  2. Well, you made it through 2020, and now you have to prepare for 2021. Last year, most of us scrambled to cope with every new historic curveball lofted our way. In the food and lifestyle arenas, 2020 was marked by shake ups in supply chains, online ordering, and new demands on local food systems. We also saw novel pop culture trends enter the zeitgeistā€”from obsessions with sourdough to #cottagecore to TikTok. While many are looking to 2021 with trepidation, we now have nearly 12 months of our new normal to learn from, which means we can be better prepared for whatā€™s to come, personally and professionally. Here are the top 7 trends anyone working in the food and lifestyle industries should be paying attention to in 2021. Salty snack including peanuts, potato chips and pretzels. 1. Flavor fatigue Exhaustion, anxiety and stress are limiting peopleā€™s interest in complex flavors, according to new research published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology. ā€œHedonic appreciation of food...varies with the degree to which consumers are mentally depleted,ā€ the studyā€™s authors write, concluding that ā€œcognitive depletion reduces consumer enjoyment of complex-flavored (but not simple-flavored) foods.ā€ This finding is reflected in the latest food trends: sales of salty, familiar snacks like potato chips are up as are sales of sweet treats like chocolateā€”90% of U.S. shoppers purchased some form of chocolate in the first few months of the pandemic. Food for Climate League found similar findings in our fall menu communications research sprints, with U.S. respondents in particular gravitating toward familiar and simple dish descriptions. Recognizing the desire for comfort and familiar flavors, Dunkinā€™ Donuts brought back their fall favorite pumpkin donuts and coffee several months early. 85% of consumers say that eating their favorite snacks makes them feel ā€˜normalā€™ and nearly half say that eating them makes them feel happy, according to Frito-Layā€™s annual snacking index. ā€œSimple foods with a single ā€˜flavor dimensionā€™...donā€™t take as much brain power or comprehension as dishes consisting of multiple flavor components (such as sweet, salty, bitter),ā€ explains the behavior insights agency Canvas8 in their own analysis of what they call ā€œflavor fatigue.ā€ ā€œThe more mentally drained a person is, the harder it is for them to appreciate more complex tastes,ā€ they conclude. As many of the stressors of 2020 are likely to continue in this new yearā€”think: overwhelming personal health and safety concerns, economic strife, content inundation, home schooling, marches for equal rightsā€”those in the food and beverage industry should focus in on simple, approachable and familiar flavors that will appeal to our emotionally overwhelmed world. A middle-aged woman in a yoga pose in front of a laptop. Remote work at home. 2. Mental health awareness Prior to 2020, the world already faced record high rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, in large part led by the Millennial and Z generations, but in 2020, our mental health was taxed to a new degree. One-in-four young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 say they considered suicide in the spring of 2020, notes the United States Centers for Disease Control, specifically citing the pandemic as a leading culprit. Nearly one-third of the 5,412 survey respondents, across all age groups, said they had symptoms of anxiety or depression, and over a quarter reported trauma and stress-related disorders because of the pandemic. Those under 40 believe that caring for oneā€™s mental health is just as important as caring for oneā€™s physical health and discussions of mental health are becoming more open and less stigmatized, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z. Some of the most po[CENSORED]r pop stars and platforms of 2020 openly address mental health issues, be it Chloe x Halle or Bilie Eilish or Snap. In the face of a year that challenged our wellbeingā€”both physically and mentallyā€”many are looking to brands to help them lighten the load. For brands, this means a focus on affinity over awareness is key. ā€œPost-COVID, people are looking for mission-driven brands that help them navigate the current situation,ā€ writes Emily Tang, VP of Innovation and Insights at Datassential. ā€œTheyā€™re attracted to brands with clearly stated objectives and values - to provide comfort, offer a solution to a problem, or to combat current issues.ā€ LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 03: Models pose during the Oxfam Sustainable Fashion Show at Oxfam Shop 3. Sustainability as table stakes Early in the pandemic, many made the assumption that, with our personal health at risk, public attention on the climate crisis would wane. That prediction turned out to be mightily wrong. 2020 was a banner year for the environmental movement. In the U.S., consumption of plant-based foods rose and all signs point to this trend continuing in 2021. A survey by menu research firm Datassential found that 58% of U.S. respondents in July 2020 said they want to increase their consumption of plant-based foods and 33% want to specifically increase their consumption of plant-based animal protein substitutes, with many asserting that plant-based eating is both healthier and better for the environment. The survey also found that 31% want to decrease their red meat intake. Across the pond, the pandemic has accelerated the uptake of veganism. A quarter of British 21- to 30-year-olds say that the COVID-19 pandemic has made veganism more appealing to them, found Mintel. In fact, this fall, students at Oxford voted to ban lamb and beef from most of campus eateries in an effort to make the university more environmentally-friendly. During the past