  2. Last year was all about the upgradation when we talked about technology- as we witnessed so many smartphones, VR headsets and generative AI making advancements across the world. In 2024, experts have stated that consumer tech companies will be upgrading in every way and making the best out of technology. Here are a few of the expected devices which will be launched this year (based on the anticipation and research):Vivo is set to unleash its flagship X100 devices on January 4, which will include two variants- Vivo X100 and Vivo X100 Pro. The handset will be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset and smartphones will be equipped with optical improvements when compared to the predecessor X90 series. Asus ROG Phone 8 and Phone 8 Pro The game-centric smartphone from Asus is expected to launch on January 9. The new ROG Phone 8 and Phone 8 Pro will come equipped with the essence of ROG laptops for bringing a gaming-centric smartphone. Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Samsung Galaxy S24 series will be launched this year, and the tech giant will launch the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra this year. Also, Samsung has further anticipated introducing smartphones with more AI-driven capabilities and the sixth generation of foldable phones in 2024. Apple iPhone 16 series and iPhone SE 4 2023 was all about the iPhone 15, and Apple is said to launch the iPhone 16 series this year, along with the iPhone SE 4. The iPhone SE 4 is said to launch in March 2024, which will be offering a toned-down version of the flagship iPhone models. Later in September, the iPhone 16 series is expected, to bring further tweaks and innovations. Google Pixel Phones with enhanced AI features Google is also in the race and we are expecting the new and upgraded Pixel smartphone to launch this year, which will stand tall to compete with the next generation of Pixel phones. These devices are anticipated to integrate advanced AI features when compared to the current Pixel lineup. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R and Nord series The company is all set to launch the upcoming OnePlus 12 on January 23, which will be accompanied by the OnePlus 12R. The new handset aims to strengthen its Hasselblad partnership. The company, on the other hand, will launch several Nord series throughout the year. https://www.indiatvnews.com/technology/news/most-anticipated-gadgets-set-to-launch-in-2024-2024-01-02-909989
  3. Earlier this week, Garmin pushed new stable updates to the Forerunner series smartwatches, such as the Forerunner 965 and the older Forerunner 255. However, it appears that the company has not finalised equivalent updates for its more expensive smartwatches like the Epix 2 and Fenix 7. Instead, Garmin has published Beta Version 16.20, which follows Beta Version 16.18 that the company released in late February. As with Beta Version 16.18, Beta Version 16.20 is limited to non-Pro smartwatches for the time being. With that being said, Garmin eventually offered up Beta Version 16.18 to the likes of the Epix 2 Pro and Fenix 7 Pro, albeit silently. Incidentally, Garmin's forum post notes that Beta Version 16.20 enables ECG functionality on Epix Pro and Fenix 7 Pro models. Thus, there is no reason to suggest that anything different will occur with Beta Version 16.20. Please note that this week's update for the Fenix 7 series is a regular beta update and not a Release Candidate. Consequently, there will be at least one more update before a successor to Software Version 15.77 rolls out to Garmin's stable software channel. According to the company's forum post, Beta Version 16.20 ships with the following changes from Beta Version 16.18: Fixed issue when using the resume later feature during a track run. Fixed potential issue causing shutdowns when using heart rate in Connect IQ. Fixed potential issues when configuring map layer toggles when subscribed to Outdoor Maps+. Fixed potential shutdown when requesting weather data. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Flagship-Garmin-smartwatches-gain-new-improvements-through-latest-software-update.810937.0.html
