  • Other Information: John Winston Ono Lennon MBE (Liverpool, 9 October 1940 – New York, 8 December 1980) was a British singer, songwriter and peace activist who founded the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of po[CENSORED]r music. His songwriting partnership with bandmate Paul McCartney was one of the most celebrated in music history. Along with George Harrison and Ringo Starr, the group achieved worldwide fame during the 1960s. In 1969, Lennon started the Plastic Ono Band with his second wife, Yoko Ono, and continued to pursue a solo career after the Beatles split in April 1970.
  • Born in Liverpool, Lennon became interested in the skiffle genre as a teenager. In 1956, he formed his first band, The Quarrymen, which culminated in the creation of the Beatles in 1960. Initially he was the de facto leader of the group, but he gradually lost this position to McCartney. Lennon was characterized by his rebellious and sagacious nature in his music, writing, drawing, films and interviews. At the height of his fame in the 1960s, he published two books: In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, both collections of nonsense writing and scribble drawings. Beginning in 1967 with "All You Need Is Love", his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and counterculture of the time.
  • Between 1968 and 1972, Lennon produced more than a dozen recordings with Ono, including a trilogy of avant-garde albums, his first solo album – John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band – and the international hits "Give Peace a Chance", "Instant Karma !", "Imagine" and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". In 1969, he led a series of peace protests known as Bed-Ins for Peace. After moving to New York in 1971, his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a long attempt by the Richard Nixon administration to deport him. In 1975, Lennon retired from the music industry to care for his second son, Sean, and in 1980 he returned with another collaboration with Ono, the album Double Fantasy. He was murdered in front of his Manhattan home by Mark Chapman, a Beatles fan, three weeks after the release of his latest album.
  • As a performer, songwriter or collaborator, Lennon had 25 number one songs on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. Double Fantasy, his best-selling solo album, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year shortly after his death. In 1982, the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music was given to him posthumously. In 2002, Lennon was named the eighth greatest Briton of all time by the BBC. Rolling Stone magazine named him the fifth best singer in history and included him in the list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. In 1987, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Lennon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1994.
