  2. Other Pictures For 100 years, innovation, style and mechanical dependability were the hallmarks of cars and trucks built by Dodge, making it one of America's greatest auto manufacturers. If you head a little north of South Bend, Indiana, you'll almost immediately traverse the state line that leads into Michigan. The first place you'll likely arrive is a little town called Niles. Two of its native sons make Niles, however small, a hugely important spot on the American map of automotive history. The Dodge brothers, Horace and John, are arguably the best-known citizens that Niles ever produced. The cars named for them have been a household word for a hundred years, the time span that's elapsed since the very first Dodge Brothers automobile was produced. Both brothers, who enjoyed an uncommonly deep fraternal bond, were not just close siblings but lifetime business partners. Both died within months of one another in 1920. At their deaths, the car they created trailed only Ford in terms of annual unit sales.
  3. Diet and well being blogger Judith Wills looks at some long-term research investigating the fives best lifestyle changes you can make for a longer, healthier life. Visit our health section for more health news and features. I always feel pathetically grateful when I find solid long-term research about longevity and healthy lifestyle being headlined in the media, rather than the usual glut of craziness and/or irrelevancy we're normally fed. A bit earlier this month, the results of a 35-year British study were published, which showed conclusively that the way to prolong life, and to ensure what life you have is less illness-riddled and more enjoyable, is to do five simple, and quite obvious things: take regular exercise, eat sensibly, maintain a reasonable weight, drink minimal alcohol and don't smoke. Yes – we all knew that, really, didn't we – but it is reassuring to know that a team of researchers has been monitoring 2500 people all those years on our behalf. They found that making smallish lifestyle changes can result in reducing the risk of the major killer diseases by up to 70%. The people in the study who followed the 'five rules' reduced their risk of heart attack, stroke and dementia by 60%, of diabetes by 70% and of cancer by 40%. The Department of Health, commenting on the results, said “This study won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but it is a stark reminder that having a healthy lifestyle really can impact on a long, fulfilling life.” No surprise, but such a welcome change from this sort of headline that I've read in the past couple of weeks: “Having rows with your spouse can make you fat” “Eating at work makes us fat” “Piling on the pounds? Blame it on jet lag” If we're ever going to win the weight and health war, we need to get real – and realize that even if we venture onto a plane, have a desk lunch or even a bit of a set-to with the husband or wife, we can still stick to the tried and tested rules at least most of the time, and give ourselves a chance. Meanwhile, I continue with my anti-inflammatory/weight loss diet, which is very easy to stick to as there are so many foods I love that I can eat without worrying. I've only lost 2lbs so far – in about two weeks – but that's okay. Six pounds more before Christmas and I'll be happy, and I'll be even more happy if I see an improvement in any of my inflammatory symptoms. Certainly, my red, dry and irritated eyes seem around 50% better already. Here's a simple sauce/side dish that's easy to make, contains all the right things and will go with a variety of meats and fishes. Try it with white fish (as I did), adding a few anchovies from a jar if you like; or with chicken, adding some basil instead of the parsley, or with a pork steak, perhaps stirring in some smoked paprika. All-purpose very healthy Mediterranean-type savoury sauce recipe To serve 2-3, roughly chop 1 beef tomato (or halve a handful of small tomatoes), 2 sun dried tomato halves, 2 or 3 pieces of grilled sweet pepper from a jar, 1 red jalapeno chilli, 2 cloves garlic and 8 stoned kala[CENSORED] olives and put in a smallish frying pan. Add a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, 2 tsp Moroccan tagline paste (optional – or try a squeeze of lemon juice), 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley, 1 tbsp pine nuts, a small pinch of salt and some black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, over medium heat for 10 minutes and serve with your chosen grilled, baked, roast or pan-fried meat or fish. 7. The company bought Nokia’s mobile