FreeAgent, the cloud-accounting software specialist, has released the results of a new survey that underlines just how much automation can do for your work/life balance and business profits. Key findings reveal that nearly 1 in 2 accountants (49%) believe an automated workflow will lead to a reduction in stress and/or boredom from dealing with data-entry tasks. A similar number (48%) believe it will help provide a better work/life balance. The new research also highlights that 81% of accountants think they can save up to 2 hours a day (10 hours a week) by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate simple tasks, unlocking up to £68,163 of additional revenue annually.Nearly 1 in 4 (24%) Scottish accountants believe they could save a sizeable 3-4 hours a day through automation, potentially unlocking up to £119,285.25 of additional revenue annually. When asked to predict how quickly the industry will embrace technology to automate some or all accounting tasks, 59% of the 200 respondents think only some tasks will be automated within one year, 72% think some tasks will be automated within five years and 59% think the majority of tasks will be automated within 10 years.Younger people have more faith in technology, with 77% of 18-35 year olds stating that some accounting tasks will be automated within five years, compared to 57% of over 55s. In contrast, nearly 1 in 10 (9%) of those aged 55+ believe no automation is coming to the accounting industry within 10 years, compared to one in 50 (2%) of 18-35 year olds. The research also suggests that the Welsh are the most skeptical of any imminent change technology will bring to the sector, with just 33% believing some accounting tasks will be automated in one year’s time, compared to 72% of those based in the South East. Accountants see artificial intelligence as most useful for accurate auto-reconciling of data in client accounts (50%), preventing clients entering incorrect information (45%), and dealing with HMRC (44%) with 90% of those in larger firms (of over 300 people) being interested in using AI, compared to 76% of those in of firms up to 50 people Again, age seems to have an impact on willingness to embrace technology, with 40% of over 55s say they are not interested in using AI in their practice, compared to just 14% of younger colleagues. Unsurprisingly, the majority of accountants across the board (61%) believe that technology’s biggest impact in a firm will be around increasing the automation of data. However, many accountants believe other aspects of the industry will be impacted by technology: Over one in three (37%) think technology will lead to less face-to-face time spent with clients. Meanwhile, male accountants are twice as likely to believe technology will provide wider accessibility to challenger banks and new finance providers (42% vs 21%). Nearly 1 in 2 accountants (49%) believe automation will lead to a reduction in stress and/or boredom from dealing with data-entry tasks, and a similar number (48%) believe it will help provide a better work/life balance. However, those working in the capital are clearly hoping technology will provide some relief from the day to day grind, with 68% of London-based accountants believing automation will help with work/life balance, compared to just 9% of those based in the East of England. Twice as many women (43%) as men (20%) believe automation will provide opportunities for growth. Ed Molyneux, co-founder and CEO at FreeAgent said, “When small simple tasks require paperwork and endless data-entry, they are the things that often get left to the end of the day or week. Not only does this take up a significant amount of time when you eventually get around to them, but it can lead to unnecessary levels of stress and boredom.I am therefore not surprised that almost half the accountants we surveyed believe that automation will help provide a better work/life balance and reduce stress. Essentially automation gives people back time, which is not only beneficial to them but can save a company a huge amount in hours for just one employee over a year. By simply eliminating mundane, complicated processes around simple tasks, automation can bring explosive change that truly has the potential to revolutionize accountancy as a profession. In our survey, we see that accountants - and women, in particular - believe automation can open the door to opportunities for growth in business and create the chance for them to excel. With less time spent on admin and logging data, accountants then have time to focus on other aspects of the job including more consultative work, which will also bring significant benefits to their clients.”

It looks like Intel's Z490 and various other 400-series chipset based motherboards that feature the Intel I225 2.5Gb Ethernet controller have an underlying issue that may potentially affect networking performance.According to XFastest (via Videocardz), Intel has reportedly issued an update on its Foxville network controller which would be more commonly referred to as I225-V in the upcoming 400-series boards that are launching this week. The I225-V 'Foxville' is a 2.5Gbe network controller which is designed to standardize 2.5Gbe LAN across the mainstream platform. Intel's network controllers are used on both Intel's own chipset based motherboards and also those that feature AMD's chipsets. A slide showcasing Intel's internal assessment of the Foxville 'Inter Packet Gap (IPG)' reveals that the I225-V has an issue which would lead to packet loss and reduced network performance in the range of 1-10 Mb/s.A list of mitigations with current silicon of the I225-V controller are mentioned which simply advise users/OEMs to set the Foxville Controller link to operate at 1 Gb/s however, a proper hardware-level fix needs to be issued through an updated HW stepping which is stated to arrive in 2H 2020, close to the launch time frame of Rocket Lake-S CPUs. While Rocket Lake-S CPUs will be compatible with the Z490 platform, it looks like proper functionality would require users to get the revised Z490 motherboards with the latest HW stepping for the I225-V controller that fixes the IPG Variance networking issue. It's also interesting that this slide had to be leaked by someone to make the public aware of the issue. If not, users would've bought the upcoming Z490 motherboards and could've faced issues that cannot be resolved by software-level fixes. With that said, there would be several Z490 options that don't solely rely on 2.5Gbe controllers as there would be 1/5/10 Gbe options to select from. But those who are waiting for cheaper and more mainstream options with the 2.5Gbe controllers should beware and wait for an official response from Intel on this matter.

