  • Other Information: Aretha Louise Franklin (March 25, 1942 - August 16, 2018) was an American singer-songwriter of gospel, R&B and soul who became an icon of black music. She was considered the "greatest singer of all time" by Rolling Stone magazine. and, by the same magazine, the ninth greatest music artist of all time. Her voice was officially declared “a natural resource” by the state of Michigan.
  • Born in Memphis, raised in Detroit, Michigan, the singer received the nicknames "Queen of Soul" or "Lady of Soul". Renowned for her skills in soul and R&B music, she is also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop and even opera. During the late 60's and 70's, for Atlantic Records, he recorded albums that entered the history of world music, such as I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Lady Soul, Young, Gifted and Black, Sparkle and the Amazing Grace gospel album. In the 80's, after a low period in her career, she participated in the film The Blues Brothers (1980), and recorded classics like "Jump to It" and "Who's Zoomin' Who?".
  • In later years, he received great media and international acclaim when performing performances such as the aria "Nessun Dorma" at the Grammy Awards ceremony, where he replaced tenor Luciano Pavarotti who, for health reasons, canceled his number minutes before the presentation, and also for the tribute to singer-songwriter Carole King at the Kennedy Center Honors, where she received a standing ovation from those in attendance for her redemption of "(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman". She is generally recognized as one of the best vocalists in music history by major publications such as Rolling Stone magazine and the television channel VH1. She is also one of the most Grammy-winning singers in the history of the industry, having received twenty-one awards, eighteen competitive and three honorary.
  • Despite all the success, Franklin had only two singles that went to number one on the Hot 100, according to Billboard magazine: “Respect”, in the 1960s – his most highly regarded song – and “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) )", a duet with George Michael. However, several of her singles have already appeared in the top twenty on the same music chart; examples include "Think", "I Say a Little Prayer", "(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman", "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)", "Chain of Fools", "(Sweet, Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone", "Call Me", "Ain't No Way", "Don't Play That Song", "Freeway of Love", among others.
  • Franklin was also bestowed with numerous honors throughout her career. She is the holder of the National Medal of Arts as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor for an American civilian. In 1987, she became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2019, posthumously, she was the first woman to individually receive the Pulitzer Prize in the Special Citation category, "for her contribution to music and American culture for more than five decades". She is also one of the best-selling artists, reaching the mark of 75 million albums sold worldwide.