device business a few months ago and this week dropped the Nokia branding on its first Microsoft Lumia smartphone the Microsoft Lumia 535. The Microsoft Lumia 535... Unfortunately, that might be the biggest news about this phone. Although it’s available worldwide in both single- and dual-SIM variants, the Lumia 535 isn’t especially noteworthy: Microsoft calls it a “5x5x5” phone, available for about 110 euro ($136.70) in local currencies. That’s a catchy way of highlighting the 535’s 5-inch qHD display (960x540 pixels). The second “5,” according to Microsoft, is the 5MP, wide-angle, front-facing camera—most likely the same front-facing camera that’s installed on the Lumia 735. ...And the all-important Microsoft label on the back. The final “5” refers to the “five great integrated Microsoft experiences” included on the phone: built-in Skype integration, the per-installed Microsoft Office suite, 15GB of free One Drive cloud storage, the Cortana digital assistant, and Microsoft Outlook. “Innovation should be available to everyone, and we are doing this through the very best integrated Microsoft services free and out-of-the-box, a 5 MP wide-angle front-facing camera and a spacious 5 inch, qHD screen – all at an affordable price,” said Jo Harlow, corporate vice president for phones at Microsoft, in a statement. According to Microsoft, the Lumia 535 measures 140.2 x 72.45 x 8.8 mm and weighs 146 grams. Inside is a relatively weak Qualcomm 200 CPU, 1GB of memory, and 8GB of storage. It does include a 128GB microSD card slot, however. Microsoft estimates that the 1,905 mAh removable battery will allow for GSM talk time of up to 11 hours. All in all, the Lumia 535 probably won’t be the phone that lures the masses to the Windows Phone platform. Although the Lumia 830’s front-facing “selfie” camera is woefully underpowered, I prefer it. One app that the 830 includes, dubbed Lumia Selfie, allows you to use the rear-facing camera. That overcomes the 830’s limitation rather nicely. (Although the 830 is “cheaper” at $99 with a two-year contract, you’ll be paying AT&T a total of $450, in installments.) Why this matters: Last month, Microsoft said that it would ditch the Nokia brand to eliminate confusion in the market following the company’s $7 billion acquisition of the technology. (Nokia still exists as a company, but it focuses on networking equipment and its HERE mapping technology.) But the Nokia name will live on in low-end phones. In any case, Microsoft needs to establish itself as both the owner of the Nokia brand as well as the ecosystem that powers it. A Microsoft label is the natural place to begin.

  11. Falling gas prices improved buyers' moods and boosted sales of SUVs and trucks in October. GM, Toyota, Chrysler, Nissan, Volkswagen and Honda all reported sales gains last month. Only Ford's sales fell 2 percent as it cut back on F-Series pickup sales ahead of the launch of a new F-150 later this year. Analysts expected industry sales to rise 6 percent over last October. The national average price of gasoline fell 33 cents to end October at $3 a gallon, according to AAA. Gasoline is now the cheapest it has been in four years, and the decline accelerated a trend toward SUVs and trucks that has been going on all year. "Gas prices coming down added a little bit of fuel to the fire, but that fire was already roaring," said Alec Gutierrez, a senior analyst with Kelley Blue Book. Small SUVs have been the fastest growing segment in the U.S. this year, and now make up one out of every four vehicles sold, says Jesse Toprak, the chief sales analyst for the car buying site Cars.com. But gas prices fueled sales of bigger SUVs. Kelley Blue Book saw renewed interested in the mammoth Hummer H1 last month, for example. Sales of the recently redesigned Lincoln Navigator eight-passenger SUV jumped 38 percent, while Chevrolet Tahoe sales rose 6 percent. Gas prices also convinced small business owners to go ahead and buy pickup trucks, Toprak said. GMC Sierra sales jumped 12.5 percent in October. Ram pickup sales were up 33 percent. Fuel economy is no longer top of mind for most buyers, according to annual survey taken by J.D. Power and Associates in June. Last year it ranked No. 3 on the list of reasons why people buy cars. This year it dropped to No. 6 behind reliability, styling, brand preference, ride and handling, reputation and price. As a result, hybrid sales are suffering. Sales of Ford's C-Max hybrid dropped 22.5 percent in October, while Toyota Prius sales were down 13.5 percent. But sales of some small cars rose. Lower gas prices can help