From the moment former Mayor of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum threw her hat in the ring for the presidency, the result was rarely in doubt. Throughout the long and often gruelling campaign, as she criss-crossed the nation on commercial flights, her double-digit lead in the polls would have reassured her that she was on track to make history. She has now done so, becoming Mexico’s first woman president by a huge margin. It is a watershed moment both for Mexico and her personally. She has already served as Mexico City’s first female mayor. Now, in a few months, she will occupy the National Palace, succeeding her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known by his initials, Amlo. No matter what else happens in her political career or where her six years in power lead her, she will always be the woman who managed to break the glass ceiling in Mexican politics. Given the country’s deeply ingrained patriarchy and entrenched machismo, that is no small feat. Yet once the campaign leaflets are binned and the billboards bearing her face taken down, Mexicans could be forgiven for wondering exactly what kind of president she will be. In a campaign so full of words and speeches, there was precious little policy detail and few specifics about governance. On the stump, she often repeated her basic premise: that she would build the "second floor" of the "Fourth Transformation" – that is, the political project of her ally, Mr López Obrador. President López Obrador and his supporters call it the "Fourth Transformation" or "4T" because they put his movement on a par with three transformative moments in Mexican history: Independence in 1810, the Reform War (and separation of church and state) of 1858 and the Mexican Revolution in 1910. Unsurprisingly, opponents say Mr López Obrador and, by extension, Ms Sheinbaum have delusions of grandeur promoting such a title. But the 4T has become shorthand for a social agenda of universal pensions, student grants and family stipends which have been hugely po[CENSORED]r across Mexico. The programme has lifted an estimated five million people from poverty throughout the country, although there is still widespread deprivation in many regions. “The essence of this transformation is to separate economic power from political power,” she told the BBC in an interview in the eastern state of Veracruz. "Economic power has its path, but government must be directed towards the poor in Mexico." President López Obrador laid the foundations and built the first floor of the project, she said. "Now, we are going to build on the changes he made to the country." "It means more rights, a welfare state, education, health, access to housing, and that a living wage is a right, not a privilege," she added. "That is the difference between neoliberalism and our model, which we call Mexican Humanism." In essence, she stood on a platform of continuity, pledging to double down on President López Obrador’s agenda. Her win shows that was a proposal supported by a sizeable majority of the Mexican electorate. Still, the accusation from her detractors, in particular the second-placed candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez, is that the 4T is mere populism. Furthermore, she suggested Ms Sheinbaum would not be her own woman and would live under her mentor’s authoritarian shadow. Vote for Sheinbaum, get Amlo, her critics suggested. But while some commentators in Mexico seem to expect her to slavishly follow her po[CENSORED]r predecessor’s lead, it does not necessarily follow that she will. There are many recent examples in Latin America where a supposed disciple has confounded expectations by striking out on their own. Ms Sheinbaum herself is dismissive of the accusation. "I will govern with the same principles as Mr López Obrador, and that’s a good thing for Mexicans," she told the BBC. An urbane technocrat from a well-heeled Jewish family, whose maternal grandparents fled the Holocaust, she cuts a very different figure to Amlo. Their rhetorical styles are far apart. He hammers his points home with a flourish, enthralling his base, while she tends to be more measured and clipped. She speaks fluent English, having completed her doctoral thesis in California. Before entering politics, she was an accomplished environmental scientist who served on the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Accordingly, she is likely to be more comfortable on the world stage than her predecessor, whose success partly stems from his direct connection with ordinary people, particularly in indigenous regions and his home state of Tabasco. For his part, Mr López Obrador insists he has no intention of meddling in her administration. He is looking forward to retirement at his ranch in the southern state of Chiapas, he claims. Still, however their relationship evolves once he leaves office, most people want to see a marked improvement from Ms Sheinbaum in one key arena: security. From the launch of her campaign to her victory party - both of which were held in Mexico City’s main plaza, the Zócalo - even her most ardent supporters say they want to see more done to tackle violent crime in the drug-violence ravaged nation. Ms Sheinbaum says she hopes to reduce the murder rate from 23.3 homicides for every 100,000 residents to about 19.4 per 100,000 by 2027. That would put Mexico on par with Brazil. She points to her term as Mexico City mayor, during which statistics suggest she oversaw a 50% reduction in the murder rate in the capital. However, an academic who worked as a security adviser to her campaign said her team acknowledged that strategies which worked for running a city might simply not apply at the national level. As if any reminder were needed of how high the stakes are, this was the most violent election in modern Mexican history. In the final moments of his campaign for mayor of the tiny community of Coyuca de Benítez, Alfredo Cabrera was shaking hands with his supporters as he approached the stage to deliver his closing speech. Suddenly, a gunman appeared from behind him and shot the opposition candidate in the back of the head, killing him instantly. As the crowd fled in sheer panic, some 15 shots rang out. The gunman was killed at the scene by the security forces. Cabrera was the last of dozens of candidates to be murdered in the campaign. His death was a bloody, terrifying end to this most brutal of votes. As he was lying in a pool of blood in western Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum was on stage in Mexico City urging her supporters to "make history". That step is over. Now, to bring drug cartel violence under control, she must succeed where the men who went before her have failed. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cq552vz5y5zo