year, around the world, people adopted many new sustainable eating behaviors such as wasting less food, which is one of the most impactful actions for tackling the climate crisis. The rapid shift in grocery availability gave many people a new focus on using all of what they have. The FMI U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends COVID-19 Tracker from the month of May shows that 51% of consumers say theyā€™ll be better in the future (versus before the pandemic) about not letting food they have at home go to waste. The eco-conscious mindset has also infiltrated the fashion, retail, and travel markets, with clothing and home goods companies launching new products with recycled, organic, circular materials, and hoteliers and cities alike are integrating sustainability standards into their business models. Skift Researchā€™s 2020 Hospitality Innovation award went to Sensible Sustainable Solutions by Bensley, an open-sourced guide on integrating sustainable design into architecture and interior design for hotels. In 2020, the concept of sustainable fashion, home goods, and travel also progressed beyond the things we buy and shifted to a focus on what we donā€™t purchase, or, in the case of travel, where we donā€™t go. Fashion brands have begun to taut their long-term wearability as a sustainable bonus. Consumer packaged goods companies are launching reusable containers, bulk, and responsible sourcing to all limit waste, and often, cost. When it comes to travel, some destinations are noting that, in order to maintain the sustainability of their cities, the number of visitors each year must be limited. Over-tourism has entered the list of sustainable travel concerns. Other issues like fair wages and gender equality are also a part of the sustainability conversations. BOSTON, MA - AUGUST 14: Assistant farm manager Sabrina Pilot-Jones reaches for a carton of broccoli 4. Relocalization There are many sociological factors signaling a new relocalization movement. From championing local farmers, local talent, local businesses to local attractions, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us all to center our attention on whatā€™s in our surroundings and what makes our town, city, region or state unique, beautiful and resilient. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) expects domestic tourism to return faster than international travel, providing a likely economic boost for local businesses. The lockdown has urged people to investigate every nook and cranny of their local environments. Additionally, the Black Lives Matter movement inspired many to seek out local businesses owned by people of color. This exploration sparked new patrons for many of these minority-owned establishments and a discovery, for some, of new local businesses. Relocalization has also been a major issue is the agriculture sector. 2020 sparked greater consumer demand for local foods. For example, interest in farm box deliveries spiked around the world. These direct-from-farm boxes allow eaters to receive fresh, nutrient-dense foods from farmers they can meet and communicate directly with ā€” two aspects of safety and security so direly desired these days. Further, these kinds of locally-sourced food services allow for safe culinary explorationā€”many are discovering new types of grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables cultivated right in their hometowns. Grocer shortages also inspired this movement, with many finding their local food systems to be more reliable. ā€œRelocalisation can not only improve food security, but support a more climate-smart sustainable food system,ā€ notes the British agency Veris in their insights report. Even mega-businesses like Unilever are seeing the benefits of relocalization. ā€œPreviously we shipped many of our productsā€™ ingredients around the world,ā€ Harry Brouwer then CEO of Unilever Food Solutions told Food Inspiration Magazine. ā€œSince COVID-19 we were getting a different view on the goods supply chain. First we focus on obtaining the ingredients as local as possible. For each composite product we first check the possibility to acquire the raw materials locally. Only if that is not possible, because the ingredient is not locally produced, we are looking across the border.ā€ When asked if Unilever plans to revert to their more globalized systems once a vaccine is in place, Brouwer responded: ā€œAbsolutely not. We are not going back. This was a process we should have started a lot earlier. It is utterly ridiculous that we ship ingredients across the globe while they are also produced locally. The coronavirus crisis made our company realize that it is urgent and necessary to initiate this process right now.ā€ Mountain hiking trail lined with beautiful aspen trees on a clear autumn day 5. A desire to commune with nature During a year in which many of us were housebound, the great outdoors took on new significance. Sales of seeds and baby chickens hit all time highs in the U.S. while people looked for birds and nearby trails to explore. NPD group notes that sales of bicycles were up 63% compared to the same time last year. Golf gear and paddle board equipment also saw growth as did searches for plant identification apps. In Japan, 2020 inspired many to look for plots of forestland. As reported in the Japan Times, a company that lists forested land for sale said they typically have around 10 to 20 deals a month, but in August of 2020, they received 500 inquiries, a fivefold increase from the same period last year. In September, they received around 650 inquiries. Meanwhile, in the U.K., folks looked not toward the forests, but their backyards as a potential natural oasis. A survey by LV=GI found that Brits spent an average Ā£125 on their gardens during lockdown, with Millennials