Acne is a common condition characterised by painful or pus-filled red bumps that can appear on any part of the body and affect individuals of all ages. It typically arises from the obstruction of pores caused by a combination of sebum, dirt, and infection. One such type of acne is butt acne which, like other types, can develop due to various reasons. “Butt acne is for real but it is the kind of regular acne,” said Dr Geetika Mittal, a dermatologist, in an Instagram post.

“Blemishes on the buttocks can be due to various causes. Also, it is quite common and can appear at any age. While some of my patients complain of painful sporadic pimples, others have smaller red painless bumps,” she added.

Dr Geetika listed various reasons for butt acne, including folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), keratosis (skin growth), pilaris (a condition that leads to dry, rough patches and tiny bumps), carbuncle (red, swollen, painful and pus-filled boils), or infection.

Suggested identifying the reason and then treating them, the dermatologist listed certain things that you can do at home to start avoiding and treating them.

*Make sure you don’t wear tight clothes for your gym instead wear light breezy fabrics. After gymming, make sure you take a shower immediately.

*Use certain benzoyl peroxide-based washes because that will not only clean up the pores but also reduce the infection.

*Make sure you cut down all the sugars in your diet because sugars increase inflammation.

*If you have hair around there, laser hair reduction would be a good idea.

“But if the infection still does not subside, you would need antibiotics and for that, you must see your skin expert.

“There are exfoliating chemical peels and lasers which work on the pigmentation and also on the eruptions. They can be chosen post-examination,” concluded Dr Geetika.
