Two people were arrested - in two different proceedings - by PDI officials.

The PDI reported this Monday that two people were detained at the Chacalluta Border Complex, in the Arica and Parinacota Region, for smuggling protected species.

As detailed by the Investigative Brigade for Crimes Against the Environment and Cultural Heritage (Bidema), these were two different procedures, for violation of animals protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites).

In the first event, after receiving an alert from Customs personnel, detectives verified that a subject of Peruvian nationality was trying to enter parts of a deer among his belongings, presumably acquired in the jungle of San Martín in Peru.

In the second, a Chilean woman tried to bring parts of an alligator-like lizard into her belongings.

"DO NOT BUY ANIMALS OR PARTS OF DOUBTABLE ORIGIN"

Both individuals were arrested for infringing article 11 of Law 20,962, which applies the Cites Convention: neither had permits or certifications that accredited the legitimate origin of the species, its provenance or method of obtaining.

"The recommendation is not to buy animals or parts of them when they have a dubious origin. You have to make sure that (the species) comes from an accredited reproduction center or that has a Cites certificate," said sub-prefect Rodrigo Ortiz, head of the Arica Bidema.

On the other hand, when the purchase is made in established places, it is necessary to "keep the documentation and certificates". Finally, if people become aware of the illegal sale of animals, they must report the fact to the Bidema or by calling the number 134, added Ortiz.

The seized products were delivered to the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and both defendants were warned, pending their summons to court.