  4. We know that Thunderbolt’s next major iteration, Thunderbolt 5, will debut sometime in 2024. Two vendors, J5create and Hyper, showed off their first hardware at CES 2024. But there are two big questions: When will you actually get it and how much will it cost you? The answer? It depends. Both J5 and Hyper representatives told PCWorld that they received their prototype hardware just Sunday, and a J5 representative said he was optimistic that his company’s first product would ship in March. Others weren’t so sure. Thunderbolt is the more powerful I/O alternative to the generic USB-C connection found within most laptops. Though a 10Gbps USB-C connection can be used to drive a USB-C hub or dongle to add ports to your laptop, the 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3/4 connection allows for multiple high-speed displays via a Thunderbolt dock. Thunderbolt 5 doubles that throughput to 80Gbps, and in some cases offers a one-way connection that can hit 120Gpbs. That will allow consumers to add one or more high-speed displays to their laptop. Thunderbolt 4 allowed you to connect two 4K displays, at 60Hz. Thunderbolt 5 increases that to support three 4K displays, at 144Hz each. The problem is that Thunderbolt requires both device support as well as in your laptop or desktop PC. Intel has said previously that Thunderbolt 5 will be supported in its 2024 product lineup, but as a discrete chip: That means that laptop OEMs will pay more to add Thunderbolt 5 to their laptops, and, by extension, so will you. It will also likely sap a bit of power from your laptop’s battery. We still don’t know when either the Thunderbolt host controller or the device controller will ship. But with the first Thunderbolt controllers already in prototype hardware, we can be optimistic. The first Thunderbolt 5 docks, revealed J5create, also known as J5, showed off the Thunderbolt 5 Dual 8K60 Display Dock at the CES Unveiled show on Sunday night. It will be priced at $499, a representative said, and likely available for consumers to buy in March. (After publication, a company representative later said it would be available to buy “later this year.”) It’s not quite clear what the specific features of the J5 device will be, but it appears that it will lean into the existing Mac market for Thunderbolt displays as well as the emerging USB-C/Thunderbolt monitor market for Windows devices. It has two Thunderbolt 5 ports on the front, a microSD/SD card slot, a mic/speaker jack, and a 10Gbps USB-A port. On the back, there’s a power input, a 2.5Gbps Ethernet jack, two USB-A ports (5Gbps and 10Gbps), and a third Thunderbolt 5 upstream port, combined with the downstream connection to your PC. It’s worth noting that Thunderbolt 5 does allow for up to 240W downstream charging to your laptop, but J5 plans to support 140W charging instead. Hyper, the more consumer-focused imprint of Targus, also revealed the Hyper TB5 Dock, which it plans to sell for $399, a representative said. Hyper’s TB5 dock looks similar. There, Hyper’s TB5 Dock offers both a microSD card and SD card slot, alongside two upstream Thunderbolt 5 ports. There’s also a 10Gbps USB-A port and a mic/headphone jack. On the rear, this triple display dock offers two DisplayPort ports and an HDMI port, the specifications of which weren’t clear. There is also an Ethernet connection. On the rear, there is a pair of USB 3.2 Type A ports (at 10Gbps apiece) as well as a Thunderbolt 5 port. And there was a hidden surprise in both docks, too: a small foldout port for an M.2 SSD card, making them Thunderbolt dock enclosures, as well. Bernie Thompson, the chief technical officer of dock maker Plugable Technologies, told PCWorld that he expects Thunderbolt 5 hardware to be available “towards the end of the year.” Plugable launched the TBT4-UD5 Monday at CES 2024, which he said could be one of the company’s last Thunderbolt 4 docks. The TBT4-UD5, priced at $199, pairs two HDMI ports with a downstream Thunderbolt 4 port, a 10GBps USB-C port, four USB-A ports (two at 10Gbps, and two at 5Gbps), microSD/SD card readers, and a 3.5mm jack. It delivers 96W downstream to your notebook. Plugable’s Thompson said that it’s pretty clear that HDMI has won out as the I/O connection interface of choice, though noting that it’s the embedded DisplayPort protocol that actually is the Thunderbolt transfer medium. This story was updated on Feb. 20 with updated information. https://www.pcworld.com/article/2195198/first-thunderbolt-5-hardware-revealed-at-ces-when-will-you-get-it.html
  5. On an average day about a dozen new games are released on Steam. And while we think that's a good thing, it can be understandably hard to keep up with. Potentially exciting gems are sure to be lost in the deluge of new things to play unless you sort through every single game that is released on Steam. So that’s exactly what we’ve done. If nothing catches your fancy this week, we've gathered the best PC games you can play right now and a running list of the 2024 games that are launching this year. Release:‌ February 8 Developer:‌ FUTU Studio Here's a moody and meditative visual novel set in Shanghai at the beginning of the 21st century. Protagonist Baichuan receives a note from long-estranged ex-girlfriend Qiuyu, which prompts a melancholy reassessment of not only Baichuan's life, but the lives of his closest friends. Poised between aching nostalgia and the search for optimism, Shanghai Dreaming