  10. RAMALLAH, Sunday, May 9, 2021 (WAFA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad al-Maliki said today he had asked the ambassadors of Palestine to begin joint action with their Jordanian counterparts in their host countries, with the goal of reaching out to decision-makers, public opinion and parliaments in these countries and brief them of the Israeli escalation of violence in Jerusalem. “This joint action by the ambassadors comes within the framework of coordinating joint efforts to mobilize the widest international front to press the occupying power to immediately stop its aggression and systematic violations of international law, international humanitarian law, and human rights law against Palestinians living in occupied Jerusalem,” said al-Maliki in a press statement. Al-Maliki said Israel has been utilizing former US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel to enforce a de facto division of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied capital, which is Islam’s third holiest place of worship, and to make such change irreversible. “All the pillars of the occupying state work within one system that aims to Judaize the city, abolish its Arab, Islamic and Christian character, and thus distorting the city, its monuments, its history, its importance, and its Islamic and Christian dimensions,” added the Foreign Minister. Al-Maliki urged the international community to press Israel to stop its escalation of violence in Jerusalem, as well as to provide international protection to the Palestinian people in the occupied capital and the rest of the occupied territories. He also urged the international community to start hinting at considering sanctions against Israel due to its blatant disregard of repeated calls for an end to its ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people. 11. Using scheduling software is almost guaranteed to improve your time management. However, not everyone is using this technology to its full potential. It’s like buying a new Ferrari and only ever driving it five miles under the speed limit. To unlock the top speed of a sports car, you need to know what its engine can do. If you’re interested in little more than the car’s paint job and leather seats, you’re only getting surface-level value. The same goes for scheduling software. Familiarizing yourself with its features and how to maximize them will have your productivity going from 0 to 60 in record time. Plan Ahead There’s a thrill to living in the moment, but that’s hardly a productive lifestyle. If you plan to use your time to the utmost advantage, you need to plan ahead. Ask any industry mogul or successful entrepreneur, and you’ll be impressed by how much planning goes into their everyday life. PROMOTED You should tackle planning on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, which can be accomplished by changing the view of your scheduling software of choice. With daily planning, you can structure your workday so that your most challenging tasks are scheduled during your peak productivity hours. Weekly planning enables you to confirm all your scheduled meetings and take note of upcoming deadlines. With monthly planning, you can review your personal KPIs using data tracked by your scheduling software and make adjustments to plan for an even more productive month ahead. In addition to personal planning, your scheduling software is key to coordinating well with others. Leading a team, for example, will require the balancing of a lot of different roles, tasks and deadlines. A content manager can look at scheduling software and see that a new blog post is due tomorrow morning by writer X, followed by a revision from an in-house editor by the end of the work day. The manager and the rest of the team will know exactly whom to talk to at every stage of the project, keeping confusion and miscommunication to a minimum. MORE FOR YOU 5 Ways Successful People Enjoy The Outdoors During The Work Day Fintech Is The Next Frontier For HR Tech Provide Irrefutable Evidence To Your Insurance Adjuster With The Best Dash Cams Balance Your Personal and Professional Life As important as your career might be, nothing should come before your family and yourself. In fact, a Deloitte study showed that companies that promote work-life balance saw twice the productivity from their employees. Your scheduling software will be put to best use when it promotes work-life balance. Use your scheduling software to prioritize family time. Plan dates with your spouse and add your kids’ sporting events and dance recitals to your online calendar. These events should be non-negotiable, and you can make sure you cement them into your schedule by using the same software you use for organizing your business. Work-life balance is much easier to achieve when you leave work at work. To make this happen, use scheduling tactics that help you unlock your full productivity while on the clock. One approach is the Pomodoro technique, where you schedule your work into small blocks of time dedicated to a single task with short breaks in between. Using this scheduling method will enable you to increase your focus throughout the