and Gen Zers between the ages of 25 and 39 spending the most on their outdoor spaces. Over the past year, when people werenā€™t outside, they were sitting on the couch learning about nature. Many of the top streamed documentaries of 2020 touch on the topics of the natural world. Think: David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet, My Octopus Teacher, Kiss the Ground, and Down to Earth. Nature even dominated screen time on TikTok, Animal Crossing and Minecraft. Oneness with nature is being discussed a cureall: A way to improve oneā€™s mental health, a place to work out our bodies, and also an avenue to address the climate crisis. Some are calling for a ā€œrewildingā€ of lands and our way of living. Rewilding is the return of our natural lands and ways of living to be in sync with nature. Some cities (like Detroit) and countries (like Britain and Australia) are seeing widespread adoption of urban rewilding programs. Some have named rewilding a 2020 gardening trend. And, in April of this past year, the Global Charter for Rewilding the Earth was released, a document already endorsed by over 30 NGOs around the world. Ultimately, the interest in nature is all about health ā€” healthy lands, healthy minds, and healthy bodies. And itā€™s a trend thatā€™s likely to accelerate as we maintain our semi-quarantined lifestyles. Variety of iced colorful latte drinks Iced coffee, turmeric and matcha latte cocktails in glass jars 6. Health and immunity as essential It should come as no surprise that, in response to a global health crisis, demand for products that claim immune-boosting properties is on the rise. Hartman Groupā€™s 2020 report on Functional Food & Beverage Supplements finds that almost 90% of American adult consumers today look for functional benefits in their food, beverages, and, of course, supplements. "Consumers are looking to become more empowered and resilient to help propel them through this time of uncertainty,ā€ explains Laurie Demerrit, CEO of The Hartman Group in a Specialty Food Association webinar. ā€œThis has resulted in a stronger focus on health and wellness, which will open up new opportunities for functional products of all types.ā€ In the UK, the COVID-19 pandemic also shifted Britonā€™s diets, with 51% claiming to be eating more fruits and vegetables. In India, thereā€™s a particularly potent focus on using oneā€™s diet for immune-boosting benefits, with many emphasizing the power of ayurvedic ingredients. This attention to personal health and a desire for control over oneā€™s wellbeing has also benefited the supplements market. Nutrition Business Journal estimates immunity supplement sales in 2020 will be 51.2% over 2019 sales. ā€œThe biggest winner of all is elderberryā€”the purple syrupy herb is being pegged by NBJ to grow at just north of 200% in 2020. But itā€™s not even just immune-centric supplements that are being snatched upā€”sales of multivitamins, the cornerstone of nutritional wellness, are up about 112% in 2020,ā€ notes New Hope Network. Similarly, Hartman Group reports that 31% of U.S. consumers are taking more supplements and 29% say theyā€™re consuming more functional foods and beverages as a result of COVID-19. What does this mean for businesses? Itā€™s likely that, for a long time to come, people will be asking: What can this food, drink, lotion, or supplement do for me? How can it help protect me? 7. Democratization 2020 was a year of reckoning with ever-present issues around racial equality. The Black Lives Matter movement is influencing perspectives on human rights issues worldwide. Indigenous po[CENSORED]tions are vocally protesting the co-option of their native lands, methods and traditions. In the U.S., Black Americans are pointing at the inequalities in healthcare brought starkly to light during the pandemic. Blue collar workers are demanding health and economic protections currently offered to white collar and higher-income individuals. Much like 2019ā€™s Me Too Movement, 2020ā€™s Black Lives Matter Movement will have lasting impacts on the way we talk about and address inequalities across racial and economic lines. Itā€™s a topic that once seen can no longer go unseen, and is an issue that has begun to impact the makeup of corporate boards, fair wage programs for factory workers, and internal HR policies. Without question, the focus on racial equality will also infiltrate the other areas mentioned in this article: Access to nature, affordability of healthy foods, support for minority-owned businesses, democratization of sustainable living options, widespread need for mental health services and wellness programs, and even the diversity of flavors and representation of BIPOC communities in our local and global food systems and on restaurant menus. While it may feel overwhelming to think about what comes next, youā€™ve already made it through one of the most turbulent year in modern human history. With that fortitude and strength, 2021 can become the year of a resilient recovery and innovation.
