel's history, with opponents warning they imperil Israel as a democracy. The government argues that the measures are necessary to correct an imbalance in power which has seen the courts increasingly intervene in political decisions in recent decades. The so-called "reasonableness" bill was approved by 64 votes to 0, after the opposition boycotted the final vote. In remarks to the Knesset (parliament), opposition leader Yair Lapid called the step "a takeover by an extreme minority over the Israeli majority". But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted the court would remain independent. He said the bill was necessary for the government to "carry out policy in line with the decision of the majority of the citizens of the country". The vote brings to a head months of turmoil, with Israel's president warning political leaders on Monday that the country was "in a state of national emergency". On Monday morning protesters blocking a boulevard outside the Knesset were sprayed with water cannon and pulled off the road by police amid a cacophony of noise from drums, whistles and air horns. One protester was hurt, local media say, and six were arrested, police said. Other protesters surrounded a police van shouting "shame" at officers. A demonstrator lying in the street told the BBC he was was defying "dictatorship", adding that his grandfather had been a wartime codebreaker against the Nazis at the UK's famous Bletchley Park. Asked how long he would stay put he said: "We will never surrender". What is the crisis about? Another, Reut Yifat Uziel, the daughter of a paratrooper pictured in an iconic Israeli photograph of the capture of the Western Wall in the 1967 Middle East war, said she feared for her children's future. "Netanyahu kidnapped the country and I am worried it will become a theocracy," she said. Reut Yifat Uziel Image caption, Reut Yifat Uziel said she feared for her children's future The protesters - tens of thousands of whom marched some 45 miles (70km) from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem at the end of last week - set up camp in a park between the Knesset and the Supreme Court, which are located almost next to each other. Prime Minister Netanyahu was in parliament for the vote hours after being discharged from hospital following unscheduled surgery for a pacemaker on Saturday. The controversial reforms have polarised Israel, triggering one of the most serious domestic crises in the country's history. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets weekly since the start of the year in protest at what they say is an attack on democracy. The government says the reforms serve to strengthen democracy, arguing the Supreme Court has accrued too much power over politics in recent decades. Deepening the crisis, thousands of reservists, including pilots in the air force crucial to Israel's offensive and defensive capabilities, have vowed not to volunteer for service. Such unprecedented dissent has caused alarm over the potential impact on Israel's military readiness. Former heads of Israel's security services, chief justices, and prominent legal and business figures have also been vocal against the government's reforms. The measures have also been criticised by the US President Joe Biden, who in his most explicit comments yet called for the "divisive" reforms to be postponed.

https://techxplore.com/news/2023-07-software-track-small-pixel.html Sandia National Laboratories’ Multi-frame Moving Object Detection System makes it possible for remote sensors to detect small moving objects that would normally be unseeable to both sensors and human eyes. Credit: Eric Lundin Remember what it's like to twirl a sparkler on a summer night? Hold it still and the fire crackles and sparks but twirl it around and the light blurs into a line tracing each whirl and jag you make. A new patented software system developed at Sandia National Laboratories can find the curves of motion in streaming video and images from satellites, drones and far-range security cameras and turn them into signals to find and track moving objects as small as one pixel. The developers say this system can enhance the performance of any remote sensing application. "Being able to track each pixel from a distance matters, and it is an ongoing and challenging problem," said Tian Ma, a computer scientist and co-developer of the system. "For physical security surveillance systems, for example, the farther out you can detect a possible threat, the more time you have to prepare and respond. Often the biggest challenge is the simple fact that when objects are located far away from the sensors, their size naturally appears to be much smaller. Sensor sensitivity diminishes as the distance from the target increases." Ma and Robert Anderson started working on the Multi-frame Moving Object Detection System in 2015 as a Sandia Laboratory Directed Research and Development project. A paper about MMODS was recently published in Sensors. Detecting one moving pixel in a sea of 10 million The ability to detect objects through remote sensing systems is typically limited to what can be seen in a single video frame, whereas MMODS uses a new, multiframe method to detect small objects in low visibility conditions, Ma said. At a computer station, image streams from various sensors flow in, and MMODS processes the data with an image filter frame by frame in real time. An algorithm finds movement in the video frames and matches it into target signals that can be correlated and then integrated across a set of video frame sequences. This process improves the signal-to-noise ratio or overall image quality because the moving target's signal can be correlated over time and increases steadily, whereas movement from background noise like wind is filtered out because it moves randomly and is not correlated. Before MMODS was deployed for remote sensing enhancement, Ma and Anderson demonstrated its effectiveness on simulated data with target objects as small as one pixel with a signal-to-noise ratio close to 1:1, meaning there is no distinction between signal and noise. These objects would normally be undetectable to both human eyes and sensors. The baseline detector system achieved a 30% chance of detecting a moving object. When MMODS was added to that system, it had a 90% chance of detection without increasing the rate of false alarms. In another demonstration, the researchers used MMODS to detect moving objects from live data collected with a remote camera at the peak of Sandia Mountain. Without prior knowledge of Albuquerque's roads, MMODS detected vehicles moving throughout the city. "Given that a modern video camera has about 10 million pixels, being able to detect and track one pixel at a time is a major advance in computer vision technology," Ma said. "MMODS has been proven to improve modern detection sensitivity by 200 to 500% and works for fast- and slow-moving objects, even in poor visibility conditions."