first-time buyers and others feel comfortable enough to buy a new car. Sales of the newly redesigned Honda Fit subcompact were up 83 percent in October, for example, while sales of the Nissan Sentra small car rose 56 percent. "Lower gas prices are actually a tide that floats all ships," said Jessica Caldwell, a senior analyst with the car buying site Edmunds.com. General Motors' overall U.S. sales rose just 0.2 percent to 226,819. Chevy Cruze compact car sales were up 51 percent, largely due to increases in fleet sales to governments and rental car companies. Ford's car sales declined 11.5 percent to 188,654, but Escape SUV sales rose 12 percent. Chrysler said its U.S. sales rose 22 percent to 170,480 for its best October since 2001. The red-hot Jeep brand led the way with a 52 percent increase over a year ago. Toyota said it set an SUV sales record in October thanks to a 22-percent gain for its RAV4 small SUV, and a 30-percent jump in sales of the Highlander mid-size SUV. Toyota's sales were up 7 percent overall. Nissan, Honda and Subaru all reported their best October sales ever, fueled by demand for their small SUVs. Nissan sales were up 13 percent to 103,000, with the Frontier small pickup chalking up a 25-percent gain. Honda's sales rose nearly 6 percent to 121,172, with a 30-percent gain for the CR-V small SUV. Subaru's sales jumped 25 percent to 43,012. Sales of the Outback small SUV rose 55 percent. Hyundai's sales dropped 6.5 percent. While sales of its Tucson SUV rose 44 percent, that wasn't enough to offset sagging sales of its Sonata and Elantra sedans. Sales should remain strong through November and December and close out the year at 16.5 million, up 6 percent from 2013, Toprak says. He says buyers should look for big discounts in small cars as well as full-size trucks and SUVs for the remainder of the year.
  12. TIJUANA — Since the expansion of vehicle inspection booths at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, overall wait times at the busy border crossing dropped from 60 to 75 percent when compared with the same period last year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. After years of congestion — and peak weekend waits that could stretch to four hours or more — the drop in the vehicle wait times since rebuilt lanes opened in mid-September has been creating hope for more jobs, increased tourism and greater educational and cultural exchanges. “The residents of this region have long yearned for this,” Tijuana Mayor Jorge Astiazaran said Monday during a mid morning ceremony at the port, pointing out short lines of waiting vehicles in the general lanes outside. The scene would have been unthinkable just a couple of months ago at the busy port, where 11 million entering vehicles were processed in fiscal 2014 — one of every eight personal vehicles that entered the United States. The gathering inside the new head house overlooking the port included diplomats, legislators and business leaders who applauded completion of a key phase in the $741 million reconstruction of the San Ysidro port. It includes not only the expansion of northbound inspection capacity to 25 lanes with 46 booths, but also the rebuilding of the secondary inspection area, the opening of a narcotics building and auto seizure area, and the construction of a structure for port operations. Since all rebuilt lanes were opened in mid-September, drivers in the general lanes have seen the shortest lines in years. Peak weekend waits that could stretch to two to four hours are frequently down to 40 minutes. The drop in overall wait times were cited for drivers in the general lanes and Ready Lanes (drivers with U.S. passport cards and other radio-frequency identification documents). Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego, also said that “we have seen a tick up in the number of crossers,” while the numbers of northbound drivers at the Stay Mesa border crossing has dropped, suggesting that some drivers are now switching where they cross. Among those crossing Monday morning was Santiago Duarte, who was heading from Tijuana to his job in San Diego. “It’s less stress; you’re a lot happier,” said Duarte, all smiles behind the wheel of his car. His wait in the general lanes Monday was about 25 minutes, a far cry from previous wait times of up to 3½ hours. The reconstruction of the port of entry is a three-phase project being overseen by the U.S. General Services Administration. Congress has funded two of the phases, and President Barack Obama has included $216 million for the final phase in his proposed budget for fiscal 2015.
