Noticias ALEJANDRO Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 The findings were located in the municipalities of Calakmul and Escárcega, in Campeche, on the coast towards the Gulf of Mexico, Yucatán Peninsula. According to the INAH, of the total number of burials, a dozen were detected within cists (a structure of four lateral slabs and a fifth that acts as a roof). Led by specialists from that institution, the prospecting work was carried out “between October 2022 and February 2023.” This process made it possible to carry out excavations in the area and locate already registered archaeological monuments. These burials were discovered “in different shapes and positions.” In some cases they were accompanied by offerings. The discovery of one that contained a ceramic bowl was exceptional, which has generated discussion about its funerary nature. In addition, four burials were located “within the remains of a house,” and ceramic remains were found “next to the bones.” “Another significant discovery was a burial in the center of a plaza,” which in the researchers' opinion would indicate “the importance of the individual in relation to the monument.” Meanwhile, the INAH group of anthropologists expressed their certainty that, despite the fact that “many bones were in poor condition, they hope to obtain valuable information about the diet and origin of these ancient Mayan po[CENSORED]tions.” They will do this through “scientific analysis” tools. Among other data, the discovery aims to better understand “the settlement pattern and adaptation of the ancient Mayan po[CENSORED]tions to their environment in the south of Campeche, in an area characterized by water scarcity and the location in the upper part of the hills.” ”.