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/zenbleed-bug-allows-data-theft-from-amds-zen-2-processors-patches-released AMD hasn't given specific details of any performance impacts but did issue the following statement to Tom's Hardware: “Any performance impact will vary depending on workload and system configuration. AMD is not aware of any known exploit of the described vulnerability outside the research environment.” AMD's statement implies there will be some performance impact from the patches, but we'll have to conduct independent benchmarks when the patches arrive for the consumer Ryzen products. In the meantime, we've asked AMD for any ballpark figures it can share. The Zenbleed vulnerability is filed as CVE-2023-20593 and allows data exfiltration (theft) at a rate of 30kb per core, per second, thus providing adequate throughput to steal sensitive information flowing through the processor. This attack works across all software running on the processor, including virtual machines, sandboxes, containers, and processes. The ability for this attack to read data across virtual machines is particularly threatening for cloud service providers and those who use cloud instances. The attack can be accomplished via unprivileged arbitrary code execution. Ormandy has posted a security research repository and code for the exploit. The attack works by mani[CENSORED]ting the register files to force a mispredicted command (meaning it eploits the speculative execution engine), as described below: "The bug works like this, first of all you need to trigger something called the XMM Register Merge Optimization2, followed by a register rename and a mispredicted vzeroupper. This all has to happen within a precise window to work. We now know that basic operations like strlen, memcpy and strcmp will use the vector registers - so we can effectively spy on those operations happening anywhere on the system! It doesn’t matter if they’re happening in other virtual machines, sandboxes, containers, processes, whatever! This works because the register file is shared by everything on the same physical core. In fact, two hyperthreads even share the same physical register file," says Ormandy. AMD describes the exploit much more simply, saying, "Under specific microarchitectural circumstances, a register in “Zen 2” CPUs may not be written to 0 correctly. This may cause data from another process and/or thread to be stored in the YMM register, which may allow an attacker to potentially access sensitive information." Ormandy says the bug can be patched through a software approach for multiple operating systems (e.g., Windows -"you can set the chicken bit DE_CFG[9]"), but this might result in a performance penalty. Ormandy says it is highly recommended to get the microcode update, but his post also has examples of software mitigations for other operating systems, too. Here's a list of the impacted processors, and the schedule for the release of the AGESA versions to OEMs: Below, we have a more detailed list with the model number of each impacted chip and the expected data for the new AGESA to arrive. AMD's AGESA is a code foundation upon which the OEMs build BIOS revisions. You will need to update to a BIOS with the above-listed AGESA code, or newer, to patch your system. “We are aware of the AMD hardware security vulnerability described in CVE-2023-20593, which was discovered by Tavis Ormandy, a Security Researcher at Google, and we have worked with AMD and industry partners closely. We have worked to address the vulnerability across Google platforms.” - Google spokesperson to Tom's Hardware. Ormandy says he reported the issue to AMD on May 15, 2023, but it still remains unclear if this was a coordinated disclosure — AMD didn't seem prepared for the announcement. Ormandy also credits his colleagues; "I couldn’t have found it without help from my colleagues, in particular Eduardo Vela Nava and Alexandra Sandulescu. I also had help analyzing the bug from Josh Eads."