  13. The blistering pace of recent car sales has been one of the U.S. economy’s more bullish indicators. There’s new evidence that the auto industry is even hotter than many thought. The car world tends to focus on units sold, which is to say the total number of vehicles rolling out of dealerships during any given period. This year, Americans are on pace to buy about 16.4 million vehicles, a 6 percent increase from 2013 and the most purchased in the nation since 2006. Here’s the development no one is mentioning: Americans are spending a whole lot more money per car. Since 2009 the annual revenue from U.S. car sales has surged 61 percent, to $522 billion, according to analysis from TrueCar (TRUE), an online platform that connects car buyers with dealerships. As a result, the average cost of a new vehicle sold has surged from $31,077 to $31,798. True Car President John Krafcik, formerly the chief executive officer of Hyundai North America (005380:KS), has been preaching about this purchasing power as he makes the rounds in Detroit. He says analysts are underestimating the health of the U.S. auto industry. “It’s extraordinarily relevant that people are willing to pay more for automobiles,” he told Bloomberg Businessweek. “Especially when the narrative has largely been that cars are playing less of a role in our lives.” So why all of a sudden are we, as a nation, car shopping like 20 percenters? Four factors are at play: Story: The Tesla Rorschach Test: Figuring Out Which Numbers Matter 1. Supersize. We’ve developed a weakness for bigger vehicles, and those tend to cost more. So-called crossovers have been one of the fastest-growing car segments in history, luring millions of buyers who once would have bought a standard sedan. “All other things being equal, Americans want a bigger car if they can get one,” Krafcik says. Big and swanky is even better. In the first nine months of this year, large luxury SUVs such as the Lincoln Navigator and the Infiniti QX80 have sold faster than anything else. 2. The upsell. Drivers are paying more for cars in part because they’re getting more from cars. Sophisticated navigation, entertainment, and safety features are standard pretty much across-the-board. Not only was there less of that stuff eight to 10 years ago, but it was typically tacked onto the list of options. Ford Motor (F)’s starter car, the Focus, comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, a rear-view camera, and seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knees. The expensive extras go all the way up the luxury chain. A 2006 Escalade cost about $10,000 less than the 2015 version, even after adjusting for inflation, in part because the latest model has cooled seats, a heads-up display, and a dashboard that charges cell phones without wires. 3. Cheap money. The effective Federal Funds rate in November 2006 was 5.2 percent. Today, it’s virtually zero. Thanks in part to low interest rates, plenty of new cars can be had with no interest payments for five years. In the petrol-addled brain of a car buyer, that means more cash can be spent on the vehicle itself. Story: Patagonia Will Start Paying for Homeowners' Solar Panels 4. The rich get richer. Any average can be skewed by extremes, and the very top of the car market has grown a lot longer in recent years. Sure, there were always cars for the super-rich set, but there are quite a few auto makers shifting into seven-figure territory these days. Porsche’s hottest sports car, the 918 Spyder, starts at about $850,000. Ferrari has a limited-edition machine that commands somewhere around $1.35 million. Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, is welding armor plates onto a new supersedan, an incarnation of its famous Pullman model, that will sell for $1 million. A Family Truckster, it’s not.
  14. MAHWAH, New Jersey — The 2016 Jaguar F-Type R coupe featuring standard all-wheel drive will debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show and arrive at Jaguar's U.S dealerships next spring, Jaguar Land Rover said on Thursday. Pricing was not announced. Full details on the 2016 F-Type model range will be revealed on November 19. The F-Type model range will grow from six to 12 derivatives in the 2016 model year. The F-Type R with what Jaguar is calling "instinctive" all-wheel drive sprints from zero-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph. The new model is designed to "provide F-Type R drivers with improved traction and confidence in a variety of road conditions," the automaker said. It also makes the F-Type, which was all-new for 2014, more competitive against the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911 and Porsche Booster. "Our target with engineering the all-wheel-drive F-Type was to maintain the engaging rear-drive character that's so important to Jaguar sports cars, yet offer even greater dynamic capability," said Ian Hoban, Jaguar vehicle line director, in a statement. The upcoming Los Angeles auto show will also host the North American debut of the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport compact SUV. The automaker also said it will make a new technology announcement for its in-car infotainment system at the Connected Car Expo, which is held in conjunction with the auto show. Edmunds says: Car shoppers in the Snow Belt should be thrilled about an all-wheel-drive version of the Jaguar F-Type R.
