  2. German police have arrested a teenage asylum seeker suspected of planning a suicide attack in Berlin. The suspect, 17, was arrested in the Uckermark, a district in Brandenburg, the state's Interior Minister, Karl-Heinz Schröter, announced. He entered Germany in 2015, police said. They have not confirmed reports that he is Syrian. In December, a jihadist killed 12 people with a lorry at a Berlin Christmas market. That attack by Anis Amri, a Tunisian, put security services under intense scrutiny because of the way in which the attacker, who was later shot dead by police in Italy, evaded their surveillance and crossed European borders undetected. Special forces arrested the teenager after police received a tip-off, Brandenburg police tweeted (in German). He had sent a message to his family saying farewell and that he was joining the "jihad", the police said. The boy told his family he planned to carry out a suicide attack, Mr Schröter said. His ministry said the suspect was Syrian but police tweeted that neither the "Syrian nationality" nor "concrete attack plans" could yet be confirmed, and that investigations continued. Ten attacks a day on Germany migrants Massive drop in German asylum seekers Can the EU stop another Amri? The suspect had been living in a home for unaccompanied underage refugees in Uckermark since 2016 and had never before come to the attention of police. He is currently being questioned and the home is being searched by the state criminal investigation office, Brandenburg police said. Details of the plot cannot be released due to police operations, which are ongoing, the police added. Some 280,000 asylum seekers arrived in Germany last year, a drop of more than 600,000 compared to 2015. Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to temporarily open the country's borders at the height of the European migrant crisis divided opinion and immigration is an important political issue ahead of the parliamentary election later this year. Mrs Merkel recently moved to try and ramp up deportations of failed asylum seekers. Tunisia had refused to take back Anis Amri after his asylum bid was rejected and pressure has increased on Mrs Merkel's government since the December attack.

  5. Two Chinese Sukhoi Su-30 jets have conducted an "unprofessional" intercept of a US aircraft, the US military said. One of the Chinese jets came as close as 150ft (45m) to the US WC-135 plane and flew upside down above it, according to US officials cited by CNN. The US says the plane was on a mission to detect radiation in international airspace over the East China Sea. Tensions have repeatedly risen over US activity near the resource-rich international waters off China's coast. The intercept, which took place on Wednesday, was deemed unprofessional "due to the manoeuvres by the Chinese pilot, as well as the speeds and proximity of both aircraft," Air Force spokesman Lt Col Lori Hodge said. She said the issue was "being addressed with China through appropriate diplomatic and military channels", and a military investigation was under way. China has not commented on the incident, but it accuses the US of carrying out reconnaissance flights over Chinese coastal waters and regularly calls on the US to reduce patrols in the area. China claims sovereignty over almost all of the disputed territory in the South and East China seas, though several other countries in the region have competing claims. China has backed its expansive claims with island-building and naval patrols. The US sniffer aircraft has previously been used to detect evidence of possible nuclear tests by North Korea. Why is the South China Sea contentious? South China Sea- Island, rock or reef? 'Routine operations' Separately, China and South East Asian countries have agreed a framework for a long-awaited code of conduct for the disputed South China Sea, China's foreign ministry said, without giving details on the content. It will now be submitted to the foreign ministers of the countries in August. Over the years, the US, China and several of the South East Asian countries have had disputes over rival activity in the South China Sea. In February, a US aircraft carrier started what Washington described as "routine operations" in the South China Sea, with a fleet of supporting warships. The deployment came despite Chinese warnings against challenging Beijing's sovereignty in the region. In May 2016, two Chinese fighters carried out a similar intercept of a US military aircraft over the South China Sea. At the time, the US military said its maritime reconnaissance aircraft was carrying out a routine patrol in the area. In 2001, a Chinese jet and a US Navy surveillance aircraft collided off Hainan Island, killing the Chinese pilot. The US spy plane was forced to make an emergency landing on the island and China held the crew members for 11 days, sparking a major diplomatic standoff.

