Helldivers 2 devs have proven before that they aren't above a little trolling—proclaiming that bugs can't fly (they can), that there are no such things as heavy machine guns (there are) and that blue lasers aren't real (jury's still out on that one). Super Earth propagandists have apparently discovered new and creative ways to mess with us, however, as shared on the official Helldivers Twitter today. The meme, lab-grown by only the finest experts in our glorious managed democracy's R&D department, shows the Super Earth spokesperson deliberating over a choice between two stratagem inputs, and—hey, wait a minute! As you might have pieced together by now, neither of these stratagem inputs are in the game at the moment, which means that Arrowhead is teasing two new stratagems here. Despite claiming that the post is "Managed Democracy manifest", there doesn't appear to be a way to vote. Which is sort of fitting since, in-universe, voters just fill out a questionnaire and have a candidate selected for them anyway. After all, informed and purposeful decisions only slow the march of democracy down. As to what these mystery stratagems could be, the smart money's on one of those vehicle leaks that've been broadcast on treasonous channels or dropped into games by fake Joels lately. Out of sheer curiosity and a love of liberty, I decided to check and see if any of these inputs were featured in the first game—nope, no cigar. Which means these things could be anything from those aforementioned leaks—a warthog-style vehicle, a machine gun with its own barricade—or something we've never seen before. I'm apparently "not allowed to suggest weapons anymore" because they're "unsafe" and "out of budget", but if I could choose, I'd add a payload of randomly-selected stratagem beacons and a mech with two flamethrowers to the current roster. That, or a giant boombox that destroys enemies with our own freedom-loving raps. We cannot let the Automaton's fire disses go unpunished Harvey's history with games started when he first begged his parents for a World of Warcraft subscription aged 12, though he's since been cursed with Final Fantasy 14-brain and a huge crush on G'raha Tia. He made his start as a freelancer, writing for websites like Techradar, The Escapist, Dicebreaker, The Gamer, Into the Spine—and of course, PC Gamer. He'll sink his teeth into anything that looks interesting, though he has a soft spot for RPGs, soulslikes, roguelikes, deckbuilders, MMOs, and weird indie titles. He also plays a shelf load of TTRPGs in his offline time. Don't ask him what his favourite system is, he has too many. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/helldivers-2-devs-send-players-into-a-frenzy-as-they-tease-2-new-potential-stratagems-via-meme-propaganda/

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has cautioned his US counterpart Antony Blinken against stepping on China's "red lines”, as the two country's top diplomats met in Beijing on Friday. Mr Wang opened the meeting with a question which sounded more like a warning: "Should China and the United States keep to the right direction of moving forward with stability or return to a downward spiral?" The China-US relationship is beginning to stabilise, but it is still being tested by "negative factors", he added. Both countries could either engage in cooperation or confrontation, and even a "slide into conflict", Mr Wang said. He set out what he called China's red lines on its sovereignty, security and development and warned the US not to step on them. Antony Blinken tackles a tough China visit. Will it help? Taiwan just chose a president China loathes. What now? "Negative factors in the [US-China] relationship [are] still increasing and building, and the relationship is facing all kinds of disruptions," Mr Wang said. "China’s legitimate development rights have been unreasonably suppressed and our core interests are facing challenges," he said. Mr Wang did not specify these challenges, but there are several sensitive flashpoints between the two superpowers, including their positions on the South China Sea, US support for the government in Taiwan, and human rights. Mr Blinken, who is on his second visit to China in less than a year, was more circumspect in his remarks to Mr Wang in front of the press. Beijing and Washington have a shared responsibility to move ties forward with "active diplomacy", he said. Nevertheless, he said he would be clear and direct about their countries' differences to avoid miscalculations in what he called the world's most consequential relationship. Some of these differences were highlighted early this week after Washington approved its latest aid package which included military assistance to Taiwan. This drew sharp criticism from Beijing, which called it a "serious violation of the one-China principle". China claims self-governed Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be under Beijing’s control, but the island sees itself as distinct. Mr Blinken's visit also comes a few days after the US passed a law that would force Chinese-owned TikTok to sell the hugely po[CENSORED]r video app or be banned in America. Behind the scenes, the Americans have been warning Beijing to stop exporting parts to Russia that it says helps Moscow make weapons for its war in Ukraine, with a threat of sanctions hovering over the talks. This visit though is part of a significant increase in dialogue and diplomacy, however frosty, between these rival powers - an attempt to put relations on an even keel, after a period of immense tension last year. During a call earlier this month, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed avenues of cooperation, including efforts to combat climate change and narcotics. But they clashed over the US' support for Taiwan and trade restrictions on technology. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2547ll8z0ro