  3. Indian Motorcycle turns its street-legal FTR tracker into a road bike. Indian Motorcycle tweaks its FTR for 2022 by focusing on road performance. Indian Motorcycle invented a new street bike class with its FTR 1200 street tracker. Now, three years after its model year debut, the American motorcycle brand tweaks the formula by adding road focus, and chopping off some of its nomenclature in hopes of attracting more throttle twisters. The Indian Motorcycle FTR ditches its 1200 nomenclature and its 19/18-inch wheel combo for a pair of road conventional 17-inch hoops. Editorā€™s note: Weā€™ve reported on the original FTR 1200 extensively during the 2019 Indian FTR 1200 S First Ride Review, 2019 Indian FTR 1200 S First Look Review, An Artistic Review of 2019 Indianā€™s FTR 1200, and 2019 Indian FTR 1200 First Ride Around A Dirt Track articles and videos. Peruse that content to learn more about the FTRā€™s history. The saddle height has been reduced due to the smaller-diameter wheels and shorter suspension travel. ā€œThe FTR is unlike any other motorcycle in its ability to deliver superior performance while making a powerful statement of style and self-expression,ā€ says Mike Dougherty, President of Indian Motorcycle. ā€œThe updates weā€™ve delivered further solidify that promise for even the most discerning riders. Indian Motorcycle has always pushed the bounds of motorcycling, innovated, and continuously improved and I think the new FTR is another great example of that.ā€ Like before, the FTR continues to employ bright LED lighting. The FTR ditches its pseudo-dirt track-inspired 19/18-inch cast-aluminum wheels for a more road-centric 17-inch setup. Instead of chunky Dunlop DT3R tires the FTR is now shod with standard streetbike rubber from Metzeler. Suspension travel has been reduced and the settings are tuned for the street, says Indianā€™s press materials. These updates net a 1.4-inch reduction in seat height making the FTR even easier to straddle. Although itā€™s hard to tell in this photo, Indian Motorcycle says the ProTaper handlebar is 1.5 inches narrower than before. To be fair, we didnā€™t think the original setup was too wide. Although to be fair, the previous version had a relatively low seat height for a 1,200cc motorcycle. Lastly, the ProTaper handlebar is also 1.5 inches narrower, however height is unchanged. The ā€™22 version continues to use Indianā€™s 1,203cc liquid-cooled and 60-degree V-twin but benefits from refined engine mapping to help increase its overall riding dynamic. Aside from that tweak, the powertrain carries over. All FTRs come with ABS-enabled triple hydraulic disc brakes from Brembo and cruise control. The S model FTR gets a set of Akrapovič mufflers. Like before the FTR comes in a variety of configurations. The S model ($500 less than the 2019 model, but still a $2,000 upcharge versus the base model) adds a 4.7-inch color TFT touchscreen instrument display and IMU-powered traction and wheelie control. It also benefits from a pair of Akrapovič mufflers and a USB charging port. For a $2,000 upcharge the FTR S ($14,999) model adds a color TFT display, higher-end mufflers, and IMU-powered traction and wheelie control. A USB charging port is also included. The FTR R Carbon ($16,999) commands another $2,000, and trades out Sachs suspension for an Ɩhlins setup. And for those who are looking for more of a scrambler-type setup, Indian offers the FTR Rally ($13,999). This platform boasts an extra 1.2 inches of suspension travel and larger-diameter (same size as the outgoing FTR 1200) wire-spoked wheels shod with Pirelliā€™s fantastic Scorpion Rally STR dual-sport rubber. The base 2022 FTR MSRP is unchanged and continues to be manufactured in Spirit Lake, Iowa, with a two-year warranty. The top-of-the-line FTR R Carbon swaps out Sachs suspension for an Ɩhlins setup. 2022 Indian FTR Technical Specifications and Price: PRICE $12,999 (base model) ENGINE 1,203cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled V-twin; 8-valve BORE x STROKE 102.0 x 73.6mm COMPRESSION RATIO 12.5:1 TRANSMISSION/FINAL DRIVE 6-speed/chain FUEL DELIVERY Fuel injection CLUTCH Wet, multiplate slipper clutch; cable actuation FRAME Steel trellis FRONT SUSPENSION 43mm inverted Sachs fork, spring preload, compression and rebound damping adjustable; 4.7 in. travel REAR SUSPENSION Sachs gas-charged shock, spring preload, compression and rebound damping adjustable; 4.7 in. travel FRONT BRAKES Brembo radial-mount 4-piston calipers, 320mm discs w/ ABS REAR BRAKE 2-piston caliper, 260mm disc WHEELS, FRONT/REAR Cast aluminum; 17 x 3.5 in. / 17 x 5.5 in. 4. Thousands of people in Moscow and across Russia who took to the streets Sunday were met with the harshest show of force the country has seen in recent years. Protesters throughout the country had gathered for the second weekend in a row to support jailed opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who has been held by Russian authorities since mid-January. More than 5,000 people were detained in at least 85 cities as of late Sunday, according to the independent monitoring group OVD-Info -- a record since 2011. In Moscow, the capital, more than 1,600 people were arrested, including Navalny's wife Yulia, though she was later released. Navalny himself has been behind bars since shortly after he arrived in Moscow on January 17. The longtime Russian dissident had spent the previous several months in Germany where he was recovering from being poisoned with Novichok, a powerful nerve agent. Navalny accused the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin of trying to kill him, an allegation the Kremlin has repeatedly denied. A joint investigation last month by CNN and the investigative group Bellingcat implicated the FSB in Navalny's August poisoning, piecing together how an elite unit at the agency followed Navalny's team throughout a trip to Siberia, at the end of which Navalny fell ill from exposure to military-grade Novichok. Russia has denied involvement in the case. Police block the way during a protest against the detention of Navalny in Volgograd on Sunday. Protests across country Sunday began with supporters of Navalny planning protests in at least 120 cities across the vast country, starting at noon local time in each location. Russia's capital on Sunday was more reminiscent of a besieged fortress than a modern city. Cordon after cordon blocked off entire blocks. Countless vans were readied to bring detainees to police stations, and riot police donned heavy-duty uniforms to clean the streets of protesters. They had also sought