day and finish more tasks in the same amount of time, leaving less work to take home. Geek Out With Color Coding A personalized color-coding system allows you to decipher your schedule with just a quick glance. Each of the activities in your schedule can be designated its own color. For example, red can be used to indicate client meetings that you just can’t miss. Yellow can be devoted to longer-range tasks, such as strategizing or reporting. Blue can be used for family time or other personal responsibilities and so forth. The more quickly you can identify your scheduling priorities, the faster you can start completing tasks. Once you get used to your color code, one look at your daily schedule will tell you where you need to be and at what time. A flash of red will notify you of a board meeting coming up that you need to prepare for. A trace of blue at the end of your schedule will remind you that you can’t stay late at the office tonight, regardless of the event specifics. Research shows that the use of visual cues can help viewers grasp needed information more efficiently, so go ahead and colorful. Set Reminders Creating an event in your schedule isn’t always enough. You’re not taking advantage of everything scheduling software has to offer if you’re not setting reminders to go along with important events. Taking a few seconds to set up reminders for each meeting or appointment can be the safety net you need to ensure your schedule runs smoothly. For starters, the reminders you set will act as a precaution in case your memory fails you or you lose track of paper notes. Nothing is worse than missing an important meeting or leaving the wrong impression by showing up late. Leverage your scheduling software to ensure that’s never a concern. Another purpose of reminders is to help you prepare for upcoming events. A reminder set half an hour before an important presentation gives you a final opportunity to compose yourself and make sure you have all your materials ready. Check In With Others There’s nothing productive about preparing for and going to a meeting where the other person doesn’t show. Effective scheduling requires both parties to be in sync. Even if you do everything right, there’s always a chance that someone who committed to a meeting will arrive late or fail to show at all. All your planning and organizing efforts will have gone to waste. You can avoid this by sending reminders to those you have made plans with in advance. Most scheduling software programs allow you to set up reminder messages to send to others. To maximize your productivity, you can craft the perfect reminder once and use it for all engagements thereafter. You won’t have to worry about peers or clients missing meetings anymore, and you won’t have to write a custom email each time. You can also share a meeting agenda or scheduling link to enhance collaboration between you and your counterpart. It’s time to stop using your scheduling software only for the bare minimum. This Swiss Army knife of software tools has an array of helpful features that you should be using to increase your productivity. To make the most of your precious time, get started today.
  12. Most of the basic hardware was already known and is merely being re-affirmed here, like the Snapdragon 888 chipset, up to 16GB of RAM (with 6GB and 12GB variants also potentially a thing) and up to 256GB of storage. Apparently, of the UFS 3.1 variety. The display on the Zenfone 8 was already know to have a 5.92-inch diagonal and FullHD+ resolution. As per the new info, it will also sport 120Hz refresh rate and will be manufactured by Samsung, using the trendy E4 AMOLED technology. Covering it - Gorilla Glass Victus. We aren't exactly sure what materials the rest of the body is made from, but an educated guess would be a metal middle frame and an additional Gorilla Glass sheet of some sorts for the curved back. Another recent rumor also mentions IP68 certification. As per the leaked specs, the body measures 148 x 68.5 x 8.9mm and tips the scale at 169 grams. That includes the 4,000 mAh battery, capable of up to 30W charging. Also crammed inside the fairly-compact body - a stereo speaker setup, as well as a 3.5mm audio jack, with Hi-Fi audio output, in typical Asus fashion. Apparently, there are also three mics on the Zenfone 8, leveraged for OZO audio recording. We can hance expect pretty solid video capture performance from the main 64MP IMX686 camera on the phone, as well as the 12MP ultrawide snapper. Apparently, video capture can go up to 8K, with 4K@120fps slow-mo also an option. Like we've already seen from renders, the Zenfone 8 only has two rear cameras. As per the new leaked specs - both equipped with EIS and if we are reading this correctly - autofocus on the ultrawide, so it can double as a macro snapper. Neat! Finally, some other details are also mentioned, like Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6 support, courtesy of the Snapdragon 888 chipset. Also, 5G and an FM radio receiver. Not too shabby for a compact flagship. No word on pricing yet, but then again, the announcement event is just around the corner anyway, so we won't have to wait long.