  11. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed artificial intelligence (AI)-based data analysis methods used in a smartphone application of Odum Ltd. The application can estimate its users' health risks and, if necessary, guide them towards a healthier lifestyle. "Based on an algorithm developed by VTT, we can predict the risk of illness-related absence from work among members of the working po[CENSORED]tion over the next 12 months, with an up to 80 percent sensitivity," says VTT's Mark van Gils, the scientific coordinator of the project. "This is a good example of how we can find new information insights that are concretely valuable to both citizens and health care professionals by analysing large and diverse data masses." The application also guides individuals at risk to complete an electronic health exam and take the initiative in promoting their own health. During the project Odum and VTT examined health data collected from 18-64 year-olds over the course of several years. The project received health data from a total of 120,000 working individuals. "Health care costs are growing at an alarming pace and health problems are not being addressed early enough," says Jukka Suovanen, CEO of Odum. "Our aim is to decrease illness-related absences by 30 percent among application users and add 10 healthy years to their lives." The most cost-efficient way to improve quality of life and decrease health care costs for both individuals and society is to promote the health of individuals and encourage them to take initiative in reducing their health risks. VTT is one of the leading research and technology companies in Europe. We help our clients develop new technologies and service concepts in the areas of Digital Health, Wearable technologies and Diagnostics - supporting their growth with top-level research and science-based results.
  12. "What can it do that Windows can't?" That is the first question many people ask when considering Linux for their desktop. While the open source philosophy that underpins Linux is a good enough draw for some, others want to know just how different its look, feel and functionality can get. To a degree, that depends on whether you choose a desktop environment or a window manager. If you want a desktop experience that is lightning fast and uncompromisingly efficient, foregoing the classic desktop environment for a window manager might be for you. What's What "Desktop environment" is the technical term for a typical, full-featured desktop -- that is, the complete graphical layout of your system. Besides displaying your programs, the desktop environment includes accoutrements such as app launchers, menu panels and widgets. In Microsoft Windows, the desktop environment consists of, among other things, the Start menu, the taskbar of open applications and notification center, all the Windows programs that come bundled with the OS, and the frames enclosing open applications (with a dash, square and X in the upper right corner). There are many similarities in Linux. The Linux Gnome desktop environment, for instance, has a slightly different design, but it shares all of the Microsoft Windows basics -- from an app menu to a panel showing open applications, to a notification bar, to the windows framing programs. Window program frames rely on a component for drawing them and letting you move and resize them: It's called the "window manager." So, as they all have windows, every desktop environment includes a window manager. However, not every window manager is part of a desktop environment. You can run window managers by themselves, and there are reasons to consider doing just that. Out of Your Environment For the purpose of this column, references to "window manager" refer to those that can stand alone. If you install a window manager on an existing Linux system, you can log out without shutting down, choose the new window manager on your login screen, and log back in. You might not want to do this without researching your window manager first, though, because you will be greeted by a blank screen and sparse status bar that may or may not be clickable. There typically is a straightforward way to bring up a terminal in a window manager, because that's how you edit its configuration file. There you will find key- and mouse-bindings to launch programs, at which point you actually can use your new setup. In the po[CENSORED]r i3 window manager, for instance, you can launch a terminal by hitting the Super (i.e., Windows) key plus Enter -- or press Super plus D to bring up the app launcher. There you can type an app name and hit Enter to open it. All the existing apps can be found that way, and they will open to full screen once selected. i3 is also a tiling window manager, meaning it ensures that all windows expand to evenly fit the screen, neither overlapping nor wasting space. When a new window pops up, it reduces the existing windows, nudging them aside to make room. Users can toggle to open the next window either vertically or horizontally adjacent. Features Can Be Friends or Foes Desktop environments have their advantages, of course. First and foremost, they provide a feature-rich, recognizable interface. Each has its signature style, but overall they provide unobtrusive default settings out of the box, which makes desktop environments ready to use right from the start. Another strong point is that desktop environments come with a constellation of programs and media codecs, allowing users to accomplish simple tasks immediately. Further, they include handy features like battery monitors, wireless widgets and system notifications. As comprehensive as desktop environments are, the large software base and user experience philosophy unique to each means there are limits on how far they can go. That means they are not always very configurable. With desktop environments that emphasize flashy looks, oftentimes what you see is what you get. Many desktop environments are notoriously heavy on system resources, so they're not friendly to lower-end hardware. Because of the visual effects running on them, there are more things that can go wrong, too. I once tried tweaking networking settings that were unrelated to the desktop environment I was running, and the whole thing