Earlier, Punjab government requested interior ministry to shut down social media apps from Muharram 6 to 11 to prevent the spread of hate speech and misinformation. The decision was made due to reports of external forces spreading hate content. Home Department emphasized that shutting down the internet caused public inconvenience while social media apps continued to disseminate hate material. No access to Facebook in Pakistan amid Muharram 10 processions. The telecom regulator, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), issued no statement on the issue, while cellular mobile operators (CMOs) also claimed they had not received any complaints. There were reports that users were unable to upload media files while connected to mobile data, but voice messages and video files could be sent and viewed through Wi-Fi connections.