  15. The effect of technology, on the beauty and lifestyle industry, has exponentially increased its market share - and then some! As of 2020, the beauty and lifestyle market segmentation has been valued at over $532 billion dollars. Adding over two billion digital buyers to the list, the beauty and lifestyle industry has seemingly reached its golden years. In the coming years, without a shadow of a doubt, the market value is bound to reach new heights. Modifications in technology has opened-up the beauty and lifestyle market to a world of vast and quite often unfamiliar opportunities. In fact, over the last 5 years, beyond digital payment gateways, customer relationship management, and global marketing, technology has been the catalyst by helping quadruple the market value— currently reaching an annual growth rate of 27%. The digital revolution in the luxury retail market is taking flight: In June 2017, luxury brand leader LVMH launched its online retail store named 24 Sevres. In addition, the global powerhouse named their e-commerce portal after their brick and mortar store - which is situated in the heart of Paris. Luxury fashion noteworthy players such as Far-fetch, Yoox, and Net-A-Porter have all seemingly taken significant roles in implementing the digital revolution to new heights. In fact, they many times invest tremendously in premium content and technology— to cover wider audiences and market share. More to the point, the beauty and luxury market is perfectly aligned to E-commerce. The reason for the alignment, when promoted online, is that there is a wider scope of potential customers and brand awareness. MORE FOR YOU Bitcoin Price Prediction: Why Bitcoin Could Rocket To $400,000 In 2021 API Stack: The Billion Dollar Opportunities Redefining Infrastructure, Services & Platforms Breakout Smartphone Quarter: Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo All Grow More Than 40% Recently, I had a short yet exclusive interview with Jun Li, Founder of ONTology, a company that addresses itself as the blockchain for self-sovereign ID and data, (Their OScore product launched the very first credit scoring system in blockchain history. Another great feat is their partnership with Daimler Mobility, parent of Mercedes Benz) on how technologies like Blockchain influences today’s ever changing fashion beauty and luxury market. Joseph DeAcetis: In your words, how is blockchain technology aiding the fashion and beauty luxury market today? Jun Li: There are a multitude of ways blockchain affects the luxury market. With all premium markets, such as beauty or luxury, the verification of authenticity is of vital importance. You would be able to track the manufacturer and verify the item you are transacting with through the power of blockchain technology. But more importantly, you would be able to trace and verify the supply chain process. In a field like luxury, changes are being made constantly, especially towards a greener, eco-friendly solution. You can track this change from a raw material standpoint, moving along the supply chain until the bag is sitting on a shelf in your Louis Vuitton store. This gives luxury brands a new processing method of signaling to their users where they stand on key issues revolving around raw materials and the supply chain. In addition, we have included a decentralized identity layer protection for luxury NFT’s as we envision this space to grow exponentially soon. It allows companies to quickly migrate and store data on our blockchain through our data attestation service which reduces their data storage fees. JD: Talk to Forbes about whether or not advancements in technology will signal change in the beauty, lifestyle, and luxury markets? If so, what role does Ontology play in this light? Jun Li: The beauty of decentralized identity being a core principle at Ontology is that it can be extrapolated and applied in a variety of fields, including the luxury market. For starters, luxury is about taste and personal preferences. It is a form of signaling, or more accurately, a form of signaling your identity. Through decentralization, we can attribute your taste in luxury and beauty markets to who you truly are — your identity. In terms of application, being able to track accurately your history of purchases reveals a certain part of you, while protecting your actual identities such as your name, weight, eye colour, or other elements that get biased in the beauty space. Imagine Sephora or Louis Vuitton knowing who you are at an identity level, without being able to access your sensitive data points. They would be able to better accustom what your luxury and beauty needs are, such as which toner is more suited for you based on previous transactions made, rather than just how you are feeling at the moment. This removes stigma and biases affected on a retail level and instead allows them to better accommodate you on an identity level while having it protected through decentralization. Also, our data attestation service can be utilized for fast and cheap alternatives. High-tech is giving the beauty and luxury industries a complete makeover Technology is constantly evolving, and so is consumer demand for speed and efficient service. In the near future, businesses will need to find more efficient ways to satisfy consumer demand. In an industry with an estimated worth over $532 billion, the beauty industry has been cautious in keeping up with technological advancements. And keeping up is what it’s all about in the 2020’s. Given all technology that’s available today, there hasn’t been too much penetration in the beauty market by advanced technology such as AI. But all that is about to change. As tech-forward companies are implementing AI and other novel technology solutions to promote E-commerce businesses. Novomind is a tech company leveraging intelligent software to promote e-commerce brands in the luxury sector. “Our e-commerce software is designed to enable the display of such details that make the aesthetic difference, such as large product images, 3-D videos, detailed product information, and content links for storytelling. Visitors immediately notice if a website is of high quality, and thus get an entirely different feeling when browsing through it compared to an average e-commerce store,” Sylvia Tantzen, CMO of Novomind AG, explained. AI can take insane amounts of data and turn it into bite-sized, digestible, easy to understand relevant information. It can successfully streamline strenuous processes and solve complex problems. With the help of AI, E-commerce fashion retail processes can be automated. Things like chatbots, churn predictions, product recommendation, better understanding customer preference, offering personalized solutions, enabling virtual product trials and manufacturing customer-centric products and a host of others are all possible now because of AI. FinTech: creating bigger opportunities for lifestyle brands There is without a doubt an upward trend in the use of mobile smartphones to shop for luxury items. According to Mckinsey, at least 95% of consumers of luxury are equipped with mobile phones. Moreover, in some countries as much as 100%. Thus, marketers understand that if they will dominate the market there has to be a way to ride on technology’s influence. Innovators like Globalytics Tech Research have seen this opportunity and have provided online shoppers with the opportunity to pay for items through financial technology and AI. GTR is a fintech company that connects its clients with global service providers using its STAR technology. The company sells its services on a subscription model (SaaS) and invests the pool of the profit into new opportunities, which is then distributed back to clients. How tech will change beauty and lifestyle for good I am amazed when I see luxury brands transitioning into modernity both in style and in business. Another tech company leveraging decentralized technology is Uberstate. This tech brand provides more than a wealth management system. Uberstate uses its mobile app to provide users services like wealth calculators and smart wallets for their funds which they can spend anywhere which enables users to monitor and control their digital assets and cryptocurrencies within the decentralized market. So, it is only a matter of time before traditional luxury brands will have to embrace the tech world and stop seeing tech innovations, most especially E-commerce as a major threat to their brand story and the production of contraband products. If they remain in the market and maintain their brand authority, the only choice they have right now is to integrate online selling, AI features, and digitized payments into their strategy to keep up with the increasing demands of the market.