to gather in front of the Russian Federal Security Service headquarters, or the FSB, which they believe is behind Navalny's Novichok poisoning in August. But in an unprecedented move, Moscow authorities closed seven subway stops in the city center and cut short bus routes to stop the demonstrators from gathering. The areas surrounding the FSB building and the Kremlin were barricaded from early morning. The organizers were then forced to change locations, forcing riot police to catch up with marching columns of people every time Navalny's team changed gathering points across the city. Protesters in Moscow eventually decided to march down to the Matrosskaya Tishina detention center, where Navalny is being held before his trial next week. Local authorities closed metro stops one after another leading up to the detention center in Moscow's northeastern Sokolniki neighborhood. "Let him go!" and "Russia without Putin!" chants could be heard as protesters walked along the snowy streets toward the facility. Three more subway stops along their path were shut down at the police's request in an attempt to stop more people from joining. Before her reported detention, Navalnaya posted a picture on Instagram showing her taking part in a protest in the area. "It's great in Sokolniki today!" Navalnaya said in the caption, alongside a photo showing her, hands raised, followed by a column of people. Navalnaya was detained "during a peaceful walk" by police officers who did not identify themselves or provide any reason for the detention, according to Vyacheslav Gimadi, head of the legal department of Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). She was later released. Riot police detain a participant in an unauthorized protest in support of Navalny in central Moscow on Sunday. A policeman detains a man while protesters try to help him, during a protest in St. Petersburg on Sunday against the detention of opposition leader Alexey Navalny. Russia's interior ministry warned citizens not to participate in the "unauthorized" protests in an Instagram post. Russian federal law requires organizers to file an appeal with local authorities at least 10 days in advance to obtain permission to hold a protest. The warning was followed by a police response that was ratcheted up both in numbers and ruthlessness of tactics from the week prior. Officers were seen using stun guns on people who did not seem to resist detention, a method that hasn't been previously reported by detainees at protests in Russia. In St. Petersburg, one police officer was filmed pointing what appeared to be a firearm at protesters. A CNN team on the ground next to Matrosskaya Tishina saw people dragged away face down in the snow. "I can't breathe," one man said as police officers pushed him to the ground, according to a video shared online from the city of Chelyabinsk. In chaotic scenes from Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg, protesters were seen pushed out onto the frozen ice of rivers and bays before being detained. In the city of Novosibirsk, in Siberia, live video showed police detaining drivers who were honking their car horns in support of the protesters. In response, demonstrators were heard chanting: "Let them go!" People could be seen with their elbows linked, forming chains, chanting "Freedom!" and "Give back our money!" as they stood in front of the city hall in the center of Novosibirsk. Rows of riot police were standing in front of them. Protesters marching along the snowy streets could be heard chanting: "Russia without Putin!" and "one for all, and all for one." Demonstrators take part in an unauthorised protest Sunday in support of Navalny in central Novosibirsk. Riot police detain a man during a rally in support of jailed opposition leader Alexey Navalny in the far eastern city of Vladivostok on Sunday. Putin's plunging ratings Putin saw his ratings plunge to historic lows last year as grievances built up among the public over the declining personal incomes, diminishing personal freedoms, and the government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic. A day after Navalny's arrest, his team poured fuel over the growing dissatisfaction by releasing a bombshell two-hour long documentary into a lavish property at the Black Sea they estimate to cost around $1.4 billion, which they allege was created for Putin. Putin, who once scored points among voters with populist statements about the Russian government's battle against widespread corruption, denied having any links to the palace, but the film seemed to have struck a nerve with the Kremlin. In the days leading up to the protests, Mash, a channel on the encrypted messaging app Telegram with links to a pro-government media holding, posted an interview with Putin's close childhood friend Arkady Rotenberg, a billionaire mostly inaccessible to journalists. Rotenberg claimed he owned the property and announced he was building a hotel there. "Our entire investigation is about Putin using his best friends to hide his assets. In response, the Kremlin shows Rotenberg and declares him the owner of the palace," Maria Pevchikh, one of the investigation's authors, said in a tweet. "They think that they are saving the situation, but in fact they are doing the exact opposite." Many protesters CNN spoke to during this and last weekend's protests said they were already disenchanted with the government, but Navalny's detention and his investigation into Putin pushed them to take to the streets. Some said they never protested before out of fear of repercussions. "It all influenced me to come here today because I saw that they violated the law right in front of everyone," Mikhail, 27, told CNN on Sunday near one of the subway stops where police were detaining people en masse. Police detentions in Moscow