Player takes wildcard into event week before Roland Garros Thirty-six year old plans to retire at end of the yea Andy Murray is scheduled to make his return to competition from a significant ankle injury later this month at the Geneva Open. On Wednesday morning the Geneva Open announced that Murray had taken a wildcard into the ATP 250 event, which begins on 19 May, only a week before the start of the Roland Garros main draw begins in Paris. Murray has not competed since he ruptured his ankle ligament late in his third-round match at the Miami Open against Tomas Machac. After an extremely difficult start to the season, the 36-year-old had just begun to find some form in Miami, winning back to back matches for the first time in 2024 during that week. Against Machac, he was in the process of a dramatic comeback, recovering from 2-5 down in the third set to 5-5 just as he hurt his ankle. Despite being able to finish the match and sign autographs afterwards, even coming within two points of winning the match in a decisive tie-break, Murray was diagnosed with a ruptured anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). The injuries put Murray’s retirement plans under serious threat, with the possibility that he might have had to undergo surgery and face an even longer layoff. After consulting numerous experts, though, Murray opted not to have surgery. He has spent the past six months rehabilitating the injury and in recent weeks he began to train on clay. Murray has competed at Roland Garros only once in 2020 since he began to suffer from serious hip problems, but he is keen to return to the tournament, where he was a finalist in 2016, one last time. He plans to contest most of the remaining big events, including the Paris Olympics, which will also be held at Roland Garros before his retirement. After Paris, assuming his ankle continues to hold up well, Murray will head back to the UK for his final appearances at Wimbledon and Queen’s https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/may/08/andy-murray-return-from-injury-geneva-open

Sustainably grown fibres, traceable from farm to garment, could be the antidote to climate-destroying fast fashion. But can this trend ever reach the high street? picture the scene. Kendall Roy, the longtime heir apparent to the media empire at the heart of HBO’s Succession, is in a dark bar in New York. The embodiment of hyper-privilege, he is explaining to anyone that will listen that the cashmere in his half-zip sweater was harvested by indigenous herders on the rangelands of Mongolia. Regenerative fashion is the future of the industry, and the world, he insists. It is a fictional scenario, but it is not hard to imagine. Quiet luxury, which was arguably the biggest trend of last year and claimed Roy as its poster boy, is not about logos. Instead, it is about less obvious codes, such as quality cloth and tailoring created with fibres so precious that their provenance and the way they are cultivated is a selling point. So it should come as no surprise that the ultrarich are turning to brands that are working to protect the landscapes where materials such as cashmere, silk and cotton are grown. In a rapidly heating world, what projects status more than wearing fine merino wool grown on a sheep farm that has so many native trees and grasses it sequesters more carbon than it emits? On Nokomai Station, a sheep farm on New Zealand’s South Island, flocks of dusty-cream merino are free to roam 40,000 hectares (99,000 acres), an area roughly four times the size of Paris. The station is one of approximately 460 sheep farms that make up the New Zealand Merino Company’s regenerative wool initiative, ZQRX. These sheep produce some of the finest wool in the world on a wild and mountainous landscape that is managed according to the principles of regenerative agriculture: restoring biodiversity and minimal intervention to build healthy soil. If it sounds like utopia, that’s because it is. From almost every angle, the farm looks like an AI-generated screensaver. https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/article/2024/may/08/why-regenerative-garments-are-the-ultimate-status-symbol

Researchers say more bodies of Herero and Nama people from early 20th century concentration camp could be in waters around port The Namibian authorities are being urged to halt plans to extend a port on the Shark Island peninsula after the discovery of unmarked graves and artefacts relating to the Herero and Nama genocide. Forensic Architecture, a non-profit research agency, said it had located sites of executions, forced labour, imprisonment and sexual violence that occurred when the island was used by the German empire as a concentration camp between 1905 and 1907. More than 65,000 Herero people and 10,000 Nama were killed by German troops between 1904 and 1908 in what is widely acknowledged as the first genocide of the 20th century. The attack was in retaliation for a revolt against colonial rule led by paramount chief Samuel Maharero. Many were killed in the camp on the island, which is now a peninsula. Researchers said there was a “credible” risk that human remains could be found in the waters around the peninsula’s port, which the authorities want to expand to support green hydrogen production along the country’s south coast. Historical accounts suggested people who died in the camp were “thrown to the sharks”, said Forensic Architecture. Researchers have called for a moratorium on all development projects in the area and for wider investigations into potential underwater graves. “Any prospective construction needs to be stopped until these sites are fully protected, and thorough studies of the remains on the camp have been done,” said Agata Nguyen Chuong, a Forensic Architecture researcher. “[The] constructions will further desecrate and compromise Shark Island as a site of archaeological, historical and cultural heritage.” Forensic Architecture worked with traditional leaders to identify the locations of the genocide through historical accounts cross-referenced against archival photos, documents and satellite imagery. Ground radar was used to detect anomalies in the soil to identify mass graves https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/may/06/port-extension-call-halted-genocide-remains-namibia-shark-island

Think you don’t need sunscreen? Think again – and the new versions are easy to wear y chance I chatted with three different people in quick succession who all went on (separate) holidays and all got sunburnt. One said she never wears sunscreen at home, would normally while away but seeing as she was swimming, she didn’t think it mattered. The second person hated sunscreen because: “It is just so thick and sludgy and leaves a white cast.” Then there was the one who just doesn’t bother because they feel it interferes with them getting a tan. The misinformation around SPF gives me a headache but here goes, again. Unless you live in a house with no windows, you need sunscreen all year round. Formulations have changed so the dense, white-casting iterations are less of a thing – most mimic the texture and the results of great skincare. The sun is your “frenemy”. It’s a glorious source of vitamin D, aka your friend. But it is also your enemy as it damages your skin. There is nothing healthy about a tan: that’s just sun damage. Sunscreen is protection against skin cancer and skin burning, but it also protects you from hyperpigmentation and premature ageing. If nothing else, I’m hoping people will start wearing sunscreen out of sheer vanity. 1. Hello Sunday The One That’s a Serum SPF 50 £23, hellosundayspf.com 2. David Moyes will leave the role of West Ham manager “by mutual consent” when his contract expires at the end of the season. The club confirmed the news on Monday evening, amid reports that the former Spain, Real Madrid and Wolves head coach, Julen Lopetegui, has agreed a deal to take over in the summer. Moyes said: “I have enjoyed four-and-a-half brilliant years at West Ham, and the club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019. “When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe. “After leading the club to safety, we guided the team to finishes of sixth and seventh in the Premier League, and I was delighted when we won the Europa Conference League title last June – the club’s first major trophy in 43 years. “I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four-and-a-half years.” https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/may/06/david-moyes-leaving-west-ham-mutual-consent