crashed. When I started a window manager, I was able to change the settings. Those prioritizing security may want to avoid desktop environments, since more programs means greater attack surface -- that is, entry points where malicious actors can break in. However, if you want to give a desktop environment a try, XFCE is a good place to start, as its smaller software base trims some bloat, leaving less clutter behind if you don't stick with it. It's not the prettiest at first sight, but after downloading some GTK theme packs (every desktop environment serves up either these or Qt themes, and XFCE is in the GTK camp) and enabling them in the Appearance section of settings, you easily can touch it up. You can even shop around at this centralized gallery to find the theme you like best. You Can Save a Lot of Time... if You Take the Time First If you'd like to see what you can do outside of a desktop environment, you'll find a window manager allows plenty of room to maneuver. More than anything, window managers are about customization. In fact, their customizability has spawned numerous galleries hosting a vibrant community of users whose palette of choice is a window manager. The modest resource needs of window managers make them ideal for lower specs, and since most window managers don't come with any programs, they allow users who appreciate modularity to add only those they want. Perhaps the most noticeable distinction from desktop environments is that window managers generally focus on efficiency by emphasizing mouse movements and keyboard hotkeys to open programs or launchers. Keyboard-driven window managers are especially streamlined, since you can bring up new windows, enter text or more keyboard commands, move them around, and close them again -- all without moving your hands from the home row. Once you acculturate to the design logic, you will be amazed at how quickly you can blaze through your tasks. In spite of the freedom they provide, window managers have their drawbacks. Most significantly, they are extremely bare-bones out of the box. Before you can make much use of one, you'll have to spend time reading your window manager's documentation for configuration syntax, and probably some more time getting the hang of said syntax. Although you will have some user programs if you switched from a desktop environment (the likeliest scenario), you also will start out missing familiar things like battery indicators and network widgets, and it will take some time to set up new ones. If you want to dive into window managers, i3 has thorough documentation and straightforward configuration syntax. The configuration file doesn't use any programming language -- it simply defines a variable-value pair on each line. Creating a hotkey is as easy as writing "bindsym", the key combination, and the action for that combination to launch. While window managers aren't for everyone, they offer a distinctive computing experience, and Linux is one of the few OSes that allows them. No matter which paradigm you ultimately go with, I hope this overview gives you enough information to feel confident about the choice you've made -- or confident enough to venture out of your familiar zone and see what else is available.
  13. US President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on the media during a rally marking 100 days in office. He told supporters in Pennsylvania that he was keeping "one promise after another", dismissing criticism as "fake news" by "out of touch" journalists. Mr Trump decided to skip the White House Correspondents' Dinner - the first US leader to miss the event since an injured Ronald Reagan in 1981. Mr Trump's approval ratings hover at around the 40% mark - believed to be lower than any other president at the 100-day marker. At the rally in Harrisburg, the president said the media should be given "a big, fat, failing grade" over their coverage of his achievements during his first 100 days and told the cheering crowd he was "thrilled to be more than 100 miles from Washington". He quipped that at the same time "a large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling themselves" at the correspondents' dinner "that will be very boring". Until now, late president Ronald Reagan in 1981 was the last US leader to miss the annual dinner, when he was recovering from an assassination attempt. Addressing the journalists and celebrities at the dinner in Washington, Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason defended his profession, saying it was "our job to report on facts, and to hold leaders accountable". "We are not 'fake news'. We are not failing news organisations, and we are not the enemy of the American people," Mason said. Turning to his election pledges, Mr Trump said the first 100 days had been "very exciting and very productive". He said he was "delivering every single day" by: Ending "jobs theft" and bringing them back to the US from overseas Easing regulations on energy exploration, including halting a "war on coal" Pulling out of international deals not beneficial to the US, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership Mr Trump also said the administration of Barack Obama had resulted in "a mess", stressing that he was ready for "great battles to come and we will win in every case". On climate change, Mr Trump said "a big decision" would be taken within the next two weeks. He earlier described climate change as a hoax, vowing to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement. But despite Mr Trump's claim to be keeping his promises, he has failed to start construction on the wall he plans along the US-Mexico border - or to get Mexico to pay for it. "We'll build the wall, folks, don't even worry about it," the president said. On another campaign promise, to label China a currency mani[CENSORED]tor, he said now was not "the best time." Ahead of the speech, tens of thousands took part in protests across the US against the Trump administration's stance on climate change. The People's Climate March was timed to coincide with the 100th day of his presidency. In Washington, the demonstrators marched from the US Capitol to the White House. Organisers said they wanted to put the climate debate firmly on the agenda for next year's midterm elections.