  16. RAMALLAH, Friday, May 7, 2021 (WAFA) – Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, today blamed the Israeli government for the ongoing escalation in all of the occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank. He blamed the Israeli government for the recent assaults on Palestinian families facing eviction in the occupied Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, as well as the fatal shooting earlier today of two Palestinian young men at a checkpoint northwest of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Abu Rudeineh said these latest violations, beside the illegal settlement construction, create tensions on the ground and violate all the resolutions of the international community. "We hold the Israeli government responsible for this escalation and its repercussions, and we call on the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people," said Abu Rudeineh in a statement. Abu Rudeineh urged the US administration to pressure Israel to stop its attacks "so that matters do not reach a stage that cannot be controlled."
  17. Premium Android phones are getting extended software support lately and Oppo’s Find X3 series is the latest proof. Today, Oppo confirmed to Android Planet that the Find X3 series will get an extra year of software support bringing the total to three. Up until this point, Oppo generally provided two years of software updates but now phones like the Find X3 Pro will get an extra year of security patches. The new reports also mentions that Oppo is looking to extend software support to four years though it’s still testing whether that is a viable option. All Find X3 series phones are viable for at least two Android version updates meaning they should get the Android 12 and Android 13 updates at some point in time.
  18. mid a new IT upgrade cycle, data center and networking hardware firm Arista Networks (NYSE: ANET) is back in growth mode. While it was once known as a high-flying growth stock, this time around Arista looks more like a reasonable value, especially after its first-quarter 2021 earnings update was released on Tuesday. The chip shortage takes a small toll Arista's Q1 financials continued the rebound the company started late in 2020 after a slow couple of years. Revenue was nearly $668 million, a 28% year-over-year increase, and free cash flow was also up 29% to $248 million. Management said to expect sales to increase about another 27% year over year in the second quarter to at least $675 million. If Arista continues on this track, it's on pace to exceed its all-time-high sales record from back in 2019. In spite of the strong showing, Q1 wasn't perfect. As with other tech hardware companies, Arista is being affected by the global chip shortage, driven by both healthy customer demand as data centers and networks get updated and also supply constraints from Arista's contract manufacturing partners. CEO Jayshree Ullal said on the earnings call that the chip supply has never been so constrained for the company. Specifically, some order lead times for certain components are a whole year out. Ullal continued by saying that the "supply chain will remain a pain point for the balance of this year as a result of all these shortages." While manufacturing shortfalls amid the pandemic have meant Arista has left some sales on the table this quarter, there's another way to look at this problem. Arista isn't alone in dealing with the global supply shortfall, so it's unlikely customers will simply shift their purchasing to one of its competitors. Instead, they're going to have to plan their projects accordingly and wait patiently. This creates a nice backlog of orders for Arista that could help it remain in strong growth mode well into next year. Plus, new networking technology like 400G will begin shipping in the second half of this year to help businesses' data centers handle the increased flow of information they're experiencing. With its strong portfolio of solutions spanning hardware itself, data center management, and security software, Arista is well-positioned to capture plenty of new customers this year and next. Why Arista stock is a top buy In spite of its supply issues, Arista stock is on the cusp of another run higher. Cloud computing is a secular trend that is showing no signs of slowing down, and though Arista was hit by first the U.S.-China trade war and then the pandemic, its growth story is far from over. After the last update, Arista trades for 32 times trailing 12-month free cash flow -- a metric that will improve this year as the company laps depressed financial results from the worst of the pandemic lockdowns last spring and summer. It's always developing new use cases for its product and software portfolio with customers and is well-positioned for further expansion. The balance sheet showed cash and equivalents of $3.03 billion and no debt at the end of March. Management said to expect growth rates to decelerate headed into the second half of 2021, but to nevertheless anticipate full-year financials to be substantially higher than last year. This small data center design and management firm is a top play on the booming cloud computing market. With growth back in double digits again, Arista Networks stock still looks like a long-term value right now.