Google has revealed that Microsoft managed to break an important security feature in all Chromium-based web browsers, including Chrome, with its Windows 10 1903 update. The security feature in question is the Chromium sandbox. The sandbox should allow users to run apps and extensions is a virtual environment separate from your operating system. If the download you’re running in the sandbox contains malicious code, it won’t be able to access or infect your operating system. It’s a very useful tool, but at some point Microsoft managed to include a “security feature bypass vulnerability” (as Microsoft itself terms it in a security advisory), which means Windows 10 failed to “properly handle token relationships”. Essentially, what this means is that a malicious user could exploit the vulnerability and allow an application with one integrity level execute code at a different integrity level – and escape the Chromium sandbox and run code that could affect the host PC. Basically, exactly the opposite of what the sandbox is designed for.As Google’s Project Zero team, which found this issue, notes in a blog post, “The sandbox works on the concept of least privilege by using Restricted Tokens” – and if those tokens aren’t handled correctly, your PC can be put at risk. The whole blog post is worth reading – though it is very technical – as it explains in depth how this vulnerability works. The fact that it affects Chrome – the most widely-used web browser in the world – is certainly worrying, even if you don’t use the sandbox feature. It shows that Microsoft’s recent problems with Windows 10 updates are affecting other developers' software as well. It’s not just Chrome that’s been hit either, but any browser that uses the Chromium engine. Embarrassingly, that also now includes the new Microsoft Edge.Perhaps even more embarrassingly, Microsoft has released a patch to fix the vulnerability – Windows 10 KB4549951 – but it's been discovered that that patch has been causing serious problems for some users. We've contacted Microsoft for comment, and will update this story when we hear back.

