Spain's Deputy PM Soraya Saenz de Santamaria is now officially in charge of Catalonia

The Spanish government has stripped Catalonia of its autonomy and taken charge of its government.

The measures early on Saturday came after the Catalan parliament voted to declare independence on Friday.

An official state bulletin dismissed Catalan leaders and handed control of Catalonia to Spain's Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria.

Earlier, Spain's interior ministry took charge of Catalonia's police after firing senior Catalan police officials.

On Friday, PM Mariano Rajoy announced the dissolution of the regional parliament and the removal of the Catalan leader, and called snap local elections.

Demonstrations for and against independence went on into the night. A large rally "for the unity of Spain and the constitution" is being held in Madrid.

The crisis began when Catalan leaders held an independence referendum, defying a ruling by the Constitutional Court which had declared it illegal.

The Catalan government said that of the 43% of potential voters who took part, 90% were in favour of independence. Others boycotted the vote after the court ruling.

    What are the latest developments?

On Friday afternoon, the Catalan regional parliament voted to declare independence from Spain.

Soon after, the Spanish Senate granted Mr Rajoy's government the power to impose direct rule on Catalonia.

It did so early on Saturday by publishing an official bulletin (in Spanish) that dismissed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and all government members.

The announcement came hours after the Madrid government removed Josep Lluís Trapero Álvarez as chief of Catalonia's autonomous Mossos police force.

Mr Trapero was already under investigation for sedition, accused of failing to help Spain's Guardia Civil police tackle thousands of pro-independence protesters in Barcelona during the run-up to the referendum.

Pere Soler i Campins, the Mossos director general, has also been dismissed.

The BBC's Sarah Rainsford, in Madrid, said that implementing the changes is likely to be a complex process for Spanish authorities - and one bound to be met with stiff resistance from those who just voted for independence.

Regional elections are scheduled for 21 December.

Mr Puigdemont has urged supporters to "maintain the momentum" in a peaceful manner, but Spanish prosecutors say they will file charges of "rebellion" against him next week.

Separatists say the independence move means they no longer fall under Spanish jurisdiction.

But the Spanish Constitutional Court is likely to declare it illegal, while the EU, the US, the UK, Germany and France all expressed support for Spanish unity.

    What powers did Catalonia have?

Before Madrid took over the Catalan government, the region had one of the greatest levels of self-government in Spain.

It has its own parliament, police force and public broadcaster, as well as a government and president, though those have now been dismissed.

Catalans had a range of powers in many policy areas from culture and environment to communications, transportation, commerce and public safety.

Foreign affairs, the armed forces and fiscal policy were always the sole responsibility of the Spanish government.

    What's the reaction been?

Thousands celebrated the declaration of independence on the streets of Barcelona, Catalonia's regional capital.

The same crowds that cheered each Yes vote from Catalan MPs reportedly booed Mr Rajoy as he made his announcement.

There were pro-unity demonstrations too, with protesters in Barcelona waving Spanish flags and denouncing Catalan independence. A large pro-unity rally is expected in Madrid on Saturday.

    In other reaction:

    • Barcelona's mayor Ada Colau condemned the move by Madrid, but also criticised Catalan pro-independence parties for "advancing at a kamikaze pace...after their mistaken reading of the results of the Catalan elections"
    • EU President Donald Tusk said Madrid's government "remains our only interlocutor" in Spain, but called for restraint
    • The UK government said it did not recognise the declaration of independence by Catalonia.

    How did we get here?

After the 1 October referendum, Mr Puigdemont signed a declaration of independence but delayed implementation to allow talks with the Spanish government.

He ignored warnings by the Madrid government to cancel the move, prompting Mr Rajoy to first announce his plans to remove Catalan leaders and impose direct rule.

    • Reality Check: Police violence in Catalonia

Catalonia is one of Spain's richest, most distinctive regions, with a high degree of autonomy.

Many Catalans feel they pay more to Madrid than they get back, and there are historical grievances, too, in particular Catalonia's treatment under the dictatorship of General Franco. But Catalans have been divided on the question of independence.

  2. Zlatan Ibrahimovic says Romelu Lukaku's form for Manchester United will ease the pressure on his own "comeback".

Lukaku's prolific start to the season - 11 goals in 14 games - has spearheaded United's challenge for the Premier League, while they have also begun their Champions League campaign with three wins from three.

Ibrahimovic meanwhile has been undergoing rehabilitation for a serious knee injury, which cut short his debut season at Old Trafford in April.

The Swede, who shouldered much of the goalscoring burden for United last season, knows he will face stiff competition from the Belgian for a starting spot when he returns to match fitness.