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport was revealed on May 31 ahead of the Nürburgring 24-hour race. VW says the updated Clubsport will be the most powerful front-wheel-drive Golf, matching its predecessor's 296 horsepower. The new Clubsport has a restyled front end, a new taillight design, and a new drive mode designed for lapping the 'Ring. UPDATE 5/31/24: Today, Volkswagen officially revealed the Clubsport ahead of the Nürburgring 24-hour race. Power for the 2025 model is confirmed to continue at 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. According to VW, the Clubsport can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. In normal spec, the Clubsport is electronically limited to a top speed of 155 mph, though the optional race package increases the limiter to 166 mph. The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport will officially break cover on May 31 ahead of the Nürburgring 24-hour race. Considering Volkswagen has downsized the North American Golf lineup rather than grown it in recent years, we're pretty confident this is another Clubsport we won't get. A Mighty FWD GTI The last Clubsport launched for 2021 as a 45th birthday celebration of the GTI. The new one's launch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Golf. Volkswagen confirmed that the new Clubsport will be the most powerful front-wheel-drive Golf, though the company neglected to offer any specifics beyond that. Currently, the 2024 GTI that's sold in the U.S. pumps out 241 horsepower. However, the 2025 model is getting a slew of updates. The European-spec also sees output increase to 262 horses, and the Golf R boasts 315 horsepower but features an exclusive all-wheel-drive system. Meanwhile, the 2021 Clubsport sat closer to the R on the power spectrum, churning out 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque from its 2.0-liter turbo four. We would expect the updated Club to meet or exceed the former figure. The new Clubsport will also wear a different face than the standard GTI. The new version adds restyled headlights and an illuminated VW logo at the front. A set of redesigned taillights mark changes at the rear, and it rides on a fresh set of standard 19-inch wheels. Plus, lightweight forged 19-inch Warmenau wheels are also available. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60886552/2025-golf-gti-clubsport-confirmed/

More than 43,000 different species of spiders are found in the world. Of these, only a small number are said to be dangerous, and less than 30 (less than one-tenth of one percent) have been responsible for human deaths. Why are so few spiders harmful to humans? Much of the reason may result from the size differences between people and spiders. Spider venom is designed to work on smaller animals, but the venom of some species can produce skin lesions in people or produce allergic reactions that result in fatalities. It is important to understand, however, that “death by spider bite” is very rare since clinics, poison control centers, and hospitals often have various species-specific antivenin (the antitoxin) on hand to treat the bite. The brown recluse spider is one of the most dangerous spiders in the United States. Its venom destroys the walls of blood vessels near the site of the bite, sometimes causing a large skin ulcer. Research in 2013 revealed that a protein in the spider’s venom targets phospholipid molecules, which make up a good portion of cell membranes, and transforms these molecules into simpler lipids. The wound that is produced may require several months to heal, or it may become infected, which could lead to the death of the victim. Deaths from brown recluse spider bites are rare. Most brown recluse spiders, which are also called violin spiders, live in the western and southern United States. Most are about 7 mm (0.25 inch) and have a leg span of about 2.5 cm (1 inch). On the front half of its body (the cephalothorax), it has a dark violin-shaped design, the “neck” of which is formed by a conspicuous furrow on the midline of its back. The brown recluse has extended its range into parts of the northern United States, making its home in caves, rodent burrows, and other protected environments. Brown recluse spiders also set up shop in the undisturbed spaces of buildings, such as attics, storage areas, and wall or ceiling voids. https://www.britannica.com/list/9-of-the-worlds-deadliest-spiders

German head coach Julian Nagelsmann has condemned as "racist" a recent survey that asked participants if they wanted to see more white players on the national football team. The poll by the ARD public broadcaster said 21% of respondents agreed with the proposition. "It is racist. I feel we need to wake up. Many people in Europe had to flee.. searching for a safe country," Nagelsmann said on Sunday. The 36-year-old said he agreed with Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who described the questionnaire as "racist" a day earlier. “Josh [Kimmich] responded really well, with a very clear and thought-out statement,” Nagelsmann said at a briefing at his team's training base. “I see this in exactly the same way. This question is insane. “There are people in Europe who’ve had to flee because of war, economic factors, environmental disasters, people who simply want to be taken in. "We have to ask what are we doing at the moment? We in Germany are doing very, very well, and when we say something like that, I think it’s crazy how we turn a blind eye and simply block out such things." ARD - the German public broadcaster - said it had commissioned the survey to have measurable data, after a reporter working on a documentary on football and diversity was repeatedly asked about the make-up of the national team. The poll was conducted among 1,304 randomly selected respondents. Karl Valks, sports director with the ARD station who commissioned the poll, said the company was "dismayed that the results are what they are, but they are also an expression of the social situation in Germany today". "Sport plays an important role in our society, the national team is a strong example of integration," German media cited him as saying. The current national squad has a number of players with mixed heritage, including captain Ilkay Gündogan and winger Leroy Sané. Germany is hosting the Euro 2024 tournament later this month, and Nagelsmann said his team would be playing "for everyone in the country". They will kick-off the competition with a clash against Scotland at Munich's Allianz Arena on 14 June. The controversy comes just weeks after the team's kit manufacturer, Adidas, was forced to ban fans from buying German football kits customised with the number 44, after media raised their resemblance to the symbol used by World War Two-era Nazi SS units. The SS was responsible for many of the crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis. Members of the SS ranged from Gestapo agents to concentration camp guards. SS duties included administering death camps where millions of Jews and others were put to death. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cw4437m0gkpo

With the strike of a judge's gavel in Delaware, Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden, will become the first child of a sitting president to be a criminal defendant. Prosecutors allege that the younger Biden, 54, lied about his drug use on application forms when he purchased a handgun in 2018. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the three federal counts, in a case that will get under way on Monday with jury selection. Mr Biden has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial - which comes as his father campaigns for re-election - is likely to see prosecutors delve into graphic details of Mr Biden's crack cocaine addiction, potentially providing fodder for the president's political foes. Here is what we know about the case. What are the charges? Mr Biden is facing three federal charges in the case: two counts of making false statements and one count of illegal gun possession. The charges all relate to his purchase of a revolver at a Delaware gun store in October 2018, which he kept for about 11 days. By Mr Biden's own admission, he was deep in the throes of a "full blown addiction" to crack cocaine at the time. The two false statement charges stem from allegations that he lied about his drug use on a federally-mandated form when he purchased the weapon. Specifically, prosecutors allege that he falsely claimed that he was "not an unlawful user of and addicted to any stimulant narcotic drug" when he purchased a Colt Cobra Special revolver. The third count is related to his possession of a firearm while alleged to have been a drug user. The gun was discarded and discovered at a grocery store in Greenville, Delaware, prompting an investigation that ultimately led investigators back to the forms. What evidence is there in the case? To convict Mr Biden, prosecutors will have to convince jurors that he knowingly made false statements on the form in a bid to deceive the store that sold him the pistol. Additionally, they will have to prove that Mr Biden was a drug user or addicted to drugs, and took possession of the gun despite knowing as much. US District Judge Maryellen Noreika has already ruled that defence lawyers cannot argue that the prosecution can only get a guilty verdict by proving Mr Biden was using drugs on the day he bought the weapon. Instead, in a pre-trial hearing, the judge agreed with prosecutors' argument that they need only prove that "unlawful use (had) occurred recently enough to indicate that the individual (was) actively engaged in such conduct". In court filings made ahead of the trial's start, prosecutors suggested that they would rely, in part, on deeply personal text messages and other communications made while Mr Biden was in the throes of addiction. In one such text message cited in court documents, Mr Biden refers to himself as a "liar and a thief and a blame and a user and I'm delusional and an addict unlike beyond and above all other addicts that you know". The prosecution is also expected to rely on the testimonies of witnesses including ex-wife Kathleen Buhle and Mr Biden's ex-partner Hallie Biden - who is also the widow of Mr Biden's brother Beau. Prosecutors will also be able to point to Mr Biden's own 2021 memoir, in which he detailed his experiences as a drug user who was "up twenty-four hours a day, smoking every 15 minutes, seven days a week". "All my energy revolved around smoking drugs and making arrangements to buy drugs - feeding the beast," he wrote in the book. While Mr Biden has himself been quiet about the trial, legal documents filed by his lawyers suggest that they will focus on how much Mr Biden was aware of his addiction at the end of the purchase, and on the quality of the evidence itself. His primary attorney, Abbe Lowell, has sought permission from the court to call upon an expert witness who can testify about an addict's understanding of their substance abuse issues. “Someone, like Mr, Biden who had just completed an 11-day rehabilitation program and lived with a sober companion after that, could surely believe he was not a present tense user or addict,” Mr Lowell wrote. Infamous laptop could feature Among the most prominent pieces of evidence at the trial is likely to be the information on Mr Biden's infamous laptop, which has been the focus of intense media speculation and focus from conservative news outlets. The laptop has also been at the centre of unproven theories linking Mr Biden and his father to corruption, which they both deny. Mr Biden's own lawyers have argued that the computer was tampered with before it fell into the hands of investigators. The special counsel appointed to oversee the probes into Hunter Biden, David Weiss, has said that the tampering argument is a "conspiracy theory" with "no supporting evidence." In a May filing, prosecutors wrote that the laptop contained "significant evidence" of Mr Biden's guilt. Could he go to prison if convicted? The two false statement charges each carry a maximum sentence of up to 10 years, while the third count is punishable by up to five years - meaning that Mr Biden could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Actual sentences for federal crimes, however, are typically less than the maximum penalties specified by law. If Mr Biden is convicted, the judge in the case will ultimately determine the sentence after considering sentencing guidelines and a variety of other legal factors. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4nnr9945vmo