[Sports] Ashworth set to take Newcastle to arbitration
Wolf.17 posted a topic in Sport / Biographies
Dan Ashworth is set to take Newcastle to arbitration in an effort to resolve the impasse over his intended move to Manchester United. Ashworth has been on gardening leave since 19 February after informing Newcastle he wanted to join the revamped set-up under Ineos at Old Trafford. The Red Devils' intention is for the 53-year-old to become their new sporting director. However, there has been no agreement over compensation. Manchester United have become increasingly resigned to not getting Ashworth into the club until after the summer transfer window has closed. Yet even that hinges on a resolution to the impasse and so far the two parties are a long way apart. In an interview with the BBC's Sports Editor Dan Roan in February, new Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said it "doesn’t make sense for Dan Ashworth to be sat around doing nothing for 18 months". With no conclusion in sight, Ashworth intends to seek a proactive resolution in a case which will be decided by a third party - although it is felt Newcastle are confident in their position. Ashworth previously worked at West Bromwich Albion, the Football Association and Brighton before joining Newcastle in 2022. He has a long-standing relationship with Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, dating back to Ashworth's spell at the FA. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cyx6pv55y1do -
Conservation actions are effective at reducing global biodiversity loss, according to a major study. International researchers spent 10 years looking at measures, from hatching Chinook salmon to eradication of invasive algae. The authors said their findings offered a "ray of light" for those working to protect threatened animals and plants. One out of every three species monitored is currently endangered because of human activities. In the first study of its kind, published in the journal Science, scientists from dozens of research institutes reviewed 665 trials of conservation measures, some from as far back as 1890, in different countries and oceans and across species types, and found they had had a positive effect in two out of every three of cases. Co-author Dr Penny Langhammer, executive vice-president of environment charity Re:wild, told BBC News: "If you read the headlines about extinction these days, it would be easy to get the impression that we are failing biodiversity - but that's not really looking at the whole picture. "This study provides the strongest evidence to date that not only does conservation improve the state of biodiversity and slow its decline, but when it works, it really works." The success stories include: deforestation rates falling 74% in the Congo Basin, following the introduction of management plans Least Tern breeding rates doubling, because of predator management in Florida's barrier islands. In one out of every five cases, however, the measures had caused the targeted species to decline. But Dr Langhammer said: "One of the most interesting findings was that even when a conservation intervention didn't work for the species that is was intended, other species unintentionally benefited." Creating marine protected areas for Australian seahorses, for example, had meant more of them were eaten as their natural predators' po[CENSORED]tions had increased. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-68897433

Study reveals higher mortality risk for bisexual and lesbian women compared to heterosexual women, highlighting health disparities among sexual minority groups. One of the largest studies to examine mortality differences by sexual orientation has found that, compared with heterosexual women, bisexual women have a 37% higher risk of premature death, while lesbian women have a 20% higher risk. This study, the first of its kind to distinguish between lesbian and bisexual women, sheds light on a long-standing issue of health inequalities among sexual minority women. While previous research has extensively documented inequalities in various health outcomes between sexual minority women and their heterosexual counterparts, there has been limited research into mortality inequalities, particularly between different subgroups within the sexual minority community. The recent findings, spearheaded by researchers from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute in collaboration with institutions such as the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the University of Utah, Boston Children's Hospital, and Columbia University, underscore significant health disparities leading to notable differences in mortality rates. Lead author Sarah McKetta, a Research Fellow at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, emphasizes the pressing need to address preventable causes behind these sexual orientation-related disparities, especially in the face of an increasingly hostile policy environment for LGBTQ individuals in the U.S. Dr. McKetta further explains that LGBTQ individuals face unique forms of stigma, prejudice, and discrimination, which can manifest in various detrimental ways. These societal pressures contribute to chronic stress and unhealthy coping mechanisms, rendering this po[CENSORED]tion more susceptible to poorer health outcomes and premature mortality. The study's ability to stratify results based on the sexual orientation subgroup is highlighted as a significant strength by researchers. Senior author Brittany Charlton, an associate professor of po[CENSORED]tion medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, underscores the distinct stressors faced by bisexual women, both within and outside the LGBTQ community, which stem from biphobia. Charlton further notes that bisexual individuals often experience exclusion from various communities due to assumptions about their sexual orientation based on the gender of their partner. The heightened premature mortality rate observed among bisexual women is concerning, emphasizing the necessity for targeted interventions aimed at reducing these disparities across all sexual minority groups. The researchers propose actionable first steps that can be integrated across the healthcare continuum. These include implementing evidence-based preventive screening for sexual minority women without making assumptions based on identity, enhancing screening and referral for treatment of tobacco, alcohol, and other substance use, and mandating culturally-informed training for healthcare providers attending to sexual minority patients. Dr. McKetta notes that while the findings are significant, they may actually highlight an even greater disparity within the broader U.S. po[CENSORED]tion, considering that study participants were all nurses and thus benefited from numerous protective factors not accessible to the general po[CENSORED]tion. https://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/health/lesbian-bisexual-women-experience-higher-mortality-risk-than-heterosexual-due-to-impact-of-toxic-social-stigma-study-101714110666408.html

