[Animales] Coypu in Girona and Chinese carp in Vallès: citizen science revolutionizes the detection of invasive species

Recommended Posts

Detecting the appearance of an invasive species is not always easy. In most cases, these exotic species enter foreign territory almost accidentally, they spread stealthily and are often only detected when they have already become a true pest. The scientific community has been trying to redouble its efforts for years to detect early the emergence of exotic animals and plants with invasive potential in Spain, but it is not always possible to deploy thousands of experts on the ground to monitor the state of the ecosystems in real time. An alternative that is emerging with increasing force, and that promises to revolutionize the study of invasive species, is citizen science. The initiatives that bring together the eyes of millions of people and the knowledge of experts are gaining more and more strength in Spain and, little by little, they are achieving unsuspected discoveries.