  19. Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand might be the best part of Cyberpunk 2077. What other celebrities have lent their likenesses to the world of gaming? As video games and home consoles started to gain mainstream po[CENSORED]rity in the early 1980s, Hollywood began to see a potentially huge new market they could tap into. Even before the first big video game movies like Super Mario Bros (1993) or Mortal Kombat (1995), big name celebrities were already marketing games by having their likenesses appear within the game itself. This tradition dates as far back as 1984 with Bruce Lee on the Atari 8-bit family, and continues to present day with Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077. Clearly, celebrities allowing their likenesses in games is a trend that hasn’t slowed down yet. With almost four decades to cover, who are the biggest celebrities who have appeared in video games? While last year’s release of Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t go as smoothly as gamers had hoped, many of them agree Keanu Reeves' portrayal of Johnny Silverhand was certainly a silver lining. Reeves' appearance as this ex-military vet and rockerboy with a temper met with critical acclaim. The John Wick star played a huge role in marketing the game as well, with Reeves making appearances across various media to promote Cyberpunk 2077's release. While Johnny Silverhand was Reeves' most recent in-game appearance, it certainly isn't his first. The actor's likeness (and various characters) have previously been used in Fortnite (2019), Payday 2 (2014), Constantine (2005), and The Matrix: Path of Neo (2005). An argument can be made that Shaq's likeness has appeared in just about every NBA-licensed game since his league debut in 1992. However, a lesser-known title will forever be associated with the four-time NBA champion. In 1994, Shaquille O’Neil starred in his own 2D fighting game, Shaq-Fu. The game follows Shaq as he gets teleported into an alternate dimension on his way to a charity basketball game in Tokyo. There, he faces the task of rescuing a young boy from an evil mummy. The title met with mixed reviews and consistently ranks as one of the worst games of all-time. Despite this, the franchise was revived in 2018 in the form of a beat ‘em up sequel called Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn. Snoop Dogg has managed to remain a household name for almost two decades. Since then, he's explored all avenues of media and marketing, including video games. The Long Beach rapper has most notably appeared in True Crime: Streets of LA (2003) as an unlockable character, and in Def Jam: Fight For NY (2004) as the antagonist in the game's story mode. Finally, he appears as an unlockable wide receiver in Madden NFL 20's Superstar These four are best known for their roles in the Jackass TV series and movies. Steve-O, Wee Man, Phil Margera, and Bam Margera's brand relies on comic mischief and association with skateboard culture. This made them the perfect candidates for a Tony Hawk game, especially at the peak of the franchise's success in the mid 2000s. While all four characters were unlockable and playable in Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Bam made his first appearance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. In fact, he has has appeared in seven of the games to-date. Being no stranger to collaborations, Fortnite jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with successful DJ and EDM Producer Marshmello. Best known for his collaborations with artists like Selena Gomez and the late Juice WRLD, Marshmello's unique aesthetic — including his glowing white helmet — fit into the Fortnite universe like a glove. The Marshmello outfit is part of Fortnite's Icon series. Players could purchase it in a set with other Marshmello cosmetics beginning on February 1, 2019. It's made 5 more appearances since then. Plenty of fans recognize comedian, actor, and host Drew Carey. He's the current host of The Price is Right, former host of Whose Line is it Anyway?, and star of The Drew Carey Show. Back in 2001, Carey was a secret unlockable character in The Sims: House Party expansion pack. Carey wasn't available as a playable sim. Rather, an NPC bearing his likeness would pull up in a limousine after the player threw a successful party. To summon him, players had to reach a party score of at least 55, and the party had to last at least 135 minutes. At the height of 50 Cent's career in the mid-2000's, the NYC rapper sank his teeth into the growing world of gaming. His title, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, released in 2005. This action game featured 50 Cent in a story loosely based on his life, where he searched for vengeance against people who tried to have him murdered. The game also featured appearances from Eminem, Dr. Dre, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, and Tony Yayo. 50 Cent would also appear in a third-person shooter published by THQ called 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand (2009). He was also one of the selectable fighters in Def Jam: Fight for NY (2004). Legendary martial artist, actor, and director Bruce Lee was among the first celebrities to appear in a video game. With the self-titled platformer Bruce Lee (1984) for the Atari 8-bit family, fans could put themselves into the martial artist's shoes. They guided him through a series of chambers, fighting enemies such as ninjas. Lee would appear in several other games going forward. One such title was Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1994) for the Sega Genesis based on the biopic from Universal Pictures. Another was Bruce Lee: Return of the Legend (2003) for the Game Boy Advance. Much like Marshmello, Fortnite's collaboration with Travis Scott met with praise from fans and acclaim from critics. Players could purchase his costume and accompanying cosmetics in the Fortnite item shop. On top of that, the Fortnite team also created a live virtual concert event to tie everything together. The concert featured a larger-than-life version of Travis with all kinds of special effects that could only be replicated in a virtual space. Such effects involved submerging the crowd underwater, Travis turning into a cyborg, rollercoasters around the map, and setting the surroundings on fire. Many fans would agree Grand Theft Auto is one of the only gaming franchises that could house two real-life comedy powerhouses in a game without skipping a beat. Both Ricky Gervais and Katt Williams voice fictional versions of themselves as stand-up comedians in Grand Theft Auto IV (2008). In the game, they perform at the Split Sides Club. The GTA franchise is no stranger to raunchy comedy, and the two didn't shy away. They contributed bits about weed, short people, obesity, and more.