  15. A SMART pill that could replace the colonoscopy and revolutionise the diagnosis of gut disorders has been developed by Australian researchers and succeeded in human trials. The pill which is the size of a vitamin capsule is swallowed by the patient and it measures gases in the stomach as it travels through the intestinal tract over 24 to 48 hours. The readings are beamed back to the patient’s smart phone and a doctor’s computer. One in five people will suffer from a gastrointestinal disorder in their lifetime, yet one in three will remain undiagnosed and researchers believe this device will transform their diagnosis. And for some patients it will replace the need for invasive endoscopies and colonoscopies which involve days of restrictive dieting and purging the system before a camera is inserted into the colon or intestines while the patient is sedated. More than 460,000 colonoscopies are performed every year in Australia costing over $380 million. But the medical marvel may never make it to the market because researchers need $30-$40 million to conduct phase 2 and phase 3 trials needed before it can be considered safe and effective by medical regulators. The device was developed by RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) researchers Distinguished Professor Kourosh Kalantar Zadeh and engineer Nam Ha and costs just $70 to make. If doctors want to test for just a single gas in a person’s stomach the price of the device can be as low as $10 per smart pill. Professor Kalantar Zadeh says many gastrointestinal diseases can’t be diagnosed by a camera because they relate to the microbiome in the gut and establishing the balance of gases in the gut is the best way to detect them. Currently, one of the only methods for diagnosing these gut disorders, such as malabsorption of carbohydrates, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammable bowel disease, is to measure hydrogen concentrations in the breath, Professor Kalantar Zadeh said. However, these tests are only 60 per cent effective. The stomach produces hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, oxygen and hydrogen sulphide gases. “If these gases are active at higher or lower levels than normal it can affect your health,” said Professor Kalantar Zadeh. “If you have excessive methane or too little you become constipated or get diarrhoea. “If you have malabsorption of carbohydrates or fructose you produce lots of hydrogen.” The ingestible technology has demonstrated several thousand -times more sensitivity to gut gases than alternative techniques. The phase one trials showed the device was safe and that it was excreted by patients in the trial, there was no risk of it being retained in the body. And the trial showed the capsules could be synched with smartphones. Professor Kalantar Zadeh says if the device makes it to the market there may need to be a discussion with authorities about whether it can be flushed down the toilet. To get the device on to the market researchers need $40 million to conduct phase 2 and phase 3 trials on thousands of people to prove to regulators it is safe and effective but to date no funders have come forward. “If we had investors by tonight we could start trials in six months, “ said Professor Kalantar Zadeh. “Gas sensing is just the beginning.” The outcomes of the human trials will be presented next month in Chicago at Digestive Disease Week (DDW), the most significant annual gathering of gastroenterologists and food scientists in the world. After the non-reusable capsule is excreted, it’s flushed down the toilet.
  16. Porsche is out testing prototypes for its next-generation 911. The latest prototype, likely for a Carrera S model, reveals some details not seen on previous testers. Most of the new details can be found at the rear which sports a wide spoiler that spans the width of the car. The taillights also consist of one long strip that appears to follow the curve of the rear spoiler’s leading edge, and the exhaust tips are positioned slightly closer to the center of the rear bumper. It also looks like the rear intakes are larger than on the current model. And at the front, we can see that the headlights are positioned at a slightly different angle than on the current 911. From the earlier test mules, we know the next-gen 911 will be slightly wider than the current model, as evidenced by some wheel arch extensions. Underpinning the car is believed to be a new modular sports car platform being developed by Porsche. The platform will allow greater flexibility when it comes to positioning of the engines and suspension hardware. It will also enable Porsche to finally add hybrid technology to the 911. The platform will also underpin next-generation versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman and possibly the next-gen Audi R8 as well as Lamborghini’s replacements for the Aventador and Huracán. While all of these models are mid-engined, the 911 will retain its signature rear-engine mounting. There could be a mid-engine 911 model at some point, though. Porsche already has a mid-engine 911 race car, and execs have hinted at a mid-engine 911 road car. Sadly, plans for a standalone mid-engine supercar from Porsche have been put on the backburner to free up resources for the development of electric car technology. Expect the next-gen 911 to be introduced in 2018, initially in base Carrera and Carrera S form. The car should arrive as a 2019 model. Shortly after the debut of the coupe, we'll see the convertible. Power for both will come from the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine that debuted in the 2017 911. At present, the engine delivers 370 horsepower and 331 pound-feet torque in the Carrera and 420 hp and 368 lb-ft in the Carrera S.
