Environmental organizations, fishermen, inhabitants of the Atacama and Coquimbo regions and PS deputies ask President Boric to approve the Multiple-Use Marine Coastal Protected Area in the Humboldt Archipelago after the Council of Ministers for Sustainability postponed the vote due to lack of background of the project.

On Friday, July 7, the Council of Ministers for Sustainability had to vote on the project that seeks the creation of the Multiple Use Marine Coastal Protected Area in the Humboldt Archipelago, however, the vote did not take place because some of the ministers present They requested more information, so an extraordinary session will be called during this month to review the proposal.

Due to this, environmental organizations, fishermen and inhabitants of the Atacama and Coquimbo regions together with the socialist deputies, Daniella Cicardini (Atacama) and Daniel Manouchehri (Coquimbo), requested the Executive's approval of a Protected Marine Coastal Area of Multiple Uses in the Humboldt Archipelago.

In the letter, different groups highlight "the incomparable wealth of this territory."

“The benthic resource management areas managed by the different fishermen and shellfish guilds are the most productive in north-central Chile and contribute to 80% of the landing of locos and limpets in the entire Coquimbo region; There are more than 60,000 national and international tourists who come every year to watch whales, dolphins, and seabirds in one of the few places in Chile where they can be seen from the coast. we have producers of extra virgin olive oil thanks to the water provided by the Los Choros river aquifer and thus, many other sustainable activities,” says the letter they delivered this morning in La Moneda.

“We know very well that this is the last opportunity we have to protect our territory, and we have trusted the work of its Minister of the Environment to carry out this task, which has led the work with our community with great respect and rigor. However, in the Council session we saw how other ministries tried to impose their priorities without taking into account the work carried out both from the institutions, science, our own work and commitment to life for a harmonious, balanced development that respects the inhabitants. of the territory," the letter states.

Due to the above, the socialist deputy and representative of the Atacama region, Daniella Cicardini, addressed the "iron commitment of the government with the care of our environment with biodiversity and above all with a natural treasure that is the Humboldt Archipelago".

For this reason, it indicated that "what we ask of the Government in the entry of a letter that asks the President of the Republic to say loud and clear "No to Dominga", nor to any future project that threatens the power of money and corruption a unique ecosystem in the world”.

Regarding the vote that the Council of Ministers will carry out this month, Cicardini stressed that "we want to reiterate that the Council of Ministers can give a quick signal in this regard, I hope that by the end of the month as the commitment has been in the session of the On Friday, this new figure of protection and conservation of the Humboldt penguin reserve is voted on and that it does not continue shooting forward, because I believe that this generates greater concern, concern, ambiguity and a certain dilation that is not justified, because here are all the technical arguments”.

The legislator for Coquimbo, Daniel Manouchehri (PS), maintained that “today the Humboldt Archipelago is being threatened by corruption and death. The call that we make to the government is to keep its word and protect this space, we are confident that neither corruption nor the power of money will take precedence in influencing the government to make the decision that we all expect. that it is finally being able to protect a place that does not belong to us, that does not belong to the government, but that belongs to all future generations.”

Finally, the deputy and member of the Environment Commission, Daniel Melo (PS), expressed that “as a country, we face environmental challenges such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity, which threaten our quality of life. It is crucial to take action and support the creation and expansion of the multi-use Coastal Marine Protected Area, Humboldt Archipelago. These areas are vital to preserve biodiversity and ensure a sustainable future. I call on the government to support these actions and protect our marine and terrestrial ecosystems."
