[New] San Sebastián City Council urges the Basque Government to control rental prices in the city

The motion, which includes the claim made by the platforms Alokairu-Benta Berri, Stop Desahucios de Donostialdea and Inquilinos Azora, has been supported by EH Bildu, Elkarrekin Donostia, PNV and PSE-EE, while the PP has voted against.

The Plenary of the San Sebastián City Council has approved, with the votes in favor of all the municipal groups except the PP, which has voted against, a motion by EH Bildu and Elkarrekin Donostia in which they urge the Basque Government to, prior request of the Consistory, "declare as stressed housing areas all those areas that meet the requirements established in this regard" in the new State Housing Law, as soon as it enters into force, with the aim of "establishing as soon as possible a system of rent price control in Donostia".

The motion, which includes the claim made by the platforms Alokairu-Benta Berri, Stop Desahucios de Donostialdea and Inquilinos Azora, has been supported by EH Bildu, Elkarrekin Donostia, PNV and PSE-EE, while the PP has voted against.

The mayor of EH Bildu Ricardo Burutarán has highlighted that "San Sebastián has 1,937 homes for rent", when the applicants for public housing for rent in Etxegintza are "more than 18,000". In addition, he pointed out that according to the Basque Government data corresponding to June last year there were 13,129 San Sebastian applicants for public rental housing at the Etxebide Basque Housing Service.

For all these reasons, in his opinion "more measures are necessary" to deal with the "housing problem" in the Gipuzkoan capital.

The spokesperson for Elkarrekin Donostia, Aitzole Araneta, has stressed that housing is "one of the most important problems" facing the capital of Gipuzkoa and this is evidenced by the fact that "more than 3,500 young people have had to leave the city for municipalities outskirts because they can't afford to live here.

For her part, the socialist spokesperson, Marisol Garmendia, congratulated herself on the future "comprehensive" Housing Law and recalled that the socialists carry public housing policies in their "DNA".
