[Mobile Games] It is a mobile game, but it is not at all what you expect: I have been able to see how Waven works and I think it will be one of the premieres of the year

Waven is the new thing from Ankama, a developer that is committed to a solid game away from traditional practices on iOS or Android.

Es un juego para móviles, pero no se parece en nada a lo que te esperas: He podido ver cómo funciona Waven y creo que será uno de los estrenos del año

Talking about mobile games usually leads us to a common space. One where, unfortunately, we envision a drop in quality standards and very unplayer-friendly monetization practices. The iOS and Android stores have sabotaged themselves, leaving little room for other offerings to shine. However, there are still promising games. Alternatives that impose the challenge of escaping the most common bad practices. One of these titles is Waven. Next release of Ankama that will reach both 'smartphones' and PCs throughout this same 2023.

A mobile game, but not as you imagine
Waven is a game that is more like what we would expect from Ankama than from other mobile titles. This developer has been active for two decades and has a unique artistic style. They were never afraid to innovate and even launched Dofus, a still active MMORPG that was released a few months before World of Warcraft and that came to have its own animated series. They also have a dozen titles released on smartphones, although with this Waven they are shamelessly looking for their third "big one".

The premise of the game is quite simple. The world has been flooded and the only surfaces we can access are small islands or rooftops that are still above sea level. Each territory has quite small dimensions and we will move through a simple map as an 'overworld' until we reach each one of the territories. Once there, you will have to explore the terrain, fight enemies or carry out certain simple missions. The idea is that it is a mechanism that is compatible with sessions of just five minutes, but that it does not wear out if our intention is to play for hours.

Where Waven wants to shine, however, is in its combat system. This is a card game that will allow us to build our own decks with unique synergies. There are a multitude of spells that can be combined with each other to generate secondary effects and increase their power, as well as a whole system of companions that can assist us during combat if we carry out certain specific plays. All of this, built on a cast of unique classes with different abilities and gear to pack the whole thing with even more strategic depth.
One of Waven's most interesting proposals is related to its game modes. It will offer a complete experience focused on combat against the environment. This is the big pillar we've talked about so far, with its story and constant progression system. However, we will also have the possibility to focus on PvP. The fight between players, each with their character and deck, promises to be one of the great attractions of the title. It's time to spend hours building as in a card game to use and then put ourselves to the test with this unique combat system that tests our decision-making.

The fights in Waven take place on a 49-square board through which we will have to move our character to attack or defend. The spells have their range of reach -sometimes infinite- and it is necessary to manage the risk reward. Perhaps this is the section where it gets the most out of its idea of also being available for mobile phones: iOS and Android games are capable of creating truly marvelous fighting systems with very few resources. In this case, the effort of a development that has taken more than four years is also noticeable.

The game looks interesting and the best thing is that there is no reason not to try it. Its final version will arrive throughout the year and the developers have promised that there will be "no monetization system that interferes with the gameplay." Absolute refusal to pay to win to focus on cosmetic elements or other additions. It will also feature cross-platform progression so you can play on Steam and continue your game if you open the title on iOS or Android. I don't know about you, but I wanted to see a nice-looking game that I could try without running into the usual annoyances of other free titles. I think the guy will hold up when the time comes to play it, but the most beautiful thing is that we don't lose anything by giving it a try.
