  2. For years, President Obama has been saying the U.S. must send humans to Mars. Permanently. There was the 2010 speech when he said, "By the mid-2030s, I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow. And I expect to be around to see it." There was that time in 2012 when he said the Curiosity rover was inspiring kids to tell "their moms and dads they want to be part of a Mars mission — maybe even the first person to walk on Mars." And there were those other times he told kids visiting the White House that they might go to Mars someday. SPACE Mars Or Bust: Putting Humans On The Red Planet And, of course, the 2015 State of the Union address when he called for the U.S. to push out into the solar system "not just to visit, but to stay." Today, the president said it again. "We have set a clear goal vital to the next chapter of America's story in space: sending humans to Mars by the 2030s and returning them safely to Earth, with the ultimate ambition to one day remain there for an extended time," the president wrote in an op-ed published by CNN. "Getting to Mars will require continued cooperation between government and private innovators, and we're already well on our way," he wrote. "Within the next two years, private companies will for the first time send astronauts to the International Space Station." The president continued: "The next step is to reach beyond the bounds of Earth's orbit. I'm excited to announce that we are working with our commercial partners to build new habitats that can sustain and transport astronauts on long-duration missions in deep space. These missions will teach us how humans can live far from Earth — something we'll need for the long journey to Mars." Several commercial spaceflight companies have also announced plans to aim for Mars in the coming decades. Last week, for example, Boeing's CEO announced, "I'm convinced the first person to step foot on Mars will arrive there riding a Boeing rocket." Blue Origin, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is testing rockets to bring humans into orbit "and beyond." And the defense and space contractor Orbital ATK is building and testing rocket boosters for a future human mission to Mars. A Dutch venture called Mars One hopes to colonize Mars by 2025, and has been taking applications from would-be travelers for years, although it acknowledges that it will rely on "major aerospace companies" for transportation. SCIENCE Are Humans Really Headed To Mars Anytime Soon? In September, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced a yet-to-be-built rocket system that he said would put people on Mars by 2025, and would eventually transport enough people to the red planet to start a permanent colony. Musk predicted any Mars mission would require "a huge public-private partnership." A 2014 report by the National Research Council found federal funding for human spaceflight programs has not been robust enough to achieve the president's goals for Mars. "Pronouncements by multiple presidents of bold new ventures by Americans to the Moon, to Mars, and to an asteroid in its native orbit, have not been matched by the same commitment that accompanied President Kennedy's now fabled 1961 speech," the report's overview reads. But Obama appears undeterred. "Someday I hope to hoist my own grandchildren onto my shoulders," the president writes. "We'll still look to the stars in wonder, as humans have since the beginning of time. But instead of eagerly awaiting the return of our intrepid explorers, we'll know that because of the choices we make now, they've gone to space not just to visit, but to stay — and in doing so, to make our lives better here on Earth." Later this week, Obama will host the White House Frontiers Conference in Pittsburgh, where the White House says the five "frontiers of innovation" up for discussion are personal, local, national, global and interplanetary.

  5. Microsoft insists that this problem only affected people in the Windows Insider Program, though it has not explained why others not in that program would have been impacted by the latest patch. A fix has been pushed out for the issues but the company has provided no details into what went wrong or what the patch fixes. The supposed link to a knowledge base (KB) article that’s supposed to describe the problem is actually dead as of this writing. Original story below: For well over a year, Microsoft has tried to position Windows 10 as a new type of operating system — one that’s continually updated without allowing for meaningful customer intervention, with security, driver, and software updates combined together by default and updated on Microsoft’s timeline. Pro customers can delay updates for a period of time, but non-enterprise users aren’t allowed to push them off indefinitely. The company has repeatedly promised that by giving up this control, its customers will receive more timely updates, features, and improvements. It’s the kind of promise that requires an ironclad commitment to shipping stable software — and Microsoft has been dropping the ball in myriad ways ever since Windows 10 launched. Last week’s update for Windows 10 Anniversary Edition (KB3194496) has trapped some users in an unending reboot loop. Microsoft has told ZDNet that it’s already in the process of fixing the problem and will release an updated script