Juan Dionisio Opazo Vera, a former conscript, was finally arrested early this Thursday by a team from the Carabineros OS9, after being a fugitive from justice since June of last year. Opazo, convicted for his role as the perpetrator in the 38 homicides of Paine peasants that occurred between September and October 1973, now faces admission to the Colina I Penitentiary Compliance Center by an order issued by Minister Marianela Cifuentes, of the Court of St. Michael's Appeals.

The minister on an extraordinary visit for cases of human rights violations ordered the immediate admission of Opazo, who must serve a 10-year prison sentence for these crimes against humanity.

Opazo's arrest represents significant progress in Paine's case, according to lawyer Nelson Caucoto, plaintiff in this case, who highlighted the work of the police forces and expressed his hope that other convicted and fugitive former agents will also be captured.

“It is wonderful news that we receive from Minister Marianela Cifuentes in the Paine case because the fact that she has apprehended one of the escapees means that the police are fulfilling their task, so we hope that they will also be able to find the whereabouts.” of the other former agents who were convicted and who are still fugitives,” said the lawyer.

 

 

Opazo Vera was part of the list of 14 former agents of the dictatorship convicted of crimes against humanity who were fugitives from justice. Along with the ex-conscript, Manfredo Enrique Jurgensen Caesar (doctor, CNI) has already been captured, sentenced as co-author of the qualified homicide of Federico Álvarez Santibáñez and who died last June after his capture; Olegario Enrique González Moreno (Army, DINA), convicted as co-author of 9 qualified kidnappings (forced disappearances); and Héctor Fernando Osses Yáñez (Carabineros officer, retired military union leader), convicted as the perpetrator in at least six cases of murders in the San Gregorio 9 neighborhood.
