[Politics] Macaya criticizes the Government's pension formula: “It does not speak to what Chileans think”

Evidence that an intense debate is coming in Congress, the senator and president of the UDI, Javier Macaya, referred to the Government's new formula to reactivate the discussion on the pension reform.

Until now, the right has remained firm against the Executive's initiative. They are not willing to allocate additional contribution points to social security, emphasizing that everything should go to individual accounts.

Yesterday, the Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, Jeannette Jara (PC), confirmed that La Moneda will submit its expected indications to the pension reform project this week—whose parliamentary discussion was paralyzed pending the end of the constituent process—and announced that These include a new distribution formula of 6% additional contribution.

Minister Jara explained that:

1% would go to strengthening the formal employment of women through daycare and modifying life expectancies
2% for individual savings
And 3% for social security, which would allow all contributors to increase one UF (36 thousand pesos) for each year they contribute.
Although the proposal announced by Minister Jara was applauded by the ruling party, according to Senator Macaya, "there is no agreement today in Congress to give a point, even one point upwards, for solidarity."

In conversation with Radio Pauta, the union helmsman assured that the solidarity proposed by the Government.

"Does not speak with what Chileans think and does not speak with the technical evidence of what works in the world."

What the UDI does agree on is analyzing how, with the votes that are probably already in Congress today, advance the two-point increase in the individual contribution. Also, to see how the universal nursery is financed.

Macaya even asked to delay the discussion on solidarity in pensions. “Let's leave it perhaps for the next Government, for the next Parliament, because we already have a political system that is as it is,” he said.

“We will campaign for 2026, telling Chileans that we will not allow the fruit of their work to be stolen,” stated the leader of the Independent Democratic Union, whose presidential letter is the mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei.

But, despite the rejection of solidarity in pensions, the president of the UDI said that the Government is making a wrong reading of the December 17 plebiscite and ruled out that his party's position is against the agreements.

It is worth mentioning that, after the triumph of the Against over the For in the constitutional referendum on Sunday, President Gabriel Boric called for working together to, once the constituent process is closed at least for this presidential term, address the emergencies of the country: education, health, security, housing and pensions.

Agreement, Macaya pointed out, “is a word that the Government has mani[CENSORED]ted a lot and in the end it ends up speaking to its own tribe as if they had a monopoly on agreements.”
