[Auto] Autocosmos Awards 2024: the BMW M2 is the Sports Car of the Year

The Autocosmos 2024 Awards come to an end after 40 days of voting by our readers and the general public, in which around 40 thousand valid votes were counted, and the winner in the Sports Car of the Year category is the BMW M2.

In a vote with fairly even results, the compact coupe released in the middle of this year triumphed with 19% of the votes, beating 13 other competitors, all models put on sale in Chile between January 1 and December 15 of 2023.

Behind the model manufactured in Mexico were two thoroughbreds of sportiness: the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, with 16% of the votes validly cast, and the Ferrari 812 Competizione, with 15%.

Some considerations to keep in mind:

The survey was supported by SurveyMonkey, so that there was always the certainty that Autocosmos could not mani[CENSORED]te the results.
You were allowed to vote as many times as you wanted, but the system automatically blocked bot campaigns (bags of votes emanating from the same IP without a confirmation email).
The survey was available for voting from Friday, November 10 to Wednesday, December 20.

 

A total of 38,578 validly cast votes were recorded.
The winner

After so much electromobility, BMW returns to its essence with the M2. Due to its compact size, its agility and its high power, it is the favorite format of many. It is worth saying that this M2 was born as a successor to the exquisite 1M Coupé, built on the basis of the first Series 1 coupe, before it was renamed Series 2. And although the 135i and M235i/M240i of the past are spectacular models, the M2 is simply another thing.

Let's note that the design returns to a normal-sized kidney grille and adds a striking sports kit that makes it look very aggressive. The most relevant thing is that BMW decided to put a larger engine here, so it had to enlarge some parts of the car, starting with the tracks, which are 4 cm larger than those of a 2 Series. And that allows not only to place oversized wheels of 19" and 20", but also the inline six of the M3 and M4.

This powerful three-liter block and two single-inlet turbos reaches 460 HP and 550 Nm of torque between 2,650 and 5,870 rpm. It is managed by an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with Drivelogic program, which directs its power to the rear axle, with an active M differential that can divert up to 100% of the torque to a single wheel. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h.

In addition, it has Adaptive M suspension, M Compound brakes with two-level adjustable brake booster, driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+), two M buttons for direct access to personalized settings and the M Mode button with three global modes that alter the handling and information screens, called Road, Sport and Race.

Inside, the M2 sports the new Curved Display panel, M multifunction seats with electric adjustment, M leather steering wheel, carbon fiber accents and an extensive package of driving assistance.