in the near future. The problem doesn’t affect all users, but issues like this often leave me wondering how machines trapped in an endless boot loop are supposed to get the fix in the first place. Presumably the company will release instructions on how to short-circuit the boot loop manually and apply the appropriate patch. Part of why this is making waves is because the problem was reported by early adopters before the patch ever went live to the larger community. Microsoft apparently either ignored that feedback or never read it in the first place. Prior to 2014, Windows releases were evaluated by an extensive programmatic testing team within Microsoft itself, but Satya Nadella gutted this division when he became CEO. In its place, Microsoft rolled out a system in which developers were expected to troubleshoot their own code, with remaining QA resources dedicated to real-world tests and troubleshooting. In theory, the above should’ve allowed Microsoft to roll updates more quickly and improve its software on a more rapid cadence. We have seen new Windows 10 features appear more rapidly than previous iterations of the operating system. Along with those benefits, however, has come a series of problems. For example, Windows 10 Anniversary Edition broke most webcams because it no longer supports compressed data streams, which the vast majority of webcams rely on in order to function. At least some Kindle devices crashed Windows 10 AU when plugged in, and Microsoft’s KB3176934 brokePowerShell. Last year, the company pushed an update that removed software from users’ systems after erroneously flagging it as incompatible with Windows 10. None of these issues are show-stoppers in and of themselves. There have always been Windows patches that caused problems on a small number of machines, and that’s inevitably going to happen when you have 400 million devices running any operating system given that Windows 10 can run on hardware that’s 10+ years old. But as John Dvorak points out on PCMag.com, this problem takes on an entirely different dimension given how Microsoft now forces people to take updates whether they like it or not. Youcan still prevent Windows 10 from updating, to be clear — the Windows Update service can be manually deactivated. But this is a brute-force solution to the problem that exposes users to significant security risks. One potential explanation for how these problems keep slipping through is that Microsoftdoesn’t recommend Windows Insiders test fast ring deployments on primary systems or mission-critical hardware. This means that a lot of testing gets done from within a virtual machine. VMs are great for testing a number of scenarios and applications, but they can’t completely replace dedicated testing on production-ready hardware. VMs aren’t the sort of thing people tend to use for Skype or other peripheral tests. Since Windows Insiders reported the latest problem before the patch went live, it suggests Microsoft needs to be paying more attention to the feedback it gets from beta testers, period. The company needs to lock down these issues before something truly catastrophic slips through the vetting process, or before the steady drip-drip-drip of flaws and failures builds up to the point that it threatens consumer perception of Windows as a stable operating system. And yes — before anyone says anything snarky in the comments, I’d argue Windows isgenerally perceived as a stable operating system now. In the late 1990s, it wasn’t uncommon for people to reboot once or more per day. I considered it an accomplishment if I could keep my own Windows 98 SE box online for a week without needing to reboot to fix an OS instance that had slowed to a crawl or otherwise become unusable. Today, PC uptime is routinely measured in months, provided you don’t need to reboot to apply an update (or provided the machine doesn’t reboot itself after an automatic update). Other staples of late-90s and early 2000s computer advice, like the need to periodically reinstall your operating system to keep the PC running at an acceptable speed, have similarly vanished. The way it stands now, Windows 10 risks shifting consumer perception in precisely the wrong direction. Ideally, Microsoft would decouple its security updates from its feature updates, keeping the former mandatory and letting the latter be optional. Failing that, the company needs to invest in solving these problems with a more robust QA strategy. Now read: Windows 10: The best hidden features, tips, and tricks

  11. Cape Town – Shortstraw on Tuesday retracted the artwork for their single T-Shirt after it came to their attention that it’s a copy of another artist’s work. The Johannesburg based band was notified late on Monday that the artwork they used for T-Shirt, the latest single from their Those Meddling Kids collection, was not done by the artist employed for the artwork, but a copy of an artwork by an artist called Adara Sánchez Anguiano. The band asked designer Dan Apter to create an artwork for their single and used it in good faith, with no idea that it is a copy of another artist’s work. The band immediately got in touch with Adara, and apologised for the use of the artwork without her permission. Shortstraw once again apologises to Adara, and is looking into solutions to get this situation resolved as soon as possible.