BMW and Volkswagen are among European automakers rebooting their car factories to take advantage of easing coronavirus lockdown rules. VW restarted production at its home plant in Wolfsburg on Monday, while BMW is cranking up engine manufacturing, also starting Monday. BMW, VW and Daimler, are banking on Germany's ability to trace and contain the coronavirus, and a healthcare system capable of extensive testing to identify possible carriers of the disease. Production capacity in the Wolfsburg plant will be at around 10 per cent to 15 percent to begin with, and reach around 40 percent of pre-crisis levels in the week after, said Andreas Tostmann, VW brand's board member responsible for production. "The restart of Europe's biggest car factory after weeks of standstill is an important symbol for our employees, our dealers, suppliers, the German economy and for Europe," Tostmann said.VW builds the Golf compact hatchback in Wolfsburg. This week 1,400 cars will be built, followed by 6,000 cars in a fortnight, VW said. VW has overhauled its procedures to include extra hygiene measures. Workers are told to measure their temperature and to get changed into their overalls at home, to prevent crowding in factory changing rooms. Extra markings have been put on the factory floor so that workers are better able to adhere to a 1.5 meter social distancing rule, and extra time is provided so that employees can disinfect their tools and surfaces, VW said. VW resumed production of its battery-powered ID3 hatchback on Thursday. Deliveries of the ID3 are due to start in Europe in the summer. It's a key launch for VW as the first vehicle in its new generation of affordable, long-range electric cars. The automaker's factory in Bratislava, which builds Porsche, VW and Audi large SUVs and minicars, also reopened on Thursday.Encouraged by a fall in infection rates, Germany has allowed small retail stores, including car dealerships, to reopen, provided they adhere to strict distancing and hygiene rules. VW said about 70 percent of its dealerships in Germany had re-opened.VW's other plants in Germany and in Portugal, Spain, Russia and the U.S. will restart production in the week from April 27, the automaker said in a news release. Through May, production will be resumed successively in South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, VW said. BMW aims to reopen its factory building Rolls-Royce cars in Goodwood, England, on May 4, and resume production at its U.S. plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which builds SUVs for global markets, on the same day.BMW plans to restart output at its biggest European plant in Dingolfing, Germany, and in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, on May 11. The automaker's German plants in Munich, Leipzig and Regensburg will open after May 18, as will the company's factory that builds Mini cars in Oxford, England. "The exact dates for the restart will depend on the development in the markets and customer demand," a BMW spokesperson said. BMW's factory in Shenyang, China, has been producing since Feb. 17. BMW will initially start production at the plants with one shift. Normally, the plants work in two or three shifts. To protect the employees, hygiene and distance regulations are established and processes are reorganized.Workers need to wear masks and keep a distance to one another. The seating order on BMW factory buses has been changed, as has the process for entering and exiting the bus. Workers need to come to the plant already wearing their factory clothes, to avoid time stuck in changing rooms, and designated pathways in the plant have been altered to ensure there is "one-way" traffic only, BMW said.Daimler's Mercedes-Benz German plants in Sindelfingen and Bremen are also making preparations to ramp up production.Unlike Italy and Spain, Germany never banned car production, though factories came to a standstill after authorities restricted the movement of people and ordered the closure of car dealerships, hitting demand. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will restart van production at its Sevel plant in central Italy on Monday, with plans to resume production at a rate of between 70 percent to 80 percent. The automaker also aims to resume output of new plug-in hybrid versions of the Jeep Compass and Renegade at its factory in Melfi, southern Italy, starting Monday. In France, Toyota has restarted its assembly plant in Valenciennes.Renault aims to resume output on April 28 at its factory in Flins, France, where it builds the Renault Zoe electric small car and the Nissan Micra small hatchback. PSA Group is not saying when it will reopen European factories. The maker of Peugeot, Citroen and Opel automobiles said there is no point in building up inventories while sales are dormant."It's important to have dealership and sales activity before we push the button," Chief Financial Officer Philippe de Rovira told analysts.Nissan will restart production at its Barcelona factory starting on May 4 and is piloting safety measures at its plant in Sunderland, England. Sweden's Volvo Cars reopened its Torslanda factory on April 20 after overhauling its production processes. "The economy has come to a halt in Europe. A vaccine will take a long long time. It is important to restart in a safe way. Hopefully we can contribute to a normalization," Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said.Jaguar Land Rover will begin building cars again at its plants in Solihull, England, and Nitra, Slovakia, on May 18.Europe's car industry, which accounts for about 14 million jobs across the region, is eager to get back to work, even though it's unclear whether buyers will return to showrooms once lockdowns are lifted. The extent of the reboot differs by country. Portugal, for example, has allowed most factories to keep running throughout the crisis.Automakers are expected to run assembly lines at slower rates until demand climbs back toward pre-crisis levels.

Your parents might have told you that your Art History degree would never help you in the real world, and I’ll bet you are very excited to tell them about the marginal advantage you have now gained in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. For many island denizens, today is the first day with a full visit from Redd, a shifty fox with a trawler full of counterfeit art and, sometimes, real art. If you’re a well-versed expert in all manner of painting and statuary from various cultures, you should have no problem telling real from fake. Everyone else will need help. I’m working on a full list as well as some callouts for individual pieces—its sort of fun to take the opportunity to look at a single painting—but it’s taking a second given lockdown-related time constraints. For now, we’re just going to go with a set of guidelines. To start with, only one of the works of art on display will be real, so you’ve got a 1 in 4 chance of picking right if you pick randomly. If you can eliminate one or two, you’re on your way. The problem is that you won’t know what the real names of these works of art without bringing them to Blathers: on the ship they’re all reduced to weird little descriptors. Van Gogh’s Starry Night becomes “Twinkling Painting”, The Mona Lisa becomes “Famous Painting”, and so on. For the more famous ones, you can probably figure it out. But you won’t know the precise names of many of the works of art you’re looking at.The first thing you can do is use common sense: should that Olmec Head be smiling? Probably not. That will really only take you so far, however, because many of the differences are very subtle: I wouldn’t necessarily expect you to know the accurate color of an ermine in Renaissance Portraiture.

In an unintended consequence of the lockdown courtesy Covid-19, India’s social media elite has taken to TikTok to combat boredom and anxiety. Until recently, this section of online users frowned upon TikTok’s content and labelled it “cringe-worthy” even as users from tier-II and -III cities gained rewards and recognition through the platform, turning India into the biggest market for the Chinese video-sharing social network.lagship product with open arms. “India 1 is softening towards TikTok, accepting its idiosyncrasies instead of labelling it cringe-worthy,” says Ishtaarth Dalmia, an anthropologist and AVP strategy at digital agency Webchutney. One of the reasons TikTok has been able to catch on with India’s social media elite is due to a surge in its visibility on other po[CENSORED]r platforms.

