Chilean politics has been securitized in recent weeks, as a consequence of a series of very violent criminal events, including several kidnappings in different parts of the country, homicides, the grenade attack on a police station and the discovery of human remains on a beach in the Coquimbo Region, among other events, all of which led the opposition to begin a frontal attack against the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá.

Given this, the debate has also occurred in terms of whether there is an objective increase in crimes – which all authorities deny with different emphasis – or if it is just a problem of perception, fueled by social networks, the press and politicians of right, but today also left. In fact, the latest National Urban Survey on Citizen Security (ENUSC) confirms that Chile reached its highest rates in terms of the perception of insecurity in a decade: 90.6%

However, beyond perceptions, the most comprehensive figures in this regard are those managed by the Public Ministry, which began to act throughout the country in 2005 – since it is worth remembering that, starting in 2001, it was gradually implemented. , in different regions). As it only began its operations in the middle of that year in the Metropolitan Region, its first complete statistics of annual case income at the country level dates back to 2006. These are completely public reports, which anyone can consult from the web, at this address .

In 2006, this institution – which centralizes practically all complaints for acts that constitute crimes in the country (except those committed in some aspects of the military sphere) – registered 944,547 cases entered into the system.

The following year, income (that is, complaints, which may be for one or more crimes) grew significantly, reaching 1,078,307. Then, there was a new important jump, since income was 1,219,797 in 2008 and from that moment on they continued to grow, but in 2012, there was a decrease compared to the previous year: 1,323,645 income vs. 1,378,873. In 2013 they fell again, this time to 1,301,138.

In 2014 the income was 1,348,985 and from then until 2017 (year that closed with 1,323,324 crimes) there were slight decreases, the figures stabilizing at orders slightly higher than 1 million 300 thousand.

However, in 2018 there was an increase compared to this (1,379,642) and in 2019 Chile for the first time exceeded one and a half million criminal records, 1,508,350, to be more exact.

The following year, with the pandemic, the figure fell, but did not return to the levels prior to 2018, as there was a total of 1,430,960 admissions, which fell sharply in 2021 (1,289,255), but recovered in 2022. when there were 1,425,712 causes.

Between January and September of this year, the Public Ministry records a total of 1,146,572 cases entered into its system. If that is projected mechanically, the total for 2023 should, again, be equal to or greater than one and a half million in income.