https://www.pcgamer.com/larian-ceos-advice-about-origin-characters-has-thrown-my-baldurs-gate-3-playthrough-plans-into-disarray/ From my very first hands-off preview of Baldur's Gate 3, I knew I was going to pick Astarion for my first playthrough. Like Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldur's Gate 3 not only lets you design a custom character, it also gives you a selection of origin characters with predefined histories and unique hooks, who otherwise serve as companions. It's one of the things I adored about Original Sin 2, and a system I was eager to see return. Astarion caught my eye because he's a sexy vampire spawn with quick wits, sharp fangs and a compulsion to drink the blood of his pals. Tragedy, sarcasm, blood—what more does one need? I also hoped this would allow me to sidestep the hours spent in the character creator. No more agonising decisions for me! But now Larian CEO Swen Vincke has thrown a spanner in the works and I'm second guessing myself. Vincke was chatting to the lads on Dropped Frames about origin characters, you see, and he had some advice for players: "We add these origin characters for replay value," he said. "I would always pick a custom, and discover my companions. I think the origins come into play when you replay it. That said, there's nothing wrong with picking an origin, it's just that the entire origin system is about where do you put the camera? In whose head do you put the camera?" He thinks it works better if you meet these characters as companions first, see how they react to things, learn their secrets, and then play them in a future playthrough to see things from a different perspective. "They work better if you've played the game already once because then you see it through their eyes. What was Shadowheart thinking the first time she saw you? And now you know when you're in their head." It's an annoyingly good point that's making me reconsider my plans. I fully expect to play Baldur's Gate 3 more than once, but I suspect a lot of players will decide that they don't have the time to replay an RPG where the critical path alone will take 80+ hours to finish. In that case, it seems like an origin character would be the best choice, allowing you to experience things you wouldn't be able to with a regular custom character. I could of course utterly ignore Vincke's advice and stick with my original choice. But I also love the idea of having someone as a companion and then getting to know them even better by playing them at a later stage. And custom characters offer a bit more flexibility at the cost of those unique origin hooks, like being a bloodsucker or listening to a creepy voice in your head. And we'll still be able to experience some of this if we recruit them as companions. Shit, I'm really torn here. This is too much for a Monday.

said it would be an "abdication" of responsibility if ministers "play politics" with environmental policies. Mr Skidmore, the Conservative MP for Kingswood, said: "The net zero review I chaired demonstrated that net zero isn't just an environmental policy, but a key economic driver of future growth and investment that can transform Britain for the better, but this requires all political parties not to play politics with safeguarding our futures." He urged politicians to prioritise "the lives and health of the public and the opportunity for economic growth" ahead of "gamesmanship". "It is also really bad politics, given that the environment and taking action on climate change consistently polls third in the issues that voters care about," he added. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-66277211