  13. Johannesburg - The sharp drop in the value of the rand minutes after news that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been served a formal summons by the Hawks has also had a dramatic influence on the JSE. Rand hedge shares rose sharply, with Richemont [JSE:CFR] on the forefront, but the Financial index in early trade was more than 2.7% down, with some banking shares sharply lower. The rand lost 2.93% within minutes after the news that Gordhan has been served a summons for fraud, related to the early retirement of Ivan Pillay, the former deputy commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (Sars). Pillay and former Sars commissioner Oupa Magashula were also served with summonses. The local unit, which stood at R13.77 to the dollar at the beginning of trade, dropped sharply to R14.29 when the news became known, changing hands at R14.24 in mid-morning trade. The All-share index at mid-morning was 0.62% higher at 51 997 points, while the Top 40 index traded 0.86% higher at 45 506 points. The indices overall were supported by the Industrial index - which includes most of the dual-listed rand hedge shares - which gained 1.05% by mid-morning. The Resources index was 2.66% higher and the Gold index lifted 2.34% despite a slightly stronger dollar, which pushed commodity prices down. Mining companies, which sell all of their output on the international markets in dollars, benefit directly from a weaker rand. Well-known commodity groups such as Anglo American [JSE:AGL], Glencore [JSE:GLN] and South32 [JSE:S32] all traded at 52-week highs. The Financial index was however 2.05% lower at that stage, amid investor concerns about the possible effect on banks' funding costs if the continued drama between the Hawks and Gordhan leads to a downgrade of South Africa’s foreign credit rating. The index earlier shed more than 2.5%. Standard Bank [JSE:SBK] and FirstRand [JSE:FSR] were among the busiest shares on the JSE; Standard Bank lost 4.41% to R138.85 and FirstRand traded 4.32% softer at R46.18. Barclays Africa [JSE:BGA] lost even more ground, shedding 4.68% to R147.75, while Nedbank [JSE:NED] was 3.62% lower at R218.91. The rand is also pressured somewhat by the stronger dollar, which extended overnight gains on growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this year. Traders have priced in a 70% chance that the Fed will hike at its December meeting, up from 66% early on Friday, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool. Richemont was the star performer among the rand hedges in the industrial sector. The share price, which before Tuesday’s trade was more than 20% lower for the year to date, at mid-morning was 5.43% higher at R90.55; however, in earlier trade it was more than 6% stronger at R92.00. In August the stock was at a 52-week low of R79.54. Naspers [JSE:NPN] was 1.02% up at R2 350.03 and British American Tobacco [JSE:BAT] gained 2.74% to R850.14. Steinhoff [JSE:SHF], which is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, traded 0.22% lower at R75.45, in line with the weaker German DAX index. Anglo American continued its strong run on Tuesday morning and gained 2.76% to another 52-week high of R182.38 after hitting a 52-week low of R53.30 in January. The share, which before Tuesday’s trade was 173.5% higher for the year to date, gained 14.7% over the past 30 days. Glencore [JSE:GLN] traded 2.68% higher on a 52-week high of R39.91, after gaining 16.3% over the previous 30 days and 94.8% for the year to date. South32, which in January was as low as R10.34, firmed more than 5% on Tuesday to a 52-week high of R27.08; this means the share price is now more than 120% higher for the year. Exxaro [JSE:EXX] gained 3.33% to a new high of R108.50 and is now almost 150% higher for the year to date, while Merafe [JSE:MRF] gained 2.61% to R1.18 - more than 76% higher than the 52-week low of only 49c at the end of last year. Sasol [JSE:SOL] continued its strong recovery of more than 6% over the past seven days and again traded above R300 on Tuesday, when it gained 3.50% to R414.01. The price of Brent crude, which has a direct influence on Sasol’s income from synthetic fuel, surged as much as 3% on Monday. The gains came after Russia said it was ready to join the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries in limiting crude output. and Algeria called for similar commitments from other non-OPEC producers. OPEC aims for agreements to cut about 700 000 barrels per day in its first reduction in eight years.

  14. The new Xperia X Performance so like an Xperia Z5 improved slightly in terms of design and features, we tend to think that Sony plans simply to bury its Xperia Z range for the benefit of its Xperia X. Before get into the thick of it, here are the characteristics of the two smartphones, face to face. Design and screen: A bit like different generations of iPhone or Samsung Galaxy (between S6 and S7), Sony retains between the Xperia Z5 and the same X Performance Full HD on a slab Triluminos IPS. However, the X Performance is a bit smaller, with its 5-inch screen against 5.2 inches, which automatically increases the resolution of some PPP. It should also be noted that unlike the Z, X series only offers 5-inch formats, welcome for small hands, but larger than the ZX Compact. Besides the issue of size, the main difference that opposes the Xperia X Performance in Xperia Z5 is its design. It obviously keeps very sober style unique to the brand, with a flat back and round wafers on which we find as a fingerprint sensor as volume control buttons and camera shutter button, but exchange material. To better fit the times, Sony has abandoned the glass Z5, whose frosted effect has also been praised for the brushed metal. This preserves a unibody design. Damage, however, that the X-performance, more compact than his colleague (144.8 x 71.1 x 7.62 mm against 146 x 72 x 7.3 mm) is slightly thicker, and especially heavier than 10 grams. Conclusion: A little better or equivalent to the Xperia Z5 on most points, the Xperia X Performance clearly taking over from its predecessor more than is complete. Nevertheless, it still ignores its launch price, which is reasonable hope. Because by its release in May 2016, the Zperia Z5, which is already around 500 euros, will have time to see its price drop, which may decrease even the interest of invest in an X Performance.