  21. Ben Cummings doesn't have an alarm clock. His rooster Tim's crowing carries easily through the thin walls of his camp, signalling the start of a new day. The 27-year-old will be working on building a greenhouse, feeding dozens of chickens and rabbits and tending to his vegetable garden today. It's all part of the homesteading way of life. "It is just a lot of hard work. It's definitely not for the faint of heart," he said. Cummings lives in the village of Benton, N.B., about 25 kilometres south of Woodstock. It's tucked away in a clearing, far into the woods of central New Brunswick. A wooden covered bridge crossing the Eel River is the only real landmark in town. There's no store, no gas station and weak internet. But for Cummings and his girlfriend, it was the perfect spot to settle and venture into the homesteading lifestyle, which entails producing your own food and becoming self-sufficient. They purchased a simple home by the river last August. The Benton homesteader is one of hundreds of people drastically changing their lives in New Brunswick. The pandemic is driving people — many from outside the province — to buy up large parcels of land and try to become self-sufficient. Part of New Brunswick's appeal is the relative affordability of land here. Many have no experience with animals or farming, but the learning curve isn't deterring them from producing their own food and living off the land. It's a lifestyle catching attention on Instagram and YouTube, where many young homesteaders are sharing their lives. More than 6,000 people have joined a New Brunswick support group online to sell goats or offer tips on building a chicken coop. High demand for supplies Luke Coleman, who has a homestead in Hampton with his wife, Jill, has seen this trending lifestyle first-hand. The couple sells livestock to people starting out, and offers advice. "What we think COVID did was it pushed a lot of people who were already kind of teetering on the fence," he said. "It was the push that a lot of people needed to kind of just say, 'No, we're doing it now. We have to do it.'" Coleman's place, which is called Belding Hill Farms, has a variety of animals, including pigs, chickens, horses, cows, sheep and goats. The homestead also offers educational tours, which have been po[CENSORED]r this year. The demand for livestock has never been this high. There are about 140 people on a waiting list for chickens. Piglets are being sold before they're even born. Normally, the Colemans need to scramble to sell them all. This year, Luke Coleman said they haven't even been advertising. "We could've sold a thousand piglets probably. It's crazy," he said. Potting soil is also hard to find. Butchers are booked up. Supplies are going up in price. This has encouraged some homesteaders to become even more resourceful and self-sufficient. The Colemans want people to know homesteading can also be tough. While they document life on the farm through social media, they try to share good and bad moments so people get a full picture. 'Nothing more rewarding' An hour and a half drive east, Jacob and Jillian Fenwick are expanding their homestead in Sackville. Jacob is from the Ottawa area and Jillian is originally from Kentucky. The couple moved to New Brunswick specifically for this way of life. The Fenwicks have 17 laying hens, a rooster, a big garden and fruit trees. They grow raspberries, blueberries and cranberries, The couple is waiting to get honeybees and hope to add a dairy cow and sheep in the future. Jillian Fenwick values having a direct connection to her food. "There's nothing more rewarding than being able to pull out a jar of tomatoes that you canned in the middle of January," she said. "And to still have them and for them to still taste good and to be able to share that with other people." The lifestyle also appealed to Jacob Fenwick. He said the weather and moon play a significant role in his day-to-day life. "You get to live in tune with the world," he said. "You know the moment the grass starts to turn green, you know every new flower that comes up, you know any herbs that come up and what they're used for, and what wild food you can harvest." Jillian Fenwick said once you become accustomed to homegrown food, there's no going back. "It's hard to buy a tomato from the grocery store, because it's just not as good," she said. 'I'll probably do it forever' At Cummings's Benton homestead, the loudest noise is the sound of the river's current and the clucking chickens wandering around the property. Rabbits wander around a fenced-in pen. Cummings had long been interested in producing his own food after feeling unwell from eating store-bought meat. "I started down a journey of why certain foods are better for me, and make me feel better," he said. "I wanted to know and have respect for my meat." When the pandemic hit, Cummings wanted to have a secure food supply and began researching how to grow vegetables and raise chickens. Over the past nine months, the appeal hasn't worn off. He plans to continue and has a goal of being completely off-grid. "If you grow a pepper yourself, you have not only the dedication that you put into it, but it just tastes better, because it has the soil you grew it in," Cummings said. "I just want to have enough that I can survive, pay my bills, pay my taxes and then I'll be happy. So I'll probably do it forever."