The Kremlin's preparations for the weekend protest were not limited to barricades and cordons. Navalny's key allies were all detained more than 10 days ago in an apparent effort to stifle the unrest. Many, including Navalny's brother Oleg, have been under house arrest for the past two months. Last week, however, the circle of wanted activists expanded widely. Among the most shocking cases was that of Anna Vellikok. She was held for 14 days after her arrest for retweeting her boyfriend, Anti-Corruption Foundation investigator Georgy Alburov, one of the filmmakers of the documentary that investigated the Black Sea property. According to materials in the case that Vellikok posted, Vellikok was detained and subsequently arrested for retweeting Alburov's post that linked to a YouTube video where Navalny urged people to protest from inside a court hearing. The judge ruled that by retweeting it, she instigated unsanctioned rallies. "Of course, they are giving me 14 days not for tweets and retweets, but for the fact that the video about Putin's palace has become so po[CENSORED]r. Because so many people took to the streets. Because I'm dating (Georgy)," she tweeted from the court room on Saturday. Sergey Smirnov, the editor-in-chief of an independent outlet called Mediazona, was detained on Saturday while taking a walk with his young son, according to a video posted on his Twitter. He was charged with allegedly inciting rallies on January 23 and later released, on the condition he show up for a court hearing next week after being. Smirnov has said he was at home on the 23rd. These nighttime raids and arrests of Navalny supporters have fed fears of worsening political repressions in Russia, protesters said. "The fact that Anna Vellikok is now being tormented the same way as Oleg Navalny was has been driving me crazy," Inga Kudracheva, an HR manager based in Moscow, said in a viral tweet. "They are just family members of those who dared to jump at Putin personally and talk about his palace built on bribes. How is this not 1937?" she added in a reference to the height of purges led by Joseph Stalin. Other governments respond The widespread detentions also drew condemnation from the US -- including Rebecca Ross, the spokeswoman for the US Embassy in Moscow, and newly minted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. On Sunday, Blinken condemned the "persistent use of harsh tactics against peaceful protesters and journalists by Russian authorities for a second week straight." "We renew our call for Russia to release those detained for exercising their human rights," he continued, referring to Navalny. The Russian Foreign Ministry in turn accused the US of "gross interference" in the internal matters of Russia, saying Blinken was supporting the "violation of law" in a statement posted on its official Facebook page. The FBK has urged US President Joe Biden to impose sanctions on at least eight high-profile Russian figures it says are close to Putin. FBK executive director Vladimir Ashurkov, who signed the letter, told CNN on Saturday that the foundation was calling on the United States to put pressure on Putin to release Navalny. But journalist and campaigner Zhanna Nemtsova, the daughter of murdered Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, said Sunday she believed Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny "will be locked away in prison for many years." "The only way to support Alexey Navalny is to take to the streets," Nemtsova, who has joined the protests in Moscow, told BBC radio. "We have no choice, and it is what can partially guarantee Navalny's security while he's in prison," she said. People attend a protest in Moscow on Sunday against the jailing of Alexey Navalny. Nemtsova's father, former deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov, was assassinated on a Moscow bridge within sight of the Kremlin in 2015. Nemtsov was then considered the most visible leader of the Russian opposition. Five Chechen men were handed prison sentences for his killing in 2017. "Lots of people have nothing to lose, especially young people," Nemtsov told the program, when asked about the hopes of the thousands of people who have been protesting across Russia since Navalny's arrest. "We are experiencing another economic downturn. In many cases, if you want to pursue a decent career, you have to be loyal to the government. Of course, it is very depressing for many people," she added. Navalny's team said on social media they view the Sunday demonstrations as "a success" and announced that the "next stop" for demonstrations will be on Tuesday at Navalny's court hearing. "Today's protest is over, but we continue to fight for Alexey Navalny's freedom," the team posted on Telegram Sunday evening.

  6. To slow the spread of Covid-19, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued late Friday an order that will require people to wear a face mask while using any form of public transportation, including buses, trains, taxis, airplanes, boats, subways or rideshare vehicles while traveling into, within and out of the US. The order goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. Monday. The coverings must be worn over both the nose and mouth while waiting, boarding, traveling and disembarking, it said. The masks need to be at least two or more layers of breathable fabric and needs to be secured to the head with ties, ear loops or elastic bands, according to the order. The CDC said it reserves the right to enforce the order through criminal penalties, but it "strongly encourages and anticipates widespread voluntary compliance" and expects support from other federal agencies to implement the order. As the US death toll from Covid-19 tops 436,000 people, the Biden administration has already called for 100 days of mask usage as well as an increase in the allotment of vaccine doses for each state by 16% in hopes of managing the impacts of the virus that has made January the deadliest month of the pandemic.
