The Department of Defense is embarking on a program to update millions of its computers to Windows 10, an unusually quick move for one of Microsoft's massive government customers. Microsoft highlighted the department's plans in a pair of blogposts Wednesday, but the news emerged in a little-noticed November memo by Terry Halvorsen, the Pentagon's chief information officer. Halvorsen said the department must rapidly transition to Windows 10 to improve cybersecurity and streamline and lower the costs of its information-technology footprint. He set a goal of completing the migrations by January 2017. It's unclear what the project will cost. About 4 million devices are slated for updates as part of the program, said Susie Adams, chief technology officer with the Microsoft group responsible for sales and support to federal-government clients. "This is an unprecedented move for the DoD," Adams said. It is the largest single deployment of Windows 10 since its release six months ago, she said. Sprawling federal agencies are rarely quick adopters of new software, and the Pentagon's embrace of Windows 10 is likely to be read as an endorsement of the software's security features and stability, analysts say. "The speed at which they're doing the deployment is shocking to me," said Patrick Moorhead, president of Moor Insights & Strategy, an independent research firm "A year? That's fast. The DoD is normally last to deploy something." Typically, Moorhead said, government agencies wait to see what vulnerabilities hackers find in new software, and consider updating when later versions or the government's own security workers have patched those vulnerabilities. That hesitance, along with the massive scale of government agencies and a lengthy budgeting and review processes, has left the DoD with a patchwork of operating systems, from Microsoft's ancient Windows XP to Windows 7, and a smaller portion of software made by other companies, Moorhead said. Windows 10 was released in July to generally positive reviews. Businesses were said to be more comfortable with Windows 10 than its widely panned predecessor, Windows 8. Microsoft said last month that more than 200 million personal computers, Xbox game consoles and smartphones were running the operating system. The Seattle-area company has touted Windows 10 security features like integrated fingerprint and face scanning and a feature that walls off the operating system's core functions to prevent them from being infected by malware. Government clients, much like big businesses, usually buy Microsoft's operating system as part of multiyear service and technical-support packages that give them the option to upgrade to the latest software at no added charge. It's unclear what the labor and other elements of the Windows 10 upgrade effort will cost. In his memo, Halvorsen advised the services and agencies within the DoD to "include developing cost estimates" in their plans. For Microsoft, the hope is the Pentagon's apparent comfort with Windows 10 nudges big businesses to make a similar move, said Bob O'Donnell, president of Technalysis Research. Technology buyers "can look at this and say, 'And those are the people keeping us safe,'" O'Donnell said. "This is a big win for Microsoft."

When it comes to gaming, laptop owners have always been stuck between a rock and a hard place. Thin and light systems often portability and convenience, but limited gaming performance. Larger, desktop-replacement systems offer more than enough firepower for gaming, but are typically heavy and fall into the category of “transportable” rather than portable. The handful of external chassis that have been built by various vendors tend to have their own limitations and often require a reboot when changing the graphics mode, or don’t support laptop hibernation. They’re also typically tied to either a specific product family or even a single product SKU. AMD wants to offer mobile gamers a more flexible option, and it’s partnered with Razer and Intel to make it possible. XConnect is the name of AMD’s driver support and implementation using Thunderbolt external graphics. AMD XConnect: External graphics done right? Since we’re talking about the efforts of three different companies, let me break out which manufacturer contributes what. AMD wrote drivers for its own Radeon GPUs in order to support an external graphics chassis. Radeon cards running Radeon Software 16.2.2 or later are capable of plug-and-play configuration with an external chassis. The new software can monitor which applications are running on an external GPU and offers the option to close current applications and prep the system for safe removal. Unlike previous solutions, you can connect or disconnect an external dock without rebooting the system. Razer built the first system to support this feature (the Razer Blade Stealth) and is the first company to adopt the BIOS extensions and capabilities required to allow for PCI Express hot-plugging. Razer also built the first desktop chassis (the Razer Core). Right now, the Razer Blade Stealth and Razer Core are the only compatible products on the market, but that will change with [CENSORED]ure launches. Razer built the first system to support this feature (the Razer Blade Stealth) and is Intel developed the Thunderbolt 3 standard that makes the entire system function and specifically developed the external graphics specification that ties these components together. While external Thunderbolt chassis have existed for years, these are not necessarily designed for any graphics card and have many of the restrictions mentioned above regarding both hot swapping and reboot requirements. All three companies have contributed their work back into the general Thunderbolt eGFX system, which means it should be much easier for third parties and other vendors to create their own solutions. The x4 PCI Express 3.0 connection isn’t as fast as a full desktop slot, no, but it’s enough to drive gaming with an average 10% performance hit depending on the title and the GPU.the first company to adopt the BIOS extensions and capabilities required to allow for PCI Express hot-plugging. Razer also built the first desktop chassis (the Razer Core). Right now, the Razer Blade Stealth and Razer Core are the only compatible products on the market, but that will change with [CENSORED]ure launches. While these results have been provided by AMD, they’re also running on an ultrabook at 1440p. That’s strong performance all around. The ecosystem long-term goal The mobile graphics industry has never developed an ecosystem that allowed for simple or easy graphics upgrades. While the MXM standard defines a specific pin-out for a graphics card, it does not specify the card size or configuration. As a result, two MXM cards from two different systems may be practically incompatible with each other depending on the laptop’s design. AMD, Intel, and Razer want to solve this problem by introducing a flexible external standard that bypasses all the heat and thermal issues associated with jamming top-end graphics cards into small enclosed spaces. The Thunderbolt eGFX specification isn’t limited to large chassis. At IDF last year, Intel demoed external graphics solutions with a wide number of breakout ports and capabilities that were designed with far more modest TDP requirements. Our sources have indicated those were all using an early version of Thunderbolt external graphics and were powered by AMD hardware. If laptop manufacturers and third-party component companies buy into this capability, you’ll be able to purchase a chassis from any vendor and use it with any laptop that offers Thunderbolt eGFX. While the chassis would still cost a non-trivial amount of money ($200 to $300 seems a safe bet), the hardware would be upgradeable and compatible with [CENSORED]ure systems. Intel will maintain backwards compatibility in any [CENSORED]ure version of Thunderbolt, which means [CENSORED]ure systems that utilize a hypothetical Thunderbolt 4 should still be backwards compatible with a Thunderbolt 3 dock. Desktop GPUs also tend to be less expensive than their laptop counterparts and to offer better performance at any given price point. Over time, the chassis could effectively pay for itself by allowing gamers to use less expensive video cards that offer higher overall performance. Razer has stated that its dock is also compatible with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, but Nvidia has stayed fairly quiet about this capability. The company added hot-plug support in a driver around CES, but hasn’t said much since. AMD has stated that its XConnect driver will work with the R9 280, R9 285, R9 290, R9 290X, the R9 300 family, and all Fury and Nano products. It will also be compatible with various AMD mobile GPUs and [CENSORED]ure Polaris hardware. As someone who has covered the mobile industry for years and watched video cards vanish from lower-end hardware, I’m genuinely excited to see a GPU solution that can meet mobile gamers’ needs without requiring them to buy desktop replacements. This standard appears to solve all of the problems that previously held the industry back. Will customers bite? That’s another question.