A new piece of concept art from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker turns Rey into Kylo Ren. Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) were the main protagonist and antagonist of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which came to an end last December. Kylo Ren was the son of Leia Organa and Han Solo and turned to the dark side, while Rey was a Jedi in training, who turned out to be a descendant of Emperor Palpatine. Rey possibly turning to the dark side was something slightly teased in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which came full circle in The Rise of Skywalker. Rey didn't turn to the dark side despite being related to Palpatine (or more accurately a clone of Palpatine), but Rey did have a vision of herself as a Sith. The scene was brief, yet shocking all the same. Since the film's release, there have been several pieces of The Rise of Skywalker concept art come out revolving around Dark Rey, but an alternate version of the scene shows her becoming Kylo Ren. The newest piece of Dark Rey concept art comes from artist Adam Brockbank. In this piece, Rey can be seen dressed as Kylo Ren and taking off his helmet. The piece also makes Rey look incredibly menacing by giving her orange eyes and red fading around her eyes While Rey was the main hero of the sequel trilogy, the character has received a lot of criticism that dates back to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the film, Rey is an incredibly talented pilot and is even able to best Kylo Ren in their lightsaber duel. Many complained that it didn't make sense for Rey to be such a powerful character without having any form of training. Then in The Last Jedi, fans were upset with the explanation that Rey's parents were nothing more than drunks, which was later retconned with the Palpatine twist, making fans even more heated. Regardless of one's opinion on Rey, there's no doubt this is the most unique piece of Dark Rey concept art that has been released thus far. Having Dark Rey be dressed as Kylo Ren would have been a clear shoutout to The Empire Strikes Back when Luke has his vision of Darth Vader, only for his own face to be revealed under the helmet. It isn't known why Lucasfilm decided not to go this route for Dark Rey, but the decision could have elevated the scene and made Dark Rey a more interesting part of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The global coronavirus death toll approached 200,000 on Saturday as the United Nations launched an international push for a vaccine to defeat the pandemic. Governments around the world are struggling to limit the economic devastation unleashed by the virus, which has infected nearly 2.8 million people and left half of humanity under some form of lockdown. The scale of the coronavirus pandemic has forced medical research on the virus to move at unprecedented speed, but effective treatments are still far off and the United Nations chief said the effort will require cooperation on a global scale."We face a global public enemy like no other," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told a virtual briefing on Friday, asking for international organizations, world leaders and the private sector to join the effort. "A world free of COVID-19 requires the most massive public health effort in history."Any vaccine should be safe, affordable and available to all, Guterres said at the meeting, which was also attended by the leaders of Germany and France. But notably absent were the leaders of China, where the virus first emerged late last year, and the United States, which has accused the UN's World Health Organization of not warning quickly enough about the original outbreak. The spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, is increasing other medical risks as well with the WHO warning nearly 400,000 more people could die from malaria because of disruption to the supply of mosquito nets and medicines.Saturday marked World Malaria Day, a disease which the WHO said could kill around 770,000 this year, or "twice as much as in 2018". With more than four billion people on lockdown or stay-at-home orders to slow the spread of the virus, governments are weighing how to lift restrictions without causing a spike in infections and how to revive economies battered by weeks of closure. The daily death toll in Western countries seems to be falling, a sign hopeful epidemiologists had been looking for, but the WHO has warned that other nations are still in the early stages of the fight. Global COVID-19 deaths have climbed past 195,000, according to an AFP tally, but new reported cases appear to have leveled off at about 80,000 a day. The United States is the hardest-hit country by far in the pandemic, recording more than 51,000 deaths and over 890,000 infections. The UN chief's urgent vaccine appeal came a day after US President Donald Trump prompted outcry and ridicule with his suggestion that disinfectants be used to treat coronavirus patients. As experts — and disinfectant manufacturers — rushed to caution against any such dangerous experiment, the president tried to walk back his comments, saying he had been speaking "sarcastically.""I can't believe I have to say this, but please don't drink bleach," tweeted Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee to face Trump in November's election. The world's biggest economy has been hammered by the pandemic, with 26 million jobs lost since the crisis began, and American leaders are under pressure to find ways to ease social distancing measures.Despite criticism from Trump, the governor of Georgia allowed some businesses, including nail salons and bowling alleys, to reopen on Friday, sparking both criticism and relief. The mayor of the state's capital Atlanta condemned the "irresponsible" move, telling ABC News: "There is nothing essential about going to a bowling alley or giving a manicure in the middle of a pandemic."In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended her stay-at-home order until May 15, but she eased some restrictions by allowing landscapers and bike mechanics to return to work, and ended prohibitions against golfing and motorboating. The unprecedented situation has left the world staring at its worst downturn since the Great Depression, and world leaders are trying to balance public health concerns with economic need.Beyond the US, other countries have already started loosening restrictions.Sri Lanka said it would lift a nationwide curfew on Monday after more than five weeks, as Belgium became the latest European nation to announce an easing from mid-May. In France, which will be on lockdown until May 11, residents still confined to home have taken to praising health workers and protesting their frustrations with officials on painted banners hung outside their windows."Thank you to the caregivers, shame on the leaders" read one such banner hanging outside a building in a Paris suburb. On the other side of the world in Australia and New Zealand, people held vigils from the isolation of their own driveways to pay tribute to their war veterans on Anzac Day.

