“We hope that the President takes this project into consideration and gives it urgency, because, for every day that passes, there are five people who take their lives in Chile,” warned the parliamentarian (IND, pro PPD).

Representative Camila Musante, author of the “Stay Law” project, comments on the details of this initiative that aims to enable a work permit for a period of 14 days for workers who assist people at risk of suicide.

“This is a project that has been proposed to save lives. It is an effective measure, not only necessary, to generate a care policy that allows workers to reconcile their work life with family space. In addition to that, it is an initiative that is effective in reducing the suicide rate,” she points out.

Chile is the sixth country with the highest suicide rate in Latin America, according to WHO data, to which is added the explosive increase in self-consumption of antidepressants. Indicators that the parliamentarian observes with concern.

“It is high risk and self-medication is becoming more common among young people, which is why it is important that the family network can be present. (…) We have received truly shocking stories, cases of mothers who have had to abandon their sources of employment because they have a teenager at risk of suicide,” she indicates.

Along these lines, Musante adds that this project “is framed within the mental health policy, but it also reinforces the rights of workers, because what it does is modify the article where work permits are found within the Labor Code. ”.

Regarding the progress of its processing, the representative points out that “it was supported transversally, it was voted on in general in the Labor Commission and it was approved unanimously. Unfortunately, since there is no urgency, it has been left behind.” Therefore, she reiterates her call to President Gabriel Boric to take the project into consideration and give it legislative urgency.