The Syrian government says it will send a delegation to fresh peace talks due to start in Geneva on Monday, but has put limits on the agenda. Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, speaking in Damascus, ruled out any debate of presidential elections. An opposition spokesman said the government's pre-conditions could halt the talks before they had even started. Earlier, the US said violence had fallen dramatically since a cessation of hostilities began two weeks ago. The main Syrian opposition umbrella group, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), said on Friday it would push for an interim government with full executive powers in which President Bashar al-Assad and the current leadership would have no role. The fate of President Assad has been one of the main stumbling blocks in previous rounds of tentative talks. The story of the conflict What is a cessation of hostilities? How Putin is succeeding in Syria UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura has said he wants to see presidential elections in the next 18 months, but on Saturday Mr Muallem dismissed the idea. "Neither he nor anyone else has the right to talk about presidential elections. This is an exclusive right of the Syrian people,'' he said. He described the opposition's demands for an interim government with full executive powers as a "red line". "If this is what they [the opposition] think, I advise them not to come to the negotiations so that they don't make us tired and we don't make them tired," Mr Muallem said. He said the Syrian government delegation would return to Damascus within 24 hours if the opposition did not turn up. HNC spokesman Monzer Makhous accused Mr Muallem of "putting the nails in the coffin of Geneva". "Muallem is stopping Geneva before it starts," he told Al Arabiya Al Hadath TV. A fragile process - Lyse Doucet, BBC chief international correspondent Syria's warring sides are under significant pressure from their respective backers to go to Geneva. No one wants to be blamed for any breakdown. So they are likely to keep their pledge to show up. But there is an unwavering red line for Damascus - no discussion of President Assad's role, not even of presidential elections. Never mind that UN envoy Staffan de Mistura said elections would be discussed. Mr Muallem - and presidential adviser Bouthaina Shaaban in a BBC interview - say Mr de Mistura could not "dictate" the agenda. The Syrian government has been emboldened by Russia's immense military support, as well its diplomatic weight which is shaping this new process. It is still not clear what Russia expects in Geneva. And the opposition, and its backers, have their own red line on President Assad's [CENSORED]ure. Despite a truce that, unexpectedly, has largely held for two weeks, the gaps remain dangerously wide in these very early stages of a very fragile process. The HNC has already said it will attend the UN-sponsored indirect talks in Geneva. The last round collapsed in February without agreement. A temporary cessation of hostilities agreed by most participants in the conflict began at the end of last month. It excludes so-called Islamic State (IS) and al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's branch in Syria. US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday that US and Russian officials were meeting to discuss alleged breaches of the temporary truce by government forces. But he said "perceived" violations of the cessation of hostilities should not derail the Geneva talks. "The level of violence by all accounts has been reduced by 80-90%, which is very, very significant," he said. "We believe that the start of talks this next week in Geneva presents a critical moment for bringing the political solution to the table that we've all been waiting for, even as we extend the humanitarian assistance and continue to try to reduce the violence." The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, said air raids by the Syrian government had killed seven civilians in Aleppo on Friday. The claim cannot be independently verified. More than 250,000 Syrians have been killed and millions more have been forced from their homes in five years of Syria's civil war that began with an uprising against Mr Assad.

New system developed by Traffic Penalty Tribunal and Resolver will make appealing parking tickets quicker and easier A new online portal to allow motorists to appeal parking tickets via smartphone, tablet or laptop will be launched on Monday (March 14). Currently just 0.5 per cent of drivers who get a fine appeal to the Traffic Penalty Tribunal (TPT) yet half of those who do are successful. The new platform has been developed by TPT in partnership with consumer complaints service Resolver and takes away the need for the slow process of submitting paper evidence via post. Video and photographic evidence can be uploaded on the new system, too. Brighton & Hove City Council will launch the system from March 14 with every council across the country expected to have it in place by the end of the year. Fines for parking or bus lane contraventions (outside of London) in England and Wales will be able to be appealed with the new service along with penalties for the Dartford Crossing and Durham congestion charge. • Dartford Crossing tolls: your guide to Dart Charge Motorists can appeal to the TPT if they think a penalty has been wrongly issued against them, but only after a challenge to the authority which issued the penalty has been formally rejected. The online setup, which has been in development for the past year, will not only make it easier but quicker, too, with the TPT able to rule on cases in a matter of days rather than weeks. Caroline Sheppard, Chief Adjudicator of the TPT, said: “Getting a parking ticket can be a frustrating experience, but our new portal makes the appeals process quicker, simpler and more transparent, putting paid to the old adage that ‘the wheels of justice grind slowly’. “The platform has already generated considerable interest from other areas of the UK judiciary because it is fast, efficient, accessible and will bring cost savings to local authorities as well as simplifying the process for those appealing.”