Many of the Phoenix Zoo’s 3,000 animals are used to hot weather. Still, with the city reaching a record 21 consecutive days of temperatures at 110 F or higher, zookeepers are having to get creative. That means everything from fans and misters to frozen treats like ice pops for most animals and blood-sicles — frozen blood refreshments — for the carnivores, said Drew Foster, the zoo’s director of living collections. “Even when it is incredibly hot, the staff still has to be here to take care of animals,” Foster said. “Instead of closing the zoo, we give animals access to climate-controlled areas and give them the care they need.” Millions of Americans are in the midst of a multiweek heat wave, with record-breaking temperatures being recorded from the desert Southwest to Florida. Animals are just as susceptible to the heat as people, and the National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings across the U.S., urging those in the heat wave’s path to stay hydrated, wear appropriate clothing and stay indoors when possible. "Elvis" a Galapagos Tortoise is cooled off with water in Phoenix "Elvis," a Galapagos tortoise, is cooled off with water in Phoenix on Wednesday. Patrick T. Fallon / AFP - Getty Images Zookeepers are particularly sensitive to these challenges, often having to care for a wide variety of animals with varying needs. Phoenix zookeepers set careful temperature parameters and tailor heat plans for all animals under their care, Foster said. The horned rhinos, elephants and tortoises love water showers, while many of the big cats prefer a gentle misting. Zookeepers carefully monitor animals for signs of heat stress, such as panting. Given the extreme heat, the Phoenix Zoo has also shifted its hours from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., opting to welcome visitors during the coolest parts of the day and closing certain enclosures when necessary. The zoo has, however, stopped short of completely closing. At the Houston Zoo, where temperatures continue to skirt 100° F, staff has maintained its opening hours. Most of the zoo’s animals come from warmer climates, but zookeepers are keeping a close eye on those that are less tolerant of heat — feeding the sea lions cold gelatin and ice and providing apes, monkeys and gorillas with climate-controlled rooms and shower pools. “One of our gorillas in particular loves the shower pool. It kind of looks like a person sitting in a hot tub,” said Kevin Hodge, the zoo’s vice president. “It’s really cute.” Many zoos are coping with how to adapt to a much hotter future, as global warming continues to affect the frequency and duration of heat waves. One analysis found that climate change has made extreme heat five times more likely in the Southwest. https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/blood-sicles-misters-zookeepers-look-keep-animals-cool-oppressive-heat-rcna95290

The Open: Brian Harman leads by five at Royal Liverpool as Jon Rahm posts record scoreRahm's mood was in complete contrast to Rory McIlroy, who opted to skip speaking to the media and head to the putting green after missing seven birdie attempts of 17 feet or less. The Northern Irishman birdied three of his first five holes and missed birdie chances on the other two. And that proved the story of his round as he posted a two-under-par 69. It is his best round of the week and improves his score to three under but his quest to add to his four majors will drift into a 10th year. Fleetwood's challenge also appears to be over. A birdie at the second, coupled with Harman's opening bogey, briefly brought him to within three but it would prove to be his only one of the day, a solitary dropped shot on the 10th cancelling that out. At seven back, he knows he has experience of shooting low in the final round of a major, having twice carded 63 in the US Open - last month in Los Angeles and also finishing runner-up by one shot to Brooks Koepka in 2018. "Having Sundays and low rounds to draw on is always something positive," he said. "I would probably take that now and see if Brian beats it." England's Alex Fitzpatrick will have the family bragging rights at the dinner table this evening after three birdies in his 65 lifted him to four under, two better than his older brother and 2022 US Open champion Matt, who posted a 67. And Matthew Jordan's fairytale home Open continued. The 27-year-old, who hit his first chip at Royal Liverpool at the age of three and followed his dad and grandad in becoming a member at the age of seven, birdied four of his final five holes for a 69 and three under total.

"The situation in Rhodes is serious and extremely difficult. Due to the strong wind and quickly changing direction of the fire, firefighters had to withdraw and move," Slovak Fire and Rescue Services posted on Facebook. Greece is facing further intense heat this weekend, with meteorologists warning that temperatures could climb to as high as 45C (113F). It could turn into Greece's hottest July weekend in 50 years, one of the country's top meteorologists has said. Firefighters are continuing to battle dozens of wildfires across the country. An area west of Athens is among the worst-hit areas, along with Laconia in the southern Peloponnese and the island of Rhodes. And authorities are warning of a very high risk of new blazes as the heat continues to rise. People have been advised to stay home, and tourist sites - including Athens' ancient Acropolis - will be shut during the hottest parts of the next two days. Greece - like a number of other European countries - saw a prolonged spell of extreme heat earlier this month. The latest heatwave comes at one of the busiest times for the country's tourism industry. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66279520
