Gilas Pilipinas Women are set to begin their campaign in the 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup on July 13 in Shenzhen, China. The team is grouped in Pool B alongside strong contenders Australia, Japan, and Lebanon. Their opening game will be against world No. 2 Australia, followed by another tough matchup against world No. 9 Japan. These two opening matches present a major challenge for the Philippines, as they face two of the top-ranked teams in women’s basketball.

Their third and final game in the group stage will be against Lebanon on July 16. This match is critical for Gilas Pilipinas as it presents their best chance to secure a win and avoid relegation to Division B. Lebanon, ranked 54th in the world, is a more evenly matched opponent compared to the towering task of facing Australia and Japan. A win in this match could help the Philippines maintain their spot in Division A and potentially advance to the next stage.

The tournament holds more than just regional pride for Gilas. A strong performance could earn them a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournaments, with only the top six teams advancing. To achieve this, the team must deliver competitive performances even against elite opponents. Success in this tournament could mark a significant step forward for Philippine women’s basketball on the international stage.

Despite the absence of key veterans like Afril Bernardino and Janine Pontejos due to military commitments, the team remains competitive with experienced players like Jack Animam and Vanessa de Jesus leading the way. Young talents such as Ella Fajardo are also expected to make a significant impact. With a combination of seasoned leadership and youthful energy, Gilas Pilipinas Women aim to prove themselves in one of the toughest competitions in Asia.
