As the world bid farewell to 2023 and welcomed 2024, Indian sportspersons ushered into the new year with fresh aspirations to excel across the globe. Like elsewhere, 2024 for Indian sportspersons is a dream year with the Paris Olympics on the horizon. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, despite having a challenging 2023 with unexpected injuries and a performance slump, welcomed the new challenge and said she remains resolute for her ultimate Everest-like challenge. “Paris 2024 looms as my ultimate challenge. It’s akin to climbing Mt. Everest but with the added intensity of conquering it in winter,” PV Sindhu said while quoting American writer Mark Twain’s famous quote: ‘Focus more on your desire than on your doubt and the dream will take care of itself.’ “In the golden era of women’s badminton, pursuing a third Olympic medal is my ultimate challenge—truthfully, my greatest one yet. I am as focused as ever; rest assured, the fire burns brighter and hotter than ever!” Sindhu added. PV Sindhu, a former world champion, has been struggling with injuries since winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Though Sindhu regained form in the second half of 2023, a knee injury at the French Open in October marred her progress. Two-time world champion and Commonwealth Games gold Nikhat Zareen missed out on a gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. However, she secured an Olympic quota for India with a bronze medal at the same competition.

India’s first individual Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra took the moment to remember the birthday of Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, the father of c modern Olympic Games, who was born on January 1, 1863, in Paris.
