Noticias ALEJANDRO Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 Large European meat and dairy industries have managed to "markedly weaken" several key European Union (EU) climate policies in recent years, and even three of them appear to have stalled completely. It is the main conclusion of a study carried out by the British think tank InfluenceMap on the impact of this business lobby on EU climate legislation between 2020 and 2023. The investigation reveals the promotional tactics used by the European meat and dairy industry to paralyze EU policies aimed at tackling greenhouse gas emissions from livestock and the transition to sustainable diets. The report indicates that the ten largest meat and dairy companies, together with the five largest business associations, have participated in intense efforts that have significantly affected climate policies promoted by the EU. Specifically, according to this work, the result of this pressure has been the "significant weakening" of two policies: the "emblematic" 'From farm to fork' strategy, which seeks to ensure that food systems are fair, healthy and respectful of the environment, and the review of the Industrial Emissions Directive, which regulates polluting emissions from European agricultural operations, including methane.