  22. Turkey's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party spokesman denounced Israel's occupation of Palestine on Thursday and voiced support for Palestinians facing violence. Omer Celik said he "strongly condemns" the fact that Israel is again extorting the homes of Palestinians and hastening the occupation during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. "We stand by our Palestinian sisters and brothers against extortion, occupation and persecution," he said on Twitter, noting that after extorting homes, Israel forcefully evicts its owners. "These are happening on this day, on this earth," he said. Palestinian territories, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem, have been under Israeli occupation since 1967. Like Turkey, and much of the international community, the EU does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over those areas.
  23. Tech companies take notice: The copyrightability of software application programming interfaces — or APIs — is on shaky constitutional ground. Google LLC v. Oracle America Inc., the most closely watched copyright case in recent memory, called on the U.S. Supreme Court to determine whether software APIs are copyrightable and, if so, whether Google’s admitted copying of parts of the Java API constituted fair use. In its 6-2 decision on April 5, the court neatly sidestepped the question of copyrightability, finding that Google’s actions constituted fair use regardless of whether the Java API was copyrightable. However, the skepticism in the court’s analysis is hard to miss and should give pause to future parties seeking to enforce copyrights on software APIs. In finding fair use, the court looked to the four factors set out in Section 107 of the Copyright Act, which seek to balance copyright holders’ interests with society’s interest in the reproduction and transformation of scientific and artistic content. While the court’s analysis purports to apply narrowly to the facts of this case, it does suggest broader applicability to software APIs in general. Nature of copyrighted work Here, the “work” in question was the “declaring code,” which provides the “interface” element of an API. The declaring code determines the organizational hierarchy of methods and tells calling code how to invoke them. In contrast, “implementing code” provides a method’s internal functionality, and a “method call” is a particular instance of utilizing or “calling” a method. Google copied the declaring code from the Java API but wrote its own implementing code tailored to the Android smartphone platform. Likening declaring code to a filing system, the court found that “declaring code is, if copyrightable at all, further than are most computer programs (such as implementing code) from the core of copyright.” With such skeptical language, the court appears to have walked right up to the line of finding declaring code to be uncopyrightable, but it ultimately declined to step across. Purpose, character of use Google copied the Java API in order to make the Android platform more readily accessible to Java programmers. Because they were already familiar with Java, programmers could write applications for Android without needing to learn an entirely new API. Copying the Java API to Android thus facilitated the creation of new products that were not available on non-mobile platforms. Bringing that ease of creation to a smartphone platform, the court found, constituted a “transformative” use that was not outweighed by the commercial nature of Google’s endeavor. The skepticism in the court’s analysis is hard to miss and should give pause to future parties seeking to enforce copyrights on software APIs. That kind of transformation does not occur when a company copies a competitor’s API on the same platform. Therefore, if software APIs are copyrightable, then this factor could limit the scope of permissible fair use considerably. Amount, substantiality of portion used The declaring code that Google copied was a very small portion of the Java programming language: about 11,500 lines of code, constituting 0.4 percent of the total when implementing code is included. In addition, in view of the court’s analysis of the “nature” of declaring code, the copied lines of code were insubstantial in comparison to the implementing code. Google only copied what was needed to achieve the “transformative” purpose of attracting Java developers to the Android platform. Those distinctions are not unique to the Java API. Given that declaring code is a small fraction of the total code in any sizeable project, we should expect this factor to weigh in favor of fair use in nearly any case. Market effects Here, the court highlighted trial evidence suggesting that Sun (Oracle’s predecessor) was not competing with Google in the smartphone space. “Google’s Android platform was part of a distinct (and more advanced) market than Java software,” the court found. In fact, bringing the Java API to Android might have benefitted Sun by encouraging even more developers to learn the Java programming language. Meanwhile, foreclosing Google from porting the Java API to Android would amount to “a lock limiting the future creativity of new programs” by programmers who had invested their time in learning the Java API. That latter argument reflects a reality of the software industry as a whole: Denying a programmer access to the APIs they already know will limit their creative abilities, at least until they are able to learn a new API that is available on the target platform. Prior to the court’s decision, many in the software industry were concerned that a finding against copyrightability would discourage companies from developing new APIs that could then be copied by competitors. Others feared that a finding for copyrightability would be the death knell for open source projects that replicate commercial APIs. By avoiding the copyrightability question altogether and deciding the case narrowly on the specific facts of the case, the court seems to have averted either outcome. However, the court’s analysis reveals healthy skepticism toward copyrightability of software APIs generally, and its application of the fair use factors suggests that future claimants face a potentially fruitless uphill battle.