is elevated by its gorgeously detailed anime art style, and will probably appeal to fans of Life is Strange. As the name implies, Pixel Noir is a crime noir adventure with pixel art graphics. Set in seedy Pinnacle City and explored from an isometric perspective, the protagonist is a disgraced former cop who is now "the cheapest Private Eye" in the business, which suggests he's probably pretty dodgy. Or, it suggests he's not averse to taking up some pretty trifling tasks, like searching for missing pets. He will get his hands messy though because there's turn-based combat, which pits you and your miscreant crew against the thugs of Pinnacle City. Pixel art and noir don't seem like the best fit but this looks great. Release:‌ February 7 Developers:‌ iFAction Studio River Town Factory exited Early Access into 1.0 last week, and it's an interesting hybrid of cosy game, RPG and automation sim. I like the premise: after a meteorite disaster, the player-character is transported a thousand years into the past with all the knowledge of the modern world intact. That means you can show those antiquated bozos how to build some pretty crazy stuff. Don't expect to pull that off without the usual fishing around for resources, which is where the combat and RPG elements come into play. It looks like iFAction Studio has thrown everything into the pot with this one; there are even mechs. You could probably sink hundreds of hours into it. Release:‌ February 7 Developer:‌ Mango Protocol Here's a grim point 'n' click adventure the developers describe as a "puzzlevania". The protagonist is a weird worse-for-wear doll who finds a notebook with "CLeM" emblazoned on the cover. It's a bizarre and cryptic book, vaguely reminiscent of Codex Seraphinianus, or the Voynich Manuscript, and you'll need to do a lot of exploration and puzzle solving to get to the bottom of it. If you're keen to give it a shot there's a free prologue chapter. Release:‌ February 7 Developer:‌ MrSuicideSheep This free platformer comes courtesy of electronic musician SuicideSheep, who has a pretty big following on YouTube. I'm not sure if the resulting po[CENSORED]rity of this platformer is because of that already big fanbase or just because it's good, but it does at least look good, with an ornate art style that reminds me of Rain World by way of Ori. It does look very atmospheric, and it's free, so if you have a spare hour or so there's not much at stake. Shaun Prescott is the Australian editor of PC Gamer. 13. he IRS has launched its Free File program for the 2024 tax season — with its largest-ever expansion to eligibility. Now, anyone who earned an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $79,000 or less in 2023 can access guided tax prep that'll help them file their federal taxes online for free. The new income cap is $6,000 higher than last year’s $73,000, and, according to an analysis by Money, marks the largest annual increase in the program’s 22-year history. Typically, the IRS adjusts the income limit by roughly $1,000 to $2,000 in any given year, if it changes the limit at all. The previous two tax seasons, for example, the IRS held the Free File income threshold steady at $73,000. Given the historic increase to the program's income threshold, many more Americans are expected to qualify for free online tax filing. If you have an AGI higher than $79,000, you can still use IRS Free File, too. You just won’t qualify to use free guided tax software through the IRS’s tax prep partners listed above. Instead, you’ll need to use the IRS’s fillable forms tool to manually complete your tax return. IRS Free File remains underutilized The IRS’s best-kept secret just might be its free e-filing program. According to the Free File Alliance (FFA), a nonprofit coalition of the IRS’s tax software partners, about 70% of taxpayers — accounting for some 100 million Americans — qualify. The alliance was forged in 2002 between the IRS and private tax prep corporations on the understanding that the IRS would not create its own free tax-filing software (read: not directly compete with them) so long as the tax companies agreed to offer free guided tax prep and e-filing for low-to-middle income taxpayers. But each year, only a small portion of Americans take advantage of this program and instead rely on paid versions of tax software or hire tax professionals directly — often unwittingly throwing away precious money in the process. According to tax officials, Americans spent about $150 and nine hours filing their taxes in 2023. The latest figures from the FFA estimate that 3 million Americans used IRS Free File last year. Given that over 162 million taxpayers filed in 2023, that suggests less than 2% of all taxpayers filed their taxes online through Free File. How to use IRS Free File Be sure