WASHINGTON — The administration of President Joe Biden expects the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela to take steps to achieve the release of Americans “improperly” detained in that country as soon as the next few weeks, as part of an agreement that produced relief to the energy sanctions imposed by Washington, the US assistant secretary for hemispheric affairs, Brian Nichols, told Voice of America. Nichols said the US takes the terms of the deal “seriously” and expects Caracas to “comply” before the end of November. ”I have hopes that these steps will be achieved and also the release of the American citizens improperly detained in Venezuela," Nichols replied when asked about Washington's confidence in the word of the Maduro government. The US has authorized in a “limited” way the oil and gas operations and those of the aeronautical consortium of Venezuela, waiting in exchange for the authorization of the opposition presidential candidate María Corina Machado and the releases of Venezuelan and American detainees. To date, only five of the more than 200 Venezuelans detained for political reasons have been released. The deadline granted by the White House will expire on November 30 and failure to comply would lead to the end of sanctions relief, according to the State Department. The chief negotiator of the Maduro government, Jorge Rodríguez, has said that Washington's expectations are “false” and rejected the “pressures”, but sources in the Biden administration assure that, behind the scenes, his counterpart is aware of what was agreed. The US approaches with Maduro's socialist government have been criticized by Republican lawmakers who classify the actions as ”appeasing". https://www.vozdeamerica.com/a/eeuu-espera-pronta-liberacion-de-estadounidenses-detenidos-en-venezuela/7359659.html
