The Champions League 2024/2025 preliminary round, which is being played under a new format for the first time, came to an end on Wednesday with Matchday 8.

This first stage, which was based on a league phase – that is, accumulating points in the table after eight rounds played – leaves eight teams directly qualified for the round of 16 and 16 more clubs that qualify for the knockout playoffs.
Remember: in the new Champions League format, once the eight rounds of the initial league phase are played, the eight teams with the most points qualify directly for the round of 16 of the tournament. The next 16 clubs in the standings – from position 9 to 24 – go on to a special knockout playoff phase, which is nothing more than a two-legged sudden death to get one of the eight remaining tickets to the round of 16.

The draw for the next matches will be made on Friday 31 January at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The draw for the last 16 will take place on 21 February.
