The Tevinter Empire was ruled by ambitious and powerful wizards who practiced a kind of forbidden sorcery known as " blood magic " and its practitioners were therefore blood mages . One day , a group of blood mages did a spell in order to travel and go to the home of The Maker , known as " the Chapel " (very important religious organization ) and The Golden City . Achieved their purpose, but when they stepped on the golden floor of the lodging of the Maker , the lust of blood mages they made the place known as "The Veil " (the world of dreams and spirits ) be corrupted , and soil and gilded halls of the mansion of the Maker became dark and thereafter the place as the Black Citadel is met . Wizards of blood causing all that were expelled and returned immediately to Thedas , but returned when they were no longer human , but something far worse : the first darkspawn.