  7. Surprise! Halsey is pregnant. The singer, who is active on social media, took to her verified Instagram account Wednesday to share the news that she is expecting a baby. Halsey posted a series of photos with her showing her baby bump. "Surprise!," the caption read along with emojis of a baby bottle, a rainbow and a baby. She did not share the identity of the father. In 2019 Halsey denied reports that she was pregnant after photos of her appearing to be thicker around the middle surfaced.
  8. (CNN) - President Joe Biden held his first call Tuesday with his Russian counterpart, according to the White House, confronting President Vladimir Putin over a range of issues from a recent massive cyberattack to the suspected poisoning of the country's leading opposition figure. The call, which occurred midday, amounted to Biden's opening bid at diplomacy with one of his chief adversaries, whom he has met previously but not dealt with as an equal. Biden's press secretary Jen Psaki said he entered the phone call with the intention of discussing the New START nuclear treaty, which the Biden administration hopes to extend; Russian aggression in Ukraine; the Solarwinds cyber hack, the extent of which is still being determined; reports Russia placed bounties on American troops serving in Afghanistan; Moscow's interference in US presidential elections; and the poisoning of Alexei Navalny. "His intention was also to make clear that the United States will act firmly in defense of our national interests in response to malign actions by Russia," Psaki said, noting the call had taken place during her briefing and that a more fulsome summary would come later. The lengthy list of topics for Biden's first conversation with Putin illustrates the troubled state of affairs between Washington and Moscow that he inherited from the previous administration. Biden has accused his predecessor, President Donald Trump, of being too weak on Russia, accusing him of being "Putin's puppy" during one of their general election debates. Biden hopes to take a firmer line with Putin, officials have said. He's ordered a review from administration agencies on issues related to Russia and could impose new sanctions on the country. But he's also made an opening bid for diplomacy on the nuclear treaty, suggesting he is open to fostering a working relationship with Putin. "I find that we can both operate in the mutual self-interest of our countries, as a new START agreement, and make it clear to Russia that we are very concerned about their behavior, whether it's Navalny, whether it's the Solar Winds or whether it's reports of bounties on the heads of Americans in Afghanistan," he told reporters on Monday. "I have asked the agencies in question to do a thorough read for me on every one of those issues, to update me precisely where they are, and I will not hesitate to raise those issues with the Russians," he said. Tuesday's call came at Moscow's request, according to a person familiar with the matter, who said Biden wanted to confer with leaders in Europe and his advisers before getting on the phone with Putin. The Kremlin requested the call shortly after Biden took office last week, which is standard for foreign leaders who are hoping to speak with the new president. Biden received a series of briefings ahead of the call from senior administration officials going over administration positions and Putin's likely responses when Biden raised issues like the Solarwinds hack and the Navalny poisoning, the person said. Biden's predecessor often entered his calls with Putin having not prepared and on at least one occasion disregarded the advice of his advisers not to congratulate Putin on winning his election. Biden also spoke Tuesday with Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, a symbolic conversation given the defense bloc's role in defending against Russian aggression in Europe. Biden has also spoken with the leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, including on issues related to Russia Putin was one of the last world leaders to congratulate Biden upon winning the presidency, waiting until it was clear Trump had lost the Electoral College count to offer formal regards. The two men met when Biden was vice president and he visited Moscow. During a tour of Putin's office, Biden later claimed he told the Russian leader, inches from his face, that he did not believe he had a soul.
  9. Kawasaki was seemingly unphased by how weird of a year 2020 was. Though on the inside, the company likely faced more challenges than it let on, on the surface, it was business as usual for Team Green. The company unveiled a slew of new products and even announced that its motorcycle division would become its own entity in 2021. With the year coming to an end and the impressive number of new additions to the green lineup, youā€™d think that Kawasaki is done unveiling bikes for a while, but youā€™d be wrong. Itā€™s going to add two new models to the list in January, 2021. Until we find out what models will complete the lineup in a few weeks, letā€™s take a look at all the new stuff we already know is coming. Kawasaki KLX300 For 2021, the Kawasaki KLX250 turns into a 300. Team Green had already introduced the off-road-only KLX300R in 2019 and the new road-legal KLX300 follows in its trail. It runs on the same 292cc, DOHC, single, paired with a six-speed transmission. The KLX300 receives the same suspension hardware as the R which includes a 43mm inverted fork with adjustable compression damping at the front and Uni-Trak shock with piggyback reservoir with adjustable