[sport] Minot tennis captures first team state title since 2018

GRAND FORKS – Minot last won the NDHSAA Class A State Tennis Team Tournament in 2018. Strong play at No. 3 singles by Sidney Ressler helped put the Majettes in the state finals where they took on a familiar WDA foe in Bismarck Legacy.

 

Earlier in the year, Minot defeated Legacy 6-3 in the regular season. Just last week, the Majettes outlasted the Sabers to win the WDA Region title, 4-1.

With a state title on the line, Legacy battled to a win at No. 1 singles as Aleah McPherson def. Halle Mattson, 6-3, 6-1. Minot answered right back though. Freshman Kyllie Fettig defeated Cambrya Kraft, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to tie things up.

In No. 1 doubles, Minot’s team of Sienna Ronning and Grace Olson continued their strong tournament play with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Anna Sorensen and Maria Barrett to give the Majettes a 2-1 lead.

Sidney Ressler opened up her No. 3 singles match against Kalle Severson with a 6-3 win in the first set. However, Severson had an answer, taking the second set 6-2. Ressler rose to the occasion in the third set though, winning it 6-3 to win the match and clinch Minot’s first team state championship since 2018 and seventh in school history.

 

Minot’s Lila Olson and Sabryn Ronning added some insurance at No. 2 doubles, defeating Chelsa Krom and Brooklyn Sand in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to give the Majettes a 4-1 victory.

Minot advanced to the state team finals with a 3-2 win over Fargo Davies in the quarterfinals and a 5-0 sweep of Grand Forks Central in the semis.

Doubles: 1. Sienna Ronning and Grace Olson (M) def. Sydney Lemieux and Jennifer Wang (GFC), 6-2, 6-1. 2. Lila Olson and Sabryn Ronning (M) def. Stella Blue and Alli Whelmi (GFC), 6-4, 6-4.

As Minot looks to build on their remarkable weekend in Grand Forks, the singles and doubles brackets will begin play at 10 a.m. this morning.