to gather your necessary paperwork before beginning, especially your income statements like W2s and 1099s. If your AGI — defined as your total income minus any eligible deductions or adjustments — is close to the cutoff, you may want to check Line 11 of last year’s Form 1040 as a guide. To use IRS Free File tax software, first choose one of the eight IRS partners based on your eligibility using the IRS’s website. While the overall AGI threshold is $79,000, certain partners may choose to set stricter criteria based on age, income or location. Not all partners offer free state income tax filing assistance. Once you choose the right provider, simply follow the guided prompts. If you have an AGI above that amount, you can complete your federal taxes using the IRS’s Free File Fillable Forms. Read the instructions carefully, as this tool requires a lot more manual input and is only capable of basic calculations. State tax forms aren’t available through this tool. Once you’ve manually completed your federal tax return, you should print it for your records. To file, sign your return and either mail it to the IRS or submit it online. Don't forget to separately file your state taxes where required. 15. We're well on our way through the first chunk of new games in 2024, and hey, is it just me, or are there already too many games to keep up with? After an inarguably huge year for games, it's possible that the 2024 schedule will wind up feeling a little quieter—but the first couple months have already been stacked with celebrated releases. January saw the all-encompassing arrival of Palworld, while February brought a pile of surprise hits like Helldivers 2, Balatro, and Pacific Drive We're in store for some anticipated sequels like Dragon's Dogma 2, Homeworld 3, and World of Goo 2. There are still-to-come indies definitely worth watching as well, such as little builder Tiny Glade, witchy adventure Reka, and magical-girl inspired life sim Field of Mistria. And Hollow Knight: Silksong has to make it out in 2024. Right?Keep up with the launch calendar for the year here as new release dates land, inevitable delays crop up, and new announcements hit the books. https://www.pcgamer.com/new-games-2024-upcoming-pc-releases/
  16. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi announced that the Ras El-Hekma project will become the largest tourism project on the Mediterranean in the next few years. He said that the Egyptian state is committed to communicating clearly, honestly and transparently with the people about any new project. He made these remarks during the fifth edition of the “Able with Difference” celebration, which honours the people with disabilities. He said that the project will include an international city that offers services and activities throughout the year, some of which are unprecedented in Egypt. He also revealed that the funds for the project, which were previously announced by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, have arrived and been deposited to the Central Bank. He added that the state will explain the details of the amounts received soon. Al-Sisi expressed his gratitude to the UAE for their support, saying: “It is not easy for someone to put $35 billion in two months. There is nothing like that in the world. This is a clear form of support.” He also noted that every event, problem or crisis that happens anywhere in the world affects Egypt. During the celebration, Al-Sisi instructed the government to allocate EGP 10 billion to the “Able with Difference” fund. Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, Al-Sisi emphasized Egypt’s efforts to ease the suffering of the people in Gaza as much as possible. He said: “In times of conflict, there are many statements, some of which are true and others are not true, but from the first day we have been keen to make the Rafah crossing a lifeline and a way to provide aid and relief to those who need it.” He added: “Egypt never closed the crossing, but in order to provide assistance in situations of conflict, we must be careful that no problem will occur while we are doing this.” President Al-Sisi also expressed his hope that a ceasefire would be achieved soon, so that real relief would start for the people in Gaza. He added: “I had to affirm our continued support and we will keep supporting and aiding the Palestinian cause until we reach a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.” https://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2024/02/28/egypts-ras-el-hekma-to-be-largest-tourism-project-on-mediterranean-al-sisi/
