Scientists hope their rediscovery will help protect the De Winton's golden mole's habitat, which is threatened by diamond mining. De Winton's Golden Mole. Scientists are making a mountain out of a mole hill after finding a rare breed of sightless burrowing mammal not seen for the better part of a century. Researchers spent two years searching the sand hills of South Africa for a critically endangered blind mole that navigates burrows using its sharp hearing and sensitivity to vibrations, the mole hunt team said in a press release this week. De Winton's golden mole was last seen 87 years ago on Port Nolloth beach, a mile long sandy stretch of South Africa's northwest coast. Its survival is threatened by diamond mining in the coastal sands of its habitat, according to the IUCN Red List. The team of scientists from the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and the University of Pretoria that rediscovered the mole hope their findings will help turn Port Nolloth beach into a protected area. "The search for De Winton’s golden mole was not easy by any means," Christina Biggs, a manager for the campaign which helped find De Winton's mole, said in the release. "They left no sandhill unturned and now it’s possible to protect the areas where these threatened and rare moles live." The scientists searched up to 11 miles of dune habitat a day to find the mole, Esther Matthew, a senior field officer with the EWT, said in the release. The "golden" part of the mole's name comes from the iridescent appearance of its fur coat, which secretes oil to make it easier for the mole to almost "swim" through sand. The rediscovery of the mole is part of a campaign to search for lost species launched in 2017 by the nature charity Global Wildlife Conservation, which has been renamed Re:Wild. The project won a Guinness World Record in 2020 for the number of species it is looking for: Over 2000 species of animals, plants and fungi that have not been seen in at least 10 years. De Winton's golden mole was ranked number 11 on Re:Wild's "25 Most Wanted" species list. The list also includes Attenborough's Long-Beaked echidna, a bizarre-looking egg laying mammal that researchers recently rediscovered in Indonesia. Border collies trained to sniff out golden moles helped the researchers find the trails the creatures left behind, the researchers said. The burrows were made more visible by rainfall. The scientists also relied heavily on a new technique called environmental DNA (eDNA), which locates animals using the skin cells, hair and other bodily excretions they shed when they move through an environment, Re:Wild said in a press release. Without eDNA, finding De Winton's golden mole would be extremely difficult. The creature rarely leaves its largely inaccessible burrows and can detect movements above ground through vibrations, Re: Wild said. Cobus Theron, a senior conservation manager for EWT that helped find the mole, said he never lost hope that De Winton’s golden mole was still out there. “I was convinced it would just take the right detection method, the proper timing, and a team passionate about finding it,” Theron said in the press release. “Now not only have we solved the riddle, but we have tapped into this eDNA frontier where there is a huge amount of opportunity not only for moles, but for other lost or imperiled species.” Aside from De Winton's golden mole, Re: Wild's "Search for Lost Species" has also led to the rediscovery of an endangered climbing yellow salamander in Guatemala, a miniature fanged deer in Vietnam and a rainbow-hued crab in Sierra Leone. Toyota unveils the Hilux Hybrid 48V, which will arrive as an option in 2024 This could ruffle a few feathers – the trusty, indestructible Toyota Hilux is going hybrid. Kinda. This is the new Hilux Hybrid 48V, a mild-hybrid pickup that will be introduced in Europe in mid-2024 and will be sold alongside the combustion-only iteration. Diesel isn’t dead yet, folks. The recipe is pleasingly simple too. Toyota has taken the Hilux’s standard 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel and paired it with a compact motor generator unit and a 48-volt lithium-ion battery. Said battery is mounted under the rear seats (the Hilux Hybrid is only available as a double cab) and weighs just 7.6kg. The result is the potential to send up to 16bhp and 48lb ft of torque through the motor generator back to the engine to aid acceleration, while also allowing for a more active stop-start system, which Toyota claims can improve fuel efficiency by up to five per cent. Not bad. It also reckons the mild-hybrid system actually improves the Hilux’s off-road performance. The motor generator power allows for smoother acceleration at slow speeds on rough terrain, while the regen braking can help with downhill descents. The engine’s idle speed also drops from 720rpm to 600rpm, which