This Monday the 18th and Tuesday the 19th, the heads of state will meet at the UN headquarters in New York, at the SDG Summit. Chile, like the other member countries of the United Nations, committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include the end of poverty, reduction of inequalities, responsible production and consumption, climate action, gender equality , decent work and economic growth, among other points. The Cepei organization, based in Bogotá, produced a report analyzing Chile's SDGs, focusing on the Voluntary National Reporting Quality Index and the National Governance Quality Index for Implementation. Cepei Research Director, Javier Surasky, said that “we should expect countries to reaffirm their commitment to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda, and to assume that it is time to move quickly and decisively from debates to actions.”

Countries are halfway to meeting the goals of the 2030 Agenda. In 2015, Chile and the Member States of the United Nations established Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to combat the climate crisis, move towards gender equality and build peaceful, just and inclusive societies.

While the National Holidays are celebrated in our country, this Monday the 18th and Tuesday the 19th the heads of state will meet at the UN headquarters in New York, within the framework of the SDG Summit. Chile, like other countries, committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 goals, which include the end of poverty, reduction of inequalities, responsible production and consumption, climate action, gender equality, decent work and economic growth. , among other points.

The objectives seek to achieve three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental spheres. Although the SDGs are clear, the reality is that achieving them is difficult: the climate crisis is deepening, experts have warned that the Covid-19 pandemic has deepened inequalities in the world, gender equality is far from being eradicated and distrust in political agents decreases.

The Bogotá-based organization, Cepei, produced a report analyzing Chile's SDGs, focusing on two tools: the Voluntary National Reporting Quality Index and the National Governance Quality Index for Implementation.

In relation to the Governance Quality Index for the implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda, the report concludes that “at the national level of Chile it was 52.92 in 2023 and is located in the medium-high quality group among the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The main challenge that affects quality is the limited openness to multiple actors.”

The Director of Research at Cepei, Javier Surasky, states that “in the case of Chile, leadership stands out, that is, the ability to request information from State institutions, preparation of implementation plans or strategies, responsibility in the preparation of national progress reports, among other powers.”

In order to implement the 2030 Agenda at the local level, the National Council was formed, an organization chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and composed of the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Social Development, which acts as secretariat. technique.

However, Surasky maintains that Chile “could improve in the area of communication and awareness, since several of these institutions do not have specific responsibilities assigned to the issue. The ability to convene multiple actors is the one that varies the most from country to country, reaching on average a rating that is between the other two.”