Seven million people die each year because of exposure to air pollution, making it the single greatest environmental health risk on earth. The estimate was reported in Feb by the World Health Organization; based on 2012 numbers. What’s disturbing is that most people suffer from premature deaths due to indoor air pollution and in most developing nations it occurs largely from indoor cooking stove fuels like wood, coal, and cow dung. According to WHO, over 4 million people die prematurely from illnesses caused from cooking with solid fuels. In a bid to prevent health hazards caused by the use of coal and wood based chulahs across India, Suraksha Sanchetna Abhiyan (SSA) from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) launched the campaign ‘Har Kadam Suraksha Ki Oar’ where the focus is on women’s health and gas conservation. SSA’s approach to driving the message closer home is innovative with the team visiting each household amidst the rhythm of the Lezim and the infectious beat of dhols. Safety cards, pre-designed rangolis outside people’s home, the enactment of three simple street plays, prizes and lucky draws are also a part of the campaign. Ads by ZINC Speaking about the initiative, Subhankar Biswas, GM, LPG sales and marketing, HPCL said, “This year, the new approach focuses on women’s health and gas conservation, along with concentrating on-safety issues that women need to understand and adopt. We decided to communicate the health hazards of using fuels like coal, cow dung, wood etc. In addition to conveying the benefits of using a LPG cylinder in the kitchen, we are also conveying and educating people on ways of the correct and proper use of LPG cylinders such that they don’t put anyone’s life in jeopardy.” Through this initiative SSA will visit 500 small towns/villages across various states in Bihar, UP, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Over the last three years, SSA has reached out to almost 1200 villages and engaged with over 8.5 million people with their crucial safety messages.

Having high-protein foods makes you feel fuller between meals, an important factor that can ultimately help you reduce overall calorie consumption and reduce weight, suggests new research. Higher protein loads have a greater effect on fullness than lower protein loads, showed the findings of the study, thereby confirming a long-held belief that protein intake impacts satiety. “Though this study did not specifically evaluate dieters, feeling fuller could help to reduce food intake, an important factor when dieting,” said lead investigator Richard Mattes, professor at Purdue University in Indiana, US. “If these effects are sustained over the long-term — and our study only looked at short-term effects — increased protein intake may aid in the loss or maintenance of body weight,” Mattes noted. High protein foods include eggs, meat, fish, tofu, beans, lentils, yogurt, and nuts, among several other food items. In this study, researchers conducted a systematic review of the evidence on the effect of protein intake on perceived fullness and confirmed that protein does, in fact, make us feel fuller. “A good deal of evidence suggests that protein activates satiety hormone release and so should be most strongly tied with fullness ratings,” Mattes noted. “But individual studies are often conducted in small po[CENSORED]tions or with different approaches that can make interpretation of results challenging. Our study combined multiple experiments to confirm the presence of an effect,” Mattes pointed out. With the confirmation that protein intake is related to satiety, defined as fullness between meals, modestly higher protein intake may allow individuals to feel fuller between meals. Yet, while protein may help dieters feel fuller, it is by no means a magic bullet, the researchers cautioned. “Feelings like hunger and fullness are not the only factors that influence intake. We often eat for other reasons. Anyone who has ever felt too full to finish their meal but has room for dessert knows this all too well,” Mattes explained. “The exact amount of protein needed to prolong fullness as well as when to consume protein throughout the day is not resolved, and our study did not determine this,” Heather Leidy, assistant professor at University of Missouri, said. So while the researchers encourage the public not to consume protein to the point of excess, the study suggests that people looking to moderate their energy intake by enhancing the sensation of fullness might consider a moderate increment in protein consumption as a first step.

Last month, Microsoft made Windows 10 a recommended update rather than an optional installation. The shift was expected to trigger a fresh wave of installation activations, since users who didn’t configure their systems to block the update would find Windows 10 waiting and ready for installation. New data suggests that Microsoft’s decision to flip that particular switch may not have had the impact the company hoped it would. Three separate vendors who track OS market share all see signs that Windows 10 adoption is slowing down, Computerworld reports. Net Applications reports Windows 10 on 14.2% of devices, a 1.1-point increase from January. Computerworld’s own metrics imply that Microsoft has only recently breached the 200 million installation mark with Windows 10, despite claiming to have reached this in January. It’s not all bad news, though — Windows 10 is officially now more po[CENSORED]r than Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined. Meanwhile, the Ireland-based StatCounter saw Windows 10 improve to 14.9% of the total market, up 1.2 points from the previous month. Growth is falling off month by month, however, with fewer systems choosing to take Microsoft’s free upgrade offer. What could this mean for Microsoft? There are several ways to interpret the data. First, it’s possible that while Microsoft has now enabled the ability to push Windows 10 as a recommended update, it’s possible that the company is still testing the waters with this capability and rolling it out on a limited scale before full deployment. If that’s true, we should see adoption accelerate in the coming months. Some users will skip the upgrade because they aren’t sure if its legitimate. Some won’t see it because their system isn’t set up for automatic updates. Some are undoubtedly skipping the offer because they aren’t happy with Windows 10. But even if we allow for generous percentages on each of those groups, they don’t come close to the PC market’s total install base. Microsoft’s billion-device goal for Windows 10 has always been ambitious. While the company may get there over time, it may need to either extend its free Windows upgrade offer, or start throwing in other goodies to sweeten the pot. Free Office or Xbox Live would seem to be a good place to start. Microsoft’s push to get Windows 10 on more devices isn’t just so the company can simplify its support structure. If Redmond ever hopes to have a mobile operating system people want to use, it needs to boost engagement with Windows 10 so it can leverage one ecosystem to try and kick start another. The degree to which this will work depends on how easily Windows applications move between desktop and mobile. So far, at least in gaming, they don’t appear to shift well at all — at least not compared to the advantages of a platform like Steam. Further investigation into the Windows Store and its gaming requirements is still ongoing.