However, ahead of United's home clash against Tottenham on Saturday - live on Sky Sports Premier League - Ibrahimovic told Thierry Henry that he only sees the positives from Lukaku's start to the campaign.

Romelu Lukaku has scored 11 goals in 14 games for Man United this season

"The team is stronger this season," Ibrahimovic said. "Lukaku is in the team scoring a lot of goals, and he is making the job easier for me, because last year when we were playing we could not change that role.

"We had one scoring the goals, and doing that job, and there was no variations for the coach. This season it is easier. Lukaku is only positive, because he makes my "comeback" less pressured, it gives me a lot of time, and I'm happy for that.

The more time I get, the better it gets. He's scoring his goals and doing what he needs to do.

"When I come back, the coach is there, we will see how things go.

"I see it very strong. Because the more quality we have in the team, the more alternatives we have, the easier it is for the manager."

  4. Juan Mata talks Liverpool, his form and explains why there is such a positive mood in the Manchester United dressing room

Juan Mata insists there is no game in football like Manchester United against Liverpool ahead of their meeting on Sky Sports on Saturday.

United go to Anfield on Saturday unbeaten so far in the Premier League, while Liverpool have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions, with the match live on Sky Sports Premier League from 11.30am.

Mata has fond memories of Anfield, having scored twice in a 2-1 win there in the 2014/15 season, including a spectacular scissor kick.

And the Spaniard admits he is feeling the buzz ahead of Saturday's game, and says he still gets regularly reminded about his contribution to that win in 2015.

Asked if it is United's biggest game, Mata said: "I believe so, since I came here I always knew the rivalry was big over the years. Everyone in the training ground, fans in the street, they remind you that Liverpool is the game.

    skysports-juan-mata-soccerex_4093062.jpg

As of last month, Mata has been fronting the launch of charity 'Common Goal'

"There is no game like this. Through the history there have been great games, big rivalries, and it is a special game to play in, and we feel very lucky to have the chance to play in these games.

"The view from Spain I think is that all of the big Premier League games are viewed similarly. Once you are in England you realise United v Liverpool stands out.

"I have pretty good memories from our games against Liverpool. Every United supporter even now, after a few years, remind me of that goal. When you play for United and score at Anfield and win the game, it stays in peoples' minds."

Mata has impressed this season for United, who are unbeaten

United are sure to experience an intense atmosphere at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime, but Mata says his side can control the emotions of the crowd if they approach the game in the correct way.

"It's tough. It's a tough atmosphere. Obviously, the stadium is full of supporters wanting their team to go over us and win. That's what makes football special. Not speaking about violence at all, but about the atmosphere. You have to have personality to play in these games.

"If we manage to impose ourselves in the game to control the emotions from the crowd, and play good football, I think we have a chance to win."

Mata scored an acrobatic goal against Liverpool at Anfield in 2015

As of last month, Mata has been fronting the launch of charity 'Common Goal', donating one per cent of his salary to the cause, with other professional footballers joining him.

The 29-year-old says the charity was necessary and says there will be further announcements of more players getting on board in the coming weeks.

"It's been great, it's a really inspiring movement and project. It's nice to see how football has welcomed it, some fellow players and media, and people that make decisions in football.

"I have [received a lot of interest from players]. We have announced many players, and still have many players to announce in the coming weeks. The reception has been great and I'm really thrilled about what Common Goal means for so many people.

"I think something like this was needed. We are privileged people, we are in a lucky position, and so many people in the world are not as lucky as us."

  5. Slovenia 2-2 Scotland: Dramatic draw sees Scotland pipped to second by Slovakia

Scotland's hopes of reaching the World Cup play-offs ended with a 2-2 draw in Slovenia, as Slovakia ran out 3-0 winners over Malta to secure second in Group F.

Leigh Griffiths had Scottish fans dreaming at half-time after his volley from a narrow angle fired in off the post (32) but substitute Roman Bezjak turned the game on its head with two goals (52, 72) as Slovenia grew stronger in the second half.

Robert Snodgrass' late equaliser (88) set up a tense finale, but Scotland could not find the all-important winner despite coming close twice in the dying minutes and seeing Bostjan Cesar sent off for the hosts (90+2).

Islamabad | A Pakistani couple united in an arranged marriage over 24 years ago has just learned that they are in fact, brother and sister.

The siblings, who were separated at youth after the tragic death of their parents, were later adopted by different families until they were later reunited and promised to each other believing that they were cousins.

It is only 24 years later that their grandmother found the strength to tell them the truth days before she passed away.
