[Politics] Youth and plebiscite: rejection of everything that has to do with the political class

2,602,948 young people between 20 and 29 years old are eligible to vote today, according to Servel data. Added to them are about 760 thousand who are between 18 and 20 years old (INE projection according to the 2017 Census), of which about 250 thousand are 18 years old and voting for the first time.

This is a generation strongly marked by the social outbreak and the pandemic: they are those who spent two years with online classes, which made their socialization, mental health and conversation about citizen issues difficult. They are much more demobilized than their predecessors and less interested in politics.

A year ago, it was expected that this segment would concentrate the pro-Approve climate, mainly because many of the issues promoted were of interest to them, but more than half of the young people opted for Rejection.

“Political science says that when uncertainty is great, people put ideals as a second level of priority in order to ensure a little stability. The effervescence of the outbreak, which was very youthful, began to calm down and an important part of the young people who previously wanted drastic changes, last year had already changed their minds and found that to maintain stability it was better to go more gradually," explains Nicolle. Etchegaray, executive coordinator of the Ciclos UDP survey.

For this reason, today practically none of our interviewees dare to make predictions. There isn't much data about it either.

The 10th National Youth Survey (2022) of the National Youth Institute (INJUV), says that more than 70% are not interested in politics. Despite this, “it is the highest interest recorded in the last 10 years, with 28.9%,” the conclusions point out. Even so, 80.5% consider that voting is a factor of change in society, 63.8% talk about politics with other people and 54.1% would participate if it were a social cause.

The UDP-Feedback survey (November 2023) asked a series of questions associated with the constitutional process. 33% indicated that they would vote in favor in the December 17 plebiscite, while 53% stated that they would vote “against.” When looking at the profile of those who lean toward the “against” option, they tend to be mainly women, young (18 to 39 years old), center-left or left, and live in the Metropolitan Region.

When cross-referencing the group of young people with the total survey in general, we see that those of younger age are particularly concerned about the rise in the cost of living due to inflation. But they are satisfied with the way democracy works and consider this system preferable to another form of government.
