[Politics] Former Councilor Becker (RN) assures that the proposal for a new Constitution is “a center-right text”

Germán Becker, member of the Constitutional Council and member of Renovación Nacional (RN), shared his impressions about the proposal for a new Constitution approved by the Republican Party and Chile Vamos and which will be submitted to a plebiscite on December 17.

In a new chapter of Al Pan Pan with Mirna Schindler, Becker expressed his opinion on the resulting text, describing it as “center-right, more balanced than we originally thought.” The now former councilor highlighted the participation of the Republican Party, mentioning that despite the numerous amendments presented by said party, many of them were reduced, and some achieved consensus.

“They lowered several of their amendments and we managed to reach consensus on others,” he declared about the group founded by José Antonio Kast and which had the majority in the drafting body.

However, Becker lamented what he considered was a complete absence of center-left representation in the process. He stated that the Socialist Party and Democratic Socialism were allied from the beginning with the most radical left, although he expected a more autonomous attitude from these parties.

 

 

Becker suggested that the socialists became “trapped” by the harder left, and Democratic Socialism integrated with the Broad Front and the Communist Party, which, he said, finally “set the music.”

Asked if the Republican Party also “put the music” to Chile Vamos, Becker clarified that it is not as forceful as one might think. He highlighted that numerous changes were made during the process, mentioning the reduction of the rodeo issue and the inclusion of proposals from the Chile Vamos sector, such as the universal health plan and advocacy for victims.

“I think we made quite a few changes and we helped make the text more center-based and not as right-wing as it could have been if Chile Vamos had not been there,” he said.

It is worth mentioning that the first vote in the plenary session of the Constitutional Council left a break between the Republican Party and Chile Vamos, after some members of the latter bloc decided to abstain on some regulations. This was demonstrated since the revision of article 1, when the provision that indicated that “every human being is a person” was rejected.