You don’t tug on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit into the wind, you don’t pull the mask of that old Lone Ranger, and you don’t run Microsoft SQL Server on Linux (with apologies to the late Jim Croce). Now we can scratch that last item off the list. Microsoft announced that an edition of its SQL Server software for Linux will arrive in mid-2017. A private preview release with “core relational database capabilities” is available for testing now. “We are delighted to be working with Microsoft as it brings SQL Server to Linux,” said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, in the statement. “Customers are already taking advantage of Azure Data Lake services on Ubuntu, and now developers will be able to build modern applications that utilize SQL Server’s enterprise capabilities.” While there are, of course, numerous well-tested paid and Open Source relational database options for Linux servers, you can imagine a couple of scenarios where it would make sense to run SQL Server. An example that comes to mind is a shop running mostly Windows Server with SQL Server, but that has a few groups that prefer Linux servers and wants to reduce maintenance and backup efforts by running SQL Server on both platforms. And, it gives Microsoft the ability to pitch its database management solutions to all-Linux server shops who were unapproachable until now. Microsoft has come a long way since that fateful day on June 1, 2001 when then Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was quoted by the Chicago Sun-Times as saying, “Linux is a cancer that attaches itself in an intellectual property sense to everything it touches,” in reference to its GNU General Public License (GPL). To its credit, Microsoft started up its Open Source Lab just a few years later in 2004. I visited the Open Source Labs twice during its run. (My commentary from the second of my two visits in 2007 can be found here.) In 2012, the Microsoft Open Technologies subsidiary opened its doors with a mission to “accelerate Microsoft’s open collaboration with the industry by delivering critical interoperable technologies in partnership with open source and open standards communities.” Although it shut down in April 2015, it is clear that today’s Microsoft is fully engaged with the open source community, with announcements such as this week’s SQL Server for Linux and last month’s purchase of Xamarin, which had pivoted from its original goal of creating an open source version of the Microsoft .NET Framework to focusing on cross-platform mobile app development using C# and .NET.

Car price calculator, free online valuation or dealer quote? Check our guide to finding the right used value for your car How do I value my car? It’s the obvious question you need answering before setting foot in a dealership with a part-exchange in mind, or posting your car on a classifieds site when you’re thinking of putting it up for sale. Finding out what your car is worth is not always straightforward, so our guide to finding the right used car valuation will help you, whether it’s setting the right price to attract a private buyer with your online ad, or haggling with a salesman on a dealer forecourt. • How to buy a new car How much is my car worth? As a rough rule of thumb, a new car will lose 60 per cent of its value in three years. This means a car you bought for £25,000 will sell for just £10,000 in three years time. That would be far too simple though, because not all cars follow a fixed route of depreciation - some preserve their value better than others, and it’s important for owners to know why. What factors affect your used car valuation most? Most cars lose the bulk of their value in the first three to five years, and the AA estimates that after eight years many cars are unlikely to depreciate further. But the make of your car can easily determine how much the years devalue your vehicle. The car valuation service Glass’s published a report recently highlighting the lowest depreciating car brands in the UK: Make Annual rate of depreciation Land Rover 20.3% Tesla 28.5% Maserati 29.8% Audi 31.1% MINI 31.3% Jeep 31.7% Lexus 33.0% Dacia 33.6% Mitsubishi 34.0% Mazda 34.2% As the data shows, premium makes tend to retain their value better than budget brands. Ford more information of the best and worst cars for depreciation follow the links below. • Cars that hold their value best • Fastest depreciating cars Age and make are factors drivers will be unable to change after purchasing a vehicle, but where every motorist can make the difference is how much and how carefully they drive their car. Mileage on a car is what most buyers look for, and keeping it low will go a long way to ensuring a higher sale price. Servicing aside, a clean and well maintained car will always sell for a better price than a scruffy example – remember this the next time you’re attempting an ambitious parallel park. While it may be a pain in the neck to have work done, calculate carefully whether the cost of repairing that scuffed alloy, panel ding or cracked light lens will repay you at resale time – an immaculately presented car is usually a magnet to buyers. Seasonal factors are also worth considering. It may be a cliché, but convertibles and sports car prices do rise in the spring. Likewise 4x4s and SUVs tend to be more in demand in the winter. Taking all this into account, the next step is to find out how much is your car actually worth. How to value your car The easiest way to get a rough estimate of your car value is to go to a classifieds website and search for your specific make, model, and year with a similar mileage and condition to see what people are willing to fork up. Keep in mind that most advertisers will accept an offer near to the asking price though. Going to a dealership and asking for a value might not be as accurate as hoped for, as dealerships will often give a low-ball offer. They have their own margins to cover, after all. Don’t use dealer used car prices to set the value for your privately advertised car either – buyers who use dealers are usually prepared to pay more because they provide monthly finance deals or warranties. Some buyers also they feel there’s more legal protection if things go wrong. • How to cut your car service costs: cheaper repairs, MOTs and servicing Industry professionals such as CAP and Glass’s provide a service where you input your vehicle details and they provide you with a rough estimate. These are often paid services, but could be worth the money if you can't seem to find the right value by doing your own research – and of course your potential buyers may be making similar online searches too. Ultimately, though, a car will sell for as much as someone is willing to pay for it, so don’t be afraid to be slightly optimistic when putting it up for sale - and take money off if it won't shift.