  24. MURFREESBORO – Not satisfied. That’s what three Game Christian Academy seniors echoed after the Lions captured their first Division II-A Middle Region District 3 championship on Wednesday in a familiar setting at Middle Tennessee Christian School. GCA clinched the district title with a 5-3 win over MTCS and will host Davidson Academy in the region tournament Friday. Wednesday’s field was also the same place the Lions last played with fallen teammate Grant Solomon in the state semifinals in 2019. His No. 11 jersey remains in the dugout at each game and the team – and opponents – have honored Solomon all year. Baseball Photo Gallery – Grace Christian Academy at Middle Tennessee Christian School The Grace Christian Academy baseball team claimed the Division II-A Middle Region District 3 championship on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at Middle Tennessee Christian School in Murfreesboro with a 5-3 victory. “After last year’s canceled season, losing one of our best friends, well, more than a best friend – a brother of ours – winning this district is emotional, but it's just the start,” said GCA senior catcher Blake Barton. “This is honoring (Grant) in the best way we can and I’m proud of these guys for that.” “We’re not satisfied just winning the district,” added fellow senior Luke Gill. “We’re completely dedicated to going all the way. We will get right back at it on Friday.” Brock Arender went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs for GCA, whose deep bullpen worked through several jams. Freshman Hudson Barton was credited with the win, pitching two innings and surrendering just one hit, while Parker Wyatt entered on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and needed just nine pitches to pick up the save. The Lions broke a 3-3 tie when Wyatt drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth. Jordan Carter took a high ball to the helmet to load the bases after a Gill single and Trace Phillips walk prior. However, MTCS right fielder Brock Culpepper closed the top of the frame with a double play by snagging a fly out and rocketing a throw to home. As GCA coach Brad Myers said, Wednesday “wasn’t the prettiest game” for his team, but the Lions still were able to persevere. “We found a way to win,” said Myers, who was named the district co-Coach of the Year. The veteran coach said his team has been building confidence in tight games this year, and despite a couple plays not going their way, the Lions didn’t fall into the pressure Wednesday. MTCS was gifted several free bases on two balks and reached on two errors as well as a catcher’s interference, but GCA limited the damage. “It’s been a process to get to this point and kind of overcame those plays when they happen,” said Myers, whose team opened 3-6-1 but has won 22 of 24 games. “It comes with the environment these guys have created.” The Lions ended the sixth with a double play of their own when Carter snagged a line drive to center and hit Wyatt at second base to force the out with a Cougar base running error. Arender smacked a double after a fly out to open the seventh and scored on a grounder from Jackson Sleeper, who reached on an error for the 5-3 advantage. “We knew we were going to have to play perfect baseball to come out on top and there were a couple plays that didn’t go our way,” said Cougars coach Jamie Carver. "Credit to GCA, but that was two good baseball teams out there today." MTCS will host Clarksville Academy Friday. Arender drove in two runs in the first with a single to right. The senior said the Lions have been working on attacking early, especially on the heels of a 5-3 win over Columbia Academy on Monday. They tipped Battle Ground Academy twice in a double-header last week to open the postseason, including scoring four runs in each of the second and third innings. “We wanted to get on that fastball early,” Arender said. “Being a pitcher myself, I know how it feels to have guys come out and score runs on you, so we kind of understand how we want and need to come out early and pound some runs in.” The Cougars strung together three consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 before Phillips laid down a bunt to score Sleeper in the third and extend the GCA lead to 3-1. However, MTCS scored on a dropped third strike in the fourth and tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The elder Barton said GCA turned to its “two-tap” mentality to overcome the Cougars as they chipped away. “We do the same thing, it’s just two taps, two taps anywhere on your body to help you refocus,” Barton said. “I think we kind of did that as a team to finish the game out.” Gill, Arender, Wyatt, Carter and Blake Barton all earned All-District nods. When the team was presented with the district championship trophy, there was little celebration beyond team photos. “That’s these guys,” Myers said. “They’re not celebrating and are ready to just get back to work ... They want to get back to that state tournament."
