#Steeven.™ Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 Two new human skeletons have been found in the ruins of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city south of Naples that was buried by the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD. The skeletal remains were recovered in recent excavations at Pompeii's House of Chaste Lovers and are believed to belong to two men aged at least 55. The director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, reported that both did not die from volcanic ash but from the collapse of buildings, noting that fragments of walls were found between their fractured bones. The quake is believed to have knocked down a wall in the room where they were seeking refuge. One of the skeletons had one arm raised, which "perhaps alludes to the tragic image of a futile attempt to protect itself from falling masonry," the Pompeii Archaeological Park added in a statement released on Tuesday. "They probably died due to multiple traumas caused by the collapse," the park said. The skeletons were found lying on their sides with their legs bent and one of them was wearing a ring on his left hand. Traces of what is believed to be a bundle of cloth were also found next to one of the victims, containing bead necklaces and coins. Inside the room were an amphora and a collection of bowls and jugs, while an adjacent room contained a homely shrine in the form of a fresco and a narrow bathroom with a toilet. A great tragedy Earthquakes before and during the eruption, as documented in the letters of the Roman author Pliny the Younger, had numerous fatalities. "Among the causes of death, the collapse of buildings, in some cases due to the earthquakes that accompanied the eruption, proved to be a lethal threat," the park said. "Modern excavation techniques help us better understand the hell that completely destroyed the city of Pompeii for two days and killed many inhabitants: children, women and men," Zuchtriegel said. The Italian Ministry of Culture estimates that "at least 15-20% of the po[CENSORED]tion" of Pompeii, then about 13,000 people, was buried under ash, pumice and dust. The Vesuvius eruption was equivalent to the explosion of numerous atomic bombs at once. Over the past two and a half centuries, archaeologists have recovered the remains of more than 1,300 victims. Intense archaeological activity The Pompeii site, which was not discovered until the 16th century, has seen a recent boom in archaeological activity aimed at halting years of decay and neglect, thanks largely to a €105 million (US) EU-funded project. $115.6 million) recently completed. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano stated that conservation efforts and archaeological research will continue. "The discovery of these two skeletons shows us that we still have to study a lot, do more excavations to get out everything that is still [hidden] in this immense treasure," he said.
