[Animals] Two accused of clandestine slaughterhouse and receipt of a stolen car in Cartagena go to jail

The San Antonio Guarantee Court decreed this Wednesday the precautionary measure of preventive detention for Abraham Enrique Rojas Basualto and Enrique Alberto Cubillos Varas, accused as perpetrators of the consummated crimes of animal abuse, clandestine slaughterhouses and receipt of motorized vehicles.

These crimes were exposed on Tuesday in the Cartagena commune, when personnel from the Second Police Station of that town disrupted a clandestine slaughterhouse that operated in a takeover in the San Sebastián sector.

In the place there were more than 30 specimens of horses, pigs, cows and llamas in deplorable health conditions.

In the formalization hearing, Judge Felipe Contreras ordered the admission of the detainees to the San Antonio Penitentiary Compliance Center (CCP), considering their freedoms a danger to the security of society.

"According to the records that he manages and that are still under investigation by the Public Ministry of San Antonio, the defendants were found in a building where various animal species were found in a deplorable state of health. Also, in the same building, they They found parts of deceased animals and, likewise, tools from a slaughterhouse that, in this case, did not have the respective authorizations," said the magistrate.

 

 

He added that "a motor vehicle that had a charge for theft" was also found.

Prosecutor Francisco Martínez had requested preventive detention for both defendants "in view of the diversity of crimes for which the investigation has been formalized and also a possible flight risk."

From the defense of those arrested, the lawyer Hernán Solís asserted that his clients, at the moment of being surprised by the Carabineros, "were working, at that moment, making a construction wall", ruling out their participation in the crimes.

"The same neighbors, in different media, pointed out that the people who were in charge of the property and who transported the animals, who brought them in, who took them out, who fed them, were a married couple. In addition, they pointed out that this marriage constantly came and went, which is probably from Santiago".

"A neighbor who adjoins said that he knew them, that it is a couple and he does not know these people," the lawyer continued.

Finally, the judge set the investigation period for the case at 80 days.
