At the end of September, Seal Rescue Ireland (SRI), a charity that rescues, rehabilitates and releases seals in need from across the Irish coast, received a call from a citizen concerned about the health of a baby seal that was found alone on the shore of Ennereilly Beach after Storm Agnes hit.

The team arrived at the rescue site and remained attentive to the condition of the seal, as they first needed to confirm that the animal was an orphan so as not to interrupt its natural life cycle. The team patiently waited for some sign from the mammal's biological mother, but after a while without having any positive indicators, the SRI acted and made the decision to take her in.

The seal had a swollen eye and was extremely weak at the time of its admission to SRI. The seal had been separated from its mother during the storm and the traumatic experience weakened it. According to the shelter, baby seals are not ready. to swim because their lanugo is heavy and at that age they have not yet developed the muscles to swim long distances.

Looking for a name for N-048

On the social network Instagram, the shelter shared photographs of the seal, which for practical purposes was named “N-048”, in its welcome post it reads: “Meet ‘N-048′. This lovely little girl was found after Storm Agnes and she is one of the many pups who need help after the difficult conditions of the storm. She was estimated to be only a week old and weighed 17.2 kilograms.”

The SRI reported that it would start a raffle to give a donor the opportunity to name the young mammal and that to participate you would only need to buy a ticket for five euros.

After a period without updates on the little seal, on November 15 the shelter posted a post reporting that N-048 had been named Caragh and that she was available for adoption. The SRI explained that the seal is named after the lake of the same name in the Reeks District region of County Kerry.

The organization concluded the post by stating: “The lake, like our seal, is definitely something to be worshiped and protected.”

The work of Ireland's only seal rescue center

According to the SRI website, the organization is the only seal rescue center in the Republic of Ireland, they respond to reports throughout the country and their main objective is to rehabilitate the pups so that they “return to full health and They can return to nature.”

The organization works around the clock to rescue, rehabilitate and release native seals found sick, injured or orphaned along the entire length of the Irish coast and constantly strive to promote ocean conservation and sustainability through education. , community participation and different research programs, all with the aim of protecting the maritime environment and all the life contained within it.