Mazda revealed a new electric sedan called the EZ-6 for the Chinese market with an estimated 370-mile range. Mazda will also sell the EZ-6 as a plug-in hybrid that's claimed to have a 620-mile driving range. Part of a joint venture with Chinese automaker Changan, it's highly unlikely the EZ-6 makes it to the U.S. Mazda's first attempt at an EV in the United States flopped. The MX-30 arrived with a mere 100 miles of estimated range and was offered exclusively in California, lasting just two model years. While the Japanese automaker has yet to outline its plans for subsequent American-bound EVs, it has now revealed a new electric sedan for China at the Beijing auto show. Called the EZ-6, it looks like a reincarnation of the gas-powered Mazda 6 sedan that departed after 2021. We're also bummed to report that it most likely won't be offered stateside. An Electric Mazda 6 The EZ-6 is developed as part of a joint venture with Chinese automaker Changan and will go on sale in China by the end of this year. The electric sedan has sleek bodywork and a purposeful stance, with long, thin headlights that flow into a wide, squared-off grille. A full-width light bar stretches across the rear but still includes the circular eye-like elements familiar from past Mazdas. Above the taillight, a retractable wing can raise to improve stability at higher speeds. The EZ-6 is an inch longer than than the last Mazda 6 sedan on our shores. The EZ-6's cabin appears to have rich materials and sports a large 14.6-inch central touchscreen along with a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster. The center console has a simple design with a wireless charging pad, two cupholders, and some classy wood trim that also appears around the window switches on each door. The rear seat has a pair of vents and haptic touch controls for the climate system, and the infotainment system features voice and gesture control. Not many specifics were offered on the EZ-6's electric powertrain, but we do know it is rear-wheel drive, suggesting a single, rear-mounted electric motor. Mazda claims it has a 50/50 weight distribution and says the EZ-6 uses a front strut and rear multilink suspension. Along with the electric powertrain, Mazda will sell the EZ-6 as a plug-in hybrid, although zero details were provided about the accompanying engine. Mazda estimates a driving range for the EV of around 370 miles, with the PHEV supposedly capable of roughly 620 miles on a single tank of fuel. The EZ-6 also comes with "intelligent parking technology" that can be voice-controlled even when the owner is outside of the vehicle. Mazda also showed off a flashy SUV concept called the Arata, which Mazda said will go into production for the Chinese market as the company's second EV by the end of 2025. No details were revealed about the powertrain, but the Arata has a handsome appearance with thin headlights, a blanked-off grille, and a massive slanted D-pillar. While the Arata is certainly a sharp-looking crossover, we are far more disappointed by the thought that the EZ-6 sedan will likely remain exclusive to the Chinese market. An electric sedan with over 300 miles of range would fill a long vacant gap in Mazda's U.S. lineup and, with its rear-wheel-drive configuration, could be one of the most fun-to-drive mass-market EVs yet. Even if the EZ-6 doesn't make it across the Pacific Ocean, we hope Mazda's EV plans for the U.S. include a sedan as handsome as this. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60604525/mazda-ez-6-ev-sedan-details/

The University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles has cancelled its main graduation ceremony on 10 May, citing safety measures. The move comes as protests have erupted on dozens of campuses across the US over the Israel-Gaza war. At Atlanta's Emory University, 28 demonstrators were arrested on Thursday after refusing to leave. In New York City, Columbia University dropped a Thursday night deadline for an end the encampment on its campus. In a statement, USC said it would "not be able to host the main stage ceremony that traditionally brings 65,000 students, families and friends" to its campus. On Wednesday, police arrested at least 93 people at the campus for trespassing, and ordered the dismantling of an encampment. USC announced earlier this month that Muslim student Asna Tabassum would no longer be permitted to deliver a speech as valedictorian due to unspecified security threats. Plans for the centre have been controversial locally and the project has been dubbed "Cop City" by opponents. Emory's police force said protesters had "pushed past" officers protecting the area set up for commencement on Thursday morning. The force acknowledged that chemical irritants had been released as part of crowd control measures, though they said the step had been taken after some members of the crowd threw "objects" at officers.Atlanta Police also confirmed using chemical irritants but denied reports they had fired rubber bullets at protesters. One protester shown on video being detained by police identified herself as Noelle McAfee, chair of Emory's philosophy department. Ms McAfee said she was observing what she described as a peaceful protest when police began to move in and the protesters started to march. "It went from a peaceful protest to mayhem in the matter of a minute," she said. She said she had frozen and been quickly detained. The latest wave of campus protests began after officials at Columbia University called in police to clear a new protest encampment and more than 100 people were arrested. Activists have been calling for universities to "divest from genocide" and to stop investing large school endowments in companies involved in weapons manufacturing and other industries supporting Israel's war in Gaza. Israel is currently facing a case brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice alleging that it is committing genocide against the Palestinians, an accusation Israel has rejected as "baseless". Chisato Mimura, a law student and protest leader at Yale University in Connecticut, told the BBC that activists were upset at President Joe Biden as well as their school officials for "quite literally funding and equipping the weapons used in genocide". "What they're doing is completely putting their full weight behind it," she said. "We are well aware of the prominent role they are playing." Some of the protests on US campuses have been accused of antisemitism. A number of Jewish students have said they have felt unsafe at Columbia and at other universities, although other Jewish students have joined the demonstrations. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68894386