  17. In the pantheon of ancient Egyptian gods, Thoth, the deity of wisdom and learning, held a unique connection with the animal kingdom. His association with the hamadryas baboon not only underscores the religious complexity of the time but also presents a puzzle that has long perplexed historians and biologists alike: the journey of baboons to Egypt. Researchers recently unraveled this mystery, nestled at the intersection of biology, anthropology, and Egyptology. The findings shed light on early globalization, human-wildlife interactions, and the cultural significance of these sacred animals. Sacred baboons of Egypt and Thoth Historical records well-document the ancient Egyptians’ veneration of animals. Various deities portray creatures that were, in many cases, foreign to the Nile Valley. Thoth, revered for his knowledge, often appeared in the form of a hamadryas baboon, a species not native to Egypt. Ancient Egyptians imported, mummified, and offered these baboons as votive tokens. They served as a tangible link between the po[CENSORED]ce and their gods. However, the origins of these sacred animals, how they were transported to Egypt, and the reasons for their divine status have been subjects of scholarly debate for years. Tracing the origins Biologist Gisela Kopp’s intriguing research took on these enigmatic questions. The study is emblematic of interdisciplinary collaboration. It brought together biologists, anthropologists, and Egyptologists in a collective effort to trace the geographic origins of mummified baboons found in Egypt. Employing advanced genetic analysis techniques, Kopp and her team examined the mitochondrial genomes of the baboon mummies. She compared them with contemporary samples from various regions in Africa. This extensive comparison, facilitated by the consistent genetic variance among baboon po[CENSORED]tions over time, enabled researchers to pinpoint the baboons’ original habitat. Unearthing historical trade routes Anthropologist Nathaniel Dominy contributed earlier research using stable isotopes to trace the baboons’ geography. The combined insights from genetic analysis and chemical signatures led the team to an astonishing discovery. The baboons were native to the Horn of Africa, specifically a region within modern-day Eritrea. This finding resonates with historical accounts of the ancient port of Adulis. This po[CENSORED]r destination gained its reputation from flourishing trade in luxury goods and rare animals, including baboons. The revelation gains significance against the backdrop of Punt, a legendary land referenced in ancient Egyptian texts as a source of precious commodities. The precise location of Punt has eluded historians. However, its importance as a possible lynchpin in early global maritime trade networks is undebatable. Gisela Kopp’s research intriguingly suggests that Punt and Adulis could represent the same geographical location. It was simply known by different names across eras. The convergence of biological data with historical analysis provided the key to linking these two places. Baboons, Egypt, and cultural context The representation of baboons in Egyptian lore, exclusive to the region, raises compelling cultural questions. They are considered pests in societies where they naturally occur due to their crop-damaging behavior. In ancient Egypt, however, these animals were revered and symbolically linked to the divine. The reasons behind this cultural dichotomy remain speculative. However, the practice of mass mummification of baboons highlights the sophisticated interaction between humans and wildlife during that period. It also points to a complex coexistence that extended beyond domestication. Ancient DNA offers new avenues Remarkably, Kopp’s research marks a pioneering venture in the field of biology. It represents the first successful analysis of ancient DNA extracted from mummified non-human primates. This achievement paves the way for new studies into the historical dynamics of human-wildlife engagement, genetic diversity, and disease transmission patterns. The interactions of ancient Egyptians with rare animals, evidenced through mummification, underscore the intricate relationships that humans have shared with the wild. These practices, extraordinary for their time, open a window into understanding the environmental, social, and possibly even epidemiological aspects of human history. In summary, the journey of baboons in ancient Egypt, from sacred deities to a scientific enigma, traverses through various facets of human knowledge. As we unravel these mysteries, we gain more than just historical insight. We also uncover layers of our relationship with nature, trade, culture, and technology. Gisela Kopp’s study, thus, stands as a testament to the power of interdisciplinary research in rewriting history, offering new perspectives on our shared past, and inspiring a deeper exploration into the annals of human civilization. The full study was published in the journal eLife. — Like what you read?