should allow for slightly better super slow speed control. There’s no compromise to the towing capability (3,500kg) or payload capacity (1,000kg) either. Oh, and the battery and converter have been fully waterproofed, so the Hilux Hybrid gets a decent wading depth of 700mm. Inside you get plenty of kit including an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, and there are new safety features like a pre-collision system, lane departure warnings and adaptive cruise control. Probably worth noting that Toyota still refers to this as one of its “most recognisable workhorse vehicles” too, so don’t think that this little bit of electrification means the Hilux is going soft. The Florida governor touted his campaign's efforts in Iowa on NBC’s “Meet the Press” six weeks ahead of the caucuses. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he would replace Obamacare with a "better plan" — part of an interview in which he criticized former President Donald Trump for failing to deliver on numerous policy promises during his term in the White House, including frequent pledges to replace the health care law. “Obamacare hasn’t worked,” DeSantis said in the interview with moderator Kristen Welker, which aired Sunday morning. “We are going to replace and supersede with a better plan.” He declined to provide details about how his plan would "supersede" Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, adding that his campaign would most likely roll out a proposal in the spring. DeSantis asserted that his plan would have "more transparency, more consumer choice, more affordable options, less red tape, less bureaucracy weighing everybody down." Trump said late last month that he was "seriously looking at alternatives" to Obamacare, prompting a sharp rebuke from President Joe Biden's campaign. "40 million people — more than 1 in 10 Americans — have health insurance today because of the Affordable Care Act and Donald Trump just said he would try to rip it away if he returns to power," Biden campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa has said in a statement. In 2017, the Republican-controlled Senate failed to pass a bill to repeal Obamacare by a slim two-vote margin. On Saturday, Democratic National Committee press secretary Sarafina Chitika blasted DeSantis' recent criticisms of Obamacare, saying in a statement that "if Ron DeSantis, Donald Trump, and MAGA Republicans have their way, they’d send premiums skyrocketing to line the pockets of greedy health care executives and their wealthy buddies." DeSantis called out Trump for bringing up repealing Obamacare as a campaign pledge after having said he would do it in his first term, too. "This is part of a pattern where he's running on things that he didn't do," DeSantis said, mentioning the border wall and other issues. "Here's what I will do. What I think they're going to need to do is have a plan that will supersede Obamacare that will lower prices for people so that they can afford health care while also making sure that people with pre-existing conditions are protected." All in on Iowa DeSantis was interviewed as he celebrated having held events in all 99 of Iowa’s counties, according to his campaign, while Trump has held events in only 13. DeSantis trails Trump nationally by about 40 points, according to a November poll by NBC News. Fifty-eight percent of GOP primary voters selected Trump as their first pick in the survey, followed by DeSantis at 18%. A plurality of Republican primary voters — 36% — said DeSantis would be their second pick. Pressed about whether he was committed to staying in the presidential race through the Iowa caucuses, DeSantis said it would be "absurd" that he would not remain, pointing out that previous candidates have won the Iowa caucuses but did not ultimately get their parties' nominations. DeSantis also drew a contrast between himself and Trump when he was asked about Trump's campaigning on retribution and commenting about jailing political enemies. "If he's running for personal retribution, that is not going to lead to what we need as a country," DeSantis said. "You got to be running for the American people and their issues, not about your own personal issues, and that is a distinction between us." DeSantis also pointed out that he would be eligible to serve two terms as president, in contrast to Trump, who has already served one term. "Republican voters are going to have the choice of Donald Trump, which I think would make the election a referendum on him and a lot of the issues that he’s dealing with — or me, and that will be a referendum on Biden’s failures, on all the issues in the country that are affecting people, and I’ll be able to stand for a positive vision going forward,” he said. “We have a much better chance if we’re doing it with me as the candidate." DeSantis brushed off questions about a