FNX Magokiler Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 One of the main conclusions that were drawn preliminarily about the plebiscite is that the response prepared by the Republican Party and Chile Vamos failed to convince the vast majority of citizens and now they are paying the cost of having failed in a second attempt for a new Constitution. However, with them, for the “For”, there were also Democrats and Yellows who, with the idea of fighting for a political center, were electorally defeated and – it is commented in Parliament – they were closer to the right than to the center , and with an uncertain future. Both Democrats and Yellows were part of the pact in Congress – baptized Agreement for Chile – that enabled the new constituent process after the Constitutional Convention proposal was rejected, but they were not part of the electoral race for the Council that would draft the text. That left them out of writing anything, but it did not prevent them from rowing in the direction of “In favor” like the Republican Party and Chile Vamos. Now that the option they supported was defeated, they have the complex task of locating themselves in the center for an electorate that links them to the right and facing the municipal elections of 2024. After the triumph of the “Against” option, Senator Ximena Rincón avoided acknowledging defeat, as did the other parties that opted for that option. Rincón said, after learning the results of the plebiscite, that “the great center of the country was not represented in this constitutional debate and did not feel represented by the parties,” and he did not refer to any political cost that would generate losses, on the contrary. He maintained that “the extremes have clearly lost, there is no refoundation of Chile as some wanted.” The responsibility for the second constitutional failure and the political costs to pay have generated problems among the opposition parties, however, the general secretary of Democrats, Matías Walker, affirms that his community is “calm with their decision.” The senator explains that they were aware that “‘In favor’ was an uphill option, but we wanted to be consistent, because we signed the Agreement with Chile and the bases were respected.” Walker believes that this was a second opportunity to “approve a Constitution with a democratic origin,” but he also thinks that “it is true that the Republican advisors, in particular, made many mistakes in the first stage of the process.” Now, he also maintains that “the left made a mistake of not having taken advantage of the opportunity to make observations on the text, to have improved it.” In Congress, representatives of the political center see Democrats and Yellows complicated with the results. They affirm that Democratic deputies preferred that the party provide freedom of action and not appear too playful with the “For” option. https://www.elmostrador.cl/noticias/pais/2023/12/30/democratas-y-amarillos-mordiendo-el-polvo/