rebound damping and spring preload. Suspension travel is slightly shorter on the road model with 10 inches of travel front and 9.1 inches back (versus 11.2 inches front and back). The brake components are also slightly different, with a single 250mm disc with dual-piston caliper at the front and a 240 mm disc with single-piston caliper at the back. It also comes with all the mirrors, lighting, and plate holder the R doesnā€™t have. It results in a slightly higher weight at 302 poundsā€”despite the 2.0-gallon fuel tank instead of 2.1. The new 2021 Kawasaki KLX300 starts at $5,599. Kawasaki KLX300 SM The most exciting of the two 300s introduced in November, 2020, is this one: Kawasakiā€™s first supermoto in a decade, the KLX300 SM. A supermoto is a track-ready dirt bike so Kawasaki took the KLX300ā€™s architecture and mounted it to a pair of 17-inches wheels shod in IRC Street Winner tires. While the suspension is the same as the base KLX300 (with shorter travel), the SM gets a brake upgrade with a 300mm disc with dual-piston caliper at the front and the same 240mm disc with single-piston caliper at the back. The 2021 Kawasaki KLX300 SM starts at $5,999. Kawasaki KX250X and KX450X Kawasaki KX250X Kawasaki KX450X For 2021, Kawasaki updated its competition-ready KX250 and KX450 motocross and added a new ā€œcross countryā€ trim level for both, the Xs. To make the bikes more competition-ready, Team Green said that it tuned the engine and the suspension accordingly, upped the brake componentsā€™ quality, added a skidplate and sidestand, and wrapped the 21 and 18-inch wheels in Dunlop GEOMAX AT81 tires. The 250 gets Kayaba suspension hardware while the 450 is upgraded to Showa components. Pricing on the 2021 Kawasaki KX250X starts at $8,399 and for the Kawasaki KX450X, at $9,599. Kawasaki Megur K3 In December, 2020, Kawasaki introduced yet another addition to its heritage lineup. Based on the W800, the new Meguro K3 revives the first chapter of Kawasakiā€™s history book. What we assume will be a special trim level uses the same frame and engine as the W800 but receives a few stylistic choices of its own. They include red accent, including on the engineā€™s bevel drive, a taller handlebar, a smooth saddle with white piping, and adjustable rear shocks. As things currently stand, Kawasaki doesnā€™t plan to import the model to the U.S. for the time being (despite securing the name ā€œMeguroā€ with the USPTO in 2019). Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R and ZX-10RR We expected a new ZX-10R to be part of the lineup Kawasaki was going to unveil on November 23, 2020. Sure enough, the WSBK-inspired bike and its racing variant debuted with a slew of updates, including a new Euro 5-compliant exhaust system. On the surface, the two sportbikes receive a redesigned fairing with Ninja H2-inspired lines and shapes with new aerodynamic winglets and LED lighting all around. The chassis gets a few updates and notably gets a slightly wider fork offset and a longer swingarm for improved handling. Other 2021 upgrades include electronically-actuated valves, new gear ratios, and an air-cooled oil-cooler. The bike also comes with cruise control, riding modes, and Rideology App connectivity. The 2021 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R starts at $16,399 and the ZX-10RR, at $28,999. Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE LT+ Skyhook Update Though the term ā€Skyhookā€ has been around for close to a decadeā€”we wrote about the 2013 Ducati Multistrada 1200ā€™s Skyhook suspension in the pastā€”in 2020, an increasing number of manufacturers have adopted a version of the active suspension that acts like the back of the bike is suspended to, well, an imaginary hook. The list of bikes now featuring a Skyhook suspension includes two Kawasaki motorcycles, one of which is the Versys 1000 SE LT+. The bike itself didnā€™t change muchā€”it was already thoroughly upgraded for 2019, so it didnā€™t need much work. The only update for 2021 is the addition of the Showa Skyhook EERA technology that now works hand in hand with Kawasakiā€™s Electronic Control Suspension to provide optimized support at the back and increased stability on bumpy surfaces. The 2021 Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE LT+ with new Show Skyhook technology is priced at $18,199. Kawasaki Z H2 SE The Kawasaki Z H2 is brand new to the family. Introduced as a 2020 model, Team Greenā€™s supercharged hypernaked created a lot of waves when it launched in October, 2019. This year, the maker upped the technological ante with the introduction of the new Z H2 SE, equipped with Kawasakiā€™s Electronic Control Suspension (KECS) with Showa Skyhook technology, like on the Versys. This means that the H2ā€™s suspension can now be electronically adjusted by the rider via the onboard computer. The new 2021 Kawasaki Z H2 SE is priced at $19,700. Two Mystery Kawasaki Bikes While at this point of the year, we normally have a pretty solid idea of what a given manufacturer is going to offer in the new year, Kawasaki pushed the launch of its last two new bikes until January, 2021 . The teaser video suggests that the two models are capable off-roadersā€”one of which is also adapted for the road. The former is perhaps the most mysterious model of the two. Kawasakiā€™s off-road lineup is pretty complete at this point so chances are this is going to be an entirely new model. We suggested it could potentially be a road-legal version of the competition KX450 or perhaps a KLX300 competition version. The latter is likely a dual-sport, one many suspect to be the long-awaited KLR650 replacement. After all, the mid-size adventure slash dual-sport segment is thriving and it would be a shame for the brand behind one of the most iconic adventurers to miss out on the trend.