six-week federal abortion ban Trump appointed three conservative justices to the Supreme Court, changing its political tilt. Last year, the court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that protected abortion rights nationwide. After the decision, DeSantis signed a six-week abortion ban into law in Florida in April — a move that appears to be out of step with the majority of voters, according to polling. A June poll from NBC News found that about 61% of voters disapproved of the Supreme Court’s decision. More than half of respondents also said abortion access nationwide was too difficult. Asked whether he would sign a six-week ban as president, DeSantis did not answer directly, saying, "Every state has a responsibility to have some limit." But he also argued that Congress would not "do any type of abortion legislation," rendering the question about what he would sign moot without explicitly saying he would not sign federal legislation. "Florida has protections when there's a heartbeat. Other states have done it differently," he said. "This is something that's going to be done in a bottom-up way. I recognize that." The reported shooting took place near the town of Avdiivka - Ukraine's eastern stronghold that has recently seen fierce fighting Ukraine has launched an investigation after a video emerged purportedly showing Russian troops killing two Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered. Ukrainian prosecutors say the footage shows "a group of people in Russian uniforms" shooting the unarmed Ukrainians at close range. The prosecutors say the killing of prisoners of war is a "gross violation" of the laws and customs of conflict. The video has not been independently verified. Russia has not commented. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, both Kyiv and Moscow have accused each other of violating the Geneva conventions - a set of international humanitarian laws regulating the conduct of armed conflict, and specifically the treatment of POWs. In a statement on Sunday, Ukraine's prosecutor general's office said a pre-trial investigation was launched "for violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder". It said the killing of POWs qualified as "a grave international crime". Preliminary data suggested that the shooting happened near the village of Stepove in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, the office added. It gave no details about who shot the video and when. The area has seen fierce fighting in recent weeks, as Russian troops have been attempting to seize the nearby town of Avdiivka - a Ukrainian stronghold just outside the Russian-held regional capital of Donetsk. In a separate statement on Sunday, Ukraine's military urged the world community to "condemn Russia's actions and bring to justice the military leadership of the aggressor country". Russia's military is yet to publicly comment on the allegations. What is known about the video The grainy footage was published by Ukraine's DeepStateUA Telegram channel on 2 December. It said the two Ukrainian soldiers were shot dead near Stepove, after Russian troops had seized the positions of Ukraine's 45th Rifle Battalion. DeepStateUA said the Ukrainian soldiers had been forced to surrender after running out of ammunition. The video itself purportedly shows a Ukrainian soldier coming out of a dugout to surrender. He is holding his hands on his head as what Ukraine says were Russian soldiers point their weapons at him. The Ukrainian soldier is then seen laying down on the ground face down, and a second Ukrainian soldier emerges from the dugout. None of them appear in the video to be armed. Just seconds later, the soldiers are seen opening fire on the Ukrainians, killing them both. Later that day, Ukrainian serviceman Oleksandr Kolym said the shot Ukrainians had been from his unit. And on Sunday, the head of Avdiivka's military administration, Vitaliy Barabash, told Ukraine's Freedom TV channel that those who had carried out the shooting were later "liquidated" in a Ukrainian attack. Mr Kolym and Mr Barabash provided no evidence to back their claims. In April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on world leaders to respond after a video emerged apparently showing a Ukrainian soldier being beheaded by a Russian serviceman. Russia said at the time that the footage was "awful" but its authenticity had to be checked as well as who was behind it. In March, Ukraine accused Russian soldiers of killing an unarmed Ukrainian soldier, who was videoed smoking a cigarette and shouting "Glory to Ukraine" before being gunned down. Late last year, Moscow accused Ukrainian forces of executing a group of Russian prisoners. It followed the emergence of a video from the front line in eastern Ukraine showing the apparent surrender of a number of soldiers in an incident that ends in their deaths.