Remote workers are being targeted by a wide-ranging new online scam looking to steal business logins.Researchers at security firm Cofense have uncovered a phishing campaign masquerading as emails from HR departments. The scam targets employees who are still getting used to working from home, tricking them into giving away credentials such as login details through fake remote working enrolment forms.Cofense found that the hackers were exploiting the po[CENSORED]r Microsoft Sway application to steal credentials and host phishing websites Sway is a free application from Microsoft that allows employees to generate documents such as newsletters and presentations and is commonly used by professionals to conduct their regular day to day work tasks. The criminals used this service to create and send out emails containing subject lines such as ‘Employee Enrollment Required’ and ‘Remote Work Access.' Claiming to come from "Human Resources", and phrased to resemble official internal communications the email asks the recipient to click on a link to enroll in an remote working policy. However clicking on this link sends the victim to a fake phishing site, where their credentials are stolen and potentially sold on. Cofense says it has detected multiple instances of such scams, and warns that as they often used legitimate domains and URLs, these campaigns went undetected for a long periods of time, which could mean a large number of accounts were compromised."As employees have rapidly shifted to remote working, threat actors have started to look at ways they capitalize on the COVID-19 pandemic to spoof new corporate policies and legitimate collaboration tools to harvest valuable corporate credentials, a trend we anticipate will only continue to gain steam in the foreseeable future," Kian Mahdavi from the Cofense Phishing Defense Center wrote in a blog explaining the threats.Cofense recommends employees take extra care when reading all emails, even those claiming to come from their employer, and check links by hovering their cursor above the hyperlinked text to ensure it is directing them to a legitimate site.

NVIDIA has announced the date for its GTC 2020 online event a few weeks after it was cancelled: May 14, 2020. The company also jibed that the audience should "GET AMPED" which appears to be a nod to the upcoming next generation GPU architecture codenamed: Ampere. The company had obviously been pretty excited about its GTC 2020 conference and had tried its level best to salvage it in any form, first by not cancelling the event, then by turning it into an online only show and finally a presser; but unfortunately for the company none of these had worked out and it was postponed. The good news it seems is that the delay wasn't a long one and GTC 2020 has been rescheduled to May 14, 2020 - which is just a couple of weeks away. While the company has used the words "Get Amped" in its press release which appears to be an obvious hint to the architecture I would urge some caution where naming is concerned. Until the architecture and GPU are actually revealed, NVIDIA is free to change the naming scheme (in fact they have already done this at 11th hour in the past with the GTX 800 series). That said, it is clear that the company has some big plans for GTC 2020 and this iteration of the event is going to be very exciting. Even more suprisingly, the event will actually be streamed for free for all fans on Youtube. COVID might have cancelled the actual event but you can bet that this is going to be the largest GTC ever in terms of attendees. With all eyes on NVIDIA and not much happening across the industry, we don't have to wait further before the company (hopefully) announces the next generation of GPUs coming out on the (*fingers crossed*) 7nm process. This is also not the first time the company has hinted at a massive launch during GTC 2020. In fact, back in February, Jensen stated: ".... Come join me [at GTC]. You won't be disappointed." Considering Jensen isn't one to make false promises, I am fairly certain we will be looking at a litany of launches (paper or otherwise) at the upcoming GTC conference.Another caveat here though, if the company reveals their Ampere GPU here, in all liklihood this is going to be a server GPU to begin with like always. Historical precedent indicates that this is unlikely to be a gaming reveal - although I would never say never where Jensen is concerned. The hype train has very much arrived at the station. All aboard.

Staff at Newmarket Library, Suffolk, discovered the sloping tomes after the building underwent a deep clean.James Powell, of Suffolk Libraries, said staff "saw the funny side" but it would take a "bit of time" to correct."It looks like libraries will be closed for a while so we'll have plenty of time to sort the books out", he said."The cleaner is lovely and does a great job in the library. It was an honest mistake and just one of those things so we would never want her to feel bad about it," he added.