In a bid to promote women entrepreneurs, Indian government, on March 8 launched ‘Mahila E-Haat’, a first-of-its-kind website that would offer them a platform to sell their products. This is an indication that women have come a long way from just being a homemaker. Also, if nothing else, we believe Narendra Modi’s start up friendly environment in the country has proved to be a blessing for female entrepreneurs and instrumental in fighting gender stereotyping in the business community. On the occasion of International Women’s Day where the theme is ‘Gender Parity’, we salute the undying spirit of these six women entrepreneurs. Nina Lekhi, founder & creative head, Baggit Nina Lekhi who was recently featured in Fortune India’s Most Powerful Women list started her company with minimal investment from her mom. Today, she and her design team launches new collections every month for the high-fashioned consumers. Nina started the company from scratch but the journey wasn’t always easy. Failures in the past, ignited a spark within her to be successful. It also gave her a lot of clarity on how she wanted her business to turn out. With 44 exclusive Baggit stores, currently, Baggit is present in 77 cities across India and numerous online channels. An exclusive collection “The Rusted Revolution” by Nina Lekhi for Baggit has also been launched recently to cater to the modern, well-travelled customers. She was also conferred Women Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2015 by Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Hon’ble Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. What prompted you to be an entrepreneur? Three decades ago I realised that my friends and I did not have funky and contemporary bags to buy in India. My zest for painting and art inspired me to take up art courses- one in textile and another in interior decoration. The design background I developed and the urge to create extraordinary handbags for the fashionable woman helped me start my company. I picked up the tools of the trade and started the Baggit journey. How did you go about it? Since my teenage years, I felt that just like T-shirts with slogans, bags too can be fun and creative. This thought urged me to create “Bags with Attitude”. I was always inclined towards graphics and humour-related objects and knew that I wanted to do something that adds value to the customer. I created my first set of tote bags and for the first few years sold it to a few retail stores in Mumbai. The collection was quite a hit among consumers. I learnt a lot during this phase and gained customer insights. Gradually, I started experimenting with canvas and then moved on to using coloured canvas for a more artistic feel. Today, we design bags which are light weight, easy to use, reusable, recyclable and environment friendly. How do you handle the fierce competition? Baggit’s strength lies in delivering a product which is superior, in terms of functionality as well as design. The acceptance among all age groups and our large variety of skills helps us retain market-share. Tanaaz Bhatia, founder, Bottomline Media An alumnus of the prestigious Stern School of Business, New York University, with a degree in media and finance, Tanaaz began her career in New York, working on Wall Street with Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns before moving back to India to start her own venture, Bottomline Media. She has worked on some of the biggest films such as Ra One, Don 2, Agent Vinod, English Vinglish, Roy, and Dil Dhadakne Do and her recent accomplishment has been marketing Dilwale. Her extensive work with luxury brands such as Micheal Kors, Tumi, John Galliano, Tods, Satya Paul and with celebrities like Shah Rukh, Gauri Khan and Saif Ali Khan has made her the consultant of choice for companies planning their foray into the country. The company has also stayed true to servicing every aspect right from celebrity partnerships, digital campaigns to television production. What prompted you to start a company? I moved from a career on Wall Street to Mumbai when my father had a heart attack. I worked with Kotak Mahindra and then at Citi Bank, but starting my own company had been something I had wanted all along. Bottomline Media took birth as an idea over a cup of coffee at Gloria Jeans. A friend suggested I look at the entertainment sector and the business around it, since I know so many people in the field. I saw this idea as something that would work for me and started acting on it. Soon my dream started taking a more tangible form. How did you go about it? Timing is everything. When an opportunity knocks at your door, you have to be smart and grab it and if you don’t, you really lose out. Being in the right place at the right time is really important. Around the time when I was starting out, I met Jaspreet Walia who was then working on his movie Lamhaa and he asked me to work with him on it. I laughed because I didn’t know what to do in a film, so he said I should take up film branding. Initially, I was apprehensive, but it worked so well! After that movie in 2010, word about my work spread and several projects came our way. How do you handle the fierce competition? It isn’t easy but when your work is fueled with passionate challenges, it makes the job more exciting. Sanjay Dutt was impressed by my work in Lamhaa and asked me to work with him on another project. While the industry has stiff competition, hard work and great output never goes unnoticed. I kept my focus on my goal and before I knew it, I was working with Shah Rukh Khan on Ra One. This film was the turning point in my life. The marketing idea, the videogame based on Ra One, was a huge success. The strategy went viral and we got in touch with many international brands. That put me on the map and there was no stopping after that. Vandana Luthra, founder, VLCC VLCC, a beauty and wellness giant has it’s presence in 11 countries across Asia, Africa and the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) and the credit goes to Vandana Luthra. Initially, a homemaker, Vandana started her journey in 1989 when the first of her two daughters was only 3 years-old. Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, this beauty expert got herself well versed with beauty, fitness, food and nutrition and skin care when she pursued higher education in Germany, UK and France, after completing a professional course from the Polytechnic for Women in New Delhi. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 for her contribution. and in 2015, she was listed as the 33rd most powerful woman in business in India by Fortune India. What prompted you to be an entrepreneur? In my family, we were encouraged to take decisions and be independent. Beauty and wellness always fascinated me. Once, I was accompanying my father on his official trip to Germany where I met his friends – a husband-wife duo running a health centre. Theirs was a great combination, with one being a nutritionist and the other a cosmetologist. They had a big influence on my decision to enter the business of beauty and wellness. Moreover, the encouragement and support I received from my husband Mukesh, who is also a first generation entrepreneur, further steered me towards my entrepreneurial journey. I started VLCC with a simple dream. I wanted to create an environment where people felt supported and nurtured, where they would be encouraged to achieve their full potential. I envisioned a place that inspired people to be the best versions of themselves, for themselves. How did you go about it? Being an entrepreneur, that too in the late-eighties, was an uphill journey for me. Not only was the beauty and wellness services industry in its infancy, people were unwilling to take my work seriously as I was a woman. While people were familiar with the ubiquitous ‘beauty parlour’, the idea of a holistic wellness solutions provider which combined scientific weight management programs with advanced skin and hair treatments was new. Being in what was largely an unorganised mom-and-pop shop kind of sector, I struggled to raise capital – private equity was a relatively alien concept, and banks were wary of something that was hardly deemed as scalable and sustainable. We worked on developing a unique business model for the company, one which is widely used today (especially in the hospitality industry), called infrastructure facility management. That was the turning point in the business. In 2004, VLCC received its first private equity investment from CLSA. VLCC received the second round of PE funding in 2007 from Everstone Capital. I had to be persistent and assertive to convince people about the value proposition of my business. It took a while to convince them that my venture had a scalable, sustainable business model. Finally, patience and hard work paid off. How do you handle the fierce competition? It makes more than just a great idea for one to stand out from the crowd. A great product, consistently excellent service delivery and maintaining quality are key. Equally important is constant research and innovation. The idea is to give your customers what they don’t know that they want and yet when they see it their latent need awakens. It’s a challenge, but equally satisfying. Wellness is a knowledge-driven business where the wealth of knowledge an organisation accumulates is not just what differentiates it from its competitors but, more importantly, ensures its sustainability. Zeba Zaidi, CEO & co-founder, Volano Entertainment Pvt Ltd Driven by the passion for sports, Zeba launched India’s first participative sports firm, Volano Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. Under Volano, she directed the execution of some of the most path-breaking sports properties like the Devils Circuit, Devils Ciruit Swift Challenge and GameOnIndia. A sports enthusiast and a huge Arsenal fan, Zeba completed her graduation from Lady Shri Ram College, but later moved to London and lived there for over a decade before returning to India. With her keen eye for detail, Zeba ensures every activity – right from the marketing initiatives to on-ground events are executed to perfection. Her rich expertise spans over 16 years in sales and marketing with Fortune 1000 companies across UK, Europe & UAE and it has proved instrumental in the success of Volano in such a short span. What prompted you to be an entrepreneur? Becoming an entrepreneur was a sheer stroke of luck. I moved back to India in 2011. It was with an aim to revive my corporate career which had centred around the sales vertical spanning multiple geographies and industries. I had taken a three year sabbatical to spend time with my young children and was ready to leap back into work. Having spent years overseas though had inculcated a deep love of participative sports in my family and it was a lack of playing opportunities in India that pushed me into thinking about this niche. The more I spent time talking to like-minded people about wanting to play weekend sport, the more I realised the great opportunity that lay in this space. Eventually, I took the plunge and with a vision of building a participative sports organisation, I started Volano. How did you go about it? Volano Entertainment Pvt Ltd is situated in the space of Sportainment. The idea behind Volano was to combine active sports and entertainment. We thought of creating properties which provide unique opportunities to engage in participative sports and at the same time create memorable experiences for our customers. The decision to get into sports as a business was a very risky one, given that we moved opposite to the trend of professional sporting leagues, by getting into the amateur space. When we started out in 2011, there were absolutely no players in this category and that is what was most exciting. I think very few businesses have the opportunity of creating a market for themselves and we were fortunate enough to be in that situation. The idea is to maximise the first mover advantage with constant innovation and growth and that’s what we have been focused on ever since. Our flagship brand, The Devils Circuit, is India’s first and biggest Obstacle running series that is an annual event. With a social media community of over half a million enthusiasts, we take pride in the fact that this community is built out of sheer passion and love for sports and fitness. This year’s season began in October and has seen the Devils Circuit hosted across Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Mohali and Mumbai. We will culminate the season in Noida on March 13. How do you handle the fierce competition? I guess the most important factor when it comes to dealing with competition is to constantly innovate. In today’s world where everything is changing at a super fast pace whether it is the consumers’ interest in a brand, the advent of a new fad or new technology platforms serving innovating engagement platforms; the key is to stand out from the clutter. For me competition is not other players in my industry, I enjoy a first mover’s advantage and stay ahead by consistently adding new elements to my sports properties. The real competition is everything that would prohibit a potential consumer from using my services. This competition I deal with at 3 levels- first, I ensure a fantastic experience that participants remember and talk about, second, I constantly innovate to ensure that what we are offering at Volano stays fresh and third and most importantly, I look at competition as an impetus that drives me to give my best every single time. Puja Bansal, founder and director, MyHeera.com A certified diamond grader, Puja launched herself in 1998 as a brand under Khandelwal Jewellers Ltd (KJL), a famous jewellery brand known for its strong legacy. Known for her creativity and innovative designs, Puja has been actively involved in manufacturing, retailing, designing and has showcased her expertise in several events and fashion shows in India and abroad. Her keen interest in jewellery and her passion for designing led her to introduce Myheera.com, a unique online platform presenting itself as a virtual world of a globally connected business to business stage for the Gems & Jewellery industry. Puja brings with her an extensive industry experience of over 17 years. What prompted you to be an entrepreneur? I come from a family that’s being in the jewellery business for over 60 years. We are into manufacturing of precious stone jewellery for the European and American market. I belong to the third generation. and have 17 years of experience. In the business, sourcing was always a challenge and had to be routed only through few offline exhibitions. This led me to launch my venture in 2014. With a strong knowledge in the industry and with the strong support of the promoters backgrounds, the project was taken aggressively. How did you go about it? The time and research that went into making the portal