[Mobile Games] Google Ends Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Hiring Goals

Google is the latest US tech firm to roll back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. 

According to an internal memo obtained by The Wall Street Journal, Google has told employees that it would no longer set targets to recruit more people from historically underrepresented groups. That's a departure from Google’s previous commitment; in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, CEO Sundar Pichai told employees that Google would “improve leadership representation of underrepresented groups by 30% by 2025.”

As the WSJ notes, signs of a move away were first observed in Google’s annual report released Wednesday. The company omitted a line from previous reports (2021-24) that said it was “committed to making diversity, equity, and inclusion part of everything we do and to growing a workforce that is representative of the users we serve.” 

Despite the shift, Google will continue to open and expand offices with diverse workforces, the memo adds. However, it will no longer pursue “aspirational goals” for hiring. Additionally, as a federal contractor, Google is re-evaluating changes to its other DEI programs “to comply with recent court decisions and US Executive Orders,” Fiona Cicconi, the company’s head of HR, said in the memo.
