[Auto] Alpine A290 Beta: the future of the brand goes through this urban electric sports car

Alpine has a most interesting electrified future ahead of it. It is confirmed that from 2026 we will have to say goodbye to models such as the combustion A110, but work is already underway on an electric variant and on other copies that will not leave anyone indifferent. The Alpine A290 Beta has already been presented, which is the prototype that serves as a preview of this new era within the French sports firm.

It is an urban with a sporty cut that maintains the name with the A, followed by the 2 that refers to the B segment and from the 90s by a future lifestyle range. It also carries the letter beta (β) in its name to represent that it is under development. The production car will arrive next year 2024 based on the CMF-B EV platform of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. It will be a full-fledged utility vehicle, as it measures 4.05 meters long, 1.85 meters wide and 1.48 meters high.

Although the truth is that the Alpine A290 Beta wants to stand out by design, with a really worked aerodynamics and lines that evoke tradition and future in equal parts. For example, the lighting signature is inspired by that of the competition models of yesteryear, the 20-inch tricolor wheels are an advance to those that the production car will carry and its bumpers have very sculpted shapes. The bodywork is painted in powder white with a crystalline effect reminiscent of snowflakes. They contrast details in blue and black so that their inspiration in the mountains is clear.

The cockpit of the Alpine A290 Beta clearly shows that we are dealing with a prototype. The reason is that it has a driving position in a central position that will never reach production, but that attracts a lot of attention. It is inspired by the Alpenglow concept car and has a 1+2 configuration, with the three seats made up of bucket seats and competition safety harnesses signed by Sabelt. It is completed with a fully driver-focused arrow-shaped dashboard that is both minimalist and highly functional.

Although the key to this model seems to be its propulsion system consisting of two electric motors of which not too many details have been given. Ensuring that it has a Torque Vectoring technology, which allows controlling the torque transmitted to each wheel separately that will also be present in the production model. The multi-link rear suspension has a set-up between dynamism and comfort, while a high-performance Brembo braking system appears like that of the A110.

This prototype is fully configurable thanks to its 11 ABS positions and three specific driving modes for track conditions. It adapts with the Wet, Dry and Full; who change their behavior in an exemplary way. The truth is that we are already waiting for 2024 to arrive to be able to see the production version that will come out of this spectacular Alpine A290 Beta.