was more than two years of market survey by the promoters to check the need of a b2b platform for this industry. The result that we could see was that the industry which still runs on a touch and feel business model has now over a period of time matured enough to run transparent business model using today’s digital approach. The market statistics was gathered and we were shocked to see that such a vast industry which is robust and adds a good amount of value to the country’s GDP is only 4% organised and has a lot of scope for improvement. New B2B inquiries, sourcing and new buyers were limited to offline exhibitions with limited participants, limited time frame and limited space. There was a need in the industry to create a space which could accommodate the entire chain of manufacturer, retailers wholesalers, traders and service providers from large, medium and small enterprises to a single click search engine, generating leads through 24/7 online exhibition . How do you handle the fierce competition? Nothing comes easy specially in today’s digital world where your deliverables are very high. Initially, we were the first movers to bring this industry in one window for sourcing and solutions, and now, we are convincing the industry to participate online as the very nature of the industry is traditional. But since time has changed new generation has taken over and we see the market now available for a much healthy business environment. Competition is in a way needed somewhere and we are working hard to make this portal world’s best b2b for gems and jewellery segment. Ankita Seth, co-founder, Vista Rooms Ankita was a social activist who worked with various NGO’s. This led to a lot of travel and during her travels, she figured out that the budget hotel segment in the country is highly fragmented and everyone takes the discerning traveller for a ride to say the least. Vista Rooms was created with a intense, common intent to standardise budget hotels. The founders were similarly wired, which helped common synergies. Her travel experiences helped her realise a common dream to help travellers opting for budget accommodation. Today, she is instrumental in turning haveli’s in Rajasthan into boutique hotels and is the only women in the budget hotel segment. What prompted you to be an entrepreneur? During my stints with various corporates, travel formed an integral part of my profile. Since most corporates prefer putting up their employees in budgeted accommodation, I would eventually end up in a budget hotel. The budget hotels in India can be ridiculously fragmented and I would always wonder why there was no standardisation in the segment. Most of these hotels would paint a rosy picture on OTA portals and end up being a nightmare for travellers. I was aware of friends, colleagues and others who have had funny tales from budgeted stays. Vista Rooms was born out of an intent to standardise budgeted stays. How did you go about it? Amit Damani, Pranav Maheshwari and I started Vista Rooms in 2015. We were driven with a common intent to standardise budgeted stays and we started a small pilot project in Mumbai and Pune. We slowly started expanding and today, Vista Rooms has 800 + properties in 80+ locations in India. Vista Rooms also commands the largest inventory in Tier II, tier III cities. How do you handle the fierce competition? “You don’t compete to be rich, you create.” I firmly believe in this philosophy. Our biggest competitor is almost twice our size, however, in comparison to them, we took half the time to reach where we are today, and that depicts our aggressive growth. The competition in the budget hotel segment is fierce, but we focus on bettering and diversifying our product offerings. Vista Express which is our food delivery model and Vista Lounge which looks at business lounges are our recent launches.

One of the biggest issues many people have had with Windows 8 is that it automatically logs you into the Windows 8 Start screen rather than the traditional Windows desktop. For those people who do not want to use the Start screen and instead work off the desktop this change has been very frustrating. If this has been an issue for you, Windows 8.1 allows you to skip the Start screen and boot directly into the desktop. To do this, type Navigation when you are at the Windows Start screen to open a search for that word. When the search results appear, click on the Navigation properties result as shown in the image above. This will open the Taskbar and Navigation properties tab. At this screen, put a check mark in the Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in checkbox as indicated by the red arrow above. Once that checkbox is checked, click on the Apply button and then press the OK button. With this setting enabled, when you start your Windows 8 computer it will now automatically go to the desktop rather than the Windows 8 Start screen.

Nokia Security Center Berlin, powered by Nokia Threat Intelligence Lab, today released research findings showing that in the mobile networks, smartphones pulled ahead of Windows-based computers and laptops, now accounting for 60% of the malware activity observed in the mobile space. The Nokia Threat Intelligence Report also reveals an increase in iOS-based malware, growing sophistication of Android malware and the rising threat of mobile ransomware. The report examines general trends and statistics for malware infections in devices connected through mobile and fixed networks. Data is aggregated where Nokia malware detection technology is deployed, with more than 100 million devices covered. Nokia Threat Intelligence Report at a glance: Due to a decrease in adware activity, the overall infection rate in mobile networks declined from 0.75% to 0.49% on Windows-based PCs connected to the Internet via a mobile network in the second half of 2015. Adware is a software that automatically displays or downloads advertising material (often unwanted) when a user is online. In the same time period, smartphone infection rates increased and now account for 60% of infections detected in the mobile networks. Android continues to be the main mobile platform targeted For the first time since the report began, iOS-based malware – including XcodeGhost and FlexiSpy – is on the top 20 list. In October 2015 alone, iPhone malware represented 6% of total infections. The XcodeGhost malware was injected into apps through a compromised software development kit that was used by Chinese developers to create legitimate apps distributed via the Apple App Store. Apple has removed these apps from the Apple Store, but some malware remains active. Ransomware - malware that effectively holds a device hostage by encrypting data and then locking it - like CryptoLocker has been around for a while on Windows PCs, but 2015 saw several varieties attacking Android, as well. Recovery can only be achieved by paying the attacker a ransom fee via a prepaid cash voucher or with bitcoins. Mobile malware is becoming more sophisticated in the techniques it uses to persist on the device. It is becoming very difficult to uninstall and can even survive a factory reset. Kevin McNamee, head of the Nokia Threat Intelligence Lab, said: "Security is a very real concern for any device with an IP address, be it Android, iPhone or even a Windows PC connected to the mobile network. While Android infections continue to rise and become more sophisticated, the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report