Spanish Language Day is celebrated every April 23, which the United Nations (UN) dedicates to raising awareness about the history, culture and use of this language. The celebration was established in tribute to the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra, who died that day in 1616.

Hence it is stated that Spanish is the most widespread Romance language globally. It is officially used in countries on all continents. Even in Antarctica, officially neutral territory, there are scientific stations po[CENSORED]ted by Spanish speakers.

The Spanish language, also called Castilian, is the second most widespread on the planet, with more than 460,000,000 native speakers, only surpassed by Chinese; and it is the fourth language with the most total speakers, behind Chinese, English and Hindi.

Specialists agree that Spanish has more than 100,000 words, with estimates varying from 195,000 to 300,000, depending on the consideration made of the meanings, Americanisms and other variations established in the different regions and countries where it is spoken.

However, other words have emerged and have been recognized by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) after numerous updates to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE), as a sign that the language is constantly updating itself.