from late 2015 was the first time we saw iOS malware make our top 20 list, with XcodeGhost being the fourth most prevalent malware detected. We also saw a rise in a variety of ransomware apps that try to extort money by claiming to have encrypted the phone's data. Nokia's security approach reaches into the network to stop malware before getting to the device itself and before damage can occur." Did you know? The modern smartphone presents the perfect platform for corporate and personal espionage, information theft, denial of service attacks on businesses and governments, and banking and advertising scams. It can be used simply as a tool to photograph, film, record audio, scan networks and immediately transmit results to a safe site for analysis. Encryption technology has become an increasingly important feature for consumers in the wake of recent NSA paying revelations. People have only become more conscious of its value as the FBI and Apple continue their legal battle over an encrypted iPhone. Amazon has come out in favor of strong encryption, but at the same time, an update to its Kindle Fire devices has removed the option to encrypt the internal storage. Amazon’s Fire devices are based on Android, but not the same flavor of Android that you’d find on most devices. Amazon uses a fork of Android from the Android Open Source Project. It doesn’t work with Google to certify its devices and integrate Google Play Services or apps like Gmail and Maps. Instead, Amazon runs its own (smaller) app store and plugs in content like Kindle Books, Audible, and Amazon Music. Android has had support for encryption at its core ever since Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. That was released way back in 2011, and has been improved over the years as subsequent versions of Android have been released. Amazon supported encryption in Fire OS all the way up to v5.0 (based on Android 5.1), which started to roll out pre-installed on fifth generation Fire tablets a few months ago. We’ve confirmed that Amazon has indeed removed this feature from the OS, but why have people suddenly noticed? In addition to those new tablets shipping with Fire OS, the company has recently started pushing updates to fourth generation Fire tablets. If you had your tablet encrypted on Fire OS 4, the updater will make you decrypt before installing. Many have jumped to the conclusion that Amazon is trying to get on the government’s good side by removing the option to encrypt its tablets. Indeed, the timing of these updates is unfortunate. Just when the FBI starts pressuring firms to create encryption workarounds, Amazon is forcing people to decrypt their tablets to update. But again, Fire OS 5 first shipped on new tablets months ago, so the decision to drop encryption was not a direct result of the current fight. Having a non-encrypted tablet means the data stored on it could be copied without the owner’s consent. It also prevents some managed Exchange accounts from working. We’ve reached out to Amazon for clarification on why encryption was removed, and the company says consumers simply weren’t using encryption. Okay, but why risk the bad press for removing it? If I were to speculate (Amazon won’t speak further about it), Fire tablets are mainly content-consumption devices — most owners aren’t keeping a lot of personal data on them. Additionally, the recent Fire devices are running low-power MediaTek ARM chips. Without dedicated hardware support, there’s a performance impact from full-disk encryption. Amazon might have been fielding a lot of support complaints from users with laggy encrypted tablets. Amazon’s decision to pull encryption is certainly an annoyance, especially on devices that previously supported it. However, it’s probably not being done at the behest of a shadowy government conspiracy.

In the Vedas, fire or Agni is treated as a living creature as it is hungry for food. It feeds on wood and ghee! Through smoke, Agni transports the offerings made by humans to devas, gods who live above in the sky. He is guided by the hymns chanted during the ritual. When devas are pleased with the offerings, they give the humans whatever they hunger for. Hunger thus binds humans and gods. Humans feed gods and gods feed humans. This mutual feeding is the essence of yagna, the Vedic ritual, that finds mention in the very first verse of the oldest Veda, the Rig Veda. Food or bhoga is critical to any understanding of Hindu philosophy. Contrast the Vedic gods with the Vedic hermits, the tapasvis, who do not eat, who consume neither food nor sensory stimulations. These tapasvis do not care for outer fire or agni, but they generate on their own inner fire, tapas, through the ritual of tapasya. The gods fear them. Indra, king of devas, fears they will topple him from his celestial throne. So he sends apsaras or damsels to enchant these hermits, and make them lose control, and succumb to the hunger of the flesh. Thus, we see the tension between satisfaction of hunger (bhoga) and outgrowing hunger (yoga), which forms the cornerstone of Hindu philosophy. The temple traditions tilt towards the former. The monastic orders, including Jainism and Buddhism, tilt towards the latter. Thus, feeding gods is a critical part of puja, while fasting of devotees is a critical part of vrata. We can see how hunger and its satisfaction through food forms the building block of most Hindu rituals. The ancients realised that hunger is what distinguishes the animate (jiva) from the inanimate (ajiva). Plants are hungry. Animals are hungry. Humans are hungry. But human hunger is unique: we can restrain it or amplify it. We can choose not to eat and feed others. We can choose to eat while others starve. The act of yagna makes us feed others and hope that the other feeds us; thus it forces us to be generous, and have faith in the other. Generosity and trust are the pillars of human civilisation. Without it there cannot be a healthy social structure. Thus, they contribute to dharma. Food, then, is about dharma (governance). It is also about artha (economics). It is also about kama (pleasure). But it entraps man, and so does not contribute to liberation (moksha). Eating make us part of the circle of life, for the act of consuming grants us life, while it means death of that which we consume. Plants consume the non-living, but animals and humans consume the living. Plants devour water, sunlight, air and earth; the elements do not fight back. Animals devour plants and others animals, who fight back. The fight back of animals is evident to all. Plants fight back in a more subtle manner: taking form of thorns, and keeping leaves out of reach of grazing animals. The ancient rishis (those who observe) noticed the fight for life: the killer and the killed. They realised without violence (bali) there cannot be food (bhog). The act of violence creates karma. Thus, the seed of karma is hunger. Buddha described hunger as desire, and the cause of suffering. To be truly happy, we have to outgrow desire, and hence, hunger for food. But that also means end of the body, the end of identity, nirvana! Devdutt Pattanaik is a renowned author, mythologist, and leadership consultant, whose work focuses on deriving management insights from mythology to reveal a very Indian approach to modern business. He has authored over 30 books, many of them best-sellers like Myth = Mithya, Business Sutra, The Pregnant King, and Jaya: An illustrated retelling of the Mahabharata